This place has a strange set up as far as the decor inside. It's nice but odd. They do keep the place pretty clean. The floors were immaculate. Our server was energetic for sure. He was quick to offer food choices since we had come during brunch as they had a limited menu. We decided on the mash up (?) and the French toast. Both were pretty good. The French toast took the number one spot. Definitely have to go back during an hour when they have the full menu going on. So much more I saw that I wanted to try. I'm not really the select menu type of girl so that was just weird to me. But not the reason for the loss of one star. It is what it is. -1* because when we walked in the host(s) were super inattentive. We had obviously never visited before and kind felt like we had no idea what to do. My husband and I were near The RIM when we needed to eat lunch and it was already 1 p.m. We searched for a nearby eatery on Yelp and found Mash'D. Being new to a plant-based diet, finding options have become a little more challenging but Mash'D had it all. There were so many options since they offered all their salads as vegetable-based and choice of proteins as an add-on. What a great idea! BUT, we found several other options that caught our attention. My husband and I started off with the "Crushed Devil", crushed fresh hard boiled eggs with creamy Italian dressing, yellow onions, cucumber, tomatoes, cilantro, pink lemon salt, pickled peppers all on top of their scratch made grilled bread. OMG, this was so tasty that I completely forgot to take a photo until there was only one bite left. This is definitely a must try item. So delicious!!! We also ordered the "Avocado Toast Pizza". OMG, we hit the Jackpot!! Made with their very own in-house multi-staged dough, Wisconsin brick cheese, avocado slices, thinly sliced fresh jalapeño peppers, sprouted pumpkin seeds, garlic and cilantro. This was absolutely INCREDIBLE!! The crust was thick, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside. Just the right amount of cheese. The avocado was perfectly ripe without being overly soft and not a hint of brown. The taste was so YUMMY! Luckily I remembered to take a photo before eating it all. Unfortunately, the Cabernet Sauvignon that I tried was a bit too light bodied for my liking. The one that is described as full-bodied was $18 per glass. Maybe I'll try it during Happy Hours 3-6 p.m. when drinks are half-priced. There was mention that "restrictions applied". Mash'D is a great little restaurant/bar in the heart of The Rim with a theme celebrating Moonshine! When I have visitors in from out of town, this is one of the places I like to take them for an upscale atmosphere and interesting food and beverage options. I've always had great service and the food has always been delicious. On my most recent visit, my husband and I brought a good friend from D.C. for dinner and she loved it. I had the Hurricane Manatee which I proceeded to suck down pretty quickly. I have become a fan of moonshine! On previous visits during brunch, I have enjoyed the mimosas. Try one. You won't be sorry. For this particular visit, we started with queso and chips. Lord, we could have all licked that bowl clean. For our meals my friend had the Avocado Toast Pizza, my husband had the Bulgogi Tacos, and I had the Fried Chicken with a side of Chuck Norris gravy. The chicken dinner doesn't normally come with the gravy, but ask for it. None of us were disappointed. The food is flavorful and satisfying. In past visits, I have gone during brunch and had the Chicken and Biscuits, as well as the Mash'd Tater Eggsplosion. I have yet to have anything bad or even so-so. Service on this visit and all of my past visits was excellent. Our server was attentive, helpful, and very pleasant. The atmosphere is similar to a sports bar, but not quite so loud, so you can easily hear everyone at your table without having to yell. The only downside is the seating. You either sit at a booth or hightop tables. I'm short, making those hightop tables uncomfortable and difficult to get into the bar stool style seating. I'm not fond of booths because I don't like having to crawl in and out. I do prefer the booths over the hightops, though. On this visit, all of the booths were taken but as soon as we started to sit at a hightop, a booth opened up and the hostess was kind enough to grab us quickly and let us know she could re-seat us in a booth before we got settled. Every item we've tried on their menu is absolutely delicious. I especially love anything that uses their fried chicken, it is the juiciest most flavorful every time. My daughter surprised me with a brunch date for Father's Day. I had never been here and was pleasantly surprised. The place has a very cool vibe and western decor. When it comes to food preferences, my husband's and mine are simple: We look for decently priced fare offering amazing flavors, without all the pomp and circumstance of a high end restaurant. Sure, a gourmet meal in a fine dining establishment is great to experience on occasion, but for every day dining, it's just not practical (at least it's not on OUR budget). Mash'D fit that bill and had decent reviews, so we decided to check them out. Here's our take: There were a few folks waiting to be seated when we arrived, so I put our name on the wait list. We were told the wait would be 20 minutes, but were seated within 5, even though we arrived at noon on a weekend during brunch...sweet! We were shown to a two seater high top and given our menus. Within seconds, our waiter appeared and took our drink orders (tea and lemonade), and then we settled in to review the menu. When he returned with our drinks, we told him it was our first time there, and he gladly recommended several dishes. We chose two of his recommendations ("Chicken and Biscuits," and "The Unholy") and sat back to wait for our food. Unfortunately, the place was EXTREMELY noisy (very loud music combined with very loud chatter), so it was difficult to have a pleasant conversation. The atmosphere was conducive to game watching, because there were several big screen TV's strategically located around the area, and the bar was in close proximity to the tables. It appeared most of the diners had chosen libations with their meals, and based on their very loud conversations, they had a nice buzz going! LOL! But, that's what weekends are for...to let loose and relax a bit, right? Either that, or the music was way too loud! Our waiter returned in record time with our meals. They looked and smelled amazing, and since it was past noon and neither of us had eaten yet, we dove in. My "unholy" was served on four thickly sliced baguette slices that were cut on the bias, dipped in custard, and fried until lightly browned. The bread was not allowed to soak in the custard very long, so it was quite dry. It was not unpleasant, but not the consistency I've come to expect with an item labeled as "French Toast." The chicken had a tasty crust, but had been fried a bit too long, leaving some of the meat tough and stringy. Fortunately, the spicy jalapeño maple syrup helped moisten the dryness of the bite. The best part of the dish were the perfectly fried potatoes topped with a tomato-y, garlicky sauce. My husband's chicken and biscuits also suffered from over-fried meat, but the biscuits were tender and flavorful. The whole shebang was topped with a gravy that was fairly flavorless. My husband helped his lifeless meal along by dipping his chicken in my yummy jalapeño syrup and sharing my perfectly fried potatoes. Based on the reviews of this place, we really expected better quality of food than what we were served. I guess if you partake in the various drink concoctions they offer, anything they serve will taste like a gourmet meal, as long as it's served in an attractive manner. We're up in the air if this place warrants a second try, but probably not since there are many other interesting places in the area. But everyone's taste is different, so you really should make up your own mind. I'll give kudos to our waiter, tho...he really rocked it! read more

Is it possible that food can be good but still "off" at the same time? Yes! The Rim shopping area off of I-10 is a massive shopping eating district with too many stores and restaurants to count. An eclectic place with a clever interesting menu in a sports bar type setting is the Mash'd. Our party ordered 4 dinner items so I got to sample a bit of each. A bbq boneless rib sandwich was tasty (better than simply pulled pork) but smallish and the sauce made the bun soggy. The Rebellious burger had two patties (cooked medium though ordered medium well) with bacon and egg on top. Too bad the fries that came with were too salty. The shrimp and crab "volcano" topped a lemon rice pilaf with real shrimp and snow crab pieces. The seafood sauce was strangely overly sweet. Lastly, we had a meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Great flavors but smallish portions made even smaller looking by being plated on a large dish. Average entree price is in upper teens so the smaller portions made Mash'd a marginal value. I loved the flavors and the concept of food mash-up. But the small miscues on flavor and portion size made this place a near miss. read more

We went on Saturday night and there was no line for a table for 4 which was good. This restaurant is actually not as large as it looks. There were couple large screen TVs throughout the restaurant. The restaurant is sort of loud but we had no problem having a conversation. We ordered the rebellious burger, cajun rib sandwich, meatloaf and crab and rice volcano. The rebellious burger has 2 slices of thick bacon and egg. It was not bad but it was not too special in flavor. It came with fries that were seasoned, very good. The cajun rib sandwich was pretty good but I definitely won't call it spicy. There were few fatty pieces so someone people may like that. The meatloaf was good but the size was pretty small. The crab and rice volcano was weird that it was sweet. It came with some crunchy tortilla chips. I suppose you could turn the dish into a dip. read more

Service was perfect. I'm glad I was able to have a better experience than my first visit.**** I have mixed feelings for this place. To start two of our water glasses still had lip prints on them. The waiter was nice about it though and quickly brought replacements. The blue moon moonshine drink is delicious. The spinach and corn dip is okay and comes in its own hot iron skillet. The rebellion burger was really, really good but the fries were a little too salty and I'm not a fan of the ketchup. Do you like corn? Maybe I should rephrase the question to "Do you have an insensitive palette and a digestive system made of steel?" If so, then this is the perfect place to endure the plethora of flavors infused in a micro menu of traditional American dishes. It's been several hours since I dined at this establishment, and I'm still trying to process the culinary disaster I experienced in this place. The Mash'D Meatloaf did not taste like meatloaf at all. The chef went beyond the outer limits of the norm by adding corn and some other ingredients to create a super sweet and tangy flavor that overpowered the meat, making it seem as if you were consuming a lumpy meat sauce. The more I ate, the less I wanted it--if that makes sense. The Spinach and Corn Dip had creamed corn, and the top was way overcooked, leaving a burnt, lackluster presentation. Trying to defy defeat, I decided to try the Bulgogi Tacos and Chicken Fried Pepperoni. The corn tortillas appeared to be store bought and weren't even heated, making them fall apart upon grabbing them. The Akashi steak reminded me of a Cracker Jack box; where you had to consume the entire box before finding the lame prize at the bottom of the box. Once I found the steak, I no longer wanted it. It was buried under mountains of bibb lettuce and large carrot slices. Being that Bulgogi sauce is already acidic, the cilantro lemon rice didn't compliment the tacos, but rather contributed to the overpowering citrusy acidity of the entire dish. The same can be said for the Chicken Fried Pepperoni. Pepperoni already has a spicy kick to it, and the hot honey dip didn't make it taste any better. I'm not sure if this place considered culinary synergy before designing its menu. None of what I tried to consume had smooth transitions or complimented each other; hence the restaurant name: Mash'D. It's as if they blindly picked dishes from a hat and paired them. One thing I can say is that Mash'D is great at mashing together a myriad of ingredients--regardless if they go together or not. Since it has a bar, and you can consume alcohol, you may want to get a little intoxicated before trying the food. Maybe the alcohol can dampen or dull your sense of taste enough to be able to consume the food without incident... If unable to consume alcohol, and if your stomach can handle it, and you have an open mind and an insensitive palette, this is the place for you. Just make sure that you live nearby, because the food might invoke a bowel movement upon leaving the establishment. Oh, and I hope you like corn... read more

Popped in on a Saturday night with no reservation and was seated immediately by our awesome hostess, despite how busy it was. Usually, when the dining area is packed, but tables appear ready, restaurants still put you on a 15-20min wait to allow the kitchen time to catch up with the volume of orders coming in. Nope, Mash'D sat us right away with a yellow notecard on the table. Alan (manager) popped over within minutes and got us started, and took our appetizers order, and allowed me to make up my own concoction (House Lemonade mixed with Ginger Beer); it was amazing! August (waitress) popped on over shortly after Alan left and was just as personable and kind! We exchanged our love for spices and fruit mixes and left one another with a drink or two to try at home! We had the Fried Pepperoni and the Flower Power cauliflower. Both were awesome, but we agreed that the two sauces (hot honey and the ranch [not sure]) did NOT compliment to the fried pepperoni. Alan stopped over to check on us, and when I told him about the sauces, he suggested a "no longer on the menu" gravy they used to pair with the appetizer. We tried that instead, and BINGO! I've been borderline-stalker obsessed with Mash'D's meatloaf--akaushi beef, roasted sweet corn and garlic, melted cheddar cheese, and a smoky ketchup with a zing--for years now. In the mood for a dish that would comfort my frazzled nerves, I ordered this not-so optically attractive meal and fell for it like a love-starved teenager falls for the first person who utters a disinterested hi on the first day of school. Came across this place while traveling for work and I am impressed! I haven't had meatloaf in forever, and when I saw it on the menu, on this cold February evening, I KNEW that's what I wanted! It did not disappoint! Served in the cutest cast iron dish over a bed of Mash'd Potatoes, it gave me LIFE!!! My food came out quickly, but it took a while to get the staff's attention when I wanted to order a cocktail and to go bag, but she was still nice. I ended up getting the tiger's milk cocktail and it wasn't quite what I expected. If you're a texture person, I'd choose something else on the drink menu, as it has chunks of pineapple that clog your straw a bit, but I like the presentation, which comes in a mason jar.
