Poor experience. Would not return. My son's steak, which he ordered medium, was like shoe leather. He sent it back to get a burger. Took another half an hour for the burger to come out. They messed up my daughter's veggie burger by putting cheese on it, which she didn't ask for, so her meal came out 10 minutes after everyone else's. My jambalaya was not good. Very disappointed! I went there because my daughter's track meet was at Ramapo College down the street. I ordered the jar-b-q chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries and creamed spinach. I was told by the server that the sandwich is like pulled pork, except they use chicken. When I got the food, the chicken sandwich was dried cubes of chicken with very little sauce and the fries were cold. The creamed spinach was the only tasty item. Dinner here on Tuesday evening about 8:00pm. Didn't feel like cooking dinner. Texas style short rib, very tender, juicy, generous portion for any appetite. Comes with two side dishes. Delicious baby back ribs in two flavors also comes with two sides. Menu varied and extensive enough to satisfy any appetites. Prices are reasonable & portions are large. Service are quick & on Tuesday night no waiting don't know about weekends. Looking over the diners seems like a local watering hole with regulars. I have been a frequent costumer for the past year. Every time I have come in, I have always been welcomed and served right away! The mason jar is a friendly atmosphere with great service. Though all bartenders I've had are great, the best is Kerri who seems to always have a packed house, yet takes the time to make sure my beer is always full and that my needs are met. Staying at the hotel next door and really didn't want to look too far for dinner. A few of the reviews made me 2nd guess but convenience won out. The place was busy but large enough to handle it. The clientele ranged from sports teams to suits. The menu was quite long, typical of a diner. I opted for a linguine and clam special and it was quite good. I haven't been there since last winter, before the TV show "What Would You Do?" arrived at the Mason Jar. After that, business wasn't the same. Sometimes doing more $, sometimes doing less. When I went the service wasn't top notch, and when we got some food, it was just plain fine. I usually go once in a while, and I recommend you do that to. One of the few places in Mahwah that knows how to handle a crowd on a Friday or Saturday. Seated us right away. We all ordered various BBQ. I had the brisket, my son the Carolina Pulled pork and his friend the half rack of ribs. We were all very happy with our choices. Sides were excellent! Pick the Mac and cheese. They use a thicker noodle and it goes perfectly with BBQ. Service was excellent and prices affordable. I take my team there once a year coming home from a meet and I have never had a complaint from any of them. Pizza is good and thin crust and brick oven. his used to be a very good place, but I will add in a disclaimer in that I haven't been there probably since the late 90's. I am an alum of Ramapo College right up the road and was a great place to get a bite to eat late at night and didn't have the typical bar atmosphere--was more like an actual restaurant. Burgers were very good and I always thought it was neat that if you ordered a soda that you would actually get it in a mason jar as opposed to a glass. The only thing we ever had a problem with there is that your food will tend to get cold very fast if you end up sitting under the a/c ducts in the summer and it does get a bit cold in there. I got brave and tried the Mason Jar again. Big mistake. The food was pretty bad before, but has only gotten worse. Ok... Let's get right to it... I ordered the stuffed shrimp. It was awful. It didnt come with a salad, but you could order two sides. Why wasn't salad an option for a side? so, i decided to just order one side dish... the smashed potatoes. In all fairness. they were pretty decent. but as i mentioned before, the shrimp was horrible. The sauce was bitter lemon and salty. Meantime, my friend ordered tuna. It came RAW! She had to send it back. i made the mistake of ordering a lobster roll to take home for lunch. Trust me... This isn't your Maine lobster roll. Honestly I am so upset after spending my money at this place. I do not know if they have new management or other problems but this place has really taken a turn for the worst. The burgers were burnt and had no taste. My friend and I were given maybe a combined 12 fries in the entire two platters (costs $11). I had a birthday at this restaurant years ago. I cannot believe how terrible it has become.The bartender was nice but overall it was a very bad experience. You can find much better places on Rt. 17 and the north jersey area. Always a pleasure coming to this establishment. I'm living in Texas now, but when I lived in the Mahwah/Oakland area, this was a must for after work drinks and dinner, or a fun time on the weekend. Ira is a top notch guy who was always respectful to me, even if I had a few too many drinks and got rowdy from hearing my favorites on the jukebox...(happens to everybody, right? I think..) Anyway, the staff is also just as great, as I have made lifelong friends out of a few of them. I do miss this spot quite regularly, and make it a habit to stop in every time I am back in town. This is probably one of the most overrated restaurants I've ever been to. Highly recommended by friends and family alike, I thought it'd be a good place to try. Boy, was I wrong. It started off well after the wings and potato skins were pretty decent. That's the only redeeming qualities that this place has to offer. The staff was a huge concern. The waitress that we had didn't look like she was happy at her job, but that could be because the owner was a jerk. He would not qualify to another table's requests. It doesn't end there. The ravioli sauce was bland and was similar to Ragu. The brisket was tough and the turkey club was hard to chew. And, the above food and a burger cost $90! The beef brisket is a most try dish and their homemade barbeque sauces are outstanding. I also like how the food is prepared in a rather fast manner. I visited the Mason Jar on June 20, 2010 for dinner. I found the prices high for the surrounding area. More importantly, the food served (pork) was rancid and spoiled. When I brought this to the waiter and manager's attention., they didn't care. I was told that I had to pay for inedible, unsafe food. I'd give this place between 2 and 3 stars, actually. I've been there twice. It's one of those bars that looks like they have a lot of beers, but really they have the full gamut of shitty American macro-brews and trite imports (Stella, etc.), but few micro-brews. My wife got a lemonade bourbon drink that was very strong. I've never been to the bar at night but it looks horrifyingly divey and like a "kids" bar. The barbecue has been disappointing both times I've been. The food hasn't been hot when it's arrived at the table. The pork ribs really needed sauce--by themselves they weren't very flavorful. The half barbecue chicken was WAY overcooked and dry. The sauces they give you at the table are o.k., but nothing amazing. They need a very spicy one and maybe a Carolina (i.e. mustard based) one. As for the sides, the onion rings are good, the corn-bread o.k., and the mac-and-cheese overcooked with o.k. cheese sauce. The salads were good, if overpriced. All in all, o.k. but nothing special, and NOT worth the cost. As noted in other reviews the service is very slow and the place seems understaffed with wait-staff. There seem to be plenty of hostesses--young women in their late teens/early twenties all tarted up. We had an older woman tonight who was very nice and got our daughter something extra to wear since the place was heavily air-conditioned. But she got swamped and seemed harried by the end. She did a good job, but seemed way overworked. The ambience was pho-dive. It's a weird mix of bar and family restaurant. The seats we had tonight were very uncomfortable. I'm not a big person, but it was hard to squeeze between the table and my booth seat. All in all, a pricey American food joint--one of many around here. Ok so I came here with the old lady looking for some good food and some good drinks. Unfortunately I received neither. I ordered the mason jar drink, I didn't like it so I went to send it back and the waitress was rude... Basically said they wouldn't refund it without me even asking, not ok in my book but whatever I moved on. As for the food we had the spinach dip appetizer... Chips were stale... The dip was microwave garbage.. Half hot, half cold. I had the Cuban and it was just ok... I've had much better at other establishments, I would avoid it. The fries looked gross so I didn't eat them.... As for my girlfriend she had the margarita pizza... That was pretty solid I would recommend their pizza on that alone. Bottom line... Subpar food....
