Yet I must say that I was surprised when I was taken to it for dinner. I would not expect this kind of food coming from a place like this. My husband and I visited Mavericks tonight for dinner. I had a grilled tomato and goat cheese chicken sandwich with fries, he had a burger and soup. The beers on tap were great, the food was ok. Wife and I stopped there for lunch after 1:00pm the place was empty except for 6 people sitting at the Bar..The Bartender/Server was busy chit chatting with his regulars at the bar...Finally after about 5 minutes he strolled over to take our beverage order...he dropped off our drinks and left going back to chatting with the Bar Patrons..leaving us sitting for over 10 minutes...he finally headed our way again...but had to stop and chit chat some more..when he did get to our table I offered to pay for our beverage because we could not wait any longer...I have read other reviews similar to this...Owners...you are losing MONEY because of Poor Customer Service read more

A good neighborhood joint. Good beer selection and fantastic burgers. I recommend the smokin gouda or the fire truck. They also have a "Chef's Revenge," which doesn't disappoint for those willing to take risks with their food. The call ahead option is convenient for those who don't want to wait for a table. Wait times can get a little long once, and there have been times we've asked for water or another round of beers without the server following through. Recently, we had been waiting a few minutes to be seated when another party walked in. That party was acknowledged and waited on before we were. When I spoke up to say we had also called ahead and were also waiting, the manager provided a stern response that he would wait on us after the other party. We have visited Mavericks multiple times. It could defiantly benefit from some updating in the bar / restaurant area. The food has been great so far. Service is par at best, especially when it isn't that busy during lunch hours. They make great drinks and have a decent tap list for beer fans. read more

We used to like this place, great foo and atmosphere. In the last 6 months the food and service has gone down hill. Food served cold or undercooked. Staff is more concerned with their activities the prior evening than the customer. I hope they can get their act together but I am not planning to return any time soon. read more

Maverick's came up on a list of best MN steak restaurants. It should have been on a list of best grilled chicken restaurants. 15 varieties of grilled chicken sandwiches. Two steak entrees. Two. When you only have two steak entrees, you aren't a steak house. Very limited, low end wine selection, as well. When I go to a steakhouse, I want to complement the steak with a nice wine. We both chose the sirloin, it was cut 2" thick, like a filet would be, and it was tasty. But, because it was so thick, "rare" meant a cold, not cool red center, meaning the heat from the grill never got to it. The quality of meat was outstanding for the price. I was looking for a good steak, not a value steak. And, like others have commented, service was slow. Our waitstaff was kind of annoying - very harsh tone to her voice. Place definitely has a "local spot" feel to it. The knotty wood paneling reminded me of a 1970's rec room. I don't think we were necessarily disappointed in the meal, it just wasn't what we went in expecting. If you are looking for a burger, or a grilled chicken sandwich in a super casual atmosphere, this may be a good choice. read more

We tried Mavericks for the first time last night, and it was a nice dinner out. It's kind of hidden in a residential neighborhood and needs a little more parking. But it had a cute private patio. I didn't see too much of the interior. The service was friendly and nice. We had chicken quesadillas, then hubby had ribs and I had a wood fire grilled chicken sandwich with grilled tomatoes, basil and chevre. The menu focuses on grilled items done over their wood grill but had a varied selection. All of the dressings etc. were homemade and the portions were generous. I'd go back here again. We got there about 7:30 pm and they said it would be 20-25 minute wait. I looked around the bar and there were numerous reserved signs on tables but no I'm waiting. I asked the hostess about it and she said the kitchen couldn't keep up so they were waiting to seat people which I think is good instead of seating people and making them wait. We went to get a drink at the bar while waiting for a table and the big Burly bartender was the most rude bartender I think I've ever experienced in 25 years of going to bars. We tried to sit at the bar where there were clearly open seats and no one sitting there with drinks. He told us they were reserved. He had absolutely no personality. We ended up sitting in the bar because apparently the sever in the restaurant had a broken arm? And couldn't work both places. Odd situation . Got our food and it was good except my husbands zucchini wasn't even cooked . It was like they cut it , scorched it and put it on a plate. So raw. Sent it back and it was ok. This was it second tome there. The food is pretty good both times but the Bartender needs to be 86'ed ! read more

This place is a hidden gem! Their burgers are fantastic. Because they're wood grilled, it takes just a whee bit longer than usual. The ambience is casual and familiar. I love their roasted tomato and goat cheese burger. Their lettuce wraps are also fantastic. Their happy hour drink specials are awesome as well; two for the price of one! Hidden Gem on the burbs. So many different choices for chicken sandwiches. Their appetizers are great, I really liked the Wontons. Great choices on tap. I heard about this place from coworkers and thought I would bring the family and give it a try. That was the biggest mistake of the night. Before we got seated we waited in a doorway to be seated as the host was on the phone and she could not multitask at all. When we got seated we we waited a while to even place our order and when we did it took the waitress over ten minutes to bring drinks to table. Food coming out was ok but the food tasted like crap. I got the prime rib sandwich that the waitress recommended and it was horrible. It tasted like it was tossed in the microwave and was very disappointing. My wife got a salad and she said it was gross and only thing that it had good was the ranch. Now to my kids they both wanted a cheese quesadilla. When they came out my kids didn't even touch it. It was just like they threw kraft cheese in a tortilla shell and put it over a fire it had no flavor at all. When we asked to speak to a manager I was told no one was available at that time. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I did reach out to them via internet and never got a response friend the management here but they did see it. Should be better. Great location, nice patio. Recently updated their menu, and it appears to be scaled back from what they used to have. We were here a couple years ago, when they were pushing a more upscale menu -- really focusing on dinner entrees. At that point, it seemed like a nice start. This was our third visit to Maverick's. We mainly went back to finish using a Living Social coupon. Our last visit was quite disappointing, with my prime rib sandwich being so over-cooked, even the au jou served with it did not help. This time the food experience, at least, was better once a very dirty glass was taken care of - after I'd already drunk half its contents. There was way too much fat on the steak, but at least it was cooked properly. Due to a private party in the dining room, we were placed in the bar, where chairs with backs on them are a rarity. The hostess graciously found one for me, which I appreciated greatly. As any bar, though, it was terribly loud - so much so that we had a hard time carying on a conversation of our own. At one point, a couple of what we thought were patrons were being quite loud and vulgar - f-bombs every other word. They turned out to be staff. While we're not crossing Maverick's off our list completely, it's being relegated to the "back-up plan" list. read more

Went here again for valentines day, had a great dinner as usual, I had the wood grilled "roasted tomato and goat cheese" burger and my fiancee had the steak and crab cakes, which was a valentines day special item both of us though it was one of the best dinners we have had in a long time. The food is ALWAYS great. The fried cauliflower with bleu cheese is my favorite appetizer. So much flavor! The bleu is chunky and creamy with lots of herb flavor. So good. We always order the Chef's Revenge because it showcases what can be done by a great chef. I like everything so the surprise of what I'm going to eat is exciting and fearless. I had grilled salmon on fresh red mashed potatoes and peas, my son had meatloaf stroganoff and the sauce was bursting with herb flavors and amazing, my son in law had pasta with grilled chicken in a red sauce. Everything tastes flavorful, fresh and hot! The chef is so good and doesn't skimp on anything. Love this place. It's just an unassuming place, which I like, that has great food. Quiet, comfortable little bar in the northern suburbs. Tucked away on some back streets. Service was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Beer selection was adequate. Food however was a miss. While they had some really interesting things on the menu, they lacked execution. I ordered the jalapeno won tons. They were overcooked and the sauce was way too salty. My wife ordered the bourbon bbq boneless buffalo wings (say that 10 times fast!!) they were horribly overcooked!!! I think the cook may have took a smoke break when our stuff was in the fryer. Well it took me a while to finally get to this place and I must say I feel really stupid for not trying it earlier. Oh boy where do I begin. #1 This place is quite possibly the best place to eat in Champlin maybe even all of Minneapolis. #2 The place is quite possibly the coolest place to hang out in Champlin maybe even all of Minneapolis (sorry for the double up but it's true) #3 The people here are AWESOME. From the staff and the patrons who frequent this place they all make you want to stay longer. It's like the "Cheers of Champlin" someone told me. #4 Food- All of the food is very good. I highly recommend the Double Cheese Burger with cheddar cheese and the chipotle ole sauce ( must add this sauce). The wood fire grill really brings out the flavor in it. Pair with the fries which are phenomenal. Also my favorite was the whiskey glazed wings. #5 Décor- was very New York Retro which a great bar in the center of the room with maybe some of the best music playing in the background. Think "Corey Heart, REO, Foreigner, Depeche Mode. Please note that they have two rooms. One is the main bar room while the other is a dining room. I preferred the atmosphere in the bar but I did eat again in the dining room with some friends and did enjoy it. One other thing. This place is packed on the weekends and finding a seat at the main bar can take some time if you don't get there early enough. There are other seating areas at the bar that are not attached to the main bar BUT still in the "bar room" that are easier to get. Funny story: I initially went here to kill an 2 hours before my movie started down the street. I came in with the intention to only staying an hour and a half. Well you get to talking with the people there and one hour turned into two hours. Two hours then turned into four. Six hours latter I basically closed down the place at 2am. In that time I tried a bunch of things some of which random people at the bar bought and shared it with all. I seriously had a blast. read more

Mavericks looks like a biker bar from the front, so we never stopped in. Some of our friends said they go there often and thought it was really good, so we decided to give it a try on a recent Friday night. We went early, so it was Happy Hour and they were running specials on drinks and appetizers. The drinks came quickly, but the food was extremely slow. It took about 45 minutes to get our meals, and there were only about 3 other tables full when we ordered. Food quality was pretty good, but not great. Looks like they're renovating the dining room, and it has a fresh feel to it. There's a gas fireplace that's open to the outside patio. It was too cool outside to spend much time there, but looks like it would be nice if it was a bit warmer. The bar area is about twice the size of the dining room, so the initial biker bar impression may not be too far off from Maverick's roots. read more
