This was our first time here and all I can say is wow. Absolutely fantastic all the way ground. From the The valet boy to the decor to the food to the manhattans to the exceptional service. If you want a memorable night out, this is the place. We had the mushroom appetizer and that was so fantastic I wish we would've ordered two orders. We ate it so fast I forgot to take a picture. We did sit at the bar and had dinner and our bartender was fantastic. He made one of the best Manhattan's I've ever had. All was wonderful until this man came and sat next to me and started talking about politics and yelling at me because I did not believe what he believed. Kept telling him to leave me alone but he did not. So unfortunately we had to leave because I couldn't take him any longer. But of course that is not the restaurants fault just thought I'd throw that in there. We will definitely be back over and over and over again. Okay, first off, I didn't expect to enjoy this place as much as I did. We were going to celebrate a double birthday and figured we would go all out. You know, YOLO, as the kids say. Well, I'm so glad we did! We opted for the 6 course and wine pairing (while also getting a cheese plate and Caviar to start. We got a complementary bottle of bubbly with our caviar to help celebrate since none of us have ever had caviar before. It enhanced the experience, and complemented it really well. I was impressed. For the next few courses we had more than enough wine for each serving. Usually when you have a tasting accompaniment, there's only an ounce or so of a pour. Not the case here. Very generous, and fantastic selection of wines. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings, and seemed just as excited as we were to try everything! Now my husbands favorite part: the bread. They bring the bread back around anytime you ask for it. My husband just finished a cutting phase with limited carbs, so he was ALL about the carbs this time. At the end of the day, they even gave us a doggy bag of bread for him to take home, which was hilarious and fitting! It was, of course, a little pricey, but I think that was expected. Came to Matthews based upon recommendations by a friend. It was our wedding anniversary so we wanted something nice. Jumping to the conclusion, we were extremely disappointed with the entire experience. Upon being seated, we got water and our server took our drink order. The drinks came relatively quickly but it was 35 minutes before we saw our server again. We placed our simple dinner order, only two courses, and asked for some bread/butter. A young man stopped by and offered us each a single piece of bread. Our first course arrived at the one-hour mark, salads. We asked for a bottle of wine which took 15 minutes to arrive. At the two-hour mark, we flagged down our server to complain about the wait for our entrees. Our salads had been consumed nearly an hour ago. Our meal finally arrived. Portion sizes were insultingly small. My beef tenderloin, advertised as accompanied by a potato of some type, turned out to be about 4 ounces of tenderloin on top of a single 1/4" slice of potato and two small carrots. Nearly $50. By the time we left, it had been nearly 3 hours and we were still hungry and out $400. We will never go back there or to any of their other properties. read more

Everything was so explained to us, they were personable, friendly, and incredibly warming and welcoming. Could not have asked for better staff to be with us tonight. The food was great, we had the chefs special, so we got to sit at the counter and watch them make everything. Since it was the chefs choice, fish was brought out and I don't eat fish ( it's a moral obligation) Robert, the general manger, even came up to me and asked if I'd like something else. (Which is totally fine! And I didn't need anything but it was so appreciated and so kind. I've only been here once, but I would absolutely recommend this place, and if at all possible, ask for Ryan's section! And if you can, sit at the counter and talk to Bailey! We started with the beef tartare and i compare all beef tartare to Berns in Tampa - this was the first I've had anywhere that compared. It was delicious. The mushroom Anglioto was so heavenly we ordered another plate. Hubs had the lamb and it was seasoned with middle eastern spices - really lovely and delicate and i had the short rib which was braised and pull apart delicious. The happy hour prices are on par and the quality of small bites exceeds expectations. The crispy tuna taco bites are out of this world as well as the sliders. Drinks are made with a professional touch and selections of wine are vast. Noise level is perfect so you may have conversations with your date or friends and valet parking is offered in case you have trouble finding parking. If you've never been here, don't let the fanciness scare you. You may dress in nice, casual attire and fit right in. I took my husben to Matthews on a Saturday. Unfortunately it was Valentines day weekend so it was pretty busy. Our drinks were perfectly made while we waited in the lounge for our table. We had a reservation for 8:30p and our table was ready at about 8:50, no biggie as we were able to enjoy a cocktail while we waited. Our first course were the Shigoku oysters and the cold crab and shrimp. I didnt get to try the oysters because my husBen (his name is Ben) ate them. The crab and shrimp were cooked perfectly. The second course consisted of the duck confit gyoza and the diver scallop. Both were OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing! Our third course was a ribeye with a savory bread pudding and a lobster tail with pasta. Again, both were absolutely amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection. I do not care for chocolate, and did not try my husBen's chocolate torte but the creme brulee was damn near orgasmic. I almost forgot to add that our server, Beau I believe, was fantastic. Never skipped a beat and was incredibly attentive. Matthews is not a place we will go to often because it is expensive, but it is worth every penny. If you are a true foodie, you will appreciate paying a higher price for your meal to be perfect. Matthew's has been on my list to try forever, and I finally got to check out their Happy Hour last week, which I must say is pretty legit. It runs from 4:30 - 6:30 PM and all of their bar bites are $5, house wines are $5, domestic and craft beers are $3/$4, well cocktails are $4, and house martinis are $6. How can you beat that?! We ended up ordering the petite cheese plate, Korean chicken bites, Hawaiian tuna tartare tacos, and M burger sliders. Everything was amazing and a good size for 2 people. I'd say that each of their bar bites is good for 1 or 2 people, so if you're with 4 or more, double down. We also strayed off the bar menu and ordered their soufflé of the day which was a Grand Marnier soufflé. Delicious! They also have a great deal on Mondays where over 200+ bottles are half off, so we ended up ordering a bottle of the 2012 Cain Cuvee which was superb. The M lounge was quiet but busy enough and the service was spot on. I think I've found my new favorite HH spot! read more

WE had an amazing dinner with our kids at this location. Now our kids are very adventurous eaters (ages 4/7) and willing to try a lot of different foods. We started with the steak tartar and roasted bone marrow. I didn't get any of it from my older daughter and hubby eating it. They really enjoyed the flavors of the items mixed together. My younger daughter and I enjoyed our bread samples they brought to the table. I was glad I did to save room for dinner. I opted for the scallops and pork belly entree plus I added in a half order of Foie Gras. Everything was cooked perfectly and had such great flavor. It did blend well and made for an amazing dish. My husband did the fish which he said was amazing as well and cooked perfectly. The kids split the tenderloin (I totally thought they would have had the pasta, but they changed it up on me). The steak was cooked great and plenty for the both of them to share. The service was amazing. They kept checking on us and even brought some crayons and coloring sheets out to the table for the kids when we first got there. We were too full to try the desserts, but with the open kitchen the kids got to meet one of the chefs who made them fresh cookies that night for being so good and eating so well. Such a great memorable meal and I recommend this place for anyone who wants a little extra for their dinner. read more

Thanks to Restaurant Week and a lovely group of companions, I got to try a very special restaurant that I might not have. Although we stayed in the bar area, smartly decorated with an assortment of chairs & tables, I peeked into the main dining room and was impressed. We had an assortment of dishes from the Happy Hour menu. I had Shrimp and polenta, which was so delicious I gobbled it right up. Debbie ordered fish & chips - got 2 orders for 1! The fish was lightly battered and golden brown and the fries were sprinkled with rosemary & Parmesan. We had an order of escargot and, although I didn't try, everyone said it was the best ever! There was a soufflé - but it disappeared in a flash! Our server and bartender, Natane, was great - attentive, helpful and very pleasant. We debated picking the Chef's Adventure Tasting Menu to just not have to pick. We ended up asking the waiter for a couple suggestions, phew! Dodged that one. Don't worry, we didn't stumble on the food - that we're decisive on. We were brought here by a potential employer and thus the cost of the meal was covered. The service from when we walked in was top notch. The staff were very friendly and very knowledgeable. The interior of the restaurant was interesting because for such a high end place you would expect a dimly lit ambiance but in fact the restaurant was very well lit with nice natural light and I really enjoyed this. I had the house old fashioned as well as the 4 spice margarita, both excellent. The homemade bread was to die for. The charcuterie board was very good. We ordered the escargot and vichyssoise. The vichyssoise was served warm, with a puff pastry filled with crème fraiche that you crack into the soup. This was delicious and the escargot was decadent. I got the duck breast which was cooked perfectly, so tasty. Would highly recommend, the price may be a bit high but if you're ok paying for good food I would come here at least once! read more

Matthews is a special restaurant that knocks it out of the park with stellar food and *outstanding* service. It's one of my favorite fine-dining experiences in Jax and rivals that of restaurants from other big cities. The menu isn't the most exotic but the execution is excellent! AND THEY HAVE LEGIT WAGYU BEEF The staff goes out of their way to welcome you. One time I was waiting in the bar area while my husband parked the car, and three different waiters made a point to stop by to ask if I needed anything. That type of attentiveness continued with our main waiter (Dan?) who was very friendly and engaging. I've come to Matthews to celebrate my past 3 birthdays and I always ask to eat at the Chef's table. I love the view of the kitchen and the opportunity to chat with the Executive Chef. Please please please try the Adventure menu! For $85 the quality and variety of food you're getting would easily cost $120+ at other places. It's worth it. We found Matthew's when on vacation for my birthday. Experience Brain: There is a valet, but it is optional, and oddly we were instructed to park in the same spot they would have for an extra charge. When we walked in, the place was nearly empty, except for a handful of people at the bar, but before I could look around we were spotted and greeted by the hostess and hustled off to our table, picture attached. The open kitchen is right there as you walk in, and does have seating for those who like to stare down the chef and kitchen staff as they work. We were quick to sit far away by a window where it was nice and cozy and quiet. Our server's assistant greeted us, though we thought she was our server, and, after taking our picture for us, offered water and bread before service started. The bread of the night was a cinnamon swirled raisin bread, a kalamata olive focaccia, and a parmesan biscuit. By the time our server came along, we were well on our way through the menu. I was having to translate a good amount of it to my Gorgeous. My favorite part was the assumed pronunciations of the very fancy ingredients/cooking methods. Our server did instruct us that ordering a soufflé now was the only way it would happen, so we did. In the end, we were both so impressed that this place won the honor of being the first to have a special tip set aside specifically for the kitchen staff, which we hand delivered. Chef Brain: Starting off, we were lucky to get in right at the beginning of the night. Matthew's struck me as the kind of place that starts their night strong. For our appetizers, we chose the Parisienne Gnocchi with broccolini, garden peas, pine nuts, and a very soft parmesan veloute that I am now tasked with recreating for my Gorgeous whenever she wants another taste. This dish was presented with all elements where they should be; the broccolini serving as the base, topped with the gnocchi tossed in the veloute with the peas, garnished with toasted pine nuts a just a tiny sprinkie (another hilarious typo we love and use constantly now) of finely chopped parsley done correctly (washed, dried, then chopped so it does not look like wet grass). The other was the Butternut Squash Soup with chunks of duck confit and a dollop of fall spiced crème fraiche on top. It was the smoothest soup from a restaurant I've ever had. Braised Short Rib with bucatini (a spaghetti-like pasta with a hole running down the center), roasted sweet peppers, and garnished with goat cheese crumbles. Sweet lord, where to begin on this one. The plate had a stunning nest of spun pasta, in the center of which the rib was barely holding together, with the sweet peppers around it helping to shore it up from just falling apart, and a generous sprinkie of goat cheese on top really made this dish for me. I love seeing a typically tough meat cooked so perfectly that I only need the knife to keep it on my fork, rather than a chainsaw to cut off a slab of dinner jerky. I love duck, and get it often. The downside, for all involved, is that I KNOW good duck. The Duck Breast with parsnip apple puree (think applesauce with a secret ingredient), celery confit, and garnished with sweet and sour (kind of pickled and caramelized at the same time) onion from Matthew's is truly a work of art. This was about as simple a plate design as it gets, which is refreshing, because I'm over the artsy stuff that dominated the early 2000s. The duck was cut into slices and fanned out over the plate with the celery confit and puree to either side, and slightly under, with the onions on the bottom tips as the garnish. My Caramel's forever go-to is Mac & Cheese. Matthew's makes theirs with a karst cave-aged cheddar mournay and it is garnished with seasoned breadcrumbs before going under the salamander to brown. The noodles and sauce are kept separate until ordered, at which point they are tossed together to fully coat the noodles without drowning them, making for a far more enjoyable dish, rather than the standard "mac & cheese soup" we are all familiar with. The Pommes Frites at Matthew's are a large hand cut steak fry that is initially poached in an oil bath to par cook, then held until service and fried to golden brown before being tossed with chopped rosemary and truffle oil. To see my lady's eyes light up with her first bite said it all. Soufflés are an item to be ordered at the beginning of the meal, when done correctly, because they cannot be made ahead of time and held for service. Tonight's was a citrus soufflé, topped with powdered sugar. To the uninitiated, a soufflé is a pastry that is very light and airy, made to order because the egg whites must be freshly whipped before folding into batter and immediately poured into the soufflé cup and baked. The second it is done, the dish is removed, garnished, and a food runner must deliver it to the table before the steam holding it up ruins the presentation. read more

Where to begin?! Two best things we tried - the foie gras and the A5 Wagyu. Both were a new experience for both my wife and I and we were both blown away. The foie gras was an explosion of layered flavors which all came together to form what can only be called a mouth orgasm. The A5 wagyu was the most tender and perfectly cooked (rare to mid rare) steak I've ever had the delight of eating. It was essentially beef flavored butter. I want to go back in time and relive my first taste of these two dishes. Mind you, everything else was also fantastic. Wagyu Bolognese for me and Diver Scallops w/curried cauliflower for Sis and the sides of fried brussel sprouts and mac-n-cheese with the 'enhancement' of foie gras. Dessert was take away petit fours. *** Thank you to Chef Alex and crew, our server Sara(h) helped by Isabell(a), the master mixologist (didnt get his name). They all took time to talk and laugh with us and made it such a delightful time.
