Was looking for a basic oil change for my VW Tiggy - and Matt's shop came highly recommended. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Gave them a call, spoke to friendly Mike - who told me to bring my car in anytime.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They are located in Huntington Beach near the Central Library, off Ellis/Gothard. The driveway was packed - at first, I was iffy about driving in because there wasn't really a place to park. Called Mike back and he said to just pull into the driveway. While there were cars in there for other projects - one of their bays is dedicated to quicker services like oil changes. Having gone to a few independent VW/Euro specialists in the area - while great, there were some nuances about each of the other places that didn't seem great. So my search continued - and that's how I came across Matt's A Plus Auto Care. Matt's shop comes highly recommended by various online VW social media groups (FB, Reddit, Yelp). Before utilizing them for a major service, I always try to see how they handle something as basic as oil changes - and whether there are any issues following that. The oil change service for Tiggy came out to be a little over $100 (no charge if you use a debit card, 3% charge if you use a credit card). This is a great value compared to the stealership where oil changes cost almost $150. Matt's shop has a comfortable lobby with wifi where you can work if needed. I didn't find out until it was almost time to leave that there was another seating area overlooking the service bays. I had a friendly chat with another VW driver while waiting in the lobby. Other than the super tight parking/full driveway - I'll definitely stop by Matt's for Tiggy's future services. I believe his shop also handles pretty much everything else bumper-to-bumper for your VW beyond oil changes. Matt's shop is frequently referenced online for carbon cleanings, tunes, among other adjustments for your VW. A well maintained VW is a happy VW!

The secretary Arthur converted my R8 into an A8, not sure how he did that or why since I didn't ask him to do that. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great service I'd give 10 stars if I could[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I live in Baldwin Park and make the drive to Huntington Beach to take my cars to Matt's. If you want amazing and honest service, bring your car to Matt's A Plus Car Care. He repaired my Atlas and I asked him if I needed other services and he was honest and said that I did not need them at the moment. Prices there are also very reasonable. Also, a lot of shops are very dirty and messy. His shop is super clean.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Huge props to Matt and his team.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The "A Plus" in the name is spot on and earned. Excellent work, great customer service, and tons of knowledge. Brought my '23 Tiguan for a APR flash for my first appointment and [[HIGHLIGHT]]Matt answered every single one of my many questions and reaffirmed that I made the right choice bringing my car to them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even recommended supporting upgrades to get the most out of my flash.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Second appointment I brought in the Tiguan again to have some H&R springs installed and once again Matt and his team knocked it out efficiently and had it done ahead of what they estimated and to make it better the pricing was great. Super happy to have found Matt's and will continue to bring my Tiguan and future vehicles. Matt's 5 star rating is there for a reason and I will have no worry recommending them to friends and family.

Found this shop after cross-referencing Reddit, Yelp, and Google. I was looking for a solid, independent garage for my Audi A5's 20k service after getting quoted $700+ at the dealership. Called a few times to ask about oil changes and the 20k service and was able to talk to both Matt and Mike. I felt they were honest people with reasonable and transparent pricing so ended up scheduling with them a few days later. Matt was the one who ended up working on my car and it took 3-4 hours or maybe shorter. I decided to wait there and work on my laptop on one of the two small couches they have in the front but I think most decided to drop off and come back later to pick up. My final cost was around $200, which I thought was very reasonable. Matt was very personable and knowledgeable and I believe he did good work. It's always difficult to find a reliable and honest shop for the first time but I think this place is a great one if you have an Audi or VW. It's a bit of a drive for me but I'll still be coming back for future services!

Ask the Community - Matt’s A Plus Car Care

How much does a smog check cost?

Do you service Audi? Brakes, rotors, suspension?

Hi Steve, we service brakes and suspension for all Audi and Vw models. Call the shop and we can give you a estimate or come by the shop and we can do a brake pad inspection and measure the remaining pad life for free.

Hi, I have a 2013 Audi S4 with 62k miles. I have not performed the dsg service or transmission flush. Do you recommend servicing the dsg or wait until 70k?

Hi Max, The dsg service is recommended every 35k for your Audi B8.5 S4. As long as the first…

UPDATE: What I discovered after posting my original review made this experience considerably worse…read more My family brought vehicles to Gustafson Brothers for three generations--my grandparents, my mother, and then me. We kept supporting them because they are a longtime Huntington Beach business. That history is exactly why this feels like such a betrayal of trust. I paid $631.30 after bringing in my van for a long-crank/hard-start problem. The invoice included $182.50 for a crank/no-start investigation and stated: "The 'long crank' has been eliminated." It had not been eliminated. I returned because the same problem remained. Gustafson then identified a weak fuel pump--the same component I had told them from the beginning that I suspected. I tried to resolve this reasonably. I did not demand a large refund. I asked them to apply some compensation toward basic fluid maintenance the van needed. They refused. I later discovered another serious problem with the work. The invoice charged $19.98 for positive and negative battery terminals and $182.50 in labor to install them: $202.48 total. Less than a month later, my van suddenly lost electrical power while I was in Long Beach. When I opened the hood, one newly installed terminal was so loose I could move it by hand. Tightening it did not make it clamp securely to the battery post. The other newly installed terminal was also loose, and wiring had come loose at the connection. This became a recurring loss-of-power problem. I repeatedly had to improvise temporary connections just to finish trips because the terminals would not securely fit the battery posts. I am not accusing anyone of doing this intentionally. I have no evidence of intent. I do not need to speculate. The workmanship I personally found is troubling enough. If a professional repair shop charges $182.50 in labor to install two $9.99 battery terminals, expecting both connections to remain secure for more than a month is not an unreasonable standard. The van's transmission later failed. I am not claiming Gustafson caused that failure. I cannot establish that, and I want this review to remain factual. But after already paying for an unresolved diagnosis and then dealing with poorly fitted battery connections, the added financial damage was devastating. There is one final detail prospective customers should know. After my negative Yelp review appeared, the owner contacted us. My impression was that the conversation focused more on what could be done about the review than on beginning with an apology, understanding what had gone wrong, or correcting the work to a professional standard. After three generations of family patronage, that was perhaps the most revealing part. I did not expect special treatment. I expected competent work, fair treatment, and accountability. What I received was: * $631.30 paid. * $419.75 in labor. * $182.50 for a long-crank investigation that the invoice said had "eliminated" the problem. It had not. * $182.50 in labor to install $19.98 in battery terminals. * Both new connections loose less than a month later after the van lost electrical power. * A reasonable request for compensation through needed maintenance refused. Three generations of loyalty ended with me. Get another estimate. Keep every invoice. Get every promise in writing. Inspect the work before leaving--or avoid the expense and aggravation altogether.
