I ordered through Grubhub for the first time a few days ago. It was an early Sunday morning and Matese was the only pizza spot that was open. I ordered the following: Large special pie: the crust/dough was undercooked, garlic overload and also partly raw. Lobster Bisque: it was warm at best and had a serious frozen after taste--lets be real, it wasn't homemade. House salad: wilted iceberg lettuce and had a huge inner wedge piece in it so, it was 1/3 less of a salad i would've gotten plus, the "lemon vinaigrette" was essentially rancid, red wine vinegar. Beef patty: it's just heating up a frozen patty -- nothing wrong there. I notified GH and told them I was extremely unhappy with my service. With tax and tip it came out to $49.00--i completely overpaid for mediocre pizza, at best. The manager of the restaurant refused to do a redelivery or even offer a partial refund. I've never sent back food nor have I ever try to cheat my way through a free meal. You lost a genuine customer who's probably tried every pizza spot in Flyshing at least 5 times. My son loves pizza so I find myself ordering it at least 4 times a month. I dont want my review to put you in ruins, just want the manager to open his eyes and provide a good customer experience as you're a neighborhood spot and we live in the neighborhood! I called back and was yelled at by the person who was on the phone who said yo you keep calling I have you on hold for a reason. On my recent trip to NYC, I was really craving some good New York pizza. As a self-proclaimed pizza snob, I'm glad that I wasn't disappointed after eating here. Pros: -The pizza, obviously. It was cooked perfectly, and was made with some really delicious bread. Plus it came out relatively fast. -The little pepperoni bites that we got as a side were really good as well. I highly recommend the tomato sauce that they give you to dip them in as it adds just the right amount of flavor. - Nice employees, with good personalities. Wow. Love at first bite. I ordered delivery 1 minute before they stopped taking orders, and I still received a bomb and perfectly al dente spaghetti w/ puttanesca. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Tomatoes in the sauce, lots of olives and capers, and fresh parsley for garnish yum! The side salad I ordered was also super crisp and fresh despite being one of the last orders of the night (no soggy, wilty, or brown veg + plump olives). My meal also came with complimentary bread of choice. I got the Italian bread thinking it would be a couple of slices, but ended up with a whole hero sized loaf. I'm still taken back at the al dente pasta, many "Italian" spots that are closer to me I order from come super well done. Will definitely be ordering from here again soon!! read more

3 stars for food. (-2) stars for service. I don't know how this place stays in business with such anemic and apathetic service. I came in at 530PM to place a to go order. Grilled chicken with broccoli rabe and baked filet of sole. It took 75 minutes for my order to be prepared. After inspecting my order, I see that while I do have one order of grilled chicken with broccoli rabe, I also have another order of chicken over pasta, and an order of salmon (not sole). I truly hope that whomever is in charge of this place makes some changes for the better. I will certainly never come back here again, nor will I ever recommend it for any reason, which is truly their loss as I felt their food was pretty decent. Matese is a small neighborhood pizzeria, they do have tables to dine in. I came today using a Groupon and it was a great deal! We got fried zucchini for appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 sodas. For entrees we had penne alfredo and chicken scarapiello all was so good! The staff at Matese was friendly and welcoming. Other places at like they don't like Groupons that they choose to sell. Not here, they make you feel right at home. Matese even started us of with garlic knots, I think that's a nice touch. I'm in the area often so I will return Groupon or not. read more

Im a person who never writes reviews but this one is extremely warranted. I'm a 3 month old customer who recently discovered this pizzaria. I want to start off by saying the most important factor of this review. THE PIZZA IS AMAZING! I quite literally order their grandma pie once a week because its honestly addicting. The fresh mozzarella is a beautiful touch to an already delicious, crispy pizza. I sometimes accompany my order by a regular pie and let me tell you that its delicious too. We ordered through Slice and were extremely disappointed. Not only with Slice which was unable to correct the situation but with Matese for they sad attempt to make amends. Out of an order of 5 items they got two of them incorrect. Both were missing items including a pasta dish which should have included vegetables and meat where they forgot the meat. This item was over $17 and Matese only offered a refund of $5 which I feel didn't cover for the missing item for this dish let alone the mistake on a second dish which was also missing an item. We haven't ordered from this place in a long time and never plan to order from them again. We use to order from this restaurant regularly many years ago but the food quality and portion size have gone down hill. In the area and decided to get some food. Original was on the way to another restaurant but saw the outdoor seating here and decided it was a nice day and came here instead. Everyone was nice and got our food within minutes. Restaurant is empty as indoor dining isn't available. The pizza was a 7/10 prices is a 2/10 professional 8/10. I was very shocked when bill came to $9.50 for 2 slices. I understand business is down due to covid but that is highway robbery. For $10 you can get a entire pie. Have to admit, I wasn't so impressed with their Groupon deal when I first got it bc turns out some of their menu prices have increased so there were a few price surcharges for some of their appetizers and entrees and that wasn't properly reflected on the Groupon website/online menu. HOWEVER, after we picked up the food we realized just how generous the portions are and it's well worth the full price for each item! Each dish is also delicious and cooked to perfection; some of the appetizers are big enough to be stand alone entrees! They also accidentally gave us someone else's order when we went to pick up ours and we didn't notice until we got home. We didn't touch the food and offered to have them come pick it up or to exchange for our order (cancelling ours instead) but instead they insisted on sending us our own order by delivery and letting us keep the other order on the house. Warning - dangerous, threatening driver. The driver, after refusing to come up to my apartment, screamed profanities at me after I gently questioned why he couldn't park his car for a prepaid $10 tip. He then threatened to attack me. I've ordered twice since the shut down to support a local business, and last week Mark told me they were extremely busy, since they are one of the only businesses open in the area. Well, today I ordered another pizza, and when I arrived, there was a sign that clearly read "No $12 Pizza", and another that read "No coupons". This is a clear case of price gouging. Avoid at all costs. Negatives: Using the Groupon, we purchased a pizza, salad, and tomato caprese. I LOVE pizza, even bad pizza - but this pizza was so awful it was unedible. Not only was the crust soggy, but there was so much garlic on it that our mouths were burning from the first bite. I really love matese! They always have really good deals for pizza, heroes, pasta.... you name it! I've had a lot of different ny pizza and this one is pretty decent. One of my favorites is the Sicilian.. the pie is HUGE definitely well worth it! The regular pie is also really good and super cheesy, just the way I like it! Their marinara sauce is my favorite. Just the right amount of garlic!! Whenever I order garlic knots I'm always dunking those babies all the way into the bottom of the cup haha! Surprisingly they also delicious Buffalo wings. Came here many times. I had groupons on a few occasions and its well worth it. its delicious. Portions are huge and the staff is also very helpful. One time I did not like what I ordered and the manager switched it without a question. Parking can be a bit hard but overall worth it. Highly Underrated! The Grandmas pizza here is 6 stars. Since the straight up triangle NYC slice has the same dimensions Its easy to compare. Grandmas are all different; all that's certain is they're square, and the sauce SHOULD have garlic and basil making it far superior in my view to the straight up NYC slice. Matese's Grandmas is excellent, with more garlic and basil then most. It's also bigger, I can usually eat 4 Grandmas slices for a meal but here only 3. I should add: I always order with extra cheese and mushroom. I also don't pay close attention to prices anymore, it's pizza. Back in the day this shit mattered, have to decide whether to have beer or cigarettes or food. And... how many quarters will be leftover for Street Fighter 2??? The Grandmas alone is what SHOULD give this 30 year old landmark an average of 4 stars. I'm something of a local expert on Grandmas slices, since most places have their own style. My husband and I have been ordering from Matese for the past two years. Mark has always treated us very nicely. Today we decided to order from there and we both recognized that there was a new girl working there. She was very sweet/polite and she told us when she answered the phone that it was her second day. She took or orders down and read it back to us But then the owner joe took the phone from her and was very rude to her. The girl just wanted to make sure she had the right order down. And of course she did. I just hope that the bosses there learns how to treat his employees. After he was done talking to me and my husband I told joe to hand the phone back to her. I told her she was doing a great job and to know her worth.I felt bad for that girl because you can tell she was trying to make a good impression.
