Order an hour late and incorrect. The delivery man tried to convince me that a box of bruschetta was actually the eggplant pizza I had ordered. Called the restaurant, and the person who answered said they would get this sorted out and call me right back within a few minutes. Over 40 minutes later and I finally called again. Only then was I informed my pizza was not being made at all and that I would receive a refund. He said he had sent the refund through GrubHub and it just hadn't gone through. But sure enough, not even a minute after the call and I see the refund show up. It became clear they were hoping I would not call back and they could keep their money. Both the delivery man and the person on the phone tried to cast blame on each other, with neither one accepting any responsibility. In all, the people who run this place are not only poor and lazy restauranteurs, but deceitful persons of low character. read more

To be frank, the deal is awesome. $25 for appetizer, entree for two, and sodas, and it started off swimmingly with delicious complimentary garlic knots and pizza pieces. We ordered the clam bake for our appetizer but it turned out to be almost inedible.. Not fresh at all. Really stinky. For the entree round, my mother ordered the fruti di mare and I ordered the chicken romero. It's too bad that neither the pizzas nor pastas count as an entree. Judging by their marinara sauce and bread quality (plus other reviews), the pizzas sound like Matese's forte. It's also extremely unfortunate that we ordered everything at once; had we known the quality of their seafood from the clam bake, we really wouldn't have ordered a seafood pasta. The chicken romero was decent - soft and well seasoned, but the artichoke was too sour (obviously canned), and there was no panchetta? Huh, I didn't even notice that there was supposed to be until I looked at the menu online! The seafood pasta was ... inedible. The calamari was gummy, the clams were just so so so so terrible, and we barely touched the plate. Obviously, our mistake was ordering seafood in a place that clearly functions more as a pizza joint. Stupid mistake. But seriously, how can you serve seafood like that?! I felt bad for the mother-daughter party behind us who ordered the clam bake after seeing ours. If I ever came back it would be to pick up an order of pizza. Nothing else. For the Groupon, stick with what you know is safe like chicken/eggplant parmesan. *Not included in star rating is the awful experience we had seeing our car getting towed mid meal. The owner, unprompted, thought it necessary to tell us he had a sign not to park there on the door. Our bad, but wouldn't it also be suuuper simple to be like "Hey, make sure to move your car if you parked in the lot!" because it seems like a lot of people get suckered into that anyhow. It was also night time, the business was like 20 minutes away from being closed, and they're all buttfaces because seriously guys! It's a freakin' day away from New Years Eve. read more

bought a groupon for 4 and portion was large enough to feed 5 adults and 2 toddlers - were not stuffed to the brim but definitely enough. I really liked the appetizers - fried calamari and stuffed mushrooms (6) were pretty both pretty yummy. For entree, we got baked salmon (a bit over cooked), chicken parm (yum!!), filet of sole francese (with ziti on the bottom and a bit too lemony/sour for me, but the fish was delicious) and frutti di mare. The clams were really awesome in the frutti di mare but the mussels were quite lacking... in the sense that they were very anemic and non-existent and sandy. There were 3 shrimps and some fish filet. And with the groupon $35, we paid $8 in tax and got it to go, it was an awesome deal. Second time getting food from here - the first time was slightly better but next time will try the shrimp fra diavolo and pizza. Even delivery person said the manager doesn't care about the quality of the food only to get the orders out. Sad but no one seems to care at this place. I have been a fan of Matese Pizzeria, for as long as I can remember. Their pizza is one of the best in the Whitestone/Flushing area. They have the best Sicilian slices that I have ever had. Their Grandma pizza is very flavorful, and their Buffalo Chicken slices are as well. They also make great Hero sandwiches. I had to try this pizza based on the reviews. I had a Sicilian slice and a regular slice. Well, they both sucked. The Sicilian had a very heavy dough that tasted a bit like a zeppoli with sauce and watery cheese on it. But, at least that, because the regular almost had no taste at all. A mere standard issue slice. Wasn't completly horrible so i gave it the extra star. Also, the place looked a bit unsanitary behind the counter; which might explain the "grade pending" window sign from the board of health they have. And they don't serve Coke! I have always passed by this place numerous times so I decided to give it a try and stopped by with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. I ended up being pleasantly surprised. They have a tasty variety of pizzas as well as other things to choose from. We only tried the pizzas and this review is based solely on the various types we tried. The Sicilian slices have just the right amount of tomato sauce, bread and cheese. The sauce isn't too sweet but just right. Cheese is actual mozzarella, the bread is a moderate size as opposed to a thick giant piece that looks out of place like some pizzerias that have massive pieces of bread with bare minimum amounts of cheese and sauce. Plain cheese slices are a normal size with real gooey mozzarella and sauce. They were not overly greasy unlike some other pizzerias. Buffalo chicken slices have chunks of buffalo breaded chicken breast on top with cheese. It is just a little spicy. If you like spicy chicken in general give this a try. Bacon slices have a decent amount of bacon on them. It looks to be of the thick-sliced or slab variety of bacon chopped up. High in calories but everything tastes better with bacon. Grandma slices are hit or miss. At times the sauce is either too sweet or a bit sour. Needs a little improvement. Garlic knots were slightly tough and chewy. They do give you a small container of marinara sauce with your order to go along with them. Service was fast and the people there are friendly. We will be going there again for sure. read more

I LOVE Matese! The food is always good, FRESH, and portions are very generous. They know how to take care of their customers too. I always order online for my husband to pick up and at times he gets a freebie (can of soda, dessert, garlic knots etc) from them.The food is fresh and well prepared. You can tell by looking (and tasting) the food that the person cooking the food KNOW how to cook. Love love Matese. I order from them a few times a week.Their chicken Saltimboca and the Romano is outstanding ( so is the shrimp scampi!!). I have enjoyed all the dishes I have ordered here. It's beyond me that this place only has 3 stars? I just ordered delivery and they were fast and super friendly. Extremely generous portions. I had a grilled chicken Parmesan hero that was incredible in every way. Chicken had an amazing char grilled flavor, toasty bread, perfectly balanced sauce. If I could give this place no stars I would. The pizza is decent but certainly doesn't make up for the level of disrespect shown to their customers; especially a customer who goes there for a slice often as I do. Today I took my young cousin into this pizzeria today for a slice and she had to go to the bathroom. The bathroom was in alignment with the counter (NOT BEHIND THE COUNTER) and it said "Both" not private or anything like that. My cousin went in the bathroom and the worker there was incredibly sarcastic and disrespectful to this young girl saying "you could have asked ya know..I mean go use it now, but you don't just walk into a bathroom in a pizzeria and use it. " (like this was some holy sanctuary) I immediately got into an argument with this disrespectful man. Nowhere does it say private. Tried this place on a groupon and was very pleased. Called in the order and was told the order would be reading in 30-45 min. Arrived 35 later, food was ready, I was greeted by a very charming older gentleman who treated me like I was a regular. The eggplant rollitini appetizer was delicious with a very creamy cheese filling. For the main course we had a pasta w/chicken and broccoli which was very tasty (nice garlc flavor) and also had the pasta primavera with shrimp. Great light creamed red sauce and shrimp were very fresh. Portions were quite large and have enough left over for another meal. Will definately go back. I am back! After a few rough delivery issues, I decided to give them another try as I really liked their food. We placed our order at 6:30 and received it at 7:15. It was hot and delicious. We ordered the lasagna, chicken rollatini, rice balls and salad. It was all fresh and delicious. We went to a friends house last weekend and ordered from them. Again - delicious and fresh. Stuck in traffic for the Whitestone bridge, I wandered through the local streets looking for dinner...I found Matese pizza...I had the Sicilian pie..which was excellent...soft and yeasty on the inside, crisp on the outside, with the right amount of cheese and sauce...and the sauce was flavorful too...the correct balance between sweet and acid...nice tomato flavor and good seasonings. I also on a whim ordered a slice of bbq chicken pie...it was good, but could have been great if they did more than put cubed chicken into bottled bbq sauce. All in all...I'm full and satisfied. My Wife and I stopped into Matese Restaurant last night for dinner. I ordered Shrimp Scampi. My wife ordered Chicken Marsala. We were both amazed at how wonderful the food tasted. The portions were huge. The service was fantastic. A Gentleman by the name of Mark served us. He was so friendly, and accommodating. From now on the only Italian I eat will be from Matese. We also took home a Grandma Pie, which was the best I've ever eaten. I highly recommend Matese in Flushing to everyone. Also they deliver to Fresh Meadows where I reside. All my business will go to Matese. Also Mark told me the owner Joe is the same Gentleman that previously owned Barones Pizza in Downtown Flushing. I always got my Pizza from Barones back in the day. Update: ordered again (from grub hub) and got the pasta special: spaghetti puttanesca ( ive had way better but decent; missing the anchovie, which is what makes it what it is, and no red pepper flakes. It should have been cooked al dente not soft) and fettuccini alfredo ( good and creamy but could/should have had some cheese in it). The pasta was HOT and you could tell it was just made. Disappointment on the bread that was supposed to be garlic bread, but came as a plain loaf of bread. Nice italian salad with black olives and giardiniera veggies. Dressing tasted bottled. Delivery was 10 mins early. Driver forgot the soda, apologized, and came back with it in five mins. Awesome. Cheesecake very sweet and didnt taste like cheese. Crust tasted a little undercooked. I dont know if its store made or not. Im giving the extra star this time because the food was way better than the gross pizza. They have good coupons so I will probably try them again. read more
