This place was recommended by several of my friends so I had to check it out. I made a reservation. I called ahead and they called me back. I think it was the owner who called back. SO it's located right in downtown neighborhood. second from the corner. A yoga place is next door. It has an awning at the entrance. It's kind of hidden. There is street parking. We had to drive around a bit to find a spot but not too far at all. I came at just before 5:30 PM which is when my reservation was. They are supposed to open at 5 but the doors were locked. The owner came and opened the door and asked if I was David and said someone coming in had locked it. The owner was so nice and animated, so funny. I think his name is Adam, which another customer called out later. The place was empty except for the staff. Very dark in this place. Lots of old photos lined the walls. He sat us at a table about 3 tables in from the front door. Which is great because I hate being by the door. Adam said this was the Love table. Since we were a couple. There was a wall of all the liquor to our left , very long and a lot of liquor. He gave us a menu and said he would be back to tell us the specials. Another person brought us water and I had to check the place out. I was going to get up and walk around but Adam came right back. He said that in the back all of the phots were of people kissing and I could go there later. I never did though. Next time. I really couldn't tell how big the place was. I never got up. The menu wasn't that big , just one page. Adam went over the specials. OMG there were so many and every kind of fish and meat dishes. I couldn't remember them all. Way more than the menu. It was truly amazing that he could spout all of it out verbatim. I heard him do it again to tables that came in later. We started off with a ground up filet minion egg roll. The way he described it my wife thought it was going to be a flaky beef in a pastry but it was egg roll. I liked the flavor a lot but it had cilantro so the wife didn't. My wife wanted the caprices salad and they split it and gave us each a plate. It was just ok. My tomatoes were hard , still had fresh basil. I asked if he had Remy Martin and he did so I ordered it neat. It came back with a heated glass. Wow I haven't had it that way in a long time such nice customer service here. Each dish we had they cleared away the silverware to. Plus cleaned the table of crumbs. SO nice. I got the seafood pasta and wow. Lots of seafood. Big chunks of fish. All different kinds. Not over cooked and nice and cheesy. I loved it. It came with a huge basil plant on top . The wife got the sea bass and it was great tasting but kind of a small piece. Plus they put horseradish in the mashed potatoes which my wife didn't like. I didn't taste it at all but she did. The owner came back and told us the desserts. We got the carrot cake and it was really good. In house of course. We had such a nice time eating here at Moxie's. It wasn't cheap but quality isn't. Big thing with all the specials , you don't know all the prices either. With tip it was around $180. We will probably be back sometime soon .

With a name like Moxie, I was immediately intrigued. We are so glad we finally tried this special place. Remember they are only open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is not a large restaurant so reservations are recommended. I called a few days prior to our desired date and time and left a voicemail message. I soon received confirmation from Adam. They have a small menu, but you have to listen carefully to all their daily specials. We shared crab cakes and Brussels sprouts salad. Both were quite tasty. The crab cakes were not overly flavored, but this allowed them to pair nicely with the trio of sauces. The salad was unusual. Made with the outer leaves of Brussels sprouts. We were both glad we tried it. My wife had the veal scallopini and I had veal piccata. Both entrees were very good with mashed potatoes and vegetables. We each had a glass of Argentinian Malbec which paired nicely with our meals. For desert we shared pecan cheesecake. This was delicious. This is a wonderful and friendly restaurant. A great place for a special occasion. Anything from holidays to birthdays or just making it to the weekend.

We weee in the mood for an old school restaurant with a dark interior and wonderful food for my wife's birthday. She hadn't been to Moxie for over 20 years, but our expectations weee exceeded! Great service, terrific food and wine. And not unreasonably priced for the quality you get.

Moxie has been on my radar for a while now, especially with how highly it's regarded by Sacramentans--particularly the older generation, it seems. Since it's within walking distance, I finally decided it was time to make a reservation. I'd heard it can get especially busy this time of year with graduations, so I called more than a month in advance. While they typically only take reservations two weeks out, they were happy to put my name down. When we arrived, the interior was just as charming as the photos I'd seen. A true hole-in-the-wall opens up into an intimate, warm, and dimly lit space. It feels like being transported to another era, though I can't quite articulate which one. We brought a bottle of wine, which was promptly corked, and the drinks started flowing. As others have mentioned, the owner personally comes to your table to check in and share the specials. I can understand why some people might find that style of ordering a bit jarring, but I found it charming and unique. We started with the grilled portobello mushrooms, which was a bit lackluster in truth. For my entrée, I went with one of the specials the owner mentioned--a Macadamia-Crusted Swordfish with Lobster Ravioli. My guest had the Spinach Ravioli as it was the only vegetarian option. Having never had swordfish before, I was amazed. It was meaty yet tender, with a perfectly seared crust and topped with a tomato-herb mixture and I believe a bit of chèvre, which all paired beautifully. The lobster ravioli was incredible--fresh, rich, and succulent. Everything on the plate worked together effortlessly. It was a standout dish. I tried the spinach ravioli as well, and it was also perfectly executed. We finished with a crème brûlée, our first time having one, and again, the bar was set high. It was creamy, delicious, and not overly sweet. Since we were celebrating a birthday, the owner kindly brought out a complimentary dessert: what I believe was a European-style hot drinking chocolate. It tasted like rich, melted dark chocolate--decadent and thoughtful. I can't deny that the bill was high, but the service is classic and attentive and the food speaks for itself. It absolutely felt worth it for a special occasion. I'd love to come back and sit further inside the restaurant next time--we were tucked in a cozy front corner near the door, which was intimate, but I'd love to be fully immersed in the inviting ambiance. Fantastic experience and an excellent choice for a celebration or if you just want to treat yourself. Go in with an open mind and try something off the specials menu. The owner is definitely a character as other reviewers have mentioned, but he's a genuinely nice guy and made it a memorable experience.

Could not have picked a better place for a date night. First off - atmosphere is dark and romantic. Great vibes. The staff are super nice and chill, and the owner Adam is so nice and friendly and makes you feel like he is invested in your experience in a casual way. The food was incredible. Our appetizers were so good and the entrees too!

My husband loves Moxie! He would go there once a month if he could. Unfortunately, we can't afford to eat out that frequently there. We always start with the crab cakes - they are delicious! We've tried most all of their proteins and have not been disappointed. It's fun. A little quirky. And delicious!

Everything here is a 10/10. I mean it !! This was my first time going for my 5 year anniversary and I've got to say it's exceeded my expectations. The owner and our server was so attentive and thoughtful. Even opened our door for us on the way out and told us to watch our step like SO SWEET. I'm definitely coming back for sure and I'd recommend it to couples especially. Very romantic setting. Huge fan of their vintage feel, decor, and dim lit lighting. I've never had customer service like this before. For a second, it made me feel like I'm in some lowkey restaurant in the middle of Italy (which I've been to before.. nothing like this).

It's been around for quite some time and you can always count on excellent service and an excellent meal. The vibe gives you New York Italian mood lighting. The menu itself that's posted online..I don't think has changed for years so when you see it don't get disappointed because where they wow you is all the specials. Fish,Steak, Lamb you name it they have it as a special and the presentation is outstanding.

We decided to try Moxie for our anniversary after reading reviews, it was a great decision. The service was impeccable with all of our courses perfectly timed and needs taken care of before we had to ask. I ordered the seared scallop and prawn special, and wow. The scallops were perfectly cooked. They were soft and buttery. The mashed potatoes were decadent. My husband ordered the lamb loin. Lamb isn't the first thing I would order, but honestly I didn't know which dish I liked better! The lamb loin was so tender, breaking apart in your mouth. We have definitely found a new date spot in Sacramento. Highly recommend!

Had such a lovely dinner! The ambience was perfect. Everyone was so kind and hilarious! Definitely coming back!

This hidden gem offers an experience that's unlike anything else in the city. The setup is simple but charming: you literally walk up to a window and order your wine. The Wine Window is affordable, laid-back, and surprisingly quaint. It's the kind of place where the ambiance, the people, and the energy make it feel more like an experience within an experience--not just a drink stop. I had the chance to chat with John, the owner, who shared a bit of the backstory. He previously owned a full wine room nearby, but when the pandemic hit, he had to pivot. Instead of calling it quits, he leaned into a smaller, more intimate concept inspired by wine windows in Europe. Honestly, I think the scale makes it even better. The outdoor patio is perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine while people-watching on L Street, and yes, there's even a restroom available (a rare but very appreciated amenity for this type of setup). My favorite thing was probably the lamb. It has a Thanksgiving flavor to it because of the lingonberry demi glace. This also had beets, which I am not a fan of, but it was delicious in there. Hubs bomboloni was really delicious as well... having just gotten back from Italy last summer, this brought back memories and flavors from Italy! Will be back sooner than later.

The food does not deliver on the promises of these first observances. We each chose the 5 course menu and shared bites to try as many things as possible. The highlights: Carne Crudo and Composed Oysters were solid. Asparagus and Prosciutto was perfection with frisee and 6 minute egg. Vinaigrette perfect. Lasagna was tiny layers of pure decadence. The lows: The pulpo was so over cooked you could barely cut it with a knife. The fettuccine with lobster and shrimp was cloying and seafood was also over cooked. The lamb lacked any real presence and was completely taken over by the accompanying sauces. The branzino was basically inedible. The thinnest of filets that could not be separated with a fork and barely broken in to pieces with help of a knife. Honestly the worst branzino I've been served in a restaurant. For the price I would never recommend Allora. And honestly, I wish I would have read some previous reviews before assuming the quality of food.
