This place is great! The "mandatory tip" did not happen to me and my family at all. My group had a great massage experience at this place. They had great skills in pressure points, consistently checking to make sure their strength, and work on knots without causing intolerable pain. Having had so many massage experience for these many years, I know right away who is good or not. And this place definitely has some great therapists working here. About the tipping, come on! They are only charging $15 per hour. Please Tip them $10 minimum. If they are doing a great job, give them more! Don't complaint that they are asking you for $5 (were you going to tip them $3?). I do sometimes grit through the pain because I know the end result will be worth it. Today, my lady (didn't get her name) really got the kink out of my neck and shoulder. But I had to grit through the pain. What can I say? Pain can be pleasure. Muahahaha.... Pros: - Clean and the layout is good. Generally quiet. Cons: - It is sometimes a hit or miss. There have been times when I wish my masseuse applied more pressure to help relieve the knots. Then there are times when you get someone who applies too much pressure. You may need to find that right person and then make sure you always request that person. (I haven't found that person yet). - Some (not all) will pick up their cell phone while massaging you. It's happened to me. Hence, why you need to find that right person. Observations: - Yes, they gossip. Whatever. Who doesn't? I generally come in with my boyfriend and they like to tell me how we'll make beautiful babies together. Oh well.... It's cultural. I accept it and don't take it personal. It's no different than your stylist or manicurist making small talk with you. - It can get a little rushed when a line forms. Recommendations: - My lady today told me that busy times are generally after 5-6pm on weekdays. Weekends are almost always busy, unless you go early. Better to make a reservation ahead of time, especially once you've found that masseuse you really like. - Call ahead of time to see what the wait times are, especially on weekends. Non Asian (Ie: American) caveat: - Mandatory $5 tip. Get over it. It's less than tipping at luxury spas, like Glen Ivy. Are you really going to be that stingy when an 1hr massage costs $20? - Their English is not too good, but its enough to get by. Be patient, not judgmental. I've seen plenty of non-Americans come here, so they do try to serve the non-Chinese speaking clientele. - Don't feel like you have to get more than the standard $15 massage. They'll always try to get you to get the combo. The standard massage is technically full body. If you want attention focused on a specific area of the body, then perhaps a different combo would be worth it, but I've always received the standard $15 massage. - Speak up! Whenever I've taken someone non-Chinese, they tell me that the pressure is not what they're used to. Chinese massages tend to be more pressure point orientated (ie: more painful). The idea is to push down on certain pressure points in order to help relieve knots and the tension. Final answer- I still come back. I've been coming here for over a year. The massages here are great from Lisa. If you speak Chinese, her service is very personal and tailored to your needs. Due to a shoulder injury I come often for a full body massage to work out my kinks from my job (I'm a piano teacher and often have work-related repetitive stress injury issues), and she always tailors the hour long massage to my specific needs, working longer on the areas that need it. The downside is that they basically expect, and will ask for, a $10 tip for a $25 massage, so the prices are in no way up front. However, if you are prepared for that, and you want a clean environment and a nice massage from a good masseuse, Lisa is the way to go. I like my massages nice and rough, this is the place to go to if you wanted to get your ass handed to you. It's repetitive motions which is nice if your trying to work out a knot...it's not like Thai mssages where they stretch you, or like Swedish massages where it's slower... The place is nice with Asian decor, there were a couple of ladies lying in the massage chairs watching Chinese news/TV when I walked in. I got the $25 Body, Scalp, and Foot massage. It was hard to relax because the TV was still blaring the Chinese news. The masseuse was nice and she did a good job with the scalp massage. After that we went into the private quarters for the body massage which was decent. They give you options on how much pressure you would like on the shoulder blades and back. Came in at 4:15 pm in the afternoon. No appointment and no waiting. They took care of us immediately. A one hour long full body massage for $25 with a "minimum" $10 tip, $35 all in. We're used to the Korean spas around Koreatown that run $1 per minute but include saunas, Jacuzzis, robes, etc. Usually spend $75 for a one hour massage at those type of places. This place can't compare to K-town. But for $35, the pressure was good, asked several times if we needed stronger or softer, and they quickly figured out where our problem areas were at. So, when you're coming in here, and you expect an "acupressure", don't even bother, you won't be getting any, so you might as well go with the 20$ foot massage, it's the same thing. Another thing, my boyfriends masseuse was texting & was on a call, and she was talking to my masseuse half the time. Piece of advice to this place; leave your phones out of the room. Me and my friend both got the $30 one and my other friend got the $20 one. I got done first after the person who massages me gave me my water she stood there waiting to get paid. Pretty disappointing. Subpar to the rest of the places I've been to. I requested an hour body massage and masseuse was late!! She finished at 7 on the dot so I was jipped for my time. I was pretty annoyed at first but I figured "what's a couple minutes?" and kept my mouth shut. After our session, the owner then had the audacity to ask for more TIP after I had already given them 20%. This really irritated me as both the owner and I had a back and forth about the gratuity system. I worked in the restaurant industry where 20% is the norm for great service while 30% is exceptional. The service here was NOT EXCEPTIONAL. Being the nice person that I am, I eventually tipped them 33%. Figured the ahjummas needed it. This place is too pricey for mediocre service. And for someone to ask for tip when I clearly am familiar with the system was a huge insult! According to the owner, being a server isn't as exhausting as it is to be a masseuse.
