I went here once and it was not a good experience at all. The atmosphere was loud and chaotic and the service was horrible. Our waitress forgot every request we made and the food took forever to come out. At least it tasted fine though. I just moved to Mahwah the end of last year and was so pleased to discover that The Mason Jar was so close to my new home. The food has always been satisfying and the rustic ambience is fun. As far as the service goes, I have never been disappointed. Our waiter this afternoon was Joe, a very personable and polite young man. We received our drinks and food very quickly and enjoyed chatting with him at the end of our meal. We came back here after not being in a very long time. We just didn't think to come - it's not that we had issues with the food. A lot has changed. The menu is completely revamped. No more stock photos that SAY they are stock photos which is a HUGE plus. The menu is streamlined and side dishes are now easy to find and not hidden away. As for BBQ, it was decent but not the best in the area. I have an issue with mushy BBQ and while that wasn't the case with the ends - it was a bit the case with the ribs. We had burnt ends and a rack of ribs. I like the house sauces but they also serve Baby Ray's should you prefer that. The burnt ends were a mix of beef and pork - the pork was much better than the beef. The dry rub ribs looked great but were a little mushy. Sides were cole slaw, fries, onion rings, and creamed spinach. I thought the portions were generous. Neither of us finished the sides and while my companion ate all his ribs, I had enough ends left over for a hearty lunch the next day. We had AMAZING service. read more

Staying at nearby hotel I walked here for dinner. I ordered Kansas City ribs with two sides. First disappointment was salad was not an option as a side. I was not brought bread and had to ask. What I received was five stale rolls. The rolls were slightly warm which was probably a weak attempt to soften them. They would have been better off telling me they didn't have bread than to give me stale rolls. I chose French fries and broccoli as my sides. Both of these were only warm. Same thing with the ribs. The dinner came very quickly which made me wonder if the food was microwaved. The ribs were good. Not great but good. I was given a glass of water when I sat down and never was given a refill even though I finished my water while eating. I won't eat here again. read more

I was very disappointed with this place. I had the burned ends BBQ and it was aweful. My expectations were not very high to start and they werent met at all. We came to the restaurant on a Saturday night before we even received our meals there was particles of glass in our drinks mixed with ice. The owner Ira came over and was very rude when we showed him we didnt understand the rudness. He then came back and said someone must have broken a glass in the ice bin behind the bar did not even appologize said would you like another drink. At that point we left. Bland, no taste, no flavor. Homefries were tasteless, sausage was burnt and dry, blueberry pancakes were disgusting, waffles were soggy or dried out, bacon looked awful as did ham, potato pancakes looked awful, fresh fruit looked like it was not fresh nor healthy to digest, wound up eating 2 bagels with butter, could have stayed home for that. Sorry, but cannot recommend this place. We came, expecting to have some decent BBQ. I was so disappointed. Based on some of the recommendations, We tried the corn nuggets, wings, ribs, mashed potatoes and a salad. The nuggets have this weird consistency...niblets with a jelly kind of thing inside. The wings have no taste and the "spice" of the ribs is paprika...nothing else. And it's not seasoned in it, it's sprinkled on like black pepper...EVERYWHERE!! Even though we live in Westchester County in NY, We enjoy the Mason Jar as it is a half way point to meet friends from New Jersey. Up until we were there 3 weeks ago, I would have rated the restaurant fair. The food was average at best, the staff was uninspired and the facilities were outdated and dark. On our most recent visit after not being there for at least 6 months, they have done a 180 degree turn for the better. The place looks vibrant, the manger came around to check on our service, the waiter was friendly and helpful and the place just looked so much better. Yes, this is not haute cuisine but the food is very good and well prepared. They have good beer selection. I ordered the burnt ends platter which was great and my wife had the fried chicken which she raved about. If I would criticize anything, because they were busy and we had to park toward the back of the parking lot- we found it to be quite dark-not so much that I was worried abut being accosted but rather the lot was slippery and I had to proceed cautiously. The only reason I gave the Mason Jar a one star is because the waiter was nice and helpful. The hostess sat us in a tight space which barely gave us room to move our chairs to sit down. Actually, we saw the hostess try to seat several other people in the same area and they all asked to move for a more roomy table. Otherwise, the food has deteriorated. The food was substandard and quite expensive. We have been visiting this restaurant for over 20 years but we will not be returning. I ordered the half rack of baby back ribs which came burnt. The two side dishes, smashed potatoes and onion rings came cold. My husband ordered the filet mignon sandwich. You would need a magnifying glass to see the filet under all the arugula and horseradish. The manager came to the table and rather than offering my husband another dish, she defended the sandwich and then reluctantly took it off our bill. My husband didn't even take a bite of the sandwich. It too bad the restaurant has gone downhill. I heard they have new owners but all I can say is....bring back the old owners. read more

Went here with a group following a hike. It is a sprawling place with some interesting features, like the mason jars that they serve drinks in. The specialty of the house seems to be barbecue, and there was a solid beer selection too. The mixed barbeque for 4-6 people is a good choice and it comes with a few sides - the baked beans and coleslaw were good. They serve you an array of grilled meats on a wooden slab, which you can then dress with 2 varieties of house bbq sauce - a watery hot and tangy, or a punchless sweet regular. The chicken and steak were good, but pork ribs were a little dry. The servers were friendly and did well with our large group. We are in the area for work, so trying the restaurants out to find what our normal daily options are for dining. We seen online about Mason Jar and couldn't wait to try it out. First, I have to say, their brick fired pizza is very very good. Their burgers are pretty tasty too. My mother ordered deep fried chicken. It was dried out and so tough that she could not even chew it. We flagged down our waitress, who was the only great point about this trip, her name was Amy...I suggest asking for her personally to be your waitress! Anyway, she sent the manager to our table and this is where this whole experience went down hill QUICKLY! He had an attitude as soon as he came to the table. Put both hands on our table and leaned in asking "What is the problem". My mother proceeded to tell him about the chicken and his reply? "This isn't KFC"...REALLY? Was that supposed to be a good thing? Because we don't eat that slop either!! He said this is how their chicken always is...once again, this is a good thing? I suggest maybe taking lessons from KFC because at least their chicken is not dried out and hard. He was so very obnoxious and rude trying to argue with her about the chicken, so I finally spoke up and told him, "regardless of how you make it, its not to her liking". He literally grabbed up the plate and said, I'll take it off the bill and walked away. Now, let me tell you, their side dishes are $4.59 each!! YES, u read that right!! A side of french fries, or cole slaw is $4.59!! They are not huge sides either, very normal size. I wish I had taken pics!! So when we got the bill, her chicken dinner for $11.99 was taken off as said, however...he charged her single prices for the 2 sides that came with the meal, which she did not even eat one of them, it was still on the plate when he took it! So, she ended up paying $4.59 and $4.59 for 2 sides....so that means he only was charging $3.00 (the difference) for the 4 pieces of chicken?? I think not. This guy is a crook and has NO customer etiquette AT ALL!! Once we got back to our hotel...I was even more disturbed about this, so I called the restaurant and asked who the tall male manager was thats working tonight. The girl informed me he is one of the owners, named Ira. OWNER???!!! That makes this even worse!!! We will NOT go back, even tho we enjoyed the pizza. His attitude ruined the whole experience. We are here working with the pipeline, which brings in A LOT of money to an area when they are here, and will make sure to spread the word. He hurt himself a lot more than $3 in the end by being an AHOLE!! The 2 stars are for the pizza and waitress! read more

I grew up in Mahwah and frequented The Mason Jar quite a bit while I was a resident. On a recent trip to NJ to spend time with my niece, we stopped for dinner. At 12 she is a Pizza connoisseur and a very picky eater. The Pizza was outstanding. Thin crispy crust, perfect seasoning, piping hot. The service was excellent as well. My husband and I are on vacation and this place is right next to our hotel. After 19 hours in a car, we just wanted some decent food and a relaxing dinner. We got neither. The place is so loud you can't hear anything someone you're dining with is saying. We are a party of two and were sat at a table for four in the middle of the room despite there being multiple two-top tables available. Two of the chairs at the table were up against the backs of another party, so we had to sit side by side instead of across from each other. It took 5 minutes for our waitress to acknowledge us, and when my husband asked if we could move to a two top behind us, her reply was, "well are you gonna be quick?" She said they close that corner off at 8pm for the live band to begin setting up. Fine. We stayed at our table. She asked us what drinks we wanted. I ordered water, he ordered a Blue Moon. She then ran off without so much as another word to us. Didn't say OK I'll put that right in, would you like an appetizer...nothing. She came back with the drinks, and said "Are you ready?" We were not, and we asked for more time with the menu. When she came back 10 minutes later, I ordered off the seasonal menu and got the Sauerbraten special with red cabbage and potato cakes. My husband ordered a burger and fries. The food came out quickly and was brought to our table by another server. We did not see our server again for at least 15 minutes. When she came back and asked us how things were, I asked for a side of sour cream for my potato cakes, and she was very clearly annoyed by my request. She didn't say a word to acknowledge me, just stormed off to the kitchen. 5 minutes later I received my sour cream which she hurriedly put down on the table and rushed away without another word. When I cut into my potato pancake, a piece of the potato looked black. Upon further inspection of the potato pancake, it was very clear that they had been made with potatoes that had black spots in them and were rotting. I stopped eating immediately. When our server came back, we asked for the check and a manager and were told it was really busy and if we wanted to talk to a manager to come back tomorrow after lunch. We are from out of town and won't be here at that time, and we explained as much and she simply said sorry about that and ran off to get our check. When the check came back she had entered everything we ordered twice which doubled our bill to almost $80. She caught the mistake, but by this time our dinner was pretty ruined. We won't come back here again should we visit the area. A terrible dining experience with a server who couldn't be bothered to do her job. By the way, an hour after we asked about the two top near the band area, no band had begun to set up and we could have easily been moved to a more suitable table. Don't waste your money. read more

I had taken a break from the Mason Jar after a bad service experience, but decided to go back on a Thursday night with the family for bbq. Service hadn't changed. The young server was obviously flustered. Kept apologizing that they were busy. The restaurant was half full at the most. The Bavarian pretzel appetizer never came. Table was never bussed. We just kept putting the used plates on the empty table behind us. Drinks were only refilled when we could find another server or busboy and ask him to get the waiter. Waited an hour and 10 minutes for the entrees. All food that we ordered were excellent, but the service keeps declining. It's a shame. This is one of the places I bring guests from out of town. In mentioning this to friends, it appears that the service has earned quite a reputation of being poor. read more
