If you have psoriasis which can only respond to biologic therapy (very expensive drugs and most dermatologists are not interested in psoriasis or biologic therapy for it), Dr L is one of your exceedingly few choices. He knows a lot about the 21st century treatments for psoriasis. He also can often get you enrolled in a program where these drugs are free or relatively inexpensive. You may have a long wait, or a long distance to travel, but even in Southern California, your options for get-down-to-business treatment I described above are very few! Many clinics seriously dealing with psoriasis won't even give you a first appt for 6+ months! An hour wait after a 110 mile drive is nothing when you consider the alternatives. The 1 star off has to do with his assistant(s) responsible for the paperwork for acquiring the drug - which can be extensive. Too often they ignore it...and repeated calls/reminders are ignored. But, it's a busy office, and it probably is busy because too many dermatologists these days are quacks not interested at all in the treatment of medical dermatologic problems. Dr L is not one of those - so you just have to be patient. read more

Do you want to know what it costs to get a couple of "not suspicious" beauty marks taken off your face? Okay and one off the leg? $1,000 for the 20 minute appointment. I only went to this doctor to have him look at my moles to see if they looked suspicious and according to him none of them really fit the bill, but he took them off anyway to be safe. I can see why he did after I got the bill! He also charged me the same for my son so it was a $2,000 visit. Now I also have an indentation where he removed a mole and red marks where he took off the sun spots in my face. There was no indication they were cancerous. He took them off because I asked about them and that was enough for him to decide to make a few bucks. read more

What a total circus! I just had a visit with the "Doctor". I waited 1.5 hours for a five minute visit. He didn't listen to anything I said regarding my skin condition and symptoms, prescribed me antibiotics which I had mentioned I had taken a month ago and received zero results. He's arrogant, rushed, and the staff is so unprofessional. Something very peculiar must be going on in this office. After waiting for 45 min, two fellow patients stood up and complained that they had been waiting for over an hour. One even said that the same thing happened to him the last time he was there and walked out. They must be triple booking in order to make more money. I've never seen this in any Doctor's office I have been to. This seems to be a very common thread mentioned by reviewers. So all in all I wasted 1.5 hours to leave without a diagnosis. That's right...... he couldn't even tell me what I had. He said he wasn't sure if it was rosacea or eczema. Isn't that why you go to a doctor?! Didn't do the lab work the first time??? Had him remove it a second time about 1 year later. Turned out to be a basil cell carcinoma. Consequently, I have a 1 inch scar in the middle of my face. No record of the first removal. I wonder how many others were missed. read more

I have been going to this doctor for the last four years for skin cancer. I have had it removed twice by Luxenberg and it is back again. I am now going to a surgeon thar performs mohs surgery, which I should have received from the get-go. One job, epic fail. He has also removed several "precancer" leisions on my skin that have become infected and left black scars. Lastly, if you decide to see this doctor, set aside 2-3 hours of wait time. First appointment was made for 515pm and on my way in they pushed it til 6pm when I arrived the suite number was incorrect and couldn't find the office. Once i got the right direction I waited until 7pm to be seen. Doctor wakes me didn't tell me what to expect and bam started getting shots for my alopecia. Painful! And had bruises on my face when the shots were given. I made my other appointment for the following month giving it one more try. Today was my appointment and wanted an earlier appointment since zocdoc app said he was free all day. I called and nope not available. I've been going to Dr. Luxenberg for many years. He has treated me for alopecia and is one of the only doctors who didn't take the attitude of "There is not much we can do." After trying various methods, he was able to get my hair back. He also has treated me for some pre-cancer skin issues (I didn't use sunscreen growing up at the beach!) and for the dark circles under my eyes. I like him because he makes you comfortable, he takes his time with you, and is attentive to my needs. I have recommended him to other friends and they all love him. My only complaint is he only does dermatology/cosmetic medicine. I wish he could be my doctor for everything else I need. A good doctor is like a good mechanic, you keep 'em and let others know how great they are. read more

Dr. Luxenberg should not be practicing. He permanently ruined my nose by carelessly and aggressively digging out a small lump in my nose. After he had finished this sloppy job, he then proceeded to make it "cosmetically pleasing" by scraping and shaving off layers of skin around it. I now have a horrible, shallow, dime-sized scar near the tip of my nose which I doubt can be surgically fixed. He had always been in a rush to remove anything that looked suspicious ... but he had never butchered anything on me before. I will never go back to him. Be smart and stay away from him! read more

I have had lipomas all over my arms and have been extremely self conscious most of my life. They grew and grew and were really painful and I had no idea what they were. I did my research of who to see and Dr. Luxenberg came highly recommended. On the first consultation I was pleased to hear not only were they common but that he would help me. After a 1.5 hr wait we were taken to an exam room where we were immediately horrified at the lack of cleanliness. Used medications on an stand that looks as if never been wiped down. I have to agree with a lot of the reviews here, particularly regarding the wait time. I even called their office 1/2 hr prior to my appointment time asking if the doctor was on schedule (and if I can come in a bit later if he's behind) and they told me he was right on time. It then took me about 1 hr 15 min to be called to go into the patient room, and then another 15 min for the doctor to come in. 1 1/2 hrs of wait time is excessive, especially since I called in advance and was lied to. However, it was hard to find a dermatologist that would make an appointment for me within a week or so for a late afternoon appointment, but I guess they do it by double and triple booking.. I can't review the quality of his work yet, it will have to wait to see how I heal. UPDATE: I healed just fine so I can vouch for the quality of his work. Dr. Matt Luxenberg has been our dermatologist for over twenty years. Because of my sun exposure as a child as well as being a lifeguard and swim instructor for over fifteen years my concerns of skin cancer are increased in my later years! After retirement we moved near to Palm Springs and I had to enroll in Kaiser after being treated by Dr Luxenberg for fourteen years. None of their dermatologists came close to the careful treatment I received from Dr Lux! His skills, manner, experience, compassion, and time given us(my spouse included), in our opinions places him in the highest esteem among medical professionalism that we could ever desire! I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent dermatologist. However, be sure to allow extra time when you go to your appointment because he oftentimes runs late. I don't recomment this dermatologist!!! I made an appointment with Dr. Matthew Luxenberg for an evaluation for facelift. Without asking my permission, Dr. Luxenberg began applying liquid Nitrogen to several places on my face. I see another dermatologist annually, so I know I did not have any skin issues. I did not request dermatological services from Dr. Luxenberg. He did not take any skin samples for analysis. Later I received a bill for $899 for lab services for skin samples. I protested and told the office the claims were incorrect or fraudulent, but the office refused to reduce the bill. I made claims to the California Medical Board and California Fraud Department, but I received no assistance. I am making payments under protest to prevent this claim from going to collection. I do not know why people decide to write bad reviews based on waiting time. Nowadays physicians has to take patients every 10 minutes even if they see them for 30, after that simple delay there will be two patients waiting in line. I have known Dr. Matthew Luxenberg for close to 20 years, and during that time he has been highly consistent, dependable, and trustworthy. I can't think of anything really negative to post here- except that making and keeping appointments is always a challenge for me, but unlike with some medical offices I have been to, it is always worth the time and effort with this doctor. I wish I could have him as my General Practitioner as well. He maintains a top-notch professional demeanor- always dressed well and is in very good physical condition, which to me is a reflection of his dedication and credibility. At the same time he is very pleasant, down to earth, and easy to communicate with. He does a great job making me feel at ease, but I can always see his mind at work trying to find or solve any health issue at hand. Made an appointment for a full body scan. After checking only the upper body he started to burn off some age spots on my hands while continuing to babble about his wonderful elegant boat. I was not questioning that he started to burn off age spots and thought this was part of the exam. This also happened to my wife that had the same full body scan. Now we get a bill for $900.00 and the office is threatening with collection if we don't pay. I have asked the office why the doctor didn't tell us that these treatments were outside of the body scan and the reply was simply, "you should have told him to stop" Really, is it up to the patient to understand what is part of an office visit and when the doctor starts a procedure that is outside of the initial reason for the visit. Highly unethical and not legal to do a procedure without telling the patient that this will cost a lot of money. Please stay away from this practice. read more

First time visited him 5/11/2016 for my shingles, shot and pills given such easy done. Second visited, 4/5/2017 for minor concern skin growth on my right leg. He took a sample for test and said he would call me. I called 4/10 and 4/17 left messages to Maria and up to date this doctor never returned my calls. I have been an extremely good patient for Dr. Luxenberg for total of 7 years. I can no longer subject myself to the ridiculously long wait it takes to see the doctor. I am done! I do not believe Anne C. is a real reveiw as I have NEVER waited 15 minutes, and don't think anyone else ever has either!!! I've actually seen people leave the office disgruntled about the long wait. The shortest time I waited was 1:15 minutes to see Dr. Luxenberg (and that was with the staff pulling my chart before I arrived). The longest I waited was almost 3 hours before walking out. I assume he is triple booking as he is only at the Huntington Beach location 1 day a week. I feel he is a knowledgable doctor and an expert at mole removal....One of the reasons I went to see him. However, when it came to Botox injections, he was always rushed. I've been getting Botox for over 10 years (from him and at times, other professionals). However, he is the only doctor who has ever bruised me with his technique. Each time I went to him, I bruised. Whereas I was not bruised when getting Botox from other doctors. Even when I told him that he was bruising me, and I would appreciate him to take care as I have event on the horizon, he'd still bruise me. Typically it would take 2 weeks to be bruise free. I can no longer subject myself to this, and I have since moved on to another doctor in Huntington Beach for ALL my dermotology needs & cosmetic procedures. I never wait more than 15 minutes and I am 100% satisfied with the customer service and care that is taken at my new doctors office. No more Botox bruising!!! I also get to talk with my doctor without him making me feel that his time is so valuable that he can't spare a moment to talk with me. My time is valuable too! Bottom line: If your time is valuable to you, find a doctor who doesn't overbook. read more

I am a little over a year removed from my last review of Dr. Luxenberg. After my unforgivable experience, I would love to report that my plantars wart is gone and the agony was worth it. Sorry, not the case. In fact, not only is it back, but I have 6 (that's right... 6) of them all across my heel. I suffered with the same wart since I was a teenager, and only by going to Dr. Luxenberg did my wart finally make some friends. Thanks, Doc. When I made my appt. with Dr. Luxenberg I was told to call ahead of time to see if he is running late. I called and was asked to come in half an hour earlier than my scheduled time. I did. Why, I have no idea because I waited over an hour before I was seen. When the doctor came in he complained that I was wearing makeup. "Who on earth wears makeup to the dermatologist?" he asked. Someone coming from work, duh! I had Botox and fillers. Quite a strange technique this guy has. I understand he needs to get close to see my face however the whole straddling my knee with his package was something. The good news, he was NOT happy to see me. The bad news is I can tell what religion he is. Wow was this guy rough. I have an extremely high tolerance for pain but never has it hurt like this and never have I bruised or swelled like this. Three weeks of looking like I got into a head on collision with a Mack truck. After two weeks I called to complain that my eye is totally drooping and I now have a big crevice under my eye. I was told that I would have to pay. I was shocked, and explained that I was just in two weeks ago and spent $1,500 why would I have to pay again. I was told that I needed to go back within a week of the procedure and it was now two weeks. I explained that I was so swollen and bruised that I couldn't even tell what I was going to look like. The receptionist said sorry but that's the policy. I told her that I was never informed of their policy, neither verbally or in writing. I told her that they had quite a scam going and hung up. A nurse phoned the next day and encouraged me to make another appt. saying she was sure that the doctor did not want me to be unhappy with his work. However she could not guarantee that I would not be charged. I was at their mercy. My face looks bad. Again, I called to see if the doctor was running late and in fact he was. I was asked to come in later. I declined and will NOT go back. I will need to go elsewhere and pay more money to fix his handy work. Turn back! I was tired of my 67 year old face with all the sun damage on it. At my daughter's wedding, we had a photo taken of the father-daughter dance. My daughter actually Photoshopped my face to remove all the sun spots! Enough was enough, so today I tried to make an appointment with a dermatologist. I went to a dermatologist in Tustin a few years ago, who was just OK, but had poor patient skills, was disinterested and her front office was the same. I called a few more and the wait times were as long as 4 months. I needed someone this week! I went to Dr. Luxenberg's website, and found time slot open for this afternoon. Perfect! I was able to to do the paperwork online and that was helpful. I arrived to his office about 20 minutes before my 2:30 appointment. While waiting, I could hear laughter in the back rooms between the doctor and his patients. Good news. The staff was super friendly and just regular folks. No pretensions or stuffiness here. I did have to wait about 45 minutes before I was taken to the exam room. But please...this is NORMAL in most medical centers, especially for appointments later in the day. I only waited about 10 minutes in the exam room and Dr. Luxenberg arrived. Super friendly, super chatty and a really nice guy. Instantly likable. We talked for a few minutes and he went right to work on my sun spots and brown spots on my face. He's a really skilled technician who works quickly and talks while he works. This keeps the patient calm and distracted as he practices his art. In a matter of minutes he treated over 60 black sun spots and several brown age spots. I do not have insurance for this procedure, and was surprised that the bill came to only $295. A small price to pay for a rejuvenated complexion. I highly recommend. PS: You people bitching about wait times for the dermatologists, you gotta realized as patients come in for treatment, they could have many additional issues that need to be addressed and treated, usually all in the same time slot.
