I'm giving this location 3 stars. I had a 60 minute, full body massage last week. The girl at the front desk was very friendly and she made me feel welcomed. She offered me a hot, lavender scented satchel for my shoulders, which I accepted. After that I was asked to fill out some paperwork and then was moved to a relaxation room. All of this was great! Then the massage therapist retrieved me ..... She walked me to a room in the back. Asked me what time I arrived (which was 20 min early and the massage started 10 minutes late). She then inquired if I was asked questions by the staff in the front, to which I answered no. The masseuse then proceeded to tell me that I should have been asked questions and the staff was not doing their job. After that was a long sigh and I was rushed through a series of questions, told to remove my clothes down to my "comfort level" and she left. The 60 minute massage lasted a grand total of 45 min. After, I was escorted to the front and left to pay. I likely will not be returning to this location as my massage was shorter than what I paid for and the massage therapist was less then friendly. read more

This particular Massage Envy needs a serious overhaul. Customer service at the front desk is horrible. The woman I dealt with was named Carla. She needs to go, rude, unprofessional and clueless. They do not return phone calls, even after they initiated the cancelation. When questioned why they never returned my phone, I was to told that it wasn't her problem. When I asked to speak with the manager, I was told she wouldn't be there for a week. This was the fourth time in 8 months that my appointment was cancelled, never an apology, never an explanation, never a suggestion for another massage therapist. Next available appointment that wasn't at noon was a month away. However, in spite of cancellations and lack of good customer service, they are VERY good at charging me every month, right on time. I decided to write a letter to the location manager and the owner of the Arlington, MA franchise. I address both envelopes by name. I have never heard back. (that was 3 months ago) Here are some of the low-lights of my experience: -unbelievably unprofessional phone answerer -super loud talker at the front desk...not a big deal were she not discussing with me out loud in front of other folks my personal health history as it was requested on the forms that were required -my therapist left the room after introducing herself...the standard, get changed, get on table face up, I'll be back in 3 mins....she returned NOT KIDDING more than 15 mins later. -AND SHE REEKED of cigarettes -20 mins into the massage she burped. Isn't this enough? I believe that the therapist I had really wanted me to have a good experience. It's just that she was INexperienced. I don't know who is overseeing this place but man, what a disappointing experience. I don't care how much of a 'deal' this place is. I rarely update my reviews to take away stars but unfortunately I felt it was necessary. After my introductory massage, I decided to get a six-month membership to try it out. When I checked my bank statement online, I saw a pending payment to massage envy was going to make my account overdraft. So I drove over massage envy to make a payment in cash instead of having my card billed. Unfortunately there was miscommunication between the manager and myself because the payment had already gone through. The result was that I got hit with over $70 in overdraft fees. When I called Massage Envy to see what it happened, I ended up having a heated and ultimately useless conversation with the manager. His stance was that he had explained every thing to me when I came in to make the payment. To me his idea of explaining seemed to be lacking, since I clearly had not realized that the payment had already gone through and that I was paying for the next month. The bottom line is that good customer service is measured by how you're treated when there is a problem. I will not be renewing my membership. I was considering it but after my experience with the manager, I would rather take my money elsewhere. read more

DON'T SIGN UP FOR THE MEMBERSHIP! The membership offer is 100% absolutely misleading and it will cost you over $700 for the year regardless of how many times you go! We visited this location at the end of 2011 on the recommendation of a friend. The massage staff are very competent and hardworking. The desk staff lure you into their "membership" program which is supposed to get you decreased rates. Unknown and unexplained to us at the time was this program auto-charges every month which would be fine if we actually returned monthly. About 6 months in I decided it wasn't worth it and tried to cancel my membership at which point I was told if I cancelled I'd still be charged for the total 12 massages. I was completely mislead by the staff in the membership details and will not frequent this business at any of its locations again. read more

The first time I went to Massage Envy I had the coupon for a $39 introductory massage. This is a great price for an hour massage so I figured, why not. I had made an appointment and was able to get in the next day because they have so many therapists on staff. When I got there they asked me if I wanted a neck warmer and I declined and they led me to a dim lit room with comfy chairs to sit and rest until I was called in. My therapist , Elaine, came to get me and led me to the room, then asked me how I was feeling, what I would like done, and what kind of massage I liked. She left the room so I could undress and was back in a few minutes to start. She was great with her hands and kept asking me throughout the hour if the pressure was okay. At the end I was incredibly relaxed and felt great. When I was dressed I opened the door and was greeted with a small cup of water and a warm, wet facecloth. I thanked her and proceeded to check out. Upon checkout, I sat down and the receptionist came over and sat with me. She explained the membership to me. $60 monthly that includes a 1 HOUR massage. Any massages on top of that are $39. So if you want to go bi-monthly it will be $50 and hour which is a great price in the area. I signed up and have been going since. You also receive 3 passes to give out to friends for $39 1hr massage. Since the first visit I have gone back twice. I have not seen Elaine because our schedules were conflicting, but I did see a couple of others. One was great, and the other I came out feeling more stressed and un-relaxed than when I went in. He was very rough and did not care at all what kind of pressure my body could take. When someone winces. . ease up! And he barely used any oil so he was pressing very hard and rubbing my dry skin. I said after that I felt like I had gotten a sunburn. . . (statement we used as kids when someone would grab your arm and squeeze and twist in both directions until it burned) SO that being said. It COMPLETELY depends on the Therapist you get. I honestly would suggest going with Elaine or Brian if you get the opportunity. They were both wonderful and very aware of your issues and concerns. I scheduled a massage for my sister and I. They assured us that we could have one deep tissue massage and one regular massage. When we arrived they sat us down and started the show, asking where our discomfort was and what we wanted from the massage. Then they had us sit in the "relaxation room". They told us a man would be out to give me a deep tissue and woman would give my sister her massage. A few minutes later a woman came to fetch me (not a man as they promised). I told her I wanted her to go as deep as she could. Then she told me she could not give a deep tissue massage. I told her that was not acceptable and walked out. The front desk girl told me that she was sorry for the mix up. The therapist was supposed to give deep tissues, but apparently decided not to give them during my appointment. The front desk blamed the therapist. That's funny, they told me multiple times that a man was supposed to give me my massage. Good old bate and switch. The front desk girl told me she was not the manager, but she could give me half off and I agreed to get the massage. The massage was fine. Nothing too impressive and definitely not what I wanted. On the way out I made it clear I had no interest in singing up, but the front desk girls made sure to give me attitude. They reminded me multiple times that the therapist was signed up to give deep tissues, but the therapist must have changed her mind. Sounds more like they had a last minute switch and were hoping I would not notice. Oh! and as I was walking out, they referred to the front desk girls as managers... hmm, just an hour ago they told me they weren't managers. Congrats on your raise!! This place plays games. I've been really happy with my Massage Envy membership in general, but went to the Arlington location a couple of times, and won't be back. The first time was very average, but the second time was horrible, very rough, and left me black and blue with bruises. I tried to give feedback during the massage, but no luck. So I was pleased when I got the survey the next day asking me about my experience. I gave full and constructive details, and when prompted requested that the manager call me to discuss the situation. I have been a member of Massage Envy since March 2008. I have cycled through many massage therapists, as there is a high turnover rate (deduct 1 star) but nonetheless I have always managed to find someone I enjoy. There are a lot of bad reviews on here, but as a member, I am treated much differently than what the reviews on here say. A lot of the desk staff recognizes me when I come in, which is about 1x a month. I can usually get a day-of appointment, although not with my preferred therapist, as she books out weeks in advance (I LOVE YOU ALEXIS!) The neck warmers are relaxing and the receptionists usher you into a special waiting area, unlike some other Massage Envy locations, where you have to wait up front and listen to the mindless gossip and complaining of the desk staff (i.e. Burlington location). For someone who plans to get a massage at least once a month, this deal cannot be beat. read more

I have not received a massage from this location because scheduling was a met with attitude from the receptionist. When I asked her a question she laughed at me and kind of offended me. It was really weird. I was calling for a massage to de-stress, not become even more stressed! Jeeze. I originally came for some stress relief, and was amazed at how much pain relief the massage I got provided as well. Due to several big life changes, my stress level has been through the roof, and I'd been popping up to eight Advils a day to deal with how much my shoulders and neck hurt because of it. I expected the massage to relieve some of the tension and anxiety, and I booked the appointment mainly for the stress relief and relaxation. But - holy cow. After talking with the front desk associate and then the massage therapist I was paired with, I got a massage that relieved more pain than Advil ever could! By the time I got up off the table, I felt no pain. None. It was amazing. Drug-free pain relief...who knew? The membership is a no-brainer and a great deal. I have been a member of Massage Envy for 3+ years now, and for 2+ of them Arlington has been my "local". First, for those who don't know or understand, this is a membership-based service. No, it's not as cushy as a spa, but the prices are not sky-high either. The idea here is to provide people access to affordable, regular massage. If you're the kind of person who needs robes and cucumber water, this ain't your place. But if you would like to incorporate regular affordable massage in to your life, check them out. In reference to those who say they have new therapists, right out of school...I'm sure they do. Asking a few questions of the desk staff will help you find the right match. My therapist is absolutely phenomenal. Truly amazing. Her name is Hannah and if you take my regular appointment with her I'll kick your arse. Have also seen Eric and he is also remarkable. Both have helped me tremendously after a particularly painful injury and a long recovery process. Yes, I have had a less experienced therapist there, but the staff was up-front with me about it. He did a great job despite being a little nervous and was fine in a pinch. Lastly, I'd like to recognize the management there for being super responsive about a scheduling problem I had a few months ago that resulted in a missed appt and a resulting charge on my card. Not only did they call me immediately in response to my letter, but they reversed the charges that day AND gave me a free 30-minute upgrade. Talk about STELLAR customer service. The front desk girls are awful. Amber and Vanessa are two of the WORST most rudest people I have ever had to deal with in my life. I have had many issues with booking and my appt being cancelled or moved and I ALWAYS had to deal with these two for some reason. There is always a snarky remark made as I'm walking out of the door (HELLO I CAN STILL HEAR YOU). Amber made a racist comment about me and mimicked my accent as I was walking back to the bathroom. Vanessa rolls her eyes whenever I walk in the door and seems as though I am being a nuisance. She always looks disheveled or like she's on something. This is really poor treatment of people who are PAYING for services. The Manager never gets back to me either. I have made multiple attempts at speaking with her. I've even heard her say "tell her I'm not here and pretend you'll take a message, I'm not dealing with this shit today". The front desk girl forgot to put me on hold. I hear this EVERY TIME. After checking in they provide warm neck pillows and direct you to a cozy, dimly lit seating area where you can wait if you're early. Business side: They lure you in with the first cheap one, then it's a membership deal, then it's pay-by-month. If you get the membership it's actually a fantastic deal for massages so if you need to get them medically (which I do) I don't see a problem. I have not had a problem with the front desk staff here. They know me pretty well. I've been going for about a year and a half now. I have not had anyone ask me to pre-tip - and if they did I would know immediately that they were new and were in the wrong. I have not had a masseuse subbed in for me, ever - with or without notice. I have had one massage that was A) Terrible and B) Shorter than what I paid for. So I was only charged less than half price. Seems fair. MASSEUSES: The masseuses run the gamut. Like any massage spa you have to find someone who fits your style. The front desk keeps a chart that shows who does deep tissue, who does craniosacral, who does swedish, who does this or that...so if they're new, they'll look at the chart to find someone for you. The front desk people who have been there longer can give you personal recommendations (because they get massages there themselves) as well as use The Chart, too. I've had bad massages but I have had fantastic ones, too. I have 3 people at this ME location that I will go to: Lisa W (F), Tamika (F), and Jarim (M). I typically like deep pressure, I like a masseuse to know exactly what muscle they are working on, what it's connected to, and how to work with it and the muscles around it to get it to relax. I like an experienced massage therapist that isn't awkward, that knows their moves, and that knows their flow but can adjust it accordingly. These three are my absolute favorite. I mean it - I won't see anyone else because I don't need to look around anymore. If you like what I like, I can't recommend these three highly enough! I'd give those three masseuses 5 stars each. I'm not sure how this location got such a bad rap. Personally, I have been to three other locations (Dedham, Newton and Brookline) and have found them all to be about the same. There are no bells and whistles BUT the place is clean, the music relaxing and the staff very friendly. This location in particular, I saw in comments that the staff wasn't friendly. I had a totally opposite experience. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door by a VERY nice lady, brought water and a neck warmer and escorted to the relaxation room. My masseuse was young but asked frequently if he was using the right pressure and focusing in the right spots. It was not the BEST massage I've ever had, but it was a million miles from the worst! I have been a member for 2 years and have been to other spas where you're paying $100 plus for 60 minutes a splash in the hot tub. For the price and convenience, I think Massage Envy is a great business and I will continue going back. read more

Went in two weeks before Valentines day to book a couples massage. I asked the front desk if they offered couples massages and they said yes. They booked me for a couples massage on Valentines Day. Day of they called me to cancel because one masseuse injured herself...understandable...we rescheduled for Wednesday of that week. They called me Tuesday to confirm my single massage, I said that we had scheduled a couples massage and they told me they do not offer couples massages to non-members. I said that after booking two weeks in advance and then having my massage cancelled the least they could do was make an exception. They refused, saying it was corporate policy. I have been a member at Massage Envy for over 7 years now and I am surprised that they are still charging the $60 monthly membership dues since they have been closed for nearly 2 months due to the pandemic. Nobody is answering the phone - which is understandable, however they ask you to send an email to a certain address and do not respond to that either. As gyms have stopped charging their monthly dues until they reopen, so should Massage Envy. I see that the ME staff has been responding to yelp reviews and hope they do the same to this message. I want in with my $39 1 hour massage. It was a great massage. My massage with Shirlene was excellent! She checked in multiple times to make sure she was using the appropriate pressure, etc. They had multiple blankets on the bed and the bed was heated as well. At the end, they will try to sell you on their wellness plan, which is a pretty good deal if you get frequent massages. For city employees and teachers, it is $54 and for others it is $59. With the wellness package, you get one free 1 hour massage per month. A few hours after my massage, I am feeling great! read more

You get what you pay for, it seems.... I was lured into joining the Arlington Massage Envy over a year ago. My account still has 6. unused massages on it. Why, you might ask? Here are some of the reasons: 1. Many of the good masseuses leave. I had a wonderful massage person named Cheryl and, just as I was getting into a rhythm of going to see her, she left. Guess what? The massage envy folks didn't even warn me. Isn't this all about establishing a relationship? I found out by accident, so I had a chance to say goodbye, but...sheesh.... 2. Manager is rigid. I had 3 unused massages and I wanted to use them to book 2 90 minute massages. No way would they bend about that. "Our computer system doesn't work that way." " Can't you do it manually?" "Our computer doesn't work that way." Conculsion: Lousy customer service and they don;t want to bother. 3. They substituted one masseuse for another without telling me--TWICE. Actually, they gave me about 20 minutes' warning. Not cool--masseuses are not interchangeable-everyone has good matches and bad matches. 4. Asking me to pre-tip. Would you walk into a restaurant and give the waiter 20% of your meal tab before you ate? Really!! The massage should speak for itself 5. They often hire masseuses just out of school who seem sincere, but are not too skilled. 6. The goopy, canned, new age music loop is enough to drive you batty. And they actually played CHRISTMAS CAROLS at holiday time. Did they stop to think that there might be some Jewish or Muslim clients on the table? 7. Finally, if I decided to use my unused massages, I would only have 30 days to use 6 massages. Not good. How about 2 or 3 months? That would be fair. . I just did the math. I have paid for 6 unused months@59= 354. And I could really use a massage--but I have no incentive to make an appointment, because of the things I mentioned above. So, for that price, I could have had three excellent, $100 massages plus tip from a massesuse or masseur who would make most of that money,,,, I don't like to complain, but I feel that I should warn people that this franchise is not what it's cracked up to be. They can't get the appointments right. I had rescheduled and they did not have it down and called to remind me of the appointment that I had canceled. Next time, they called and canceled because the therapist was out sick. When I did go, I got no benefit out of the session. I asked what kind of oil was being used and no one knew. The bed was heated (on a 90-degree day), so I asked them to turn it off. The massage was not relaxing and I ended up leaving early. Total waste of money. I will not go back there. If you like someone rubbing you with oil, then this is your place. read more

The $39 intro massage is a pretty good deal. But the massage I got was pretty unimpressive. The atmosphere of the waiting room was very relaxing, calm, etc, etc. The questionnaire they had me fill out was fairly thorough (massage intensity you're comfortable with, any areas you'd rather them not touch, injuries, allergies, etc, etc), which I suppose saves some conversation time at the beginning of the session if it's your first massage ever (personally I'd rather have the conversation). Once I was called in for my massage, I let the masseuse (what an awkward word) know more specifically about the issue I was having (painful upper back pain from carrying an overly heavy messenger bag around for a week), and that she should feel free to use whatever pressure she needed to get the job done. At first, I thought the girl who did my massage was actually one of the few masseuses (what an awkward word to type) can actually give a good deep tissue massage. Unfortunately, about halfway through the session I realized she was somehow digging into my knots without actually breaking them up. I was also pretty disappointed with the fact that she didn't actually concentrate a good chunk of time on the area I cited as being the entire reason I was there. In the end, I came in with some fairly painful upper back pain, and left with some fairly painful upper back pain. In any event, if you're looking for a soothing atmosphere and just a nice relaxing massage, the place isn't bad. There are a bunch of masseuses and masseurs on staff, so I suppose getting a really good person is hit or miss. read more

Though this will sound like hyperbole, I assure you it is not. I had the worst massage of my life at this location. I found it both violent and traumatic. My masseuse moved over my body in a manic fashion, never focusing for anything more than a quick pass on any of my muscles. At first, I just thought she was warming up my body (which, by the way, the oil was VERY cold and she gave no consideration for how much she was using or how quickly and repeatedly she'd slather this ice cold oil on me), moving over everything so quickly, but then it didn't stop. I had asked for a deep tissue massage, which I typically love--and in the past have specifically requested deeper pressure because I'm an athlete and like the deeper fascia and muscles to get loosened. While she used deep pressure, it was deep in all the wrong places--she pressed on bones and soft tissue without bother and would then fly over these areas repeatedly. My rib cage, in particular, started to get sore because her fingers would fly over each rib like an xylophone. I had to ask her to stop "massaging" that area. The same thing kept happening with my neck. She'd grab at my neck with such force and so repeatedly in quick succession that I thought my windpipe was going to break. I again had to ask her to stop. My massage therapist responded with an insulting tone, offering that she supposed I couldn't really take deep tissue and was more a "soft to medium touch" person. I was both near tears and livid. That I couldn't even give her feedback without her 1) failing to adjust her style or 2) returning such feedback with an underhanded dig was appalling to me. I spent the entirety of my massage holding back tears because of how under-comfortable and violated I felt and desperately wanting to end the massage early--but too scared to tell my therapist that for fear of how she'd take it. I had spent time prior to the massage filling out paperwork and speaking to one of the front staff about the areas I wanted worked on. This did not seem to translate to my therapist who never once touched my tight hip flexors nor my lower back and didn't "focus" on any other muscle group either. It was all just one big manic movement all over my body. No focus. No deep, sustained pressure--just rough, slipshod, fast movements here, there, and everywhere. As soon as I got out to my car, I broke down. The tears rolled and I tried to process what I had just been through. One should never have to feel man-handled during a massage but more so, one should never feel so afraid to tell the therapist to stop. Do not go here. Most therapists are bad to middling. Marissa at front desk needs some serious customer service training. Spend your money somewhere else.

I've had a similar experience to the others that have already reviewed the Arlington location. This was my first trip to a Massage Envy franchise and I was very disappointed. I could tell as soon as I got in there that they were running a quick turnover business and not a relaxing spa. My masseuse was very pleasant, but only 3 months out of massage school and very inexperienced. I could tell he was uncomfortable which made me uncomfortable. I tried some small talk, but he was still very nervous, never unprofessional, but just nervous. I paid for a full hour, but only got about 40 minutes. Massage Envy operates their business sort of like a gym. You are lured in for the $39 special and before the buzz has even worn off from the massage, they are giving you the hard sell to become a "member." Be prepared before you take advantage of the special otherwise you will walk away with an auto-bill on your credit card that never ends. If you sign up for a membership you are obligated to a monthly massage that will be billed to your credit card each month and is banked until you use it or until you end the membership (either 6 mos or 1 year), whichever comes first. It sounds like a good deal, and there are aspects of it that are, but be careful what you sign and stay alert to the end date of your obligation. The auto-bill does NOT stop being billed to your credit card after the term of the contract expires. They will just keep billing you until you go in and sign a form asking them to stop. And then they give you 30 days to use any billed but unused massages. After that, they just disappear even if you have paid for them. The quality of the massage depends entirely on the specific therapist. Some are great and some not so much. And a note to Harvard Pilgrim insurance members, Massage Envy offers a discount to their members. It is $5.00 each month's massage, but they will not apply it to an existing membership. They require that you terminate any current membership and sign a new 1 year agreement. I would give them more stars if they didn't operate the business in such a sleazy manner. It is a nice place and the massages I have had there have been mostly very good. Too bad they ruin the experience by the way they conduct the business aspect of the transaction. read more

I had an appointment at 11:00. They cancelled in the last minute. Seems that the therapist did not have enough work, so she bailed. They had nobody else available. I could have made an appointment elsewhere. Don't waste your time with these folks. read more
