The food and atmosphere were great, but the service could be better. Felt like having REAL sushi and found this spot walking. No wait to be seated and the staff seemed friendly enough. There was a lot to choose from so we ordered a Bento Box as a way to sample a few items. Everything was fresh and was presented beautifully. Our order came with miso soup + salad. Main issue with service was that literally every item came out at once and when the food came out no one really checked on us throughout the meal. Also, the chef low key shamed us for asking about the raw items in the box. If you look on the menu its the chef's choice so don't you think the chef should share what he chose?! I ordered a 3 item bento box with Sashimi, California Roll and Katsu Chicken. The place is only open for take out so upon picking up I checked my items in the car. No Miso soup. I go back in to ask and they (sushi maker, hostess and cook) told me it wasn't included with the bento box. Weird cause it clearly says it's included. Honestly shook that it took me nearly a year of living in Vallejo to finally try this place. I've been passing by fairly often to go to Planet Fitness, but never had the time until today. Perfect sushi getaway for students on the island. Space was so much bigger than I had anticipated. My friend and I ordered takeout expecting it to be a long a wait, but we were in and out within 15 minutes! It is definitely not a surprise that the Matsuri roll was fan favorite since thats the name of the restaurant and my favorite now, as well. I also enjoyed the titanic roll (off the menu), which was very similar to the Matsuri with main ingredients soft shell crab, salmon, cucumber, avocado, masago, green onions. This review is based on the Love Bella roll alone. I just ate it for the first time and came straight here lol. It is the perfect combination of tastes that I love: crunchy shrimp tempura, buttery soft salmon, tangy sliced lemon, and the delicious mildly spicy orange sauce on top. 2.9 This is probably the order where they thought no one would notice. I normally go to this restaurant because it's the closest spot for sushi in the area. The serving sizes are good, they are pretty true to a Japanese meal, but the price is slightly overpriced for the size of the servings. For this reason I try not to have cravings for sushi, even if they only come once in a while. MY visit today, however...seems to be the time when they thought I wouldn't notice the aging tuna. Not fresh at all. Probably that time of the month between getting fresh stuff and getting rid of overstock. Which I know happens and is a challenge for restaurants, but it's just a bummer that one of the better liked restaurants in Vallejo would put fish in that was already discolored...still edible, but just barely. I won't NOT go back...I just hope that this is not a frequent practice at one of the only sushi spots in the area. read more

Matsuri is solid sushi joint, great for Friday night dinners! The customer service is pretty good, and so is the food. I usually order a sashimi roll or the dragon or rainbow roll, and it's very filling. When I'm in the mood for something warm, a bowl of chicken udon is the way to go. The happy hour is from 4:30-6pm M-F and it is a pretty good menu. Gives you the option to try a lot without spending a lot of money. The food here is just okay. I got take out here once, and they got my order wrong. I asked for the Philadelphia roll, and it ended up being just salmon and rice. The lion king (I think) was good. The tempura wasn't worth getting. The ikura wasn't great. I tried to call to order take out again a couple weeks ago. They told me to hold right when they picked up. I waited through about 3 minutes of silence before hanging up. Called again and line was busy. I waited five minutes and called again. Line was still busy. I ended up getting sushi somewhere else. I drove by the restaurant on my way to the other place, and there were maybe 3 or 4 cars in the lot. Maybe they were busy when I called, but it just pissed me off. Edit: I've since eaten here and gotten take out a couple more times recently and have been pleasantly surprised. Service in restaurant was average. Price was average for sushi, and presentation was nice. Take out has been much easier. The people over the phone have been very nice, and have been offered me water if I wait there which is a nice touch. read more

I was told that "Vallejo has no good sushi". I really honestly have believed this for a full year of living here and quite a few stunningly crappy sushi meals. When I passed Matsuri with the man, he said that this place used to be amazing and now it has fallen off (according to his friends since he is allergic to seafood--what does he know right?). My BFF and I were desperate for sushi on a ladies night so we figured, heck, we never went there before, so we can just judge it for what it is and it probably won't kill us? Well I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! We had 6 of the oysters on a half shell which came in an amazing ponzu-like sauce, green onion, tobiko, and ginger. It might have been one of the most amazing fresh oyster dishes that I have ever had. Then we ordered some of the more creative rolls on the menu. The Tiger Eye was a dream of ika stuffed with shiso leaf and fish. We also had a rice-less deep fried roll that had a generous portion of tuna inside. We also had another creative roll that was fantastic. Unlike much of the subpar sushi in vallejo it wasn't mountains of rice with low quality ingredients. The rice was nicely prepared and in proportion to ingredients. Care was taken so each bite had just the right balance of flavors which makes me quite a fan! I'm impressed for "no good sushi in Vallejo". I would totally take friends and family here! Claims of over priced? Only if your frame of reference are the crappy to-go sushi places or all you can eat sushi places that I am shocked have not killed anyone near by. I thought for the quality, the food here was a reasonable price. Side note, the noodle soups other people were getting looked divine and there were some really interesting things I want to try on the chalk board behind the sushi bar. It's not Jiro Dreams of Sushi, but it will more than satisfy a sudden sushi craving! My only criticism is it was a leisurely dinner, but this can be a good thing depending on your mood and company. I appreciated that the waitresses were friendly and always kept our hot tea refilled and would check in as we were waiting for the next dish to come out. Now the first time I went here with my gyrlfriend we enjoyed quite a few rolls on a Friday evening, I neglected to realize that it was indeed Happy Hour and they had a great special going on for BBQ oysters. I've since learned to read the specials menu as well, lol Came here a second time and boy oh boy, the sushi was even better. I love to try new things that i'm not allergic to, but I've since found out that I am allergic to fish eggs ::shakeshead:: and i have to be careful what I order and make sure to get no fish eggs. I've been coming here for 5 years now and this spot is the only place in Vallejo I've found that has bomb sushi and is always consistent with quality, freshness, and flavor. Although this restaurant is located in the older and dangerous part of Vallejo, it is definitely worth the trip. This restaurant must be commended for its ambiance. It is intricately decorated in a sophisticated manner. The sushi bar area is huge and the walls have huge flat screen tvs. The best part about this restaurant?? It has an extensive wine menu! Not too many sushi restaurants carry wine. The quality of the food is excellent; the raw fish is fresh and the food is delicious. And yes, it is a bit pricey but we must always remember that quality = $$$$! My only gripe about his place (besides that it is located in the ghetto part of Vallejo) is that the service may be a bit slow. However, although the service is slow the staff is still very friendly and accommodating. My recommendation? Order the Sashimi dinner, a rainbow roll and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. read more

Hands down the best place to get sushi in the Vallejo area. I just moved here and have been trying to find a decent sushi place only to leave severely disappointed after every place I've checked out. I don't know why people like the fast food places so much around here that makes a complete mockery of sushi. Their quality is horrible and price isn't even cheaper! WHY!? After all the disappointment I've endured I honestly wasn't expecting much here. I've started judging sushi restaurants by first seeing how well they make tekka maki. The tekka maki here had clean and straight cuts, the tuna was fresh, and surprisingly of a more fatty (and expensive) melt-in-your-mouth cut. The shape was not the traditional squarish shape... but now I'm just being overly critical aren't I? Okay, so tekka maki wasn't bad. I also ordered uni, sake, ika, and amaebi. All were pretty good, rice was a good texture, sushi was good temperature. Looks like this will be my sushi spot from now on. read more

This review is coming from someone who has been to Japan. I think the food here is mediocre--not bad, not amazing. I had the chicken katsu bento during lunchtime, and it was okay. I have had better chicken katsu in Japan and America, but it was by no means bad, just mediocre. It was under $10 with tax (tip not included). It also had quite a few sides including one gyoza, some California rolls, rice, pickled something, and a salad. The only thing I disliked was the salad. The dressing was extremely watery; it was just running off the lettuce, so I did not really touch it.. Is this the best Japanese place in Vallejo? Maybe. I have only been Suruki's, and I think Suruki's a 1.5/5. I do not know much about Matsuri's sushi, but I am sure I will go back and try it. I will give Matsuri's a 2.5/5. Most will think to round up to 3, but I will keep it at 2 for Yelp's rating scale. read more

The restaurant has an authentic Japanese atmosphere that we like. We were pleased to learn that we came in time for happy hour discounts. Hot sake is only $3.50, a variety of items are on the happy hour menu and the Maki sushi - which are already reasonably priced - are 15% off until 6:30 pm. The "Oyster Katsu" appetizer was delicious... so much so that we ordered a second! The waiter recommended "Pink Lady," which is shrimp tempura topped with crab, and Tobiko; although it didn't have a pink appearance, it was attractive and delicious. The "Tiger Eye" maki, made of baked salmon wrapped in squid, had a fresh taste enhanced by the shiso leaf inside. The "49er Maki" made with hamachi and maguro was simple but tasty. However, we were quite disappointed by the "Chicken Karage" as they truly looked and tasted like tiny (and terrible), chickenless scraps of batter dribbles one strains out of the oil. The "Asian Fries," which are fried taro and sweet potato, came with a very bland "garlic" aioli. I am particular about wasabi and noticed that the wasabi it was not as fresh as I like it (wasabi loses its punch when exposed to air too long). When I asked for fresher wasabi, they wanted to charge me an additional $3.50 for it. Outrageous; never before have I been told I would be charged extra for wasabi. For this, I have to downgrade them on service. I do plan to return. Unfortunately at this point, they only earned two stars from me. My rating may improve if the service and food are better during my next visit. read more

Two of the three times they cancelled my order with no explanation. What's so hard about fulfilling the order when someone else is doing the delivery? Our server was awesome. Super sweet and helpful and always happened to be there right when we needed her. I thought the menu was a little confusing because they had names of things that I just had no idea what they meant and it didn't define it. Like who knew ebi tempura meant shrimp?!? I got the pink lady which was absolutely delicious. I didn't care so much for the dragon roll and their spicy tuna hand roll just was not pleasing to my taste buds. They smashed it up completely like I was an 80 year old woman with no teeth or dentures and the color was completely off. Upsides: beautiful restaurant inside, food came out quickly and service was great. However, the sushi was a-ok. I'll probably be back to try some other rolls out. All the rolls we ordered came out pretty fast considering we came during dinner about 10 min (they all came at the same time) the tuna and salmon were like butter, the fish was so fresh..not usually a scallop person but even they were good. The sauce complimented each roll really well (not alot of sauce like other places.) My daughter ended up getting udon and even she finished the whole bowl..it was a pretty big bowl that she could have easily shared with my husband or I but she must have enjoyed it that much.
