I think I mentioned this at other types of restaurants of all cuisines around the world, but if you see older generations of customers in a business, hanging out with each other, chowing down on food or reading the newspaper, you know it's a community staple AND it's gonna be good. There's some seating inside and it's both a small market of imported German and other European goods and foods, as well as a deli where they can fix you a sandwich real quick. We got ourselves a sausage sandwich and a cold cut sandwich and my boyfriend got some cuts to go as well. My boyfriend also got an imported beer and an extra pickle spear. For our side, we got some potato salad. I love potato salad and this was the perfect side. Sandwiches have the perfect toasted level, and isn't dry. The sandwiches here are really good, the menu could use a bit of updating as it was kinda confusing on how to order and I have not been here in years so I kind of forgot how to order correctly. But nonetheless I was able to get my self a pastrami and cornbeef Reuben sandwich with a side of hot German potato salad. The potato salad alone is worth the visit. A friend of mine has been coming to Mattern's for lunch every Saturday afternoon for years. I decided to tag along and try a sandwich. Mattern's is an authentic German deli in east Orange. When you walk in, there is a small dining room on the left with three two seat tables and one four seat table. There are coolers along with wall with a good selection of German beers and other beverages. On the other side of the dining room is a small marketplace with a few aisles of imported goods you probably won't find in most places. The long display case in front has a wide selection of meats, cheeses, and house-made sausages and sides. There is also a cooler in the market section with their house-made sausages pre-packaged and ready to-go. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon during a short lull, so there was no wait. Normally, you take a number and wait to be helped. Among other things, they are known for their Reuben sandwich ($13.99), so that's what I ordered. I'm glad I didn't order a side, because the sandwich was huge. The rye bread is toasted lightly and is stuffed with delicious corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, and the freshest sauerkraut I think I've ever had. I ate the first half and I was pretty stuffed. I thought about taking the second half home, but I ended up gobbling the other half down as well. The sandwich also comes with two slices of dill pickle. Service was friendly, and the sandwiches came out in a timely manner. When we left, there was a line out the door, so it is definitely popular. I'm on a sandwich kick and today I visited Mattern. Its been forever since I've been here, but nothing has changed. It was slow so I didn't have to take a number. When it's busy be sure to grab a number when you enter. My sandwich was delicious along with the pickle slices. My favorite thing is their Bratwurst. Some restaurants serve them and you can get them on German Street at the Orange Street Fair. You can get a variety of meats and cheeses, and several items from the market. Hard to believe I have not reviewed this before, but I don't go that often. Not because of quality, I don't typically get take out deli sandwiches. There are a few seats inside, so it is possible to eat here, but I suspect most folks don't. There is a small grocer section of German and European things, so if you are looking for something you can' get in a supermarket, here is an option. They also have a very good deli selection for meat to take home, but I got a sandwich. It was great. Meat was tasty, the bread was good, the fixins were spot on. Came for the Bockwurst stayed for some amazing sandwiches. Getting ready for NBA BBQ Lil hungry grabbed a Pork chop Sandwich and a Pastrami Reuben. Damn this hidden gem of a Deli serves up some of the best sandwiches. The Pork Chop Sandy was amazing a mustard and Mayo dressing on a super fresh roll some shredded lettuce. Fresh everything makes a difference. The Pastrami Reuben wow melted cheese on perfectly grilled bread just the right amount of sauerkraut and the generous portions of pastrami. Mattern is the jam! This place is no frills, it's just a tiny little store with a few tables and a good selection of German groceries. The people who work here are always friendly and eager to help and answer any questions you have. Their sandwiches are amazing. The fried pork chop is my favorite, my husband loves their rueben. The rolls they use are so delicious. The sandwiches are very large too, we always split one or take 1/2 home for the next day. Their homemade sausages though, are what keep me coming back! Their Fresh Bratwurst and British Bangers are fantastic. Sooooo juicy and flavorful. They have a unique selection, like the Swedish Potato Bratwurst, which is something I had never heard of before - it was interesting to try! I can't wait to purchase more of the varieties they offer. There is a small store that its partially deli woth seat to dine in and small place with shelves that its filled with german products! I checked even their Nutella is labeled as Made in Germany so this place has my heart and definitely i'll back and ill order it from here...I ended up to buy their quality bread and horseradish sauce so i did hit jack pot. The brats were flavorful and perfectly prepared, and the poor boy was stacked with fresh, high-quality meats that you can really taste! I also tried the potato salad, and it was so good! I need to come back and try more things, as well as buy more German products. They don't have an extensive dairy section, but they have sweets, meats, and some other snacks and condiments. They did have the sweet ground mustard I love, as well as bunch of gummies and chocolates. However, they did not have Grießpudding, which is one of my favorites and very, very difficult to find. Unless I was blind and missed it, but it's like how they don't really sell quark here in the States. Get the German potato salad, and have them warm it up. Go grab a German beer from the fridge , don't worry you will pay for it later. Just sit down and enjoy your beer while they prepare your food. Sometimes you will hear some locals who come in all the time talking the shit. They will bring your food out and when you're done devouring it you take your beer and tell the person what sandwich you had. They have some bakery stuff that is ok, schnitzel that are raw, and great hung sausages. Stopped at Mattern this afternoon for our favorite sandwich - a Pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut - YUM!! Their sandwiches are the best around! And as an added bonus, they have an awesome deli with a great selection of sausages, pastrami, deli meats and cheeses. One of our favorite sausages is the Gyulai - which comes in both regular and spicy - both are really good! It's kind of like a slim jim. We like to take it on our road trips along with string cheese and crackers - it's a great on-the-go snack. And if you get a sandwich, be sure to pick up a side to go with your sandwich - my side of choice is the coleslaw, but they also have a good German potato salad.
