I've been here twice. The first time I saw Evelyn and it was quite good, especially for a walk in massage. That's why this review isnt 1-2 stars. Then I called this weekend and asked to have a massage with her again but she was busy so they put me with Marissa. I have never in my life had such a weird/bad massage. It was completely non sequential - she'd rub a little on my neck and then move to my feet. She got up on the table and walked on me and straddled me, digging her elbows into my spine (I have bruises). She would randomly come and dig her oily fingers into my scalp and scratch my head for like 5 minutes - hard. She never rubbed my feet and hardly rubbed my shoulders - where I initially said I had pain. There was pressure in all the wrong places (ie, on my bones/spine, not muscles). I would be shocked if she's actually gone to massage school. I wouldnt write off this place as a whole - I imagine there are some good practitioners here. I just also might recommend spending some extra money so you dont end up bruised the next day. read more

Great massage by the masseuse Barbra G. However, I'm in tight financial straits right now and could only afford to leave a $5 gratuity. Gratuities are nice but optional. The masseuse proceeded to follow me down into the parking lot and tell me her victim story about how she deserves to be paid $50+/hr on top of what she is making at The Massage Place. That's ridiculous. I chose to leave more than the service price because I was grateful. She wasn't happy told me her victim story about being in debt, and wanted more. I'm in debt, too. I didn't ask for a discount to the services. That was completely unprofessional. Take it up with your employer as to why you're. It making enough or go out and generate more revenue. When I need to make more money, I don't complain to my clients that they need to pay a gratuity on top of my Personal Training services. No... Prior to the new ownership of the Main Street Massage Place, (Early Spring 2020) The Massage Place on Main Street was OUTSTANDING!; absolutely packed day and night with mostly local residents as clients who could count on the consistency of an array of highly qualified therapists specializing in a variety of massage techniques. The services were wonderful and reliable. Since the new ownership, The Massage Place on Main Street has ONLY Thai massage available with undertrained therapists. An additional downer is that the front desk will 'sell' the therapists as being adept in perhaps, Swedish massage, and the client will want to give them a chance, but once in the room, it is quickly realized that the therapists have no idea how to work with the body. I literally had pain for three days after my last session, and will not be returning. I tried 3 different massage therapists, having asked for a simple Swedish, deep tissue session. I specifically asked not to be twisted or moved in Thai ways. The poor therapists had absolutely no clue how to perform and twisted and jerked my body in ways that left very little doubt that they were quite inexperienced over all. I felt sorry for them. I would highly recommend to the new owners to hire a strongly qualified variety of well trained therapists to serve the community. Many of us, who live in the neighborhood, are professionals who have weekly massages regularly. We need a good Massage Place! Trying to bolster business by trying to sell the Thai massage therapists as being excellent in all types of massages is a down fall for you and you're losing the trust of the community. Previously, before the change in therapists, I was absolutely thrilled to tip big; $20, $30 per 1-hour session, without hesitation. It is with sad heart that The Massage Place that once was such a strong addition to the neighborhood doesn't see the changes that need to be made. Invest to empower your efforts. I've had many, many massages over the last 10 years, and she gave me, hands down, the best massage I've ever had. Idk what magic she uses, but it was so relaxing, ~sometimes~ hurt a little but like in a GOOD way where it she got all my knots out and it felt SO good after and I felt AMAZING leaving that place. I had the worst massage of my life here. My massage therapist was rude from the start - he asked me why I was getting a massage, and when I just said for maintenance, he seemed annoyed by that response. He then tried to upsell me (in the massage room) to a 90 minute, vs 60 minute massage. and seemed offended when I declined. He had an attitude. I was already extremely uncomfortable and wanted to leave, but felt too weird leaving. Then the whole massage itself was awful. He seemed to have a cold so the whole time he was sniffling and swallowing back mucus, and he was breathing really loud and heavy and fast. It was so gross. And the massage itself wasn't good at all. And when it was done he asked me aggressively, "So, do you feel better?" What? The whole thing was the opposite of relaxing. I guess you could say you get what you pay for, but I've had $50 massages that were WAY better than this. read more

Wow, what a weird experience. I've had a fair amount of massages in the past--maybe a dozen total. There are favorites and non-favorites on that list but I can pretty honestly say I'm not a very discerning customer when it comes to this stuff (cue Louis C.K. voice: It's *amazing* that you can just walk into a building and get all your back problems solved for next to no money.). Put another way, I've never had a massage or massage therapist I didn't like on some level. I've definitely never had one I specifically disliked. Things started off fine. The girl at the front desk was pleasant. Nobody else in the waiting area, easy paperwork to fill out, etc. I meet my masseuse, Grace, who seems mellow. We get to her massage room and I give my normal responses to her questions about preferences: Please focus on the lower back; feet and calves are ticklish--let's just avoid them unless it's really strong, direct pressure. I even joke about not wanting to throw any accidental karate kicks in a fit of ticklish reaction. We both have a laugh about that. Great. The massage starts and all is well. I mention that I particularly like scalp and hand stuff. Hopefully we can work that in if there's time. She says that's fine--we have plenty of time. Cool. Grace is doing an excellent job, then lays in a little heavy on the mid-back and I ask her politely to ease up a bit. She apologizes (which she didn't have to do) and lightens up. Marvelous. Nothing out of the ordinary from either party so far, right? Then--maybe around minute 20 of 60--Grace gets to the base of my skull. I have an old and fully healed injury back there that sometimes makes it an uncomfortable place to get rubbed. I usually don't say anything to massage places about it because it really takes a heavy hand to trigger the discomfort. This time around it just doesn't feel good, so I tell her about the injury and suggest that we just avoid the area... Out of nowhere, Grace responds (and I quote): "What, are you going to edit my massage? Honey, why don't you just let me do my thing. I've been doing this for 22 years." It's so randomly condescending that I almost think it's a joke--we'd already shared a couple at this point. So I sort of laugh and give a noncommittal, "It's just a sensitive spot since the injury." Then she lets out a long sigh and says, "Oh boy." As you can imagine, the remaining 40-ish minutes are really relaxing. Not. The quality of the massage is fine, but I just lie there trying to figure out what in our conversation caused her to act so lame. She finishes up and I tell her the massage was great but what's up with the attitude at the beginning? This is a close (and I think fair) approximation of how it went down: Me: I had an injury on my head and asked you not to massage that area. It was definitely not a comment on your professionalism or quality of work. I've never been condescended to like that. Grace: That's funny because I felt like you were condescending to me. Me: I feel like we miscommunicated here. Grace: (in a tone that rhymes with "schmondescendingly") You don't get very many massages, do you? Me: Uh... Grace: You're a grown man, I'm 60 years old, it's your job to tell the massage therapist if you have an injury spot you'd like for them to avoid. Me: That's exactly what I did. Grace: You know what, I don't want to do this. I wish you the best of luck. This isn't a good match. There are plenty of other therapists here. i wish you the best of luck. This isn't a good match. Awesome. I had an internal monologue throughout that I kept internal to avoid sounding like a douche. It went like this: "It's kind of your job to make the client feel comfortable. Actually, that's exactly your job. If you're a tattoo artist, you're not allowed to get mad if the customer wants a unicorn instead of the portrait of Dom DeLuise you'd rather draw." Beyond that, you especially can't get cranky if the customer isn't being a tool about it. There's a shorter version of that inner monologue: "This person is from another planet." I was in my underwear that whole time, by the way. I'm pretty sure this will be the first and last real complaint I have about a massage therapist. Grace is likely a bad apple at what seems to be a good establishment. Or maybe a decent apple on a bad day. In the end, the cause matters about as much as Michael J. Fox's werewolfness after everybody found out it made him an incredible basketball player with the heart of a champion: not much. read more

I've had two massages at this location with two different therapists and both have been great! One was a more traditional Swedish/deep tissue massage and the second time had some Thai elements to it, which was lovely! I felt like it really worked my knots and I did feel like I got my money's worth. My only complaint is that both times I was taken to one of the rooms in the very front, so whenever the front desk people or other customers were talking I could hear everything. I know they work in a small space and the front desk does try to be as quiet as possible but I'd love to be placed further back next time to minimize distraction! read more

Here is some insight into the massage business. Typically, massage students take 150 hours of training and apply for jobs. Some cities require more hours, some less. The interviews are quick and subjective. A big part is appearance rather than skill. Most clients prefer women over men. So, friendly, warm, good looking women have much better chances. Skills is pretty secondary. All the places pay therapists about the same $20 and a few bucks more depending on specialty and experience. That fancy $120 spa and no frills $40 place hire from the same pool and pay them the same money. Why is skill so secondary? Have you ever had a cat knead you with its paws? It feels divine. The cat has zero hours of massage training. Simply when people touch you, you feel how warm or cold they hold you. A sweet person with no training may make you feel warm and loved. A person with 10 years experience may be in a dull rut and you'll feel worse. Having been to the massage place a few times, you can get a wide variety of people. On one hand, a massage instructor was working there to make extra money. On the other hand, a young fresh out of the school, awkwardly poking was at the table. Almost everyone quits massage as a profession within the first year. People come with great enthusiasm about making people feel better, healing, and mind-body connection. If they are lucky to get enough clients to make money, many get physical injuries, because the work is hard on the body, especially thumbs and wrists. So, as a client, you are guaranteed a regular influx of new people that are all quite different. If you didn't like massage therapist, chances is that it has nothing to do with the place. It's simply you and that individual. From some of the negative comments, there was one person that took off all her clothes to find the therapist surprised. Here in LA, it is typical to take off your clothes and go under the sheets. Being naked under the sheet vs. expecting the therapist to put the sheet over is the difference. There are usually two sheets on the table. They can be quite thin. So, it's sometimes hard to separate them. LA city regulation requires clients to wear paper underwear. Nobody does that. NoCal is more free spirited. The covering sheet is only provided for warmth, not modesty :) Some other comments were about the room being too hot/too cold and the like. It's really important to communicate with the therapist. If you are hot say so. They can't read your mind. Some people are naturally hot all the time. Other's are cold all the time. Communication is really key. Tell them what you are looking for. Tell them what you don't like. Ideally, you have an ongoing relationship with a therapist. And, the therapist can educate you about massage and really get to know you. PS: A word about massage recommendations. Humans like all mammals love touch. Any time, we get touched, it feels good. That's why pretty much every person says that their therapist is super awesome. Those few people that always complain, I suspect that it's often more about their discomfort with surrendering to another human being/personality difference. read more

Wow, i'm really shocked other reviewers said good things about David. I recently requested him. I thought i had him the last time- apparently i was wrong. Very wrong. When he started, it was a jerking, thrusting movement. So hard, my cheekbone was bumping against the headrest. Ew that sounds weird. Anyway, I said very politely "what style of massage is this?" and he said "oh, i just kind of make it up"... ohhhkkaaaaaay. NOT a good sign. I partially blame myself for what happened, because I shut my mouth (strange, i hardly ever do that, but i kept thinking it would get better, like a housewife in an awful relationship). IT WAS AWFUL. I was actually tensing up the whole time since my body was being pounded and jerked with barely any massage oil. The next day I had a golf ball-sized BRUISE on my cheekbone. If you are getting a massage once a year for your anniversary, then sack up and go to Burke Williams and wear matching robes and relax. If you have body aches, are working out a lot and generally need to relieve tension, this is a great place to get frequent massages. The skinny: -YES(!) the walls are thin. Ask if they can turn the bird chirping music up, or practice your ability to zen out. For the price, they aren't going to have fancy accommodations. -The price is great and, in my opinion, you get more than what you pay for. -You need to try a few people out because every therapist is different. Some may be bad, but it doesn't mean the entire establishment is bad - you need to judge each therapist independently. That being said, I sit here in judgment of LISA who is amazing and trained in all types of massage. When I walk in, she is always reviewing the card I filled out my first day (to remind herself of what I like, what injuries I have, etc) and throughout the massage, she is checking in with me, without being invasive. She caters the massage to whatever you want (yesterday, I would say mine was a combo sweedish/deep tissue/Thai massage). She is no nonsense and I dig that. Insider tips: -Don't come here if you are completely new to massage. You need to ask for what you want and be up front about your likes and dislikes. If you don't know what you want, you may be disappointed. -While filling out your member card during your first visit, take some time and think about what you want, what parts of you hurt, etc. If the therapist is good, he/she will review that before your session. -Ladies, if you are getting any kind of Thai massage, wear your boy-short panties. When I cannot get my regular therapist, I call around. It is mainly by appointment but there are times there is an opening or cancellation. This is a no frilles massage only place so not for anyone seeking spa experience. Always clean rooms and fresh sheets. Sometimes the locations have a shower but I have never seen anyone use one. I've use it once. Not sure if Main St. Has one. I've been to Montana, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Ocean Park, Overland locations. I believe out of 60 massages, I only got 1 okay massage. I am not one for Thai massage when I ask for deep tisue. At this location, I have been massaged by Monique twice. Therapist rating is 4.5 stars and I'll update as I become a regular. I get a real strong deep tissue. There will be a therapist for whatever technique/style you want. They validate the garage parking for $1, enter garage on Marine. Make sure to ask for enough stickers if you go over 1 hour 20 minutes. One of 2 times, I didn't. The other time, the receptionist made sure. read more

I have been to various branches of The Massage Place (Ocean Park, Montana, Pacific Palisades) and have had nothing but AMAZING experiences. My comparison: I have had a couple of massages at Burke Williams Spa in Santa Monica and it was absolutely the WORST massage I have ever had (and they were simply rude). So, that being said. I have seen TG (Ocean Park), Danny (Montana), and I cannot remember the name of the gentleman at the Palisades branch. So, I called this branch to schedule a massage as I had a pinched muscle and some serious pain and discomfort from the nape of my neck down to my shoulders. I do not know who answered, by they asked what I liked and based my appointment on the other therapists I had seen (specializing in reflexology and deep tissue) and I ended up seeing Joey at 7:30pm. My job is insanely stressful and I do love to run and play volleyball and have COMPLETELY neglected having a massage for the last 6 months. Let's just say that my shoulders were practically up to my neck. I always get flack for being so tight, but hey, what am I going to do? Most. Amazing. Massage. Ever. Yes, it did hurt a bit, but my back and neck are always SO tense that I expect it. Joey was professional and really listened to me. He was a bit worried he was hurting me because I popped and cracked so much, but I assured him that my body always does that. He worked SO hard on my shoulders and back and, while every knot wasn't worked out (it probably would have taken another hour, to be honest) I cannot explain to you the relief I felt when I left. It no longer hurt to move my neck, or to walk for that fact, and my shoulders/clavicle (trapezius) were once again sitting where they are intended to be. Honestly, I have had GREAT experiences at the other branches, but I think I will FOREVER make appointments with Joey. I would have never tried this place had my trusted friend not told me about it. I couldn't believe that such a reasonably priced massage could be any good. I'm so glad took the chance! I work out a lot so I prefer deep tissue massages, and Tonia is amazing! She got the pressure just right when I said medium, but kept checking with me to make sure it was good for me. The real test for me though, is that I felt really good the next day and not sore at all! This place is no frills. There are no amenities or fancy cucumber water, but you get a quality massage for a full 60 minutes. You can even take advantage of their packages and save even a few more bucks. I have been coming to the Massage Place on Main Street, Venice for over 14 years. I was fortunate enough to get Mark as my massage therapist on my very first visit. I have had massages at "high end" establishments in my life time, and I have been to Thailand 6 times and have had great massages there, but I can say that Mark is simply the best massage therapist that I have ever experienced in my life. He is an expert in giving massages that are somewhere between a firm "sports massage" and a "relaxing therapeutic massage." He has a gift for intuitively knowing how to go right to the exact pain spot on me, without even asking (but he does ask). He always finds out what I need before we start, and he delivers every time. I have had a myriad of injuries and pains over the year, and his massages are always a key part of my recovery. In addition, he is VERY knowledgeable about helping the body to heal, he has nutrition and homeopathic interests that he shares with me, when it relates to helping my current ailment. I accidently reviewed the wrong location...so here is my review of the Main St Massage Place. I love this place! But, more importantly, I rely on them to stay healthy and mobile. I have fibromyalgia and deep tissue massage is one of the most helpful (and essential) things I do for it. I go every 2 weeks and only see Evelyn. After trying out multiple people, she wins, hands down, the best & most knowledgeable of all the therapists there. She instinctively knows where my problem areas are and how to relieve the pain and tension that I live with every day. If u want a really strong, deep tissue massage that will probably hurt a little in good way, she is the one. And she's also a wonderful human being! If u prefer a male therapist, her husband Jose, is also great (but he is usually at the Abbott Kinney location). The prices are so reasonable, especially if u buy a package. It's no frills, bare bones, very clean and comfortable...and worth every penny! I highly recommend. I just read thru some of the reviews below. Let me make something clear. The front desk staff is a revolving door of young people-some good, some bad. If u had bad service, it was a reflection of the bad management that is now gone. If ur expecting a lounge-y spa-like experience, go somewhere else. Be specific in what u want, read reviews and ask for a specific therapist. UPDATE! On my right, an older woman was yacking about her grandson and what she did over the holidays, while on my left, a younger woman was laughing with her therapist about her dining experience at La Paella, a recent visit to her doctor and what her brother was up to. Seriously, it was like they were both in the tiny massage room with me. I could hear every word. It was impossible to relax and enjoy my massage. I was so frustrated that I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could head home and have some peace! Don't patronize this place unless you pack your earplugs. In many ways, this place is great. If you need a massage, don't have a lot of time, don't want to spend too much, and are willing to roll the dice a little, you can get lucky. I think that happened to me once, a few years ago. But recently, every time I go to this location I am disappointed. I even have a conversation with myself about not being disappointed, and am still disappointed. The last 3 or 4 times I've been here, I feel like I'm getting the person who just graduated from Massage Therapy school. Inevitably, there comes the 10 minute "extended laying on of hands," which I think is really a sign of "I have no idea what to do next." And I just want to yell out "Get your hands on there and rub, woman! I don't need to be converted!" My strong recommendation is to push the receptionist to give you the best person, or to find a good person and really stick with him or her. ***** This location as well as another one in Santa Monica are NO LONGER owned by the original owners, these two locations were sold and are under different management which explains a great deal. Last week I called and made two appointments one for me and one for my husband, I specifically made two requests, that BOTH massages were outside and that we each had a female massage therapist. When we arrived the "supervisor" was wearing a mask with her nose exposed and was very rude. We were told that there was only ONE space outside and only ONE female therapist and that the person who took our reservation had not bothered to write down my requests. The "supervisor" made NO attempt to try and rectify the situation. So my husband ended up with a massage and I ended up even more tense with no massage. I would never recommend this location. Don't waste your time or money. Due to Covid right now the only Massage Place that is open (and owned by the founders) is in Pacific Palisades, do yourself a favor and go there. read more

I have been coming to this place for almost an year, but recently I have had really bad experiences. My previous therapist (Zoltan) called me on my cell phone on the next day and left me a voice mail asking me to call him. Totally unprofessional and not to mention that he must of grabbed my phone number from my file! Because of it, today I have requested a female therapist and they booked me with Grace. She gets easily upset for each and every thing you tell her like "could you apply less pressure when massaging my head" etc. She starts arguing with you and starts telling you how this is not a good match. I saw that one customer had the same terrible experience with Grace about 10 months ago, I guess things haven't changed much ... As a "morning pass" holder I am able to get massages at a discounted rate M-F from 10am-3pm. If you have a flexible work schedule it's a great deal and I have already gotten more than my money's worth ( there is a small cost to get the pass). I have found that my personal favorite masseuse is Evelyn. She has a great rhythm, knows how to pay attention to your requests and hits all the problem areas. My boyfriend and I decided to go out for a massage on a Sunday night. We knew our options were limited because it was sunday but mostly because it was almost 9pm. We searched yelp and ending up finding this place. My boyfriend made the call to ask if they were still accepting clients and the woman on the other side of the phone said there were two spots left for a 60min massage. PERFECT. She then requested his card information to confirm the reservation. We've never been asked that before and felt a little paranoid about it so we chose not to give her the information. She said that was the only way to guarantee the reservation but if we could still come in with high hopes. We arrived at 9 and there were still two spots left; one at 9:15 and the other at 9:30. We took them. The woman working the front desk said that our options for massages with these two therapists were either deep tissue, swedish, or combo but she didn't actually ask which we were coming in for. She asked who we wanted to give us our massages and our options were Jack and Hana. I didn't feel comfortable with the male therapist so I asked for Hana and my boyfriend got Jack. My boyfriend went in at 9:15 and while I waited in the small entrance area, I realized that there were multiple signs posted about gratuity. A gentleman walked out from getting a massage and went to pay. He was asked if he was leaving a tip on his card. He said he'd leave 20% and the receptionist said that they didn't accept anything less than $15 for the massage that he got. He seemed annoyed by that and I took note. I went in for my massage around 9:22. Hana walked me into the room, said "okay I'll be back". When she left, I noticed another sign on the door that said gratuity for a 60min $49 massage from Hana was $20. That's almost 50% tip. Sorry, no way. When she came back in, she asked what were my target areas. I told her my whole lower body had been giving me a lot of problems lately and she said okay. She sat down, pumped oil on her hands and began rubbing it on my back. The lights were still high and the music was lower than I'm used to. I also couldn't get over the sound of a loud voice from a room that didn't seem to far. I thought the walls were thin and maybe it was someone in the establishment next door. I later found out that it was Jack talking to my boyfriend while giving the massage. Why would you be that loud in a place that's supposed to be so serene but, whatever. The massage. Trash. For the first few minutes, Hana essentially just oiled up my back. Her rubbing was so light. She asked if her pressure was okay and at first I thought that that's how she started off so I said it was fine but at like the 15min mark, I was over it. I asked her to use more pressure but it didn't change. Not even a little. She kept stopping randomly to pop cough drops, wipe her nose, and even rubbed vapor rub on herself. I was very irritated but I tried to keep calm. The only time that she actually used pressure was when she rubbed her forearm across my back a couple of times. Everything else could've been done better by my 11 year old brother. She got up maybe 8 minutes before time and said "okay I'm finished, bye". I got dressed and walked out to the front where I found my boyfriend getting ready to pay. The receptionist asked how we were tipping and proceeded to direct us one of the many signs for gratuity. I told my boyfriend that $15 (the minimum) was all that was deserved for my massage. He felt the same about his. He paid and we left. I always have a great experience at this location. I find that every masseuse I've had does a really great job and I feel light as air when I walk out. For the money charged, this place is incredible. I have had fancy shmancey massages for more than twice the money and they aren't any better. In fact, the massages I get at this place are often better than those from other places. This could be because other place are relying upon a more relaxing atmosphere to carry them through. At this place, it is all about the massage. No amount of gorgeous scenery or jacuzzi action can make up for a less than adequate massage. Since there are no distractions at this joint, that's what you get. A great massage. I would say that like other Yelpers have said here -- try to find a masseuse that you like and stick with that person. That's what I found works best. I also liked Lisa. You can park in the lot adjacent to the building -- but watch the time or you may have to pay a buck or two. Also, the parking gets jammed on certain nights. Luckily, I now walk -- so don't have to deal with it. I think they do take walk-ins, but you are better off making an apt. They usually can get you in the same day if you are flexible. I've seen people told they have to come back in an hour when they walk in without an apt. read more
