The drink machine was out of order but we were able to have canned drinks instead. The food was mediocre and nothing to write home about. I've had lobster in every state in New England and North Carolina (see my review of the Lobstah Shack in Topsail) and I've cooked many at home myself. I feel like I know a thing or two about this delectable crustacean. First, I'll start with your competitor. Your lobster roll is by far and away better. Point! Next, let's talk about the taste of the roll...deliciously seasoned sautéed in a perfect amount of hot butter - the Connecticut Roll. Yum!!!! Tender and sweet and not overpowered or overshadowed by the butter. The bun was warm and squishy -- perfect. Now let's talk about the "size/amount" for your money. It was decent, even above average I'd say. But here's the issue -- I got two "Bar Harbor" rolls (Connecticut-style), which is advertised as in including a lobster tail (whole) on top of the roll. I was excited about that. Neither of my rolls came with the tail on top. That was super disappointing :(. It's an upcharge so I felt a little duped but, again, still a healthy amount of lobster meat in the rolls. I couldn't make mention of it because I ordered it for delivery so I couldn't exactly go to the counter to ask about the tails. I also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. After reading many reviews, I was skeptical but it was pretty delicious. Flavorful and a good balance of clams and potatoes. I'm 65/35 on whether I'd go back again. Tomorrow is my birthday! I wanted to treat myself with an authentic lobster roll. My friend and I ate here over 7 months ago. My lobster roll was much smaller and the amount of lobster was smaller compared to our last visit. The price was greater than the other prices we paid. Her potato salad had no flavor compared to her last offering. When I spoke with the only employee and the only other person in the restaurant, he was defensive and said my Udi's gluten free roll is smaller due to its being gluten free. He admitted that lobster prices have increased. He didn't seem to be overly concerned with our dining experience. We are not returning to Mason's Famous Lobster. I'm hoping that they will be more interested in their other guests than they were in the two of us. Their service and their costs are possible reasons that we were there by ourselves. Sadly it closed down so I decided to take a drive down to Cary and see what it's about. To say I was beyond pleased is an understatement. It's a completely different vibe than Raleigh, being only one person working and the restaurant not looking very busy. I was told about the $5 up charge as soon as I was greeted at register and had no issue with it knowing it's a family owned business trying to make it by. I went here to get some lobster and shrimp rolls for my Mom's birthday. Everything was very tasty but pricey, after all it's lobster. We had clam chowder and cole slaw too. The employees were friendly enough but didn't really engage a lot. I'm pretty sure it's a corporate chain, so it has that feel, definitely different than a local place. I was so excited to see that Mason's had opened and was fairly close by. With the wife out of town, I figured tonight is the night for a lobster roll. Hell yeah! Juicy, buttery, mouth watering lobster roll is exactly what I was looking for, just like the pictures that were posted just after they opened. So, here's where it went south.... Not like the beautiful opening week pictures with lobster over flowing from the nice fluffy bun, my roll was the size of you average hot dog bun (not a big Costco-sized monster of a dog, think ballpark size) Unfortunately the amount of filling in the bun was disappointing and it seemed to disappear in only a few bites leaving just some bun left. While it was tasty and seasoned well, it left me feeling like the $20+ I spent for this was not a good value for the money. Here's the pic of my roll.... I liked both rolls but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the classic. The food and service were really good but the rolls are $21 each and that is expensive. I stopped in for the first time with my college-aged daughter for lunch. We got both a classic and a Connecticut roll and a cup of lobster bisque so we could both try a variety of things. Both rolls were very tasty and had a decent amount of lobster in them. It was good to try both side-by-side. The cup of lobster bisque did not contain even the smallest actual piece of lobster, so was it was a disappointment. This was only my 3rd visit to this location and I'm sad to say it may be the last. I went in the evening and like my last visit was the only customer in the store. Half the tables were covered in crumbs which is a yellow flag for me and my same experience as previous visits. However, this time the counter where one orders also appeared dirty. I walked in to see an employees at a table on his computer. He didn't look up the entire time I was walking to the counter. I turned to face it and seeing no one else I turned around to the table where the employee was sitting. He finally looked up at me and went thru the kitchen to the counter and finally acknowledged he had a customer. I ordered a Maine lobster roll and can of coke. Even though on the menu the sandwich is listed as $23 there is a sign on the counter stating there will be a $5 up charge so my total was $32. I took my food outside to eat and I was disappointed. The first bite was dry with only lobster. For the second bite there was a huge glob of mayo. As the only customer you can't take time to assemble my sandwich properly? I'm a small business owns and love to support others but I don't think I can justify a return. read more

This place could go head to head with a New England restaurant as far as I am concerned. Honestly this roll was better than some I have I Mass. The staff were super nice and the restaurant was clean. The place does not offer a huge variety of options, so I highly suggest looking at the menu ahead of time. I went went the classic Connecticut Lobster Roll, regrettably I was in a rich and forgot they had soup. I'm sure everything on the menus is just as good as the roll I had. The meat tasted fresh and had big clumps of meat. They toasted the bread at the time of the order so it was hot and fresh. I love that they used the top slit New England style rolls; I hate when they put lobster on regular hot dog buns that get all mushy. The reason I didn't give this place a 5 star is because it is on the pricy side. One roll was almost $19 and came with no sides. I realize up north that's about the average cost for 1 roll, but down south we like to get more for our money. I had never eaten at Mason's before but happened to be in the shopping center and decided to give it a try. It was delicious and rivaled any lobster roll from New England (and I have grown up there eating lots of them!). The lobster was perfectly cooked, the bun was perfectly buttery and grilled, and the preparation was simple and perfect. I have been known to eat at Cousins if I happen to be near their truck, but I will save my money to spend at Mason's now. The rolls are at least 30% larger, the price is $2 cheaper, and I think the lobster tastes better. I got the hot Connecticut Roll and the chowder. For the money I wish the portions were bigger. I appreciate the oyster crackers for the soup - wish the clams were more tender, less rubbery, and the soup a little thicker. I understand the uncut claw meat is a bit of a presentation brag but I'd prefer it cut up into edible chunks and mixed with more tail meat. Ordered the bar harbor (upsized) roll 2 ways (classic cold with mayo and Conneticut style warmed with lemon/butter) and the lobster bisque to share with another person. I never thought I would have said this, but there was almost too much lobster. If I had to do it again, I probably would have ordered the regular sized roll. Between the 2 styles, I preferred the classic style as the Conneticut style tasted a bit bland (did not really taste the butter/lemon). Lobster on both were a bit chewier and under-salted than I would have liked. The classic had really light mayo on the lobster pieces, and a big slathering of mayo on top of the bread. I wasn't a huge fan of the mayo on the bread, and would skip that next time. The bisque was good, had good lobster flavor but not much actual chunks of lobster (can add lobster for small upcharge). I basically used it as a dipping sauce for my lobster roll. Price wise it was about what I was expecting (pretty pricey), but that's normal for lobster. read more

The staff was very friendly. I have had lobster rolls in Maine and here in Apex, NC (restaurant moved to Holly Springs several years ago). All of my prior lobster rolls had similar seasoning. We had the Connecticut rolls which are warmed lobster (claws). The lobster meat is a little fishy (needs a squeeze or two of lemon juice) and are not as fresh as the ones you actually eat when you're in Maine. But they're as close as you can get if you miss those. And, oh, they have gluten-free buns. read more
