I stay in the hotel next door all the time. Liked going there because walking distance. I order the Smoked Wings all the time there usually fantastic. This time they were VERY DRY mention to the waiter than asked for owner who came over from the bar and said there weren't dry well I'll tell you as a owner they should always agree with the customer he was nasty. Food was ok, but a little overpriced for what you get. Biggest disappointment was being overcharged for my drinks.... I ordered an "off the menu" drink that is made of 3 different shots. Instead of charging me for a similar drink like a Long Island Ice Tea, they charged me full price for each shot. My party of 3 ordered 5 of these drinks only to find out when the bill came how they were charging me. Even the waiter voluntarily spoke to the manager to reverse the charges and only charge for a standard multi shot drink, but he refused. Oddly enough, I was there the night before with the same group, ordered the same drink and was only charged $8. So what should have been ~$40 for 5 drinks, ended up costing me $101.25. Wow! My 8 year old son and I are staying at the Fairfield inn and suites next to this restaurant, which is the only reason I chose it. It was outstanding! Service was fantastic-- hostess and waitress were friendly and competent. kids menu choices were varied. Potion sizes were enormous-- way too much food! Wine prices were reasonable. I highly recommend the Mason Jar. We stay at this hotel because it's a good stopping point for us on drives from cape cod to Maryland, but we'd never eaten here. I came here last night looking for some good barbecue, and have only one word to describe my experience: phenomenal. Our waitress, Nikki, was extremely friendly and delivered our orders in a timely fashion; and the food itself, especially the barbecue, was absolutely fantastic. We tried the Pitmaster and Burnt Ends, along with two sides of Mac, and the meat was delicious, cooked perfectly, and juicy, while the sides were thick and creamy. Overall, the service was fantastic and the meals were perfect; and I heartily recommend that anyone who is looking for good barbecue stop by. BRUNCH?! Easter was a disgusting disaster. My party and I were seated about 3/4 of a mile away from the food. When I asked for a better spot I was ignored and the hostess quickly walked away. The food...some of the items were never refilled throughout my seating time. I believe the suckling pig had been laying there dead and picked through since the early morning hours. The make-your-own ice cream sundae (yes, super cute idea) was a sticky, unsanitary mess. Was anyone there to clean up? Was anyone there watching the food supply? I think not. I went there On Friday 2-17 had to wait for ever to then be served food that was cold and not good then got attitude from the servers because i wanted to send the food back. Also was there to see the entertainment and the show was supposed to start at 9:30 but they didnt clear the tables out for the band to start setting up till 9:15 ! as a result the band didnt get started till after 10 . lousy set up for music. there is much better places close by Band The Elevators Were excellent though however would rather see them at a place that knows what they are doing. read more

I submitted a previous review but somehow it was deleted. I am resubmitting. We have been going to the Mason Jar for years. The food is generally good; the service usually personable and attentive. But after a recent visit a couple of weeks ago, I have to alert clients about a new very unprofessional practice referenced in another review. Several of us ordered a variety of the burgers. We were alerted that if we wanted lettuce, tomato, or onions that they would be $,79 each. Yes, EACH. It wasn't even listed on the menu. I have been to other similar restaurants that charge extra for the trio....or simply include as part of the price, even if slightly increased. Charging for each is just insulting. Come on owners, let's be professional. Customers aware. Despite the food, service, and fun atmosphere, I will not go back until this policy changes! read more

Went to the Mason Jar Saturday night to hear a band. Checked the Mason Jar's website to check the time It said the band started at 8 pm. We arrived at 7:30 and waited a half hour to get seated. Then we waited another 10 minutes for a server. We ordered drinks. The server asked if Kendall Jackson wine was OK. I answered yes. Got the bill to find out it was $9.50 a glass! That's outrageous for a small glass of Chardonnay! The food was good, but the portions got smaller. Ordered a specialty coffee. Price on the menu $7.75. Price on the bill $8.00. $1.50 for a 1/2 a scoop of ice cream on Apple Crisp. We don't go there but once or twice a year. I think this was my last time. I fee like I got ripped off. There are much better values within a 10 minutes from there. And I will pass on the bad experience to my friends. read more

I like going to the Mason Jar and have for many years. Lately I'm getting tried the the nickel and dime stuff. I ordered mayo on my chicken sandwich and they added a dollar to the bill, really! Another time I ordered a turkey sandwich and asked for lettuce and tomato, 3 dollars added to my bill as "open food". Who eats a turkey sandwich dry? Food was very good and the beer was even better but the service was outstanding! I failed to get the young girls name but she served my girlfriend and I plus our five kids! My girlfriends daughter spilled her drink causing a huge mess and she was right on top of it cleaning up, replacing the drink with a side of ice(what my gf's daughter was trying to get in the first place)! She was on top of all of our orders/ drinks/ refills/ more chips while being very pleasant and joking with us! When we first come to Mahwah a couple of years ago, we often brought visitors to the Mason Jar to enjoy good food. Our last two visits have been terrible. I have worked in a restaurant for years, so to be fair I will break down the review by category. Host: They were pleasant and helpful. Bar: They got us our drinks. But the person serving us had little knowledge about the drinks. Waitress: Lazy, slow, rude. Not helpful. Food: Came out cold, portion sizes did not match for similar dishes. Poorly cooked BBQ. Poor plating. I think we were have done better with a budget microwavable meal. The time we went before this our BBQ was dry. Cost: If it was good BBQ the price would be great. It wasn't good, therefore it cost way to much for bad quality food. read more

This place is awesome to hang out! The bar is large and spacious, the bartenders are friendly and quick, and the atmosphere is always fun. The food consistently is delicious as well! The Mason Jar is a top pick to go and watch sports with friends. It is casual, comfortable, and welcoming. The owner, Ira, is typically there in the evenings and is wonderful. Very disappointing. Came looking for authentic BBQ, found Applebee's. This place specializes in nothing, so they excel at nothing. They serve pizza, steaks, bbq, tacos, hot dogs, burgers...you get the point. I had a half slab of Memphis and a half slab of Kansas City. They were identical except for the kind of rib. Cooked the same, tasted the same, just blah. The ribs were terribly skinny and chewy. The BBQ sauce (which shouldn't be anywhere near Memphis ribs in the first place) had the consistency of water. The sides were just as bad. Frozen coated fries (awful), terrible cole slaw. The cornbread was not bad. The decor is as trite as you can imagine. Fake antiques and street signs hanging all over the place. How original. On the plus side- our server was cordial and efficient. read more

I rarely write a poor review, but this one needs mentioning. Ordered the fish tacos. It was as if they dumped the crumbs from the bag that the battered fish came in, fried them up and sold them as fish tacos. The crumbs were saturated with oil - but the only fish was what may have stuck to the crumbs. It was literally fried bread crumb tacos. I waited and waited at an almost empty bar to flag down the bartender to get change of the 50 so I could go leave a tip. About 20 people from my old job met there this past Friday night for a reunion. The women organizing this were told they had a space that woudl fit everyone in the back and there were no additional changes for the space just wanted to know if everyone would be ordering dinner. So just about everyone ordered dinner and several drinks during the few hours we were there. When we got our bills we were told they added gratuity everyone thought ok "20%" maybe for a big group NO it was $10 per person and most people like myself and the 2 people I sat with had about about a $13 meal so our bill went from $45 to $75. So many of us gave them almost a 100% tip and the one gentleman who did not eat was also charged $10. This should have been explained prior to ordering or even when making the reservation. At the very least I hope the wait staff received some of this money because clearly no one was tipping more. I will never go here again and I will continue to tell everyone I know about this underhanded practice they have. So disappointing. read more

One of the worst meals my wife and I have had in a long time. First of all I order a beer off of beer menu and I'm told it's being substituted with another beer, no big deal. My wife asks if there is a pumpkin ale which there was but tapped out after she had one glass- it's Saturday at 6:00PM , unaccountable. We both order ribs served to us cold, after returning the ribs they are brought back to us so tough (probably from reheating) they are uneatable. Smashed potatoes had raw pieces of potato in the serving also uneatable. My wife and I both left over our meals which should have been a red flag for the server but wasn't or she didn't care. In a more professional setting the server would have notified the manager or owner who would have come over to ask why we didn't eat our meals, but not at the Mason Jar. The Bavarian Pretzel appetizer was outstanding but certainly not worth ever patronizing the Mason Jar again. read more

I've been going to Mahwah for years and I could kick myself for not discovering the Mason Jar until this summer! What a great find! I'm perplexed at the less than enthusiastic reviews by some Yelpers. Alas, I can only tell you of our one experience. Your drinks are served in , guess what, mason jars!!! They also sell their DELICIOUS BBQ sauce in the jars in case you wanna take some home. We did, it was worth it. Our very hungry party of 3 decided to order a family meal deal which said it served 4-6 people. We figured since we were all super hungry it would be just right, We figured it would serve more on the side of 4 people, no way 6. Like the meat would be skimpy, or definitely the sides would be super-small. Um, no! We couldn't have been more wrong! Happily surprised, we were! This family deal, which is on the inside menu only, by the way, not the take-out menu, was only $ 59.99 for a platter with samplings of all their meats, four sides, a basket of cornbread, and a salad. The platter of meat was the size of a Thanksgiving turkey platter, just to give you an idea. It had-Kansas baby-back ribs, Memphis ribs, smoked short ribs, chicken, brisket, pork loin, burnt ends, and smoked sausage!!!! OMG!!! The cornbread!!! Ah, the moist, delicious cornbread. A big basket with no less than a dozen BIG pieces. The salad was a BIG deep bowl that could have fed 10 people, chock full of toppings and some zippy croutons. The sides, huge portions! Little soup crocks filled with mac and cheese, rice, creamed spinach. We had cajun fries as our other side and they too were a large portion of potato wedges heavily dusted with seasoning. I happen to like them. But if you don't like spicy or a lot of seasoning I could see why you wouldn't, as another reviewer stated. The meat was tender and flavorful. Our sides were tasty. The rice had a nice kick, not over-seasoned. The spinach was standard , what you would expect. The mac and cheese was slightly elevated processed type variety but tasty, nonetheless. The cornbread was a standout !!! Their sauces were a winner too, one type was sweet, the other more vinegar based. That's the one we bought to take home. The service was friendly and prompt. The place is rustic and bustling with activity, including a band that was tuning up as we were leaving. I'm thankful we didn't order appetizers! And of course, no dessert was needed! Very hard to eat any more once you reach food coma status!!! Can't wait to try it again, I hear they have pizza! Lol read more

I will start off by saying before tonight I was an avid fan of the restaurant, food and service. I went for brunch every Sun. I met friends there for drinks. I constantly recommended it as a place to meet friends. Tonight I will no longer dine, order or recommend this restaurant. I have never been insulted by such bad service at any place I've gone. I will never make another delivery or catering order there again. I ordered a pizza there to be delivered to Ramapo College while I was at a 3 hour class for my graduate degree. The gal who answered the phone, Nicky(?), took my order and the address down and said it would be delivered in 30. An hour later I called back and she said the delivery person had gone and that nobody answered the door (I was not in an office, I was in a classroom). I asked what room she went to and she replied incorrectly. I, again, gave her the right room number and she said the pizza would be put in the oven again to warm it up and sent out again (a little weird and no apology). An hour and a half go by and I call up to speak to a manager. I ask why the pizza never showed up and if something went wrong. The manager replied "I couldn't keep sending my delivery person to your location." I asked, "WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL ME?" (not yelled). She said the hostess didn't have my number and my mind WAS BLOWN. I asked "Why didn't the hostess have it?" and the response was "You never asked her to take it down." WHAT KIND OF RESTAURANT LEAVES IT UP TO THE CUSTOMER TO LEAVE THEIR NUMBER FOR A DELIVERY. A restaurant that does not ask for a number will most likely have caller ID. The manager then went on to blame me for not leaving the number and for making this delivery very difficult. She blamed me for the wrong address and didn't even entertain the thought that the hostess, who couldn't remember to ask for my number, wrote it down incorrectly. This restaurant has demonstrated the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I have dealt with in the longest of times. Seriously???!!! I had to call back to ask the order to be sent again and it didn't occur to the hostess to ask for my number the SECOND time if they couldn't get the address right the first time??? The manager never sincerely apologized and left me red with anger and even worse completely hungry. I will NEVER deal with this restaurant again. I will constantly remind my friends, family and those I work and go to school with that the service is one of the worst. Thank you, Mason Jar, for your lack of food and service as I try to balance a family, work full-time and go to school full time. Your manager service disgusts me. read more

Went on a random night to celebrate a day of hard work outside. Ended up sitting at the bar with a buddy and the bartender was pretty good, "Sorry don't remember her name." I got the trio sampler which was excellent, the wings were to my shock really good. Ended up throwing her a curve ball and ordering a drink that I knew she wouldn't know, and it came out pretty good. All in all it was a great experience, and I will def go back. My friend enjoyed his filet mingon sandwich quite a bit and I trust his judgement. But I am compelled to write a review after a dinner with a group of friends this past Saturday. My group was shocked by a new and very low class new policy of charging 80 cents for EACH condiment - EACH!! And the extra charges weren't listed in the menu. For those of us selecting the Mason Jar tasty burgers, to be charged $.80 each for a slice of cheese, for a tomato, and for lettuce - it was tasteless and we'll not return until it changes. It's terrible as the food and service is actually good. What's next? Charge for ketchup, extra napkins, and for their barbecue sauces? Come on owners! The Mason Jar used to be a favorite, but no more. We had not been to the place since we moved, about 5 years ago. Service was slow, despite few people actually dining for lunch. My wife's salad was very good, but my French Dip was cool, as were my fries. Right off the bat my wife mentioned that her beer seemed flat. The server mentioned they would check with the bartender. Never saw him again until the end of the meal when he said they have been having trouble with their tap for about a week. While he did offer us a bottled beer, we had already finished the meal and were ready to leave. My wife only drank about 1/4 of t he glass. I can't figure out how they could serve beer that they knew was bad. And the remedy should have come much sooner. Have business in the area for the next 6 months, but we won't be back again. Too bad. Last night, our group of 6 ate dinner here. The restaurant was busy and the food was good. One of our group ordered a second glass of wine which never appeared. We paid our check and we were discussing if we should stay and try ordering the wine again, when the manager came over and said. " we are very busy tonight and really need your table. If you wouldn't mind moving from this table, I will buy all of you a drink." We told him, "how nice" and we got up to follow him. He lead us past the bar and down a hallway to a room that was vacant. Then he said, "I can get you coffee, soda, iced tea or water." I asked, "wine?" He said, "oh no, I can't do that! " To most people, "buy you a drink" means alcohol. So we left and won't be back!
