I normally have another mechanic I go to, but he was busy and I needed an oil change/inspection before a trip. Called like 8-10 auto repair shops within the vicinity around 4pm, these guys were one of the few who actually answered the phone. The lady who answered sounded chill and helped me out quickly with getting an appointment scheduled. When I arrived for my appointment, I was met with a chill dude named Alex who was straight forward, informative, and just let me know what I need to know without pushing any extra stuff on me. Prices were fair too and they even gave me a little first time customer gift. If you don't wanna stress or be anxious about scheduling and getting your car checked out, then I'd say this place is worth going to.

About a month later, I found out the issue was actually related to a recall. That meant I could have had the entire repair done at the dealership for free. What makes it worse is that they clearly knew something was up they even told me they had to contact the dealer for information. Because of that, I ended up paying a couple THOUSAND dollars I didn't need to spend. In hindsight, they were aware it was likely a recall and didn't disclose it properly. Very shady experience definitely go somewhere else.

UPDATE: What I discovered after posting my original review made this experience considerably worse…read more My family brought vehicles to Gustafson Brothers for three generations--my grandparents, my mother, and then me. We kept supporting them because they are a longtime Huntington Beach business. That history is exactly why this feels like such a betrayal of trust. I paid $631.30 after bringing in my van for a long-crank/hard-start problem. The invoice included $182.50 for a crank/no-start investigation and stated: "The 'long crank' has been eliminated." It had not been eliminated. I returned because the same problem remained. Gustafson then identified a weak fuel pump--the same component I had told them from the beginning that I suspected. I tried to resolve this reasonably. I did not demand a large refund. I asked them to apply some compensation toward basic fluid maintenance the van needed. They refused. I later discovered another serious problem with the work. The invoice charged $19.98 for positive and negative battery terminals and $182.50 in labor to install them: $202.48 total. Less than a month later, my van suddenly lost electrical power while I was in Long Beach. When I opened the hood, one newly installed terminal was so loose I could move it by hand. Tightening it did not make it clamp securely to the battery post. The other newly installed terminal was also loose, and wiring had come loose at the connection. This became a recurring loss-of-power problem. I repeatedly had to improvise temporary connections just to finish trips because the terminals would not securely fit the battery posts. I am not accusing anyone of doing this intentionally. I have no evidence of intent. I do not need to speculate. The workmanship I personally found is troubling enough. If a professional repair shop charges $182.50 in labor to install two $9.99 battery terminals, expecting both connections to remain secure for more than a month is not an unreasonable standard. The van's transmission later failed. I am not claiming Gustafson caused that failure. I cannot establish that, and I want this review to remain factual. But after already paying for an unresolved diagnosis and then dealing with poorly fitted battery connections, the added financial damage was devastating. There is one final detail prospective customers should know. After my negative Yelp review appeared, the owner contacted us. My impression was that the conversation focused more on what could be done about the review than on beginning with an apology, understanding what had gone wrong, or correcting the work to a professional standard. After three generations of family patronage, that was perhaps the most revealing part. I did not expect special treatment. I expected competent work, fair treatment, and accountability. What I received was: * $631.30 paid. * $419.75 in labor. * $182.50 for a long-crank investigation that the invoice said had "eliminated" the problem. It had not. * $182.50 in labor to install $19.98 in battery terminals. * Both new connections loose less than a month later after the van lost electrical power. * A reasonable request for compensation through needed maintenance refused. Three generations of loyalty ended with me. Get another estimate. Keep every invoice. Get every promise in writing. Inspect the work before leaving--or avoid the expense and aggravation altogether.

It's actually been a few months since I got service done at Matt's but I've been meaning to post a review. I can't say enough good things about this shop. Clean, precise, honest, fair and prompt. I brought in my son's 2015 Tiguan for an annual check before a long road trip. Matt inspected it top to bottom. Charged a good price for a brake job, which I knew it needed and found a few things that I didn't know about and took care of them. But the really heroic thing was that he found a very slight coolant leak and told me the water pump was probably going to go bust in a month or two (a perennial VW problem and a really pricey repair). He said he could fix it but he suggested taking it to a dealer first to see if they could replace it under warranty, since we had one month to go. I did, and the dealer fixed it no charge. I didn't know better, so Matt could have easily charged me hundreds to replace the pump, but he's a good guy who treats customers right and *really* knows these cars. I won't go anywhere else. read more

Came a few Saturdays ago around 2 pm, happened to be walking to Flashpoint next door and saw the gate closed and a Blue Golf R sitting outside and the door open. I am in the process of moving here from the state of Texas and walked in , was greeted by Arthur who was about to close for the weekend. I asked a few questions about emissions / smog. He did not rush me and gave me complete explanations for my Golf R back in texas. He explained on how to legally modify my car here and what to keep on and what to take off. I feel this shop is 100% trustworthy with fair pricing compared to other specialty VW/Audi Shops around. These guys have earned my future business when I move here. read more

I dropped off my car 1/9/2023 for motor mounts, and high flow fuel pump replacement. Matt, and his team went above and beyond. They keep me updated with the progress, and let me know my warranty was covering the repairs. To find a independent shop that deals with warranty companies isn't that common, so when Matt said he did, I knew I found the right place. I strongly recommend them if you have a VW or Audi. They are full of knowledge, and do quality work. From now on Matt will be the only one working on my Audi. Thank you again for everything. read more

The only guys I trust with my 2010 VW GTI! I'm always concerned that I'll be ripped off going to a dealership, so I decided to try out a local spot in town for my scheduled maintenance. I'm so glad I did! Most recently, I had an issue which caused my GTI to go into limp mode. I feared the worst. I live in Oceanside and made 4 trips to Matt's for brake lights staying on. First trip, need brake light switch. Second, not switch, need ECU. Third, not EU need another electrical part. Forth, not that part. Matt showed me the fix was a fuse in the worng location. After 20 hours of travel, wait time and fuel Matt's charge was $350. Matt worked on my car. Also, last trip he charged me $45 for a 10 minute head light adjustment. that's bad business! read more

I'm very impressed with Metric and would highly recommend them…read more I brought in my 2015 Audi S3 for an AMS intercooler, CSF radiator, and replacement grille before the summer heat. I chose these parts because they were advertised to all drop in to place with no fit issues. Thought about doing it myself, but it's my daily so I couldn't afford to have the car apart if I got stuck I shopped it all over LA/OC to make sure it was done right. Metric had very good reviews, the best price, and said they could turn it around same day. It's far away from home, but work takes me to the area often, so I picked a good day and went with them for it. At drop-off, they were already skeptical it would be as simple as advertised, and they were right. Neither the intercooler nor radiator fit cleanly, and they shared photos of just how off it really was. They weren't surprised they didn't fit as advertised and they recommended Unitronic instead for these parts (if you're considering it). They had to do a lot of trimming and shaving but still had it ready by the end of the day. The price increase was very reasonable given the extra labor. Despite all the pain the results have been great. All heat soak is effectively gone, and I can especially tell on longer drives where I could feel the car pulling timing. Highly recommend the upgrade and going to Metric. Just make sure you consult them on parts first so there's a smooth install. Despite the distance I'd definitely look to bring the car back for another install.

AVOID THIS SHOP -- Dishonest and Predatory I brought my 1976…read morePontiac Firebird in knowing exactly what was wrong -- a transmission accumulator O-ring leak. I told Adrian Ciejka specifically what I needed done and informed him I had already replaced the filler tube O-ring, installed a Moroso transmission pan gasket, and replaced the speedometer gear and O-ring myself. The fluid visible on the inspection cover was clearly seepage from the accumulator O-ring -- exactly what I told him before he even looked at it. Instead of listening, he claimed the filler tube was also leaking and then told me the transmission would need to be dropped and the crossmember removed just to replace the accumulator O-ring. This is factually incorrect -- the accumulator on a TH350 transmission is accessible from the outside without dropping the transmission or removing the crossmember. Either he doesn't know basic transmission repair on a common GM unit, or he was deliberately misleading me to justify a full reseal at $400+. When I declined and asked to pick up my car, he charged me $180 just to remove an inspection cover -- a 10 minute job with no upfront disclosure of the diagnostic fee and no discussion of cost before proceeding. To make it worse, I dropped the car off with the transmission fluid low and picked it up overfilled by half a quart. An overfilled transmission leaks more visibly -- a well known trick used by dishonest shops to justify expensive repairs the customer doesn't need. I paid $60 in Lyft fees to get there and back, $180 for nothing, and left with my car unrepaired and the fluid level tampered with. Classic car owners beware. This shop does not listen to the customer, fabricates unnecessary repairs, and will upsell you on work you don't need. Find someone honest who will do the job you ask for. This is not that shop.
