I travel a ton. Lots of restaurants and bars. Because I am alone I tend to sit at the bar. Company usually is good and more relaxing for me to unwind. I sat at the bar for 10 min without being acknowledged. She talked to locals at the other end. Served Togo/off-site beers, served wait staff off the tap near my seat. Never even acknowledged I existed. I have no car and did not want to Uber, just a long week. This is only place near hotel. Real training reds to occur. 1 afternoon bartender and 2 that are starting and no service. Moved to table, sweet waitress, beer in an instant. Will decide review after food. read more

My spouse and I went for a Friday dinner and ordered steak (medium) and coconut shrimp appetizer. The steak came out burnt and you can taste the charcoal in it. Also, the coconut shrimp was so tough (a result of fast cooking) and tasted like a rubber. We complained and the owner came out explaining that this is the way they cooked. their steak and we should eat it!! What a jerk. We often eat at his restaurant but he just lost us and a lot of our friends and their friends too. To add insult to injury, we still paid for our dinner. What a shame.... read more

What a disappointment! After a long day of meetings, my colleagues & I were so looking forward to a delicious meal in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere. Instead all we received was an attitude by our waitress, Jackie, who apparently does not like her job. From the moment we sat down, we were treated as if serving me and my colleagues was a huge inconvenience. The food was average and I would not even be writing a review if it wasn't for the appalling service. I am someone who always tip a minimum of 20% however in this case there was no way in good conscience that I could reward such terrible service with a 20 percent tip. I have worked works in the service industry and I understand the importance of tips and would never short a wait staff if thgey had done their job satisfactory. My family has been going to the mason jar for around 15 years. It has changed ownership a few times, but the menu and food have stayed pretty consistent. Never in my life have I felt at home hours away, the bar staff was working harder then DJais in Belmar on a holiday weekend and I even had a chance to get a tour of the kitchen which an inspector would loath because finding something wrong is near impossible! The atmosphere is of a pub with the touch love and the dining area is filled with laughs and love. This restaurant has a hum, not annoying but rather joyful and pleasant. Went here every night for dinner while staying in the area for my son's competition. Everything I had was great. Their corn bread is the best corn bread anywhere hands down. Had drinks and dinner with co-workers. The bar was able to accommodate a party of nine people. The place is not large and was full on a Thursday night. I recommend reservations if you want to have food. The menu is quite extensive for a bar and there's a selection of beer on tap. The drinks including mixed drinks are served in mason jars. Tried the happy hour special drink, which was less than desirable and the waitress switched the drink for another, no questions asked. The wait staff and manager were very attentive and accommodating. The place is great for happy hour and to mingle with friends. It is a bit loud especially towards the front by the bar and music. Came here with friends for birthday party (We aren't old enough to drink) Experience was really nice, the baby back ribs were done really well. Was my first time eating memphis ribs (they were pretty dry so I poured the given sauce on them), friend complained the side of his memphis ribs were a little overburnt but he said they were really good anyways. Found myself in Jersey this weekend for a family function. We were need of a place where all of us could find something to eat and watch the game and the mason jar fit the bill. It was a great decision. We sat in the side room where there was plenty of room to relax and a large TV showing the game for our entertainment. Everyone at the table got something different, from BBQ to fajitas, seafood, and pasta, and nobody was disappointed. I had penne with broccoli in an oil and garlic sauce and it was great! We also ended up order quite a few mason jar cocktails and they were all nice and strong! A long time favorite of ours, but going downhill. Stopped in last evening at a not particularly busy time. Placed an order for drinks and dinner, the drinks arrived but then we sat for 40 minutes with no sign of food, even the starter we had ordered. And no sign of our waitress. Finally went on a search, found her, was told "I've been asking for it"", no apologies. 30 seconds later the starter appeared, when plunked down hard on our table wordlessly by our waitress who walked away. Ended up here last night with my in-laws. It had it's high and low points overall it was just as Yelp says, A-OK. We got here at around 6:30, it was decently busy, although the place is huge so don't be discouraged if the parking lot looks full. We went in and decided to post up at the bar until the rest of the fam arrived. They have a decent beer selection--your typical offerings, but they also had Flying Fish IPA and a local brewery Defiant on tap as well. My husband and I got the Defiant, I don't remember what my FIL got but it was probably something light. The bartender was friendly and engaging, talking about beers and stuff. I would feel comfortable drinking here for sure. The rest of our party arrived and we were promptly seated in the waaaaaaay back of the restaurant. Opened our menus---jeez this place has a lot of food to offer, easily 3 pages of options to choose from. I used to think this was a great idea but as I'm getting older I'm realizing offering less and doing it well is always a better option than offer a million things that are ehh. Our waiter was nice enough, they seemed a little understaffed perhaps, he didn't check on us too much and whenever we ordered drinks they took quite awhile to come back--I know the bar impacts that as well but we did take notice of the lag in service We got 2 orders of corn nuggets, tex-mex eggrolls, and zucchini sticks for appetizers. The corn nuggets were honestly pretty tasty--I mean they're fried corn doughballs so what's not to like, but they were done well. Not overly greasy, nice fresh corn, tasted light---my one gripe with them was they gave us a dipping sauce that basically tasted like ketchup and bbq sauce--it was kina gross. Tex-mex eggrolls were very good, stuffed with chicken, cheese, and I think poblanos. The dipping sauce that came with these was way better, it was like a sweet chili glaze very tasty. I didn't try the zucchini sticks, there's just nothing appealing to me about a breaded fried zucchini. We all got house salads, for 5.95 it's a pretty decent plate of mixed greens. Meals came out not too long after, I got the veggie panini--the rest of the meals around the table were bbq samplers, a veggie burger (they actually give you 2 veggie burgers), the beef rib platter, and santa fe chicken. My sandwich was ok. I don't understand why places think that throwing squash and mozzarella on a panini equals awesome--it's about halfway to awesome but you need more flavor on that sammich if you ask me. Throw a little tomato jam or pesto spread on that thing! Anyway as I just said--my sandwich was ok. The consensus around the rest of the table was that the bbq was decent for north jersey. I stole a few bites off my husbands plate, his chicken tasted the best to me which is odd considering it was sitting next to beef brisket and pork bbq. The cornbread was tasty and fresh. Overall the tab came to roughly $180 for 5 people with 1-2 drinks a piece. Not terrible. The food was not amazing, the service was not amazing, but I would come back. Great service even though we were clearly the last people to leave the restaurant and probably kept the waiter there later than he had to be last night. I was still hungover from the night before and the waiter was awesome and kept the water coming. The decor was pretty cool and the restaurant is a neat concept. No one in my group was that impressed with the food. My pulled pork sandwich was dry and I had to add some of their bbq sauce to it. The sauce was very watery but had a decent flavor to it. The cajun fries were on the sweet side and didnt have much flavor. I think the problem with the place is how big their menu is... No restaurant can be good at cooking that many things. Because of the awesome service I would be willing to give it another shot next time I'm in town if they downsized the menu. read more

It has been a very long time since I been to "The Mason Jar". I want to say it has been at least 15 plus years. Prior to that I worked here for a month or so almost 25 years ago as a bus boy. My memories of the place where pretty good so by chance and on my birthday, we happened to be in the area and on a whim... We stopped in for dinner. Being that I definitely older and hopefully wiser, I give you my review. First Impressions... This vibe and the décor was as I remembered it. Some looks in a restaurant are timeless while can be dated. In this case it was timeless because it had same feel I remember back in 1993. That works for the place given the cuisine. This was the first place I ever went into that served beverages in mason jars and certainly wasn't the last. Now it seems pretty much everyone is doing it. The Challenges... Having a 2 week craving for BBQ, I ordered the pulled pork and I did so with an open mind since I wasn't so much a BBQ kind of guy back in the day. Given the price on the menu, I thought that the portions were too small for the size of the plate as well as the price. That includes the 2 side items (Apple Sauce and Mac) as well as what I can only describe as an Entenmann's cupcake sized corn muffin. As for the pulled pork, the base pork was good but given the open real estate on the plate, it didn't give the ROI on the $16 that I hoped for. Another review commented on a similar experience on the pulled pork. Like that reviewer, I asked for a side of BBQ sauce to and something to it. What I got was 3 bottles (Mason Jar Regular, Mason Jar Spicy and Sweet Baby Rays). I used the regular to add something to it. Additionally... The Lobster Bisque was good enough but not $8 good considering the portion sized. In hindsight, I suppose I would have enjoyed it best in my years when I wasn't around when I was in the market for beers and appetizers. I was under 21 when I worked here and pretty much a family guy now but not living in the area. The Positives... Our waiter and the staff worked hard. There was a part in the front where we were seated when we came in and they broke it down pretty fast and efficiently as they where getting ready for another party that was seated at the tail end of our stay. Looking at everyone else eating there, people seemed fairly content and that is something that is nice to see no matter where you are eating. It shows that people genuinely care about a place that has been around for 41 years. Final Thoughts... Thought #1 was on legacy. I was pondering if a place that has been a while can ride on reputation alone or elect to re-invent the wheel. Although commonsense seems to suggest a balanced approach is needed, it seems me "The Mason Jar" voted for legacy based in the pricing and portions. It seems like the smart move in many ways. Thought #2 was on BBQ as a cuisine. I am by no means a BBQ expert but it seems to me that a place with such a storied history is leaving something on the table by not embracing the cuisine visually with a smoker or more in house BBQ products. I say that because what I was served didn't match all the signage posted outside touting BBQ. Thought #3 was on a reply I saw to a previously review from ownership. I don't think it isn't necessary to complain to management anytime expectations aren't met. For starters, we have our own expectations of a restaurant that can't be settled on site. That is what a review like this is for... to share "foods of thought" in a rational manner in hopes a decision maker out there is listening. read more

We go to the Mason Jar on Friday nights (hubby and I). Great bar atmosphere, specialty drinks and top shelf vodkas and tequila. Most definitely many items to choose from on the menu. Thin crust pizza, to burgers (which are great). The appetizers are really good, the nachos or the quesadillas. The drinks are served in a nice deep glass and the bartenders are really friendly. Everything from sliders to the pulled pork is excellent. It's perfect pub fare! read more

I would give this place 3 stars for their food and service... well maybe 3.5 stars. It's your typical pub fare style food, and most of it is a guilty pleasure. The pizza is actually very good. What really sets this place apart though (and brings up my rating of it) is the atmosphere when they have a live band playing. They always seem to generally do a great job for local entertainment. We enjoy taking the kids here after a late night game! They always have what we want even when we come in at past 8:30pm. Very family friendly restaurant. I've been here many times before but was very disappointed with the brunch I took my family to for Father's day. There wasn't enough wait staff at the packed restaurant and I had to flag down someone for drinks. We were halfway through our food when we finally got coffee and water. The waiter was a very nice young man, it was not his fault. We were cramped in our seats, the food just ok (I thought there would be way more of their yummy BBQ) and then no one felt well later on. I have been coming to the Mason jar for lots of Years. Tonight we have gotten poor service tonight at our table. The Mason jar needs to hire more people because it seems like they're understaffed. On top of it our waiter never came by to see what we wanted he wind up vanishing and disappearing! that's not cool! To me that's poor service. Let me talk about the Cobb salad it did not taste right! it taste like the egg it had a distinctive weird taste and I had to spit it out of my mouth! I had blue cheese and The ranch did not taste right like it went bad I didn't joyed my Cobb salad that much. The soup was fabulous The downside to the soup it was just way too salty. I hope one day the mason jar will hire more people and they need to check there dairy products and the chicken needs to be cooked more I think the chicken went bad to. I often will come here when I'm in town traveling and the food is always great! The steak is cooked perfectly, the service is readily available and the choices are excellent. Few things surprise me these days but tonight was different. I left my credit card on the table and when I checked into my hotel a few miles away, I realized what I was in for. I called the restaurant to confirm they had it and they did. I told them I was in town for business and didn't have a car and asked if they could send me my card in the mail. To my surprise, the manager, Ira, asked where I was staying and showed up at my hotel lobby 10 minutes later to drop my card off for me. I am in awe of this customer service!
