With most of these style restaurants, tend to do a great job with alcohol but when it comes to food, they lack good stuff. MJ is no different. We went with a group of 8. If you want bar food, this is a good place. Deep fried everything. Lower quality steaks. So/so service. All of the meals came out at different times. Burgers were over done. Beers were warm. I get this place is a staple in the area but seriously, venture out of the area! I can see it being a great spot of HH or a drink. Not on my agenda to return. Food is less than mediocre. My wife and I decided to try the Mason Jar after reading some of the reviews, and I know you can't make everyone happy... We were staying in the hotel next door for a nightly staycation... The place was ehhh, nothing special and there's no reason to come back as TGI Friday's or Chili's is just as good, and closer... Food was ok at best.. my wife's French onion soup was very bland and pretty tasteless. My burger was ok. Cooked to order, but where was the fixin's? No L/T/O or pickles?? Weird, I thought all burgers come with that, if not requested not to be. But what really took us was the $9.79 for "3 halves" potato skins appetizer.. Pretty expensive for 1 and a half potatoes, some cheese and bits of bacon. Now, our server Frazz, was very attentive and polite. Great service. I had refills on the table before I was done with my prior drink... and something that I rarely see or get, is a fresh lemon wedge in refills of Iced tea... you usually get the same glass and used/squeezed lemon wedge still in the glass. 15 Sep update: Frazz was a guy and I'm not sure saying anything to "him" would have helped my 3 halves of tater skins and I wasn't looking for a free app.. Help me and others now... Lower the price or double the amount of skins you give.. Potatoes aren't that expensive... And L/T/O and pickles should always accompany your burger... You shouldn't have to ask for them. read more

Been coming here for many years and it continues a download slide. First and foremost, don't even think about the pizza here. It used to be one of first wood fired pizzas in the area but now it's plain God-awful. Seems like frozen pizza warmed up. Crust right of Shop Rite freezer section. Blame, pale, white and like cardboard. I've had burgers here and they are ok. BBQ used to be great but not tastes industrial fast- food. Bar is nice. Good beer selections. A few of us went hiking/fishing down the road and we just wanted to eat dinner together before parting ways and ending the gorgeous weekend. The closest restaurant was Mason Jar, so Mason Jar it was. I don't recall ever leaving a restaurant so unsatisfied AND baffled. 1) Bartender (or whoever made our martinis) - I ordered the Pineapple Martini and it was served with a rather thick layer of what looked like a mix of froth/curdled milk (see picture). Gross. Only one other person ordered a martini (chocolate banana) and well - pass on that one too. Luckily, everyone else got a drink that was safe. 2) Kitchen - I ordered the 'Portabello mushrooms sautéed in olive oil and balsamic vinegar over baby arugula with tomatoes, red onions and parmesan cheese'. Now, how can any restaurant mess up on SALAD!?! Barely any dressing, tomatoes were definitely not fresh, a few dried up red onion slices and oh - no parmesan cheese. My friend ordered chicken fingers and it came out last! Everyone else got burgers and burnt ends, but chicken fingers took the longest to come out (5 minutes after everyone else was served). Granted, the waitress told us the order was messed up - still. It took about 40 minutes to get our food. 3) Waitress - She was nice, but a bit inexperienced (they're hiring, so may not be all that selective if they're really understaffed?). Remember that I ordered the salad that was suppose to come with parmesan. I told the waitress that I believe my salad came with parmesan and asked if she can check for me. Now, I'll preface that I can be soft spoken, so maybe she didn't hear me because she came back with a grated parm cheese -- the kind you use to sprinkle on your pizza/pasta. At this point, anything else that we were going to experience during our dining experience was possible. Is it too much of me to expect shaved parmesan? 4) Neighbor - There was an older couple dining near us. Before leaving, they advised us to check our receipt before paying because they didn't get 2-3 items but were charged for it. 5) Manager - My husband (worked in the food industry for many years) could not leave without informing the manager of our experience. He wanted to tell him so they are aware and maybe improve. Unfortunately, there was no manager there for him to speak to at 7:30pm on a Sunday night. He was told the manager was going to be back in an hour. As I conclude this review, I'm still baffled. Will never come here again. read more

My bestest food pal started working near this place and he mentioned he wanted to try it. Went yesterday,the place smells of amazing bar b q when you walk in.They also have plenty of outdoor seating available. We went in,went to get seated and it was the Hostess' first day.We know because she said so when we approached and said we'd like an indoor table for 2. Ok...poor kid...so we follow her to a table that she asks a waiter about and he told he it was ok to seat us there. Waitress came over and got our drinks pretty quickly but then that was it. We sat about 10 minutes wanting to order what smelled so good! Then I could see our waitress having a detailed conversation with another waitress who had offered to take our table because our original waitress seemed to be swamped.It seemed our waitress didn't want to give us up but then she realized I was watching and listening so she did.Waitress # 2 finally comes over to take our order.She was very good.Bestie's Coke was flat and nasty and she happily and promptly brought him something more palatable. We had the bbq ribs and some sides. Everything was incredible!!!Fall off the bone ribs!Perfectly seasoned and flavored! We will be back for sure and hopefully by the time of our return their staffing will be a bit more evened out.They do have a help wanted sign outside,so any displaced waitstaff looking,check them out!Its a hopping place and while it was obvious some staff were new,they seemed pretty content so you can probably do well there. read more

ALMOST didn't stop by this restaurant because of the 3 star review, so glad I decided to try it out for myself! My friends and I, after hours of snow tubing down the road, decided to stop in for dinner. We all initially wanted burgers and fries but the menu had a pretty large selection of barbecue so we thought why not try it out. The ribs, pulled pork, wings, the dessert ....... Delicious!!!! I feel like you probably couldn't go wrong with everything else on this menu, there was a great selection. Barbecue is good, other food is obviously prepared cutting corners. The problem with the mason jar right now is they are so understaffed and overwhelmed and the wait staff just can't be happy or kind because of the amount of stress they put under. Had the 10oz Mason burger cooked rare with motzerella cheese and bacon. The burger was cooked perfectly rare and the flavors were amazing. For dessert we had the mud pies. Was served a giant brownie with a large scoop of ice cream with plenty of hot fudge and whipped cream on top. The brownie was definitely enough for two people after a big dinner. I have the Yelp app in order to find decent food and places to go. I very very rarely review a place. After coming to The Mason Jar, well... Ugh. Filthy. It's disgusting. There is crud and slime around the beer taps and where the bartenders make drinks. The trashcan in the women's room had black stuff all over the bottom of it from the mop that is probably used once a month. I'm not sure how the mirror behind the bar is so gross? Food was way too expensive for what it was. Got the strip steak, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese was pretty good, I'll give them that. The steak, ordered it medium rare. Got it medium, no big deal. Somehow got baked beans? They fixed that easily though and gave me the potatoes that I ordered. Didn't ever get the starter salad. Won't be back simply due to the lack of cleanliness. I'm happy I didn't see the kitchen. Probably would have walked out. Probably should have anyways. Response to Joel: I was there on Sunday April 3rd 2016, around 6pm. Posted this as I was sitting at the bar. Have you not been in the restaurant in a while? Because the liquor bottles were covered with a thick layer of dust and the ceiling is practically brown. Gave this place another try - UGH Again GREAT bar scene. STRONG drinks! Service is always amazing and I ALWAYS see the owner walking around talking to patrons. Place has everything going for it BUT Food is always a disappointment! I read the description for a special - slow cooked brisket over pappardelle. Sounded amazing. I pictured bits of brisket (cooked so long in flavorful juices till it fell apart) strewn over pasta. What I received was 5 thick slices of firm brisket over pappardelle with a beefaroni tasting sauce over the pasta. It was awful. Only had a few bites. Kudos to whomever writes their menu descriptions. My bf had the salmon burger and loved it. He actually wouldn't even offer me a bite. Just a burger next time for me! read more

Haven't been here in a while so the bf and I along with another couple came here Saturday night it wasn't crowded at all which I wasn't expecting and we were seated rite away. We ordered a few beers and waters and looked over the menu. We decided on mild wings for the table that were served with blue cheese dressing and the usual celery stalks, I ordered an onion soup, and a 3 cheese pizza for the table. The wings were good not the best not the worst I've ever had but the flavor was very tasty and enjoyable. Onion soup was the same as the wings not the best not the worst. The pizza is always my favorite part of the meal here.. Crispy crust with just the right amount of seasoning to it, this pie was extra cheesy and I loved it. I believe the three cheeses were provolone, muenster, and parmesan topped with oregano.. If your looking to try they're pizza go for the mason jar three cheese I can't see anyone being disappointed. For dinner Lauren and I ordered the crab cake sliders (sorry no picture I was hungry) they were served on "Hawaiian buns" (liars they weren't) and a choice of a side I chose sweet potato fries which were crisp and perfect. The crab cakes were just ok nothing to write home about but i was surprised to find it was real crab and not imitation. (note to self never order seafood at a BBQ place). My boyfriend ordered a cheese steak with the cajun fries which were delicious and crispy. My friend Barry ordered a french dip which looked pretty awesome tender roast beef stacked high and served with au jus for dipping and cajun fries as well. Def gonna have to get that for myself next time. Now the show stopper was dessert.. I live for this cheesecake in a jar. I always get strawberry well because that what I love (you can get blueberry as well) I also only eat half so I can eat it in bed like a big fat fatty later on. It's served in a mason jar and it's a layer of cheesecake then gram-crackers and topped with your fruit of choice and whipped cream. If you don't finish it they give you a lid to take it home.. The sitting area has views of mops, brooms, mop buckets, garbage cans - NOT PRETTY - cheap and dirty looking. Invest in nice plantings and or pickets fence to create a pretty outside sitting- this is the new normal. Is not just about sitting outside, it's about making it nice. When I approached the table to be seated , the older man saw me as he cleaned tables but did not acknowledge me - very rude and bad customer service. A tall older man eventually acknowledged us and sat us. He kept forgetting to keep hi mask on and would pull it up as he kept remembering but this was as he was out with customers. The burger was delicious, the skirt steak was good too. It cane with potatos but it had cheese all over them and it did not say it on the menu. The prices are ok a bit on the high. read more

Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Typical bar scene with dining areas to the side. This place is in the heart of Ramapo College and the bar area is large. I expect this place draws or drew a lot of college kids to the area. Besides that, the place could be considered an American Continental style of dining environment. Noise/sound level: Anywhere from average to overly loud depending on how many people are dining or if karaoke is going on at the bar. Menu: American Continental style, large, and covers a lot of different bar flavors typically scene at various pubs. The menu is slightly large further causing confusion for diners. Service: Very good, quick, and helpful. Food: A party of four of us had the family feast for four. It consisted of a variety of BBQ meats, pulled pork, brisket, pork loin, burnt ends, smoked sausage, mac-n-cheese, spinach, and corn bread. While the value of the diner was excellent, the food was a bit dry and required significant amounts of liquid just to get some of the meat down. However, the food was tasty enough to keep us eating, and bring the rest home for left owners. Bar: Fully stocked with some extraordinary beer selections. Price: Average to value friendly. Overall: A bar scene that seems to have had former glory in it's hayday, but not a place I wouldn't return to if I'm ever up in Mahwah again. read more

The service is horrible along with the food that barely comes out of the kitchen. When they have a band they pack people in to the point of it being a fire hazard. The owner comes over while waiting for food and slaps a $25. minimum per person at table on bill at the last minute. Then he moves your table while eating to provide a small dance floor. Stopped in here for dinner with coworkers while on a business trip and it was an A-Ok experience. It was a good experience to try a local place down the street from our hotel. Walked in and was greeted quickly, got seated right away. The only thing that I would say is that the tables are a little small. We were 3 people at a table of 4 and it felt a little tight. Our server was friendly and took our order quickly. I ordered the Scallop Salad which was seared scallops with greens, strawberries, cucumbers, chives and Gorgonzola cheese with a citrus vinaigrette. It was tasty but it needed something more, maybe a few more scallops (there were 3 smaller pieces) or maybe if it was a different salad base. I guess for the price I expected a little more. All in all, it seemed like a fairly popular place. I would definitely try something off of their Seasonal Menu next time. read more

After an afternoon of hiking I looked forward to a couple of cold beers and a good burger. Unfortunately I chose to go to the Mason Jar...the draft beer was flat, so I switched to bottled beer. I asked for my burger medium, it came well done...very well done...and not hot. Fries were also not hot. I would have sent my meal back if anyone had inquired if it was prepared to my liking...no one did. Fortunately for them I was extremely hungry so I ate the dry burger...thankfully there was an ample supply of ketchup to get the burger down. I have had similar experiences at other local bars & grills. I think the problem lies in the way the staff is trained...or not trained. The fact that most establishments use a tip share process...is enables poor service...NO ONE DOES THEIR JOB! They assume someone else will do it. You can get a much better burger at Five Guys or Smash Burger at a fraction of the price and be served by employees that seem to appreciate their job and like their costumers. This was my first time here, and it was a Friday night. I was there for a class reunion but stopped by the might before to check out the live band I could hear from the parking lot. My daughter and I stopped in late to listen to the music and have a drink. The band was good, they played a mix of oldies but goodies to prince... very nice mix to suit all tastes . We ordered a pitcher of sangria for $26, it was just enough for us to have a couple drinks each. The next might I went here for the reunion, the space was small for the number of people but we made the best of it and had a great time regardless. The food served was pretty good, I had meatballs, fish, pasta..lots of choices, and everything tasted good. Drinks were included and the bar kept them flowing all night. Definitely have the lobster cobb salad! Generous portion of lobster on everything you expect a cobb salad to be. Our baked brie with raspberry jam appetizer was a special that I hope shows up on the regular menu. It was delicious! However, the bartender on that night needs to learn how to make a proper bourbon Manhattan. First off, no choice of bourbons was given, and that was needed since we were in a back room away from the bar and had no idea what was on the bar back. Second, the sweet vermouth was sitting on the bottom of the glass, not mixed. Third, the glass was filled with ice cubes. A proper Manhattan is stirred or shaken with ice and strained into a coupe glass. Fourth, I didn't detect the requisite bitters. On the plus side, they didn't forget a cherry. We had a perky and enthusiastic server who was attentive, but not annoying. May she keep her cheerful disposition as long as she works there! read more

The waiter (I wish I could remember his name) was so attentive to us, was hilarious and gave great recommendations. We ordered the brisket and chicken BBQ meals and really enjoyed them. The place could use a pick me up and the noise from the bar area was loud. The sangria was okay, at best. They also offer live band shows located out back of the building, where they also have outdoor dining. It's a cool, old fashioned place. They are very family friendly. read more

food and service was great but here's the problem; - they tax you for a tip which is illegal - they charge you for a 20% tip on the reciept which makes no sense because you either might not like the service and want to leave a 10% tip but you also might love it and want to leave a 30%. edit: since it's already on the reciept, people might miss it and leave an extra tip. its a scam read more

This is the first time I've eaten here. I've been there to hear music in the past, which is a nice little venue. We went on a Sunday night and were promptly seated. Our server immediately showed up asking for a drink order before we had a chance to see the menu. I realized later they were probably trying to move us out quickly, as other people started coming in later. We had the fried calamari with Cajun sauce. Try another sauce if you're looking for real Cajun taste. The calamari was OK. I had the vegetable wrap, which was good. They marketed it with cole slaw and I'm glad it came with a bean salad instead. (It was good.) My friend got the Cuban Pork sandwich and was only able to finish half.
