Meh. Nice place but the food is just ok. The servers seemed overwhelmed. Prices are a little high.

I was really hesitant to try this place again because my first time was disappointing, so decided to just go for apps and dessert. However I was so pleasantly surprised this time. It was a pretty busy Saturday evening but we were sat and brought waters immediately. The server, Julietta came and greeted us within a few minutes and was super friendly. I was with my 4 year old daughter and have found that taking her to dinner downtown is always hit or miss- servers either think she's adorable, or they're visibly annoyed to be serving a two top with a child. Julietta was awesome and took extra time to engage with my daughter and made sure she had a great experience. The food came out fast (just a kid's pizza and a bruschetta app) and was great. Julietta continued to be attentive throughout the meal and I never waited more than a few minutes for anything we asked for- extra napkins, boxes, the bill etc. I will agree with other reviews though, it's really loud inside. The minute we walked in, my daughter covered her ears and tried to turn around and walk back out. But overall a great meal and, especially, really great service from Julietta. read more

My parents and I went here for the first time last night and we really liked it. The drinks and taco's were really good. Everything was plated nicely and the server's were very nice. We liked the industrial hip look to the inside. Very open with a nice bar. read more

Very disappointed in this restaurant: food quality is poor (chewy, welted, bland) ,miss communication from "is it the bar (seat yourself or wait to be seated) ....know one seemed to know to ordering a salad only to get what looks like it was just pulled from the garden Manager and wait staff argued several times that everyone else this evening loved it...not professional !!!( don't take it so personal...wow) What ever happened to making the consumer happy ?? First time here @ Masonry Grill and went with a group of 8 friends to celebrate our dear friend Lori's birthday and it was great! They had us set up at a large table outside so we were comfortable and felt safe and socially distanced. We had a lot of good options for both beverages and food so everyone was happy but the best part of the experience was the service we received from Malcolm. He effortlessly handled all of our questions, orders and special requests and was personable and attentive throughout the meal. He offered Lori her choice of desserts as a birthday treat and then took the special cake that had been purchased elsewhere into the kitchen to have it sliced and plated for the rest of us. Thank you Malcolm you helped make the evening extra special for Lori and the rest of us! read more

I am not one to write reviews. I'm actually a champion of anything new in Salem and feel that I am patient, because for whatever reason, restaurants don't live long here. That being said, this was a disappointment on a couple of levels. Went for birthday celebration with a party of 9. Each patron got something different and each patron, except the one that ordered the pretzel and cheese, was unhappy. The burger was red. The chicken in the fettuccini was obviously prefrozen and gray. The trio of cakes was not edible. The portobello sandwich was bland on a greasy bun. The Thai noodle salad was greasy noodles, prefrozen chicken on bagged lettuce. It is so sad that the way to a patrons heart is fresh ingredients just cooked well. That's it. The manager came to the table and with a smile told us that it was strange that not one complaint had been made that night and all the complaints happened at one table. We were so gracious and nice about the situation prior to that comment. I want more than anything to go to a restaurant, even pay higher prices for delicious food that I could never recreate in my own kitchen. But, with the open kitchen concept, we all saw the frozen food bags being opened. Maybe don't have the kitchen open when taking short cuts. Wish I could say I'd give it another try, but when treated that way by the manager and not even open to hearing feedback... no thanks. Breaks my foodie heart. The server was great. Decor is awesome. I don't usually write reviews but I want to be honest. I came here for an appetizer and drinks tonight on a Friday night with my girlfriend to pass time before a movie. We got there at 8:30pm and got seated and got our appetizers and two drinks. Appetizers are ehh. But the drinks were really great. I was trying to get another drink close to 9 but I was denied another drink without any notice or last call before the bar was closed. And the restaurant closes at 10 it even says on the door and they turned away people that were coming in at 9. Really disappointed. I would've at least thought since I'm already sitting down that at least I would be open for another drink with 1 hour till closing but guess not. So if you definitely want a good time before make sure to come before 8pm or leave by 8:30pm. Don't get why people inside get denied service if already sitting down with an hour till closing and no notice of closure. read more

First time coming in, and was not impressed with the service. Only positive was the social distancing of the outdoor seating. Originally sat in uncovered area, which chances for rain were possible. After a couple of rain droplets, we asked to be moved. Server says we can move, but does not offers assistance to move, no big deal, but maybe offer? We move to a covered area and our server brings us our drinks and takes our order for food. We ordered the nacho appetizer, personally wasn't feeling any of the menu items at that time. We each got a margarita sampler, which I didn't like. I know this review is coming off as me not liking anything, but the alcohol just tasted awful. Hard to explain the taste, and I prefer margarita on the rocks, but this, just tasted bad. My companion drank my sampler. Ordered the masonry punch, it was alright, more drinkable than the margaritas, but wouldn't label it the best. After waiting what seemed rather significantly, server reproaches us and says... sorry a million times, but they have lost our ticket for the nachos order... by this time, the margarita samples was finished, and this is while sipping on them during conversation. We finally receive our nachos and we continued to eat and drink. By this time it started to pick up, the seating by the street started to fill with patrons. Server comes and asks us if we were ready for our check, in which, my companion says yes. Server says they will be right back. Server did not come back and 40 minutes of waiting, it was obvious they forgot. We could see them serving drinks to a group and taking orders. We finally flagged a different server, the one from the beginning and they cashed us out. They apologized and said it was a busy time. No, it was not a busy time, we had asked for the ticket before the server got the group seated, and before they decided to serve drinks and take orders. Very dissatisfied with the service. Maybe the server was forgetful or is unable to multitask, who knows, but come on. read more

After driving past this new dining spot in Salem a few times, my friend and I decided to try them for lunch. Big mistake. Her Caesar salad was disaster, who in the world grills, yes grills lettuce? She had two Spears of blackened soggy lettuce on her plate with toppings dropped on top. When she asked the waiter to please bring her a bowl of chopped lettuce, the "chef" refused. Seems he is very proud of his Caesar salad and offered her a steak knife to cut it with. My salad had lettuce that had been chopped a day or two earlier, brown edges. They are very unclear what items on the menu, such as salad dressing are gluten free. The stock answer was, I should be....well I'll let you know if I get sick! We had planned on making some phone calls during our lunch but the noise in the room in unbelievable. Their happy hour is 3-5:00 but we won't be chancing this place again. We ate here with friends last Friday. After reading some of the comments I wasn't even expecting much, BUT it was great!! Good service, excellent food, big portions. We shared the Yakisobo noodle salad, Shrimp Tacos, and Shrimp Risotto. So many good things on the menu we will be going back to try them all. Definitely will share the meals,the portions are so big. My only complaint was the noise level, but it wasn't as bad as Acme coffee house. Looks like they have a great area to eat outside looking forward to warm weather to try it out read more

For some reason the appetizer we ordered didn't go through on their electronic ordering system, so when they eventually brought it, they automatically comped it. For a new restaurant to be opened three months you would think management and the owner would be much more attentive to the reviews left on Yelp. It's status remains "Unclaimed" for what reason???? Not one posted review on Yelp has been reviewed, commented, or acknowledged by management. I was looking for a restaurant to celebrate a birthday but this one will probably not be on my list they don't even post their own menu on Yelp. Only three stars in three months doesn't look promising. If management took their digital presence more seriously and actually acted on some of these comments that have been left, you would think they would be at least four stars. read more

We went last night for a late Valentine's Day dinner. I kept thinking that maybe something was going on and they took too many reservations or something to make everyone stressed out and i completely understand because I work in the food industry but still, this was a little too much bad experiences for our first time going there. We had a reservation and our waiter seemed incredibly annoyed that we were there. They do have outdoor seating but the tables are super close to eachother and they kept adding more tables to the area while we had our dinner. We had the nachos to start and those were very delicious. Then we had shrimp tacos and the Cluck chicken sandwich. We couldn't even finish half our sandwhich and tacos. The shrimp was breaded but soggy almost and just tasted off, almost like it was old. And the chicken in the sandwich was dry and burnt almost. Exactly three stars. The food was fine, but not exceptional. I expected more from the menu, but this felt like a hip Applebee's. There are better places to get basic American fare in Salem. I had planned this outing for 10 in November so I was concerned after reading other Yelp posts. On a wet Wednesday night, they were only a third full so noise was not an issue, Service was excellent and attentive. Burgers are jawbreaking with 4 or 5 different fries available. The steak added to a salad got raves. The bread pudding was declared the best she ever had. The lasagna was unique and good. All 10 of us took home leftover boxes. I will go again but avoid prime time. They have a happy hour and I'm dying to try their multi-friend soft pretzel. read more

I am always excited to try new restaurants in town. This, unfortunately, was a bit of a disappointment. They have a great atmosphere, but the service was bad (she tried to take my plate even when I still had food and a fork in my mouth), and the menu and food were boring and bland. The one redeeming quality was my old fashion was SPOT on. I may go here for drinks again, but if I'm thinking of eating I can find a more enticing menu. read more

Food was ok to pretty good. Not sure I'd classify it as upscale pub grub necessarily as others have said, but kinda I guess. BBQ burger, cappelini pomodoro and seared steak salad pretty good and the service seems to have improved. Biggest complaint is that it's like eating in a bowling alley albeit bowling alley's are darker and quieter, all those hard surfaces they've inherited or created. Let's say, no problem reading the menu from the bright lighting. Man, it was hard to hear any conversation at our table of four. And, during the winter, don't sit near the bar lest you get a wave of cold air every time the side door is opened, which is often in the evening since there is a parking lot immediately outside. Since they're not using the outside eating area during the winter, they should just lock that door from the parking lot until warmer weather prevails. Nice bar area, lots of windows reminding me of the Brick Broiler days, without the easy watching of passersby. Drinks: we just had whisky on ice and some taps, white wind so nothing special ordered that way. read more

We tried Masonry Grill for the first time last night. The atmosphere was nice, warm and casual . Our group had the Shrimp risotto, rib dinner, chicken fettuccine, calamari and side salads. The food was prepared perfectly. The shrimp on the risotto were amazing... We went to the Masonry Grill to celebrate our nephew's birthday with a large group of people. We had a private room and one waiter to ourselves. The service was mediocre, we asked for beverages multiple times and he forgot them the first time and came back with only one the second time (we shared). I ordered the grilled Caesar salad with chicken on it, one of my favorite things to order when it's available at a restaurant. When our food arrived, I had a bowl of lettuce with Parmesan cheese (the powdered kind like you would find at a pizza place) and chicken. When brought to the waiters attention (I did not want to wait for a new meal to be made due to time constraints) his comment was, "Yeah, I wondered about that when it came out. In my opinion, the salad you got is better anyway." I could have made this bowl of lettuce at home for less than $2. Additionally, the salad brought to me was not even on the menu (I went back and checked)!!!! When our check arrived I asked the waiter if I was going to be charged the $14 for the salad that I didn't receive. He tried to tell me the salad on my bill was actually cheaper than the grilled salad I had ordered. I told him, in fact, the cost on my receipt was the same as the grilled Caesar salad price (the salad I received was not on menu at all). Upon checking in his hand-held device, he comes back with, "both salads are the same cost." HA!! I feel at the least there should have been a cost adjustment... one for the quality, two for the inconvenience. Due to our large group, there was an automatic 20% gratuity, so on the bill for my husband, my niece, and me, he made off with a $20 tip. We will NOT return to this restaurant with service and customer service that was this bad and for a slightly higher than average price. Find a different place to go. You'll be much happier. We were here from out of town for the holidays and birthdays, we go out to eat often, we eat at a lot of upscale "foodie" restaurants, and this dining experience was terrible except for the time spent with our family. read more
