Ma was great! I brought a J.Crew blazer here that a friend had given me. I didn't want to spend a lot to make it fit better and Ma was happy to help. Although I will say that Ma is a perfectionist and told me very frankly how the blazer would never fit perfectly without a total restructuring. I understood and just had it taken in a little, as I didn't want to spend more on a free blazer than a new one. Overall, Ma knows how to make something fit right and all the work was exceptional. Be warned though, cash only and Ma asked for a deposit. I am sure this was still cheaper than other tailors in the city! read more

If I need something altered that is beyond a simple hem, I go here. The overhead is clearly low, low budget, but the quality of the work is truly high quality and outstanding. I often have to have coat or suit sleeves taken up, and they often have detailing at the cuff, so you can't just shorten it at the hem. You have to take up the sleeve at the shoulder. Not many tailors do this, or even want to bother. But Ma's, yup, they always do it right. They do not cut corners. I also had them take an entire silk dress down two sizes, and that they did! It looks great! They also have a good idea of where a hem or cut of a jacket should lie, and they take the time to make the appropriate measurements. There were times when they had a better idea of pant or sleeve length than I did (eg. coat sleeve should expose just the right amount of the shirt sleeve underneath). The staff are Chinese, and don't speak the best English, but can make themselves understood. They are not cheap, and they take time to do the job right--I have never asked for a rush order, so I don't know what their work would look like if that had to do it quickly, but they are professionals, and I doubt they would promise anything they could not follow through with. I say this from the perspective of being the granddaughter of two professional seamstresses from Japan. Ma's knows their trade! Down sides include occasional waits, but they've always had my orders ready on time. read more

I'm not tiny short, but every time I splurge and buy something designer, I can usually wing it without alterations, but dresses usually look better a few inches shorter. I've always heard good things about Ma's and Irene C's review sold me so I went and took this new dress there. I knew exactly what I wanted, 3 inches off. I was pondering taking it in on the sides at the hips too, but based on my hesitation, the folks at Ma's talked me out of it. They are also pretty good about pining and marking things as you try it on so you are certain that what you think you want in your head looks right on you. It's also nice to have a sweet Chinese old man remind you that you just have to be careful sitting down when wearing a dress that's mid-thigh. They asked me when I wanted it done, and it was done exactly then. Everything was perfect. My dress came with a nicely done blind hem, and that's exactly what they did. The thread was a perfect match, original hem tape was still used, the lining was also shortened, and they even added back the chainstitches that held the shell to the lining at the hem. I once took a maxi dress to this location and I couldn't believe how they managed to mess up the hem so bad that the back hem of the dress ended up at my calves while the front hit the floor the way it was supposed to. It was beyond fixing since it couldn't be a maxi dress anymore so I didn't take it back. Thank god it was a cheap dress... I ended up never wearing it and threw it away. Also, they don't have a set price for their work. I guess they didn't think I could speak/understand Chinese because they were arguing about what to charge me at first. $10 was the final price... but what a waste of a dress! read more

Ma's is great if you need something as simple as pants/jeans hemmed. For anything else, find a different tailor. They mucked up a blouse of mine last week. Now I have to spend more money elsewhere to undo what they did and have the shirt altered properly. read more

This place was on the verge of becoming my life-long tailor UNTIL - Mr Ma himself decided to charge me to remedy the mistakes they made. I like my jackets to show about 1/2" of cuff, but when I received them, they ended up longer than my dress shirt sleeves (which I wore at the pinning). I brought them back, and Mr. Ma seemed to be annoyed that he would have to fix the length. He even warned me to "not say they are too short" when he's done fixing them. I believe that Mr. Ma is not used to tailoring jacket sleeves to be slightly shorter than the shirts worn underneath. I even brought a picture of a what I wanted, and Mr. Ma couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the style. Correcting the length cost me $30 (total) for the 3 jackets they should have tailored correctly the first time. In any case, I didn't understand why I was being charged to fix their mistakes, especially after dropping a cold $144 (the 3 jackets, plus 2 other items that were fine). I'm still deciding weather or not I will make use of Ma's services in the future. The main thing to remember if you will be visiting Ma's anytime soon is that, you better know what you want and insist on it. Be forewarned, Ma's definition of style is different and possibly of another time. read more

like Matt in SF, I bought several pairs of jeans from The Warehouse Sale and needed a place to get them hemmed. Ma's is well worth the trek out to the Richmond - cheap and timely, and he does a great job to boot. $8 for regular hem, $18 for original hem. One of my original hems wasn't perfect but it was more the design of the hem (had prefabricated holes just above the original hem which made things difficult) than anything else. Their Chinglish wasn't too bad, and their customer service is great - Mr. Ma always hands me my receipt and change with two hands - a great sign of respect that even a twinkie like me could appreciate... read more

I am new to the area, and I had some new work pants that I needed hemmed. I walked down to Ma's where they invited me and my pants in. I told him that I needed my pants hemmed 2 inches. He measured it out with me and showed me what they would look like. Told me to come back on Monday (which would be 4 days), and gave me a receipt. I have never gotten anything hemmed, so I don't know how much is resonable, but I thought $12 was a good price. My pants look great. Just the perfect length, and I still can't understand how he hemmed them, I can't even tell that he did! I am very pleased with the work of Mister Ma! :-) read more

The guys at Ma's are Hong Kong tailors, so they know what's up. They are fast, friendly, and very reasonably priced. Original hems for pants are $10! I also got a Vera Wang bridesmaid dress hemmed for a mere $17 and it was done perfectly! read more

The guy that works here is not professional. His work is shoddy and low quality. He is also rude and charges obnoxious prices for some items - including $10 just to take your measurements (even though you are bringing him lots of repeat business). So, like a smart SF resident, I went to yelp and found the reviews about Mr Ma's Tailoring to be quite helpful. Not a bad find... thanks to those on yelp that provided their input here, which led me here too! Mr Ma's tailoring was pretty good, reasonably priced, good quality (original hem) and good service. Location is a breeze for parking (tons of meters right in front), and everything was ready when promised. Bonus: tons of places to get lunch in that area! After trying to shop around for skirts to wear to work I grew tired of not finding any that either fit, too short, too long, or just plain ugly. A plus size girl like me can get pretty frustrated. My answer, buy some material from a local fabric shop and have Ma's Tailoring sew it the way I want it. This place is adorable. You walk in and it's just sewing tables and 3 guys working. I almost didn't know if i should walk in or not! I had a dress hemmed up here, i am short and it still touched the floor even with my high heels on..... SO they have dressing rooms in back and he pinned it in a second and i was on my way. I got to pick it up the next day and they had done a perfect job!! It was $22 just to bring up the hem a few inches, but at least if was a job well done. Heads up, it is cash only. Reasonable tailoring can be hard to come by in SF, but have no fear, Ma's Tailoring is a deal and a steal IF you don't mind a) paying in cash and b) sometimes not understanding what the tailors are saying. That being said, I have never NOT been pleased with their work product and their prices. Pants for $10, a ball gown being hemmed for only $25, seriously not bad. Well-tailored clothing items never go out of style, so don't be shy about taking that old dress of your grandma's in to be revamped for your body! read more

as you walk up, you'll notice the top half of the front door is open, and the bottom is closed. on my first visit, i paused, wondering if i should knock or something before barging directly into their tiny work space. ma, the man, the legend, works with one other tailor. they're both perched on stools, and work attentively. be clear about what you want, and carry some cash to pay in advance. most often, they'll have your items expertly tailored within a few days, and if they're swamped, less than a week. no frills, no screen door to keep flies out in the summer, no pretty art work. they know what they're doing, and keep cost low. i've brought in jeans, shirts and even a mink coat. who else are you going to trust with a mink coat? ma, that's who. now you know. read more

So ... I can be a bit impulsive when buying clothes. If the jacket is a size too big, but I like the jacket, I have been known to buy it anyway. When I brought a lambs leather western jacket into Ma's Tailoring that was a size too big, I wasn't sure if they could help me out. The first round of alterations went well ... but the jacket was still too big. Without charging me a dime, they did a second round of alterations and the jacket came out perfect! freaking amazing beyond belief..... but not if your an in the closet racist. You know you are an in the closet racist when.....your in a room with people speaking a different language, maybe laughing, and you immediately assume that they are laughing and talking ill about you....or.......you need perfect english speaking skills to feel secure about another type of skill, say, tailoring. I am only bringing this up because many of the reviews below are bullshit. Ma and the other man working here are the sweetest most amazing tailors ever. You walk in with your garments, but them on in the fitting room, and allow Ma to make the necessary adjustments and notations. Then you remove the piece, hand it over, and voila....ten days = magic. I took in a $150 pair of jeans that was brand new and a pair of reaaally old true religion pants that basically....well...the seam going up and down the butt was completely falling apart, the pockets were coming off, they were too long and I had spent years waking on the long ends of my pants in the rain ect ect. On the jeans i needed them hemmed for they were waaay too long. For the True Religions I basically wanted the butt seam fixed and basically have the pants in wearable conditions. When I explained to Ma what I wanted he spent a long time talking it over with his other coworker....in another language. And yes at times it seemed from my little white person perspective that they were laughing, but I never felt like they were laughing at me...probably it was more like "oh man what are we gonna do about this" sort of thing... Anyway, the conclusions: The jeans are the perfect length, and as other people have mentioned he does that thing where the back is a bit longer so you can wear your jeans with flats or heals. The true religion pants are like....so good it is beyond any of my expectations. Originally he was just going to bring in the seam from the middle but he actually patched up the entire seam, as well as all the pockets and other holes. I also got them hemmed and they look brand new! My roommate also brought in a pair of jeans which had the same butt seam problem. Hers were also fixed very well. We paid $61 for three pairs of pants, which I think is WELL worth it. read more

This little shop is clean and bright like a little Couture house right on Clement. The man who helped me assess the sleeve length of my blazer was thoughtful about things like what would happen to the button with the new length and the place had a very friendly vibe. $24 lengthened the sleeves of my eBay blazer purchase as much as the fabric would allow and didn't compromise the integrity if the jacket. Parking is very easy to come by on this block so you'll be in and out fast. read more

I just got back from this place, and I am red-faced furious: This will take some explaining- This was my fourth time back. I had them do the sleeves on a coat, and take in 5 pairs of pants. They charged me a very reasonable price for all of them, and were very friendly. I was sold, I have a tendency to be loyal, they were my neighborhood tailor. So I bring in 3 more pairs of pants today, and they ask "So, how much did we charge you before?" I say "18 bucks". Then they denied that they charged me that before. Not only that, they start speaking Chinese to each other to start laughing at me. They didn't name a different price, they started laughing at me. The funny thing is, they did the exact same thing to the guy who was being served before me. He was able to get thru the language barrier better than me, or perhaps was more eager to be argumentative than me. I really can't believe it, I don't understand why a place would be that way to a repeat customer. If you enjoy a little derision and scorn with your shopping, help yourself. read more

can do a regular hem just fine, but this place can't do a proper original hem. The hem on my jean was sewed on backwards and their technique would leave the jean looking awkward with or without the screw up. read more

I take everything there, and they do an amazing job, for cheap. I recently took a pair of pants that were 3 sizes too big in the waist in, and now they fit like a glove. I tried to find the seam where they took them in, but it is nowhere to be found... amazing! I took a brand new cashmere pull over shall that I wanted cut and hemmed into a wrap because I didn't like the original style. I had tried other places and they said it was too difficult and risky and that it couldn't be done. All of the men at Ma's were very friendly and professional. After reading all the reviews I gave this place a try. They do great work here for really great prices, especially since they are tailors. He is the first to get the length on my slacks perfectly without having to ask me to approve the length as all the other places I've gone to require. Isn't that why you pay them to do this??? I've been searching for a tailor for sometime now. After reading such great reviews about Ma's Tailoring I had to give them a try. I took a pair of slacks that has been kinda tight for some time now and wanted him to relax the waist an inch from a 34in. to 35in. I was told It won't be a problem and it can be picked up in a week. That was fine with me since I wasn't in a rush. I pick up my pants today and looked breifly at it and tried it on. It fits I said and that's all I knew about tailoring. I can home and tried on my pants again to look and show off my pants to my mom(she used to sew) and first thing she said was "look at that fish eye"(*of course in cantonese) I was like..what are you talking about? I looked in the mirror and you can see a slight buldge where they opened the seam and resew it. My mom said they could have done a better job. I was bummed. $15 bucks to resize. but now it have a fish eye. :( hopefully no one notices it. I recommend C&W Tailor & Dress Maker. yelped. read more
