I can only say that they are okay. As much as I want to like this charming place, I have given them several chances, but they can't seem to redeem themselves. They lose my jacket; they somehow forget to do the alterations; they give me the wrong item; and they can never make the sleeves even. It's really tiresome. I took an evening gown to have it hemmed and I also needed the tailor to fix the zipper because I'm short waisted. Also needed a nip under the armpit to keep my bra from showing. Needed the alterations in one week. When I picked up my evening gown, it was more wrinkled than when I brought it in for alterations. I assumed they would steam my evening gown after the alterations were completed since they charged me $120. I had to take my evening gown to a cleaners to be steamed. The day of my friend's wedding, I discovered the gown had not been hemmed as short as I requested, but it was not apparent when I tried it on when I picked it up because it was wrinkled. I was very disappointed in the service. I expected quality service for $120. Service is definitely not what it used to be when it was still Mr. Ma's. I will not return. Unprofessional, poor workmanship, unreasonable prices, extremely long turn around. The took over a week to shorten a skirt - I asked them to take it 3" up, they took it up 1 inch.. I asked them to shorten a pair of jeans, they used some random color thread and didn't even finish the hem! Just awful. read more

Go here if you want to get rip off and get bad alterations. There is no standard for pricing. Bought the same kind of pants there to shorten in two weeks and they wanted to charge me $5 more. The when I got back my pants, it wasn't even sewn properly. Been going there for years but will have to quit this place. read more

I live nearby and figured I should give them a try. I bought a vintage tweed jacket online and thought it'd look better if I had it taken in a little. Middle-aged guy, not the old man who I've seen tailoring, checks it out and quotes me $120. I paid $80 for it so I was like hmm ... Do not trust this tailor!!! I had a horrible experience bringing my dress to have the slip hemmed (nothing to do with the front of the dress) and 3 large stripes, burns? were left on the dress. Took my jeans in the get hemmed. The man who worked there had broken English but recommended I get them tapered. Since he's the professional, I trust his suggestion. Pick them up and my calves are so restricted and uncomfortable. I ask him to fix them. He doesn't. 2 pairs of brand new jeans, absolutely destroyed. Threw away $400 dollars and they could care less. This shop has been around for over 20 years and I'm glad to see that it's still here. They do a great job at tailoring suits and dresses. So glad I found this place! I recently moved to Outer Richmond earlier this year and went to Helen's Alterations in the area for one of my altering needs! She did an OK job but since it was right before Halloween weekend when I came in she was frantic and said it would take longer than usual. I was fine with that. Fast forward a few months - I was in a bind for shortening a skirt for my engagement photo shoot and I needed the dress back in 5 days. She completely freaked out and said that was impossible since she has sooo many weddings, bridesmaid dresses, etc. I took my skirt and was about to leave when she said, " OK I'll do it for you but for $70." She was saying the skirt material was difficult and she would have to stay late this week blah blah. I told her no thanks and left. All I had to do was travel a little further to find Ma's Alterations! He promised me it would be ready by my Friday deadline and he took a lot of time to measure and make sure he was being precise, as well as checking for my approval during the process. The dress came back PERFECTLY HEMMED - straight, exact length I wanted, and with no evidence of having been altered. The best parts were his considerably cheaper price than Helen's AND it was done a day EARLIER! What I was being told needed at least a week at the other place literally took him 3 days. I brought in a silk dress that needed to be altered asap - brought it in thursday evening and got it back by saturday morning, definitely very accomodating! (See picture) My dress was a bit loose around the neckline (about 1/2" taken off on both sides from the top layer and lining) and needed to be taken in a bit around the sleeves and waist line. The tailor listened, understood, and did a great job with my dress. The fit is so much snugger and exactly what I had wanted. $65 for the job - well worth it considering the difficulty and time. read more

Mr Ma and his tailors are great with the details but it can get pretty pricey depending on how many clothing you're getting altered.

Staff is so friendly, skillful, and rates were affordable especially for somewhere in the city.

A good tailor is hard to find, and so you will have to keep looking, because these guys are a joke! They destroyed three silk shirts that I took in since they were too big. These weren't cheap to buy, and so I was willing to pay some extra cash to get them just right. Too bad I chose these clowns! The shirts went from being a little too big to being way, way too small. They took my measurements and all seemed well but the final outcome were shirts that were about five inches short on my wrists and so tight in the chest that it didn't even keep a straight line, but bulged outward in between the buttons. Unwearable. A total loss. Clearly they screwed up in taking down the numbers, or they are just incompetent. Initially they offered a partial refund but then later refused even that, being quite rude in person at the store. The owner accused me of taking the shirts to another tailor secretly, apparently make them even smaller? Why the heck would I do that? Basically the owner was just making things up at that point to cover his own mistake. Not a professional tailor. Not a professional shop. Not honest. Sure, maybe they can hem some pants, but any dry cleaner that does alternations can do that. If you want a real tailor, please please avoid this shop lest they destory your clothes too! read more

This place is cheap, but you get what you pay for. I don't get why there are so many positive reviews as they hemmed all my jeans too long and I had to take them back in to be taken up some more. Plus, they did a TERRIBLE job with the original hems. I now need to take them somewhere else to try to have someone fix their crappy work. I would look elsewhere. read more

So this was a while ago but I brought another pair of pants to Ma's to take in the waistband and they literally just sewed up the back seam right through the waistband. Who does that? I believe they charged me $25 for this "favor". I was raised by a professional tailor. I know that you remove the waistband, take in the seam or seams as need be, possibly sew a dart, you shorten the waistband and re-attach it. You might move a button. You do not ever just sew through a waistband. I was so annoyed and I had these 2 guys smiling and nodding their heads up and down and "not comprehending" my complaint because they apparently did not speak English. The seams of a couple of work shirts I have came apart, and so I was looking for a tailor to repair them. I chose Ma's based on the reviews I read, and I was very pleased with my experience with them. I was greeted by a very friendly man who asked detailed questions on the work I was looking to have done--reassuring me that he wanted to be sure to fix the shirts according to my instructions. The price he quoted me for the job was quite reasonable, and he asked me when I wanted to pick the shirts up. I said that after the weekend would be fine, but he sent me a text message the very next day in the morning to let me know that my shirts were already finished. I was surprised but grateful, and it was really helpful to get the text message. When I picked up my shirts, I was amazed at how perfectly they had been repaired. I rarely have the need of a tailor, but I most certainly will return to Ma's if/when I do! I have found the perfect tailor and I will stick with them! read more

Took a couple pairs of jeans in for hemming - only $8 per pair! I can't believe I've gone this long without hemming my jeans and letting them drag on the ground or cuff them up. Damn I hate being so short. The two guys in there were terribly friendly, even the customer being served was friendly :) You walk right into the middle of their workroom filled with clothes, kinda crazy little place but I liked it. I'll have my jeans back in 3 days - based on the reviews I have a good feeling they'll be nicely hemmed up. Update 08/01/07: Got the jeans back last night and they were very nicely hemmed. I've never had anything hemmed before (CUFFS!) so I can't compare. But everything was straight, the thread matched the jeans, and finally I have jeans that don't drag on the ground behind me. read more

The bridal shop it came through couldn't guarantee free or discounted alterations for the mistake (and was two hours away), so I decided to just take it to Ma's. Ma's has been doing my dress shirt alterations for years because nothing I buy off the rack fits perfectly. I have had him shorten sleeves, take in sides, and add back darts. The quality is excellent and priced fairly. About a year ago, after getting sick of nothing fitting well off the rack and spending too much on alterations, I had him custom make a few dress shirts. I got to pick out my own fabrics, the shirts fit perfectly, and the quality was as good as his alterations. It will probably be useful to know that he only accepts cash and usually asks for a deposit. His English isn't great, but good enough to have a basic conversation. Turn around time usually ranges between 1-2 weeks depending on how much other work he has, which is totally reasonable. read more

I have boobs. They aren't small. I love my boobs, yet at times, curse them and try to shove them into small areas, push them around, or even attempt to flatten them. It is a sordid relationship. My boobs especially hate button down shirts. They pop the buttons, or try to escape between them. They will never allow the shirt to completely close. I have tried safety pins, tape, hot glue, a welding gun, leeches, velcro strips, heavy duty staples, but nothing works. My boobs just say, "Nope, screw you! We are a great rack. We do what we want." This was before Mas Tailoring. A trial button down was brought to this sweet man, who simply gave a knowing nod when I explained what i wanted. "Please sew this shirt closed, starting from the second button all the way down." It was like...he KNEW. I ended up bringing him every button down shirt in my closet. They are a little hard to get over my fat head, but my boobs are now well contained. This guy is precise, efficient, and affordable. He also never stares at my boobs. And my boobs appreciate that. read more
