There was live music playing during our visit, adding a really nice touch to the laid-back atmosphere. They also offer snacks for purchase (paid at the cashier). One suggestion: it would be nice to see more non-alcoholic options besides just soda--maybe a craft NA beer or mocktail for those not drinking (like myself). Lots of great variety here! We all felt a little shorted on the tasting itself, as the woman leading out group was spread thin helping/educating multiple groups at once. We of course had to get a charcuterie plate to pair, and that was delightful. Best part? You get to take a bottle home of your favorite wine you tasted, which was a total surprise to us. In addition to their wines, they have tons of other drinks available at the bar. Custom cocktails, a whole section dedicated just to Old Fashioneds, plus some local brews. Their food menu is made up of mostly snack-style food, with many tasty picks from cheeses and meats, to spreads and small pizzas. While I understand that every job has its challenging moments, those conversations are best kept out of earshot of guests, as they can detract from an otherwise enjoyable experience. Aside from that, our visit was enjoyable, and that's the one area I would recommend improving.

The mansion was built in 1856, making it the first mansion in Lake Geneva. The estate has been completely redone but charming details were kept. Along with a mansion where you can book a room, Maxwell also includes beautiful gardens, lounges, outdoor fireplaces, a heated pool, croquet and bocce ball. There is also a separate area in the back with motel rooms. Like I said, I was there for a lil' drink. There's a bar inside the mansion (Apothecary Bar) with all kinds of medical and druggist paraphernalia, with the space being a tribute to Dr. Philip Maxwell. But it's the speakeasy, which is accessible outside in the front of the house, that you'll want to visit. Ask for the password inside the mansion, and they will let you into a dark, below-ground bar. It's all decorated in prohibitionist flyers, and even the bartenders are dressed up in period costumes. It's a really cool and unique bar in Lake Geneva.

A few days after we visited the speakeasy, we went in to try the apothecary bar to get some food and drink. A friendly helpful bartender, explained all their creative cocktails, shared the pub food that they offered, and answered questions. We ordered a flatbread pizza and a spinach artichoke dip as well as a couple of cocktails. They served us at a table where we sat on a couch in a room just across the hall and were quite comfortable. There are other rooms where you can go - not much seating in the actual apothecary bar.

We asked if we could get a table by the window and she graciously accommodated our request. Our server, Tanya, greeted us and asked if we wanted to start with a bottle of wine, or cocktail. After a brief review of the menu we decided to start with a beer. My wife had a Peroni, Nasto Azzurro and I chose the New Glarus Spotted Cow. The bus server brought us a basket of warm bread, olive oil, and shredded Parmesan to get us started. Tanya returned and we decided that a cold night warranted a hot bowl of Minestrone Zuppa soup. The soup was made with vegetables , pasta shells, parmesan, broth , and pesto. A great start that brought the right amount of warmth to the beginning of our meal. Tanya was exceptional. She checked on us periodically and did not rush us to order the next course. I mention this because a lot of restaurants have adopted a policy to seat you, feed you, and rush you out the door. Amazing martini. It was strong, flavorful, and garnished with a slice of orange. Best cocktail on the menu. Wonderful, sublime, and tasty. Tanya surprised us with a slice of New York cheesecake with a candle and a Happy Birthday placard made with chocolate. Thank you. The cheesecake was amazing. Thick graham cracker crust and a rich New York cheesecake drizzled with Carmel and a side of whip cream, blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry. WOW. Loved it!
