We have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the food but the last visit was the best. We have sever food allergies in our family. I called in advance and spoke with the GM. He was so helpful and accommodating. He even came to our table to bring our meals and assure us that the allergy meal was done safely. My daughter loved her meal! One of the better restaurants I've been to in the Bangor area. I've done the sweeter mess burger twice and both times it was amazing. They also have an excellent selection of craft beers. I've done their German pilsner and their hefeweizen and was very happy with both. Mason's is a really top-notch place. Everything from the construction of the building and outdoor patio, the interior design, and beer & food is phenomenal. The outdoor patio overlooks the river, across which is Darling's Waterfront Pavilion (that features some pretty great acts in the spring/summer months). Remember this is Brewer (essentially Bangor), Maine...not your "hippest" 'hood. They have at least 10 of their in-house beers on tap (each $6-$7 for a pour or a flight of four 5 oz. pours for $9) and 3-5 guest beers. I of course only tried Mason's beers and all of them were great. They specialize in and make very well German-style beers (think hefeweizen and witbier). What a nice variety they have too - they don't just have 10 different IPAs. The food menu is outstanding and creative. It also tastes good :) I think they can lower the prices a dollar or two on some items, but otherwise the prices are fair. They didn't seem to have a happy hour (which would be a nice feature), but do have food and drink (yes, they do have craft cocktails) specials. read more

The food was not what I asked for they put cheese in my salad when I'm low cholesterol and they completely covered my fries in salt. My dads burger was good but he did comment he they put WAY to much spice on the Brussel sprouts and almost put mu dads health at risk. Good beer, great location. Really nice view out to the river. Staff was very nice. The creative menu items were of the most interest to me, not something you see a lot of in the Brewer/Bangor area. Waited 17 minutes for a drink, bartender didn't even ask.. had to ask after 17 minutes for a drink. Had to ask servers and hostess for basic needs like napkins and water due to the fact she only paid attention to her friends. I have been there twice and both times it was a complete and total waste of my time. It took an hour and twenty minutes for the food to hit the table and on top of that the order was wrong and burnt. First visit shortly after grand opening. Great service and friendly waitresses. I had the pull pork sandwich that was large in size and very tasty. The fries are the best I have ever had and I usually do not eat many fries...I eat them all. The fries are crispy and coated with garlic. It is a must try when you stop. An interesting menu with interesting local food combinations. Prices were very reasonable. The 2 stars is based on the REALLY loud misic. Sitting on at the windows I could not converse with the person across from me without leaning way over the table. And the second reason is the chairs. Short seat cut into the mid back of the legs. The seat back is angled so far back that you can't sit, support your back and eat. These two reasons will keep me from going back. As a side note outside seating is limited to picnic tables, none with wheelchair accessibility. So if you have any back or leg issues outside seating is not for you. read more

Five starts because of our waitress, Julie, who made the entire lunch phenomenal. We sat outside and enjoyed not only the wonderful view, but the comfortable atmosphere of the dining area. There were a bunch of beers to try, and we were very please with the two we had, both IPAs. We were not expecting great food but were pleasantly surprised. Great quality, nice flavors, and generous portions. The fries were particularly delicious. We would have liked to have stayed longer, but had to cut our time at this great place short in order to make our flight. When you go, ask for Julie. She's the best. read more

A caveat to what will be a negative, albeit fair, review-there was a large party that occupied the center of the brewery. Now on to the experience, and I'll keep it brief. While there was a wait for a table, my friend and I found seating at the bar. It took 15 (or more) minutes for us to get our drinks. The bartender acknowledged the wait with an apology (this was not the first apology). Eventually-perhaps now 20 minutes in-we placed our food order. Well (WELL) after an hour waiting for our food and another not-convincing apology, and just as my friend and I discussed settling for our beers and hitting the exit, our food arrived. The burger was over cooked and disappointing. The potato salad, though, was great. The bartender again offered an apology and comped a round (i.e., one beer). I liked the vibe. The beer was good. The poor management of the place sadly eclipsed anything positive and defined the experience. I sincerely hope they get their act together and figure out the staffing needs I really appreciate that I was contacted by someone from Mason's who addressed and owned my concerns without being the least bit defensive. I sincerely appreciate that and would, indeed, give it another try. read more

Two words: "Filthy" "Fries". One of the area's newest breweries, Mason's gives an eclectic take on everything from burgers to pizza. While the menu has changed around a few times, there are some constants that you can count on. The burger is going to be juicy and the pizza is going to be topped with things you never thought you could put on a pie. But, it's always going to be good. And, Filthy Fries (fries with bacon, cilantro, garlic, cheese curds and beer cheese sauce). You HAVE to have the Filthy Fries. Beer selection is growing as well. I've enjoyed everything I've tried there. Hoping to get some music on the patio this coming summer. But, until then, the indoor seating is spacious with a nice atmosphere and bar area. We love Mason's and have really enjoyed it the couple of times we visited. Last night was no exception. We sat outside to enjoy some of the last nice weather of the year. We ordered and everything came out in a very timely manner but when my pizza came out, I noticed I forgot to order it without red peppers. The manager walked by and noticed me picking them all off and asked if everything was okay and I explained that it was my error and this pregnant girl couldn't handle red peppers. He offered to take it out back in the light to get them out and I said no it was okay and he said no no I'll just go have them make you a new one, I was so appreciate and said he really didn't have to, I felt bad and he told me no need to feel bad, I'm pregnant, I should have what I wanted. First time there today. Great place. Excellent staff. Very family friendly. Food was outstanding. Pretzel app was hands down the best soft pretzel we've ever had. Salt and vinegar fries were great. I had the cheesesteak and it was sooooo good, it will be a challenge for me to order anything different in the future. My wife had a salad with ahi tuna on top and she absolutely loved it. The food here was delicious and had a homemade quality to it. I ordered fresh cut fries and a BLT. It tasted fantastic! My fries looked hand cut and the BLT was on a homemade roll. I went on a Wednesday and it was pretty busy but I think there was an event going on. Nonetheless, the service was really fast and the staff was super friendly. It sits right next to the Penobscot river and it has a beautiful view of the riverside. Would definitely recommend to anybody looking to dine in a great atmosphere. read more

My step-daughter/son-in-law took us there. We sat outside along the river. It was nice but a little cold/breezy. I had the Farm Burger (nice taste but a little messy to eat), cheesy dirty fries (cold with unappealing cheese curds.) It is served on wax paper on a round metal tray. Unfortunately, if you want to eat your burger with a knife and a fork, you'll end up eating wax paper (I certain did). I'd prefer a plate/platter. I had the dark IPA. It was nice. Wife had a BYO chicken sandwich. It was too spicy but good other than that. We started with the Artichoke mini-bites. We were not impressed. They have a nice bar inside, but the flow was strange. I kept bumping into servers and other wait staff just to get outside. They didn't have a "basic" burger on the menu (perhaps they would make one, I don't know). read more

We returned for another round today, and we were glad we did. From the initial greeting to our table, service was freindly and our server was attentive and top notch. Fried tofu was great and the "winter salad" was fresh and well constructed. The "tripper and morty" pizza was awesome (I did get it without the fake meatballs and added roasted garlic) As for beverages we tried a flight and ended up getting a couple pours of the coffee stout (love a good stout) After this experience we'll definitely come back again. read more

Food: 5 Price: 4 Service: 1 Experience: -1 If I were only rating the food or most of the atmosphere, this would be a 5-star review. However, massive amounts of disorganization and bad service bring down any good things to say about Mason's. The food is amazing, some of the best I have had in Maine. The appetizers are creative and delicious, and the entrees are out of this world (pizzas and burgers especially). The view along the river is picturesque and relaxing, and the inside of the establishment is put together nicely (if a bit loud with the high ceilings and cement floors). That's the good. The bad: the (four!) hostesses at the entrance told us we had to wait 30 minutes to sit outside. This was a Saturday afternoon after lunch and well before dinner and the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full inside, and had 10+ tables open outside. To add insult to injury, we were seated (party of 3) at a table right next to the door outside and adjacent to the kitchen when there were many better seats available in a restaurant that was mostly empty (even more injury were the tables sat immediately outside after we were told there was a long wait). The server, although nice, seemed frazzled and had very little knowledge about the beers on tap. Service was slow (again in a restaurant that was not busy), and disjointed; we waited 20 minutes for our check after we were clearly finished eating. All of this is a shame for a place that should be knocking it out of the park with their stellar food and location. I seriously doubt we will go back. read more

Today I went for brunch with a friend who is in town. She had her dog with her so we wanted somewhere dog-friendly. In that regard, Mason's didn't disappoint! They immediately brought our pups water and treats made with spent grain from their brewing process. Plus on Sundays they donate a portion of each bill to the local emergency vet! We shared the Filthy Fries, which were easily our favorite part of the meal. I had the Crab & Mac Benedict and my friend had the Pizza Roll. Both were tasty! I also enjoyed the Son of a Son of a Saison. Juicy Fruit gum is added during brewing which gives it a unique twist. The only reason I didn't rate Mason's five stars was because the service slowed down considerably as it got busy. When we arrived so we were seated immediately and served quickly. As things picked up our waitress got so overwhelmed with other tables it seemed like she forgot about us. Other patrons that were seated as we were eating had not only been served, but were brought their checks. We weren't in a hurry, but it was a bit awkward. We were eventually able to flag down the waitress and ask for the check, which then came in a timely manner. All in all I will go back, but may try to go when it's slower. read more

They do serve a decent brunch during Sunday especially the different types of Eggs Benedict. Great atmosphere with a wide view of the river. Made a reservation through their website last Wednesday, showed up a little early and had to wait a few minutes for our table to be ready, no big deal. Once we were seated, water was promptly provided and we made our drink and app orders. I had the Project #1, a saison (one of my favorite types), and the wife had a cherry hard cider from a cider house in NY, both were delicious. We paired them with the Brew Haus Frites, which were really, really good. I ordered The Butcher burger, medium rare, and the wife had the D-Money, both with side salads. The green goddess dressing, which appeared to be made in house, was really good. The consistency leaned more towards a sour cream than a dressing, but I really liked it. The burger was hands down the best I have ever had. Just the right amount of toppings so it wasn't a mess, and the bun was toasted perfectly. The wife also enjoyed her sandwich.
