I am a fan of Matchbox in general. My trip into this location was not a disappointment. My wife had stopped in here before and brought some pizza home but it wasn't fresh out the over. So, we made it over for lunch one day and ordered up a half fire and smoke and a half fig and balsamic. Oh the fig!!!! I loved it. My wife enjoys the fire and smoke but I am not a fan of the cheese. Just my opinion but the flavor is great. After having that black mission fig that fire and smoke didn't stand a chance. The service in here was really good as well. Our server was super nice and our food was out in a timely manner. Next time I stop in maybe I will try something other than pizza... but it's soooo gooood. read more

I frequent Mosaic district but this was my first check-in @ March box. It was the first warm spring day for us so we decided to sit outside. Really nice setting. Our server Madeleine was super nice and prompt to bring our drinks and food- we told her we were really hungry. I had BBQ baby back - perfectly made. It came with corn bread and coleslaw. Corn bread was really good but my focus was to finish meat on my plate. My husband had chorizo burger. He said it was okay. I gave him some of my baby back ribs. I am so excited to see a branch of this great restaurant now in NoVa. The food here is just totally awesome. I went with a group of people and we all ended up tasting each others' food. I loved every single thing I tried. The sliders with onion strings are addictive. The cobb salad is a work of art. I love that you can choose from a variety of proteins to sub into your salads (beef, chicken, seared tuna, etc). The pizzas are absolutely perfect. I loved the fire & smoke and also the prosciutto & black mission fig (which, with its combo of sweet and salty flavors, was so good I'm still craving more days later). The crispy asian short ribs were phenomenal. The meat just falls apart in your mouth. So juicy, tender and flavorful. The service was fantastic - incredibly nice, personable and knowledgeable about the menu. One of our party asked about the heat level of a dish and not only did our server NOT pronounce it "chi-pole-tay," she knew that chipotles were smoke-dried jalapenos. The wine and beer selections also impressed. Next time I need to save room for the apple crisp. I would love to try their brunch here someday, too. 5 stars for the wedge salad, 3 stars overall because my friends did not like their food. My friends and I were looking for a place to have dinner on a Sunday after seeing a movie at the Angelika theater. Most restaurants had at least a 20 minute wait time, but we were able to get seated at Matchbox right away, and there were plenty of other tables available. Matchbox certainly wasn't my first choice. I always associate the name Matchbox with pizza and assume it mainly serves pizza, which is far from the truth. The gluten-free menu is rather limited, with mainly salad offerings. However, the wedge salad was worth the visit. It was made with artisan romaine, red onions, tomatoes, red wine vinaigrette, and gorgonzola dressing. I liked having romaine lettuce instead of the typical iceberg wedge. Also both of the dressings were phenomenal. I'm returning to Matchbox this week just for the salad. I also tried the Gilded Age cocktail made with Bombay gin, St. Germaine, lychee juice, sparkling wine, and passion fruit pulp. It was decent but I probably wouldn't order it again. My friend had the Baby Kale salad with roasted sweet potatoess, red onions, grape tomatoes, goat cheese, poached egg, and nueske bacon vinaigrette. She disliked the salad and though the bacon dressing wasn't appetizing. My other friend had the Wood-Fired Lamb Sandwich with charred scallion yogurt, crispy artichokes, feta, and naan. It came with chickpea fries which were decent. The lamb sandwich was sub par compared to other lamb dishes in the area. Overall, a mediocre restaurant unless you get the wedge salad. read more

I went to the Matchbox for their friend and family event before they opened. I lived in the area so I have been very excited about the new Matchbox opening in this area. I have to say I was not disappointed. People at the Matchbox were very friendly and helpful. we sat outside because it was a nice day. it was very nice. I think they were still working on the table arrangements because I had no space behind my chair and the big table behind me. We ordered the prosciutto & black mission fig and fire and smoke. the pizzas were great. I liked the spicy flavor of the fire and smoke and then the sweet flavor of the prosciutto and black mission fig. The pizzas were very thin. the crust was crunchy. Overall it was a great experience and I will be going back here and try all the pizzas! =D read more

I'm updating my review. After I posted my first review on yelp, I was contacted by Jim D. He said that they wanted me to give them a second chance and accommodated me with a complimentary brunch. It was fantastic ! I was impressed with the brunch menu, there are a lot of options and it's unlimited! Bring a big appetite because everything is delicious! Janet the manager has a great personality and made sure I enjoyed my meal & my sever Ruth was friendly and they both did an excellent job making sure I had a wonderful dining experience! eating there was awful, other than the delicious spinanch and artichoke dip that was served with stale chips... we were sat in the back corner of the resturaunt where the light was flickering the entire time. as someone closely friends with people with epilepsy it was unsafe and headache inducing. they did not come to our table to refill the water once.. When our entrees came we ordered the Nashville chicken sandwhich which was one of the worst sandwhich I have ever eaten. I've only had Matchbox once, at the Chinatown location. I never thought the food was superb and definitely had no desire to go back. But my boyfriend and I were going to see a movie at the theater next door, so convenience played a big factor as to why we ate here. I had a reservation but was a little late - but when I arrived, I was seated right away. The hostess was so nice and understanding (the one redeeming factor). Our waiter was so slow and kept trying to push us to order more stuff (drinks and dessert) when we were obviously not interested. Our drinks were in desperate need of a refill and he did not bring us a new drink until we were basically finished with our meal! The meat lovers pizza was super salty and so are the olives. Went here for a friend's birthday. I got their salmon special and my friend got their chicken breast marinara pasta. Both dishes were very dry. My salmon was overcooked and the chicken breast pasta was very bland. We were disappointed with the entrees and didn't bother to try desert. Service was good though. The pizza at Matchbox is terrific, and I've been to many of their locations. However, the wait and service at the Merrifield location leaves a lot to be desired. They are never organized, the wait is always longer than they say and I encountered extremely rude check in staff on more than one occasion. Not sure what's up with this one, but 2 hours to wait after a decent call ahead (and 2 kids in tow) just isn't worth it. I'll take my business elsewhere--or at least to another matchbox location where they have their stuff figured out. read more

The food is generally very good, but we had an odd experience with the waiter. I wanted a sausage, green pepper and mushroom pizza. I asked if they had any green peppers. They said they only had red peppers. I asked if they had any mushrooms. They said they only had large portobello mushrooms. I asked if they had sausage. No, but they had pepperoni. I ordered a pepperoni pizza. My wife ordered a salad. The salad had the bell peppers and mushrooms I was asking about. WTF?? My pizza was good, but it was just not what I was craving. read more

I've been spoiled by amazing pizza from my trips to Italy and I have also had sooo many disgusting pizzas in the US from supposedly amazing places (*cough* 2 Amy's)... that I rarely get excited about going to a pizza place in the US. That said, Matchbox pizza is pretty good. The pizza is nowhere near as good as real Italian pizza, but definitely pizza I can look forward to eating. I don't think the flavors are necessarily Italian, but I think the pizza is tasty because they use really high quality ingredients. I also like that it's a thin crust kinda pizza. I've had the following: - prosciutto and fig - sausage and onion - fire and smoke - and pepperoni I've loved everything but the fire and smoke pizza. It wasn't a bad pizza per se but it seemed to me more like a BBQ panini. As for the salads, oh dear lord. THEY HAVE THE BEST SALADS!! Understand that I'm a life long meatatarian; for me to like a salad, it has to be truly amazing. If it's your first time, definitely order the apple/pear salad. I can eat gallons of this salad. I've also had the calamari salad, and that was delicious. Everything is delicious including the desserts; service is great, and the prices are good. Best, it's next to the cutest movie theater in the DC area. It has a great atmosphere too - it's pretty lively, festive, fancy looking but unpretentious, and you can watch sports in the bar area. read more

Went there this evening because my boyfriend convinced me we should give it another chance. Danny the manager got word I was not happy with my meal, and when I explained why, he was very understanding and polite. I told him about my long lost love of the ginormous meatball and he informed me it would be coming back because of customer feedback. He even recognized my previous review which shows he listens to the people. Then.. out of nowhere... we are surprised with the meatball!! I couldn't believe it, and it really made my night. Went for the first time last night and to be quite honest, I wasn't sure it would live up to the hype (I rebel against hype)! But... it did! Thankfully it wasn't busy (but it was busy enough for a Tuesday evening). The service was great and the food was amazing. I ordered a half and half small pizza which after 3 slices filled me up pretty well. I had the chicken pesto pizza on one half and the veggie pizza on the other half. All very good flavors. This place has the best churros. Make sure to order them. The server we had was helpful and patient even though we had a large group. My friends and I shared a few pizzas and they were all good. The crust was super delicious. The place looks very classy and since there were a lot of people there it was very enjoyable. Came here on a beautiful Saturday for brunch. We were seated immediately (I guess it's not very popular for brunch even on a beautiful day). We got the steak and eggs as well as the huevos rancheros. Both were fantastic and there wasn't a thing left on our plates after. We also tried some of the bloody marys where were good as well. I think they have 4 or 5 different flavors. If you've been here for lunch or dinner, you know this place serves solid food. Come here for brunch on the weekends (and Monday holidays) for a little extra surprise! read more

This review is for their service. I am a lover of all things pizza related so Matchbox has been one of my go-to places and this location happens to be closer to home. For it to be so close to home, it is telling that I've only been to this location maybe four times. The last visit was my final straw. I was so frustrated I left without eating. Two visits ago my husband and I were promptly seated but waited 15 or so minutes before we finally flagged down someone to ask where our waiter was. As it turned out, our designated waiter had been one of the many who had passed up our table several times. How does this happen? It was brunch so we ordered our typical meal and it was good enough. Last visit was this past Sunday. My husband and I decided to drop in on a whim after a visit to the movies next door. To our surprise, there were open seats at the bar so we decided to sit there. We sat listening to the bartender chat it up with the woman next to us waiting for our turn. A couple comes and sits next to us on our other side, well squeezes in because they had to add an additional chair. So there was obvious commotion and you would think the bartender would immediately come over to greet my husband and I, right? Yes, he did come over but it was to warmly greet the newly seated couple, share with them that day's specials, and give them menus. I like to think that me being a minority wasn't a factor but couldn't help but take it to heart when the newly seated, non-minority couple looked over at us and the woman gave us a sympathetic/awkward 'sorry this just happen' smile as the waiter was still talking to them. My husband and I got our things and left. Did the bartender bother to turn his head a few inches to ask why we were leaving and to right his wrong? Nope. This is unacceptable by any measurement. I am beyond patient and would rather defer to saying nothing than to draw up complaints but there seems to be a problem at this location. I will not be returning here ever again. My money is green like everyone else's and it will be appreciated. I hope the managers or whoever at Matchbox read these comments and digest them. I only browsed through the other reviews very briefly but I see that this is not the first complaint about service. Respect your customer, regardless. read more

Unfortunately, I've only been here once since they opened (probably fortunate for my diet!), but it is one of the best meals I've had in awhile! We went out to celebrate my fiance's birthday and made sure to indulge! We had a salad and pizza (as well as glasses of wine!) which were all delicious, but what really stood out was the dessert, and I'm not a dessert person. I ordered the coffee and doughnuts and I almost ate myself into a food coma! Anyone that goes there needs to try this, they are amazing! I also loved the space itself. I'm a sucker for exposed brick! My husband and I dined here for brunch and the food was delicious. I had the Crab Benedict and unlike most places where you get a few crab flakes thrown on, this Benedict was more like a full sized crab cake with an egg on top! Delicious! My husband had the ribeye entree (yes, for brunch!) and he enjoyed his meal very much as well. My only recommendation is for the server to ask if bread is desired. Most restaurants automatically bring bread or ask. Here they did not and when I asked about it I was told customers had to specifically request it. So we requested the bread but was not told there was a charge for it. The bread is delicious and well worth the $1.00! But I think the server should have asked if bread was desired and then to advise of the charge. With this minor recommendation, everything else was wonderful and I recommend dining here! read more

Ohh I am new fan of Matchbox and I am so glad that they opened in the Mosaic District! Conveniently located under the fancy movie theater, Matchbox is easy to find. Different textures of wood make up much of the decor at Matchbox, which I really like. We went on a Sunday night and had less than a 10 minute wait for a table. This gave us time to peruse the menu before being seated. They have a decent amount of options but Matchbox is known for their burgers and pizza. My boyfriend and I went the pizza route. We split a large and made it half Black fig and Prosicutto and Matchbox Meat Pizza. Our waiter was nice enough to offer to split the large because we couldn't decide on the size. Both pizzas were good, but let me tell you about the Black Fig and Prosicutto, since that was my choice, and the pizza I consumed the most off. This pizza was amazing! I loved the combination of sweet and salty. The prosicutto they used was thin, full of flavor and salty yet not overwhelmingly salty. The black fig gave the right amount of sweetness and really worked well with the prosciutto and choice of cheese they used on this pizza. The arugula on top of the pizza was a nice touch, and I think worked to help balance the flavors. In addition to food, Matchbox has a well stocked bar and separate menu of libations, which they call their inventory. The bartenders are good, they make their drinks strong. And if you are able to save room for dessert, I strongly recommend getting Matchbox's version of Beignets, dusted with cinnamon, and served with a Kahlua Cream dipping sauce. Yup, I said it. Kahlua. It's amazing, and if you don't believe me, go ahead and order some. We loved the food and the atmosphere of Matchbox. The only reason I have for not giving it 5 stars is service. It started off slow, but then our server improved. I think it turned to the positive when another server came to check on us after our original server did not come back for several minutes after placing our drink orders. Overall: Matchbox is nice addition to the Merrifield/Mosaic district. We came here for a friend's birthday lunch and it was a decent place to sit with a large group of friends. Overall, the food was average, the service was good (especially for handling a large party), and the atmosphere was young and lively. I was able to try three dishes here - the tuna tartare appetizer, the Cast Iron Ribeye Steak, and the Crispy Asian Short Ribs. - The tuna tartare was decent but the quality of the tuna was not anything worth noting. The dish came with crispy yuca chips, which sounded great but the consistency wasn't light and crispy like I expected it to be and the taste didn't complement the tuna in any notable fashion. - The ribeye was good quality and cooked exactly how I requested. It came with jumbo asparagus that was delicious and some crispy garlic potatoes that were pretty much as described except partially burnt due to being served on a hot skillet. - The Asian short ribs were not my entree but I had a decent portion of my friend's and all I can say is that I wish I'd ordered it myself. The juicy short ribs along with a mixture of rice, pickled vegetables, and red cabbage made for a yummy asian inspired dish. *Kudos to our server for helping us hide the cake we brought in for our friend. She had the cake sliced for us in the back and brought it out with candles at the end of our meal.* read more

Not my first time here but my first review for this place. I can tell it gets busy on the weekends so make a reservation. I had the prosciutto and fig pizza (ask for meat sauce thank me later) and their lunch 5oz burger with the combo sauce. Gotta say lunch here was great. Gf and I left full and satisfied. What a welcome addition to Merrifield. I have been to the Chinatown and Barracks Row locations several times and I must say, I like this place better because of the friendly service and accessibility. We ordered a simple greens to share, meat pizza and I had to try the bisque. Everything was delicious. Drink selection was great. Will be back soon and often! Too bad the wait times are long and painful, but at least you can look around the shops while you wait, they text you so you don't have to carry around a buzzer or stay close to the vicinity. read more
