This special event was entitled "Preconceived Notions" because all of the wines and food pairings were a complete surprise--definitely an exciting concept for us adventurous diners! All of the food and wine pairings were SO unique & delicious--but what was most enjoyable & impressive was the wealth of knowledge that Jordan, the house sommelier, possesses. My husband and I have visited many wineries in California, as well as in Europe, and we've never encountered a sommelier who is as knowledgeable as Jordan--such a wealth of education he provides the guests! It's been a while since I was thus impressed with a restaurant. My spouse retired today so we celebrated with dinner at Mary's Vines in Rankin. The food is great, the wine is excellent, and the service is outstanding. We had the cheese tray and it was delicious. I highly recommend the scallops. They were perfectly cooked and the risotto was not the usual clump; it had a great texture and the flavor was sublime. My wife loved the clams and mussels. Our server Alexis is an excellent sommelier and helped us select a nice flight of sparkling wine and one of great reds. It's in a repurposed church and the decor is clean and modern and the seating is very comfortable. They have more than 500 wines available and can recommend perfect pairings. We visited The Study downstairs. It's a speakeasy and the decor is beautiful. There are sliding bookshelves that have different liquors behind them. The bartender was quite knowledgeable about the drinks and could make recommendations based on your preferences-gin, tequila, bourbon, etc. There is a large walk-in humidor with a big selection of cigars. read more

My husband and I visited Mary's Vine last night for the first time. We arrived about an hour earlier than our reservation time, Nikki greeted us and introduced us to Mila who escorted us to the speakeasy and cigar study. Mila was hugely knowledgeable of whiskey and made an excellent recommendation (Koval). We each enjoyed a cigar until our table was ready. When our table was ready, Mila offered us to clip and save our cigars to go or return at the conclusion of our meal. Our server was Laura who is fairly new but aside from telling us that, not at all noticed- she guided us through the menu which is an iPad. The wine list is brilliant and extensive (how does one choose?!). Enter Alexis (sommelier level 1!!!) who was a beautiful soul with an amazing presence and knowledge. She made a recommendation that truly met our requests and complimented our meal (Chateau Jouclary Cabardes red wine). I had the eggplant bolognese with burrata and my husband had the lamb with grits and Gorgonzola. Of note while Laura was our server and Alexis was our wine guide, we were taken care of by every staff person there (hi Sophia and Lauren!). I cannot talk enough about Mary's Vine in Rankin. My family made reservations weeks ago for today. My birthday is March 27 so this was a birthday celebration for me. I was SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED to arrive to the table to a birthday card....I may be turning 54 but the card on the "reserved" table made me giddy with 12 year old excitement!!! From our initial drinks to ending the meal was a perfect 10. We started the experience with drinks. I went with the Cape Codder, dad with a beer, mum with sparkling water and diet coke. Drinks a TEN. We next had Caesar salads (all the same) with olives and anchovies added. My 78 year old father literally said it was the best Caesar salad he's ever had. And the portion sizes....OMG!. Salads a TEN. We got the bread for the table. I'm not a bread eater and I couldn't stay away from it; the perfect combination of olive oil and pepper. Bread a TEN. I ordered a Rose' wine fight... to whomever from this page that recommended trying a flight, THANK YOU!! That was so fun!! Wine tasting a TEN. Then, like magic, we all ordered the same entree.... the STEAK DIANE. HOLY COW.... no pun intended.... It was fork tender, 2 filets served with vegetables and oven roasted potatoes. The "Diane Sauce" was magical. Entrees a TEN. Then came dessert. My dad's socks were blown off when he saw a pound cake served with pears. Pears are his favorite. Mum and dad both ordered that. I got the s'mores skillet that came with a birthday candle. Deserts a TEN. It's been a long time since I've been able to say that I had such an amazing experience in a restaurant. The ambiance was incredible. Our server was PHENOMENAL. The food was beyond words. I am SO FORTUNATE to be turning 54 (I am a cancer survivor) and still have both my parents to celebrate with.... and I'm so freaking ecstatic that we were able to share this amazing experience together. We ate here for our anniversary and the table was decorated with flower pedals, which was a nice touch. Our server and the staff were very kind as well. The restaurant was beautiful. My husband and I both ordered our steaks medium. Mine was great but my husband's was well done. Three separate workers came over to make comments about how his steak wasn't cooked properly and it wasn't acceptable. One of them asked my husband how they could make it right and my husband said that was up to them how they wanted to make it better. Also on a side note, my steak was GREAT but the fingerling potatoes and vegetables that accompanied the dish were not good. They were poorly seasoned and were not cooked all the way through. They did not get him a new steak. If I was in charge of a fine dining restaurant, at the very least, I would have insisted on replacing the steak. We had two wonderful desserts and my husband also ordered a cappuccino. After the restaurant staff members made a big deal about his steak not being cooked properly, we were shocked to find that nothing was done with our bill. For the $6 cappuccino not to be comped at least was a bit insulting. When you order a steak that is over $50, it should be cooked properly. We were very disappointed in our experience. :( read more

We had a good time at Mary's Vine, but our consensus was that we wouldn't go again. The reviews in general seem spectacular, so I was looking forward to it. I was glad they had free valet since there's not a lot of parking nearby although others in my group said they found easy street parking. We were told that they couldn't accommodate a larger group, so were disappointed to have a much larger table behind us empty for 2 hours. Perhaps they plan it with lots of time factored in. We did hang out for over 2 hours there and they were happy with us lingering. We didn't have to use QR codes for menus.... but they were all digital. They had tablets with menus, dressed up in the form of a real menu. We thought that was cute; however the digital app is weird with switching to portrait and landscape modes on its own. Some menu items I saw on the website disappeared on the day of our dinner. The brunch menu looked much more attractive, but we had a more limited dinner menu on offer. We ordered wine flights and were really happy with our wine flights. I ordered a cheese/nuts board, and others ordered the meat board, etc. Although we didn't think that the meals would be filling, my cheese and nut board was a lot of food. The staff was real nice and friendly in general. Very happy with the interaction.... except that we all felt that the bartender kept staring at our party. So overall, everything was fine and we thought the food was good, drinks were good, staff was good. The remodeled church was great in its decor. We just didn't think it merited the prices we paid (when comparing the dishes you get... like $45=50 for some cheese and nuts). With drinks and tip, expect roughly $100 per person. In my well-traveled and been-around-a-lot opinion, I think you could go to a restaurant of a nice hotel and have a really good time in a fancy restaurant and have great dishes/drink for much less money. While Mary's Vine was GOOD, I wouldn't say it was epic. We went knowing what it would cost, so ultimately we were fine. We just didn't think we'd repeat. Should you go to Mary's Vine? If you'd like to try out a nice place and a coupla hundred bucks doesn't make you think too much, why not!? Geta wine flight! It'll be a nice evening, and good thing to do once. But consider my hotel restaurant recommendation as a viable option too. read more

Had a cocktail in the cigar bar on Valentine's Day. As non-cigar smokers, we were thankful that we could hang our coats outside the library. The ambiance was amazing - great leather couches and the hidden entrance was also a nice touch. Our drinks were excellent - we got the Mary Shelley and the Bram Stoker. They were xpertly prepared. We have known about this place for a bit now and finally made reservations this evening for 6 pm. All Staff in all aspects is just amazing. I wish I remembered our waitress's name. She was just the best. She explained everything well and walked us through the process. The restaurant is an old church and just beautiful. So many details. You can walk up the stairs to the entrance but they also have a ramp if you needed it. On the stairs are beautifully preserved old corkscrews incased within the stairs. We ordered a bottle of wine after some sampling. Soon our food arrived. I got the burnt ends with cheesy risotto. The taste was very good but I would have preferred the temperature to be a bit warmer. My biggest disappointment of the whole night was the small portion size. I understand that with "fine dining" you will have that but after drop over $200 ...I should be full. After diner our waitress suggested we check out the cigar bar. Now I don't typically smoke cigars however after she explained the secret passageway... I did.. And I have to tell you that "the study" was my absolute favorite part and I beyond recommend it. Recently took my parents to Mary's Vine for Mom's Birthday. We loved it! Food and service were both excellent. The church was perfectly redone and is worth stopping in to see. The owners made it special by taking the time to talk with us and give a tour of the cigar bar and gaming lounge downstairs. It was a little pricey but I felt like it was worth it because it was a fun experience and more than just going out to eat. I had been eyeing this place on Yelp for some time, waiting for the right occasion to try. I decided to give it the ultimate test and try it first with a true California wine aficionado!!! This place truly pleases ALL the senses! It's a beautiful setting in a refurbished church in Rankin. Exquisite wood, windows, very comfortable chairs and a secret cigar cocktail bar downstairs (seriously, there's a secret panel !) I didn't know where to look next. The wine smells and tastes delicious and the staff are more than happy to discuss and teach. There is truly something for everyone-hundreds of types of wine! The food and charcuterie boards were incredible!!! Desserts are scrumptious and change often. The music was relaxing and set the mood beautifully. Free valet parking made everything perfect!!!! Quick takeaways: over $300 for 2 people, food lacked taste, but a very cool experience. We found Mary's Vine on a whim based off of Google recommendations and availability on OpenTable. I had booked a reservation for 08/18/2023 on OpenTable for their bar seating. Upon our arrival, we were promptly greeted by the valet who told us how to get into the restaurant. The hostess was very nice and walked us to our seat at the bar. We were there for about 2 hours and we had the bar seating to ourselves. The restaurant had patrons but there were empty seats. SERVICE - 5/5: Our server, Cheryl, was super attentive, polite, and held a great conversation. She wasn't overly nosey, and was super helpful with the iPad menu. She went over the history of the building when we had inquired and did a really great job of pacing our meal. She was very knowledge about the Church, menu, and especially the wines. Fantastic service. FOOD - overall 2/5 - severely lacked flavor: 1. Taste of Italy charcuterie - 3/5: the cheese and pesto were phenomenal. They gave a small loaf of bread that was sliced thin and bad balsamic which was great but I honestly wished they cut it all the way through instead of us having to rip it apart. The olives were delicious. As for the meats of the plate, I'm not sure why they didn't just do prosciutto or salami.. it was like mortadella or something that I feel like people would typically be put off by.. weird choice. This appetizer was great for 2 people. 2. Chilean Sea Bass - 2/5: I can say that this was probably one of the best cooked pieces of fish I've ever had. It had the right amount of sear and flaked off with a fork HOWEVER, the whole dish lacked flavor. The Sea Bass had 0 flavor, not even salt. The risotto just tasted bland and the veggies needed to be cooked about 3 minutes longer so they were tender. I had to cut the carrots with a butter knife they were that hard. I wanted to love this dish but it was bland. It also came out at luke-warm temperature which was disappointing. 3. NY Strip Steak - 2/5: again, severely lacking any sort of flavor. It was cooked to perfection (medium) but there was nothing in the sauce that made it stand out. They also may want to reconsider the plating - it came in a bowl which made it extremely difficult to cut according to my husband. 4. Chocolate Dessert - 2/5: no sweetness whatsoever. Very bland. MIXED DRINKS - overall 5/5: 1. Old Fashioned 2. Bourbon espresso martini - both were very flavorful and made perfectly. The espresso martini was chilled to a beautiful temperature. WINE - overall 5/5 for experience: 1. Grilling Season Wine Flight 2. Taste of France Wine Flight - both were great flights BUT the price points of the wine flights were enough to give you a heart attack. The minimum for a flight was $55 and ranged to over $150... im sorry but for the location of this restaurant and the pour, that's absurd (another big named restaurant does a wine flight for $65 for caymus wines). The price per bottle or glass was also extremely painful. I get they're trying to turn a profit but they won't get people in the door with those prices. Would we return? MAYBE. The food is seriously lacking in flavor and depth, the location is not in the best neighborhood, but the overall experience and customer service were wonderful. They put a lot of thought into this restaurant but the execution and prices need some refinement before we'd return. read more

What a wonderful place. I was at the soft opening of Mary's Vine and I have to say this will soon be one of the top 10 attractions in Pittsburgh. The staff was cheerful and professional. The owners were there, happy to see me and eager to make it a great experience. And it WAS a great experience. I expected there to be good wine, but not this much good wine. The wine list is extensive and the selection leaves every pallet satisfied. If you have a chance, talk to Jordan, the wine expert there. He knows his stuff and will take you on a wine journey you won't forget. I had a Martini, it was made at my table with flare. Again the customer service was amazing, I felt taken care of from beginning to end. Starting (and ending) with the free valet service. If it seems like I'm gushing I kind of am. It was such a unique experience, I had to write this review. The last thing I will point out is the food. Being a wine lounge you wouldn't think the food would be a priority. I had a pear salad and finished with the Pork sliders (I judge a place by their burgers). These sliders were incredible. If you go you must try them. I got my order of three sliders and after the first bite I nearly ordered three more. Would that make me a pig? Maybe I AM what I eat. To sum it up, these people get it. If you are looking for an adult-only environment for a special occasion, or just an evening out without your kids (or anyone else's kids for that matter) Mary's Vine is Best kept secret (but not for long) in the surrounding Pittsburgh area. Service is top-notch. I described and shared my wine likings with our server and she picked out a phenomenal bottle that paired with our meal perfectly. The food was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere...they made an old church warm and welcoming from the steps outside to the moment you walk in. There is no echo as they have decorated the room to be so warm, soft, and cozy. There was not a moment I was uncomfortable for the length of time we were there. If you like cigars, their downstairs library is for you. We went there for a Sunday brunch. I was surprised that the entrees were more of a dinner menu not for a brunch. I thought it would be more of eggs Benedict, more of breakfast foods. I got the ramen noodles that had pork belly in it. The pork belly was like shoe leather. It was tough and extremely salty! I've had pork belly before and it's normally like eating butter...very tender. The chicken and waffles had a small piece of chicken and two little squares of a waffle. The portions were small for what you're paying. The price of the cocktails were expensive. The wine selection was impressive. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the wines. We went downstairs to the cigar lounge. It was an awesome space. The atmosphere is nice with the tables not close together and the seating very comfortable. Where to start? We started coming in at the wrong entrance, realizing it was for handicapped folks, so we turned around and headed around the corner where the valets directed us up the stairs. Inside was absolutely lovely, and the hostess was laughing and told us that she saw us on camera heading in the wrong way but was going to help us anyway. We were early for our reservations, but she seated us without any issue. Our server was friendly and kind, and the atmosphere was so refreshingly different and unique. The wine selection was phenomenal, and the food was the best we've had in a long time. There was very little wait for anything, but nothing felt rushed. We gradually found our way down to the Cigar bar for some drinks and cigars, and enjoyed hours of each other's company playing chess. I have dined at Mary's Vine with my wife, my daughter and friends at least eight times if not more. Unfortunately, the experience has been "just right" one time. The service is excellent but the food is cold, the food is delicious and the service is terrible - or both the service and food are truly not up to par. I'm basing my rating as an average between 1 and 5. We dined this past Friday night - arriving on time for a 6:15 p.m. reservation. And we left at 9:30 p.m. asking for our entrees to go because we had still not received them. We started with a cocktail and the appetizers, French Onion Soup Toast and Crab and Corn Arancini. Once we received them, we ordered the Beet Wedge Salad, a wine flight for each of us and Eggplant Fusili as well as Colazioni. We also have a very favorite red wine and ordinarily order two bottles to take home. Our server forgot my salad and when I received it, it had barely any dressing on it. We simply sat and made conversation once our salads had been eaten. Then 2 glasses of one wine flight arrived (there seemed to be an issue about where to place the wine flights), then, after 10 minutes, two glasses of the other wine flight appeared. After another 15 minutes, one wine flight was completed with the other two glasses. Then, after 1/2 hour, we asked what had happened to the other glasses for the other wine flight and were told that that had been forgotten but would be coming soon. I asked about the purchase of two bottles of red wine - the server came back and said, "He said no". I don't have a clue who "he" was but there could have been a more gracious way to provide that information. So we sipped our wine flights and watched the clock make its way to 9:30 p.m. When we finally flagged down our server, we said that we wanted our entrees to go - we simply couldn't just wait any longer. The server said that she could uncork one bottle of our favorite red and we could take that home. I agreed - only to find out, when I arrived home, that it was not the requested red wine but another bottle that was over twice as much as the wine I requested. I don't mean to be crass but I spent $608.00 for beverages, food and a bottle of wine. And, adding insult to injury, we never ate my entrees because they didn't come. We've eaten at exceptional restaurants in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco and Pittsburgh's amazing Alla Famiglia. I'm not at all adverse, as a foody and restaurant fan, to spending money on outstanding experiences - as long as they are outstanding. I'm going to find it hard to return to Mary's Vine and that makes me very sad.... read more

After being away from the Pittsburgh area for a number of years we are now exploring and experiencing all of the great place's Pittsburgh has to offer and this is definitely one of the BEST places we've found so far. This was our first time at this restaurant. To go to the hostess stand, you go upstairs, then to go to the bar, you go downstairs. We had to wait so long for our cocktails that we had to cancel them. Our server was pleasant and attentive. However, she clearly didn't know the menu. I specifically asked if the vodka pasta was vegetarian. I was told yes, and ordered it. It came with bacon/ pork. My wife and I finally made it to Mary's Vine. We read the article in the Post-Gazette over the summer but haven't had a chance to visit. Our expectations were exceeded when we arrived! Parking: take advantage of the free valet service. Most of the parking near the church is taken up by the neighbors which makes sense. Atmosphere: Mary's Vine is simply beautiful when you step inside the door. The decor and paint gave me the feeling we were in Tuscany. The place had an immediate calming effect on me. The owners have done an incredible job restoring this beautiful house of worship. Service: Richard was our server. He was very welcoming and not over bearing. We were impressed by his knowledge of wine. Mary's Vine has a vast selection of wine which is easy to maneuver thru with the help of an IPAD. Richard helped narrow down the selections with his recommendations. Thank you Richard for being so kind and professional. Wine: we decided on 2 wine flights. The flights were 4 glasses (3oz pours) for each flight. We picked the South American and the United States flights. The wines were all delicious. Food: we were just looking for a snack so we decided on the cheese tray for 1 person. The 4-5 cheeses were scrumptious! They added a small container of honey which gave the cheese some pow! There were also olives, crackers and pickles. Enough for 2. Overall: Mary's Vine is a special place. The acoustics are perfect for conversation with friends, family, a date or special occasion.
