I've been a regular at this place since I first moved to Denver over 20 years ago, back when it was still called Hemingways. The atmosphere is just a gem, a truly unique treat for the Wash Park neighborhood. It's cozy in winter with the fireplace in the front room. It's hopp'n during warmer seasons with the open concept of garage doors onto the side patio and the accordion doors in the front bar for all the fresh breezes. The tiki bar is fantastic for private parties and special occasions. But, that's just the layout. I love meeting friends there because it's reasonably priced, has a great happy hour, is central to downtown, and consistent with food as well as service. For someone who only eats chicken and seafood, that's another reason I enjoy this place and their oysters. read more

My husband and I went to Max's yesterday for Mother's Day. I just have to say this restaurant is the cutest, with awesome specials throughout the week! We tried the lobster Benedict, and it was my favorite dish. I wish they would offer this all the time, but it was just a special. The breakfast potatoes that came with this were the best I had ever had. Seriously consider making this a full time dish guys!!! We also ordered the shrimp and grits. I'm from Alabama, so I know this dish well. It was fabulous. My only complaint is the amount of broth with the lack of grits. More grits with less broth would be more favorable. We also tried the grilled calamari. It was good, but I don't know that I'd order this again as it was not a dish for me. With that being said, we will be back to try more specials. Super Quaint!! Lots of different seating areas inside and outside to choose between. Who knew this place existed?? My daughter discovered it and I'm SO glad she did. Their prices are extremely reasonable and their servers are really great. I need to say that their oysters are wonderful. Grilled or raw. Fresh and tasty too!! Almost every person at our table really enjoyed their dishes. The scallop entree was rather sparse with only 3 scallops and was one of the most expensive items on the menu. My husband and I came here the other night to celebrate our two week break from work after discovering they are a part of the Bilt rewards network our landlord Greystar participates in. We get 3x points towards our rent for using partner vendors, such as Lyft, as well. I had been once before as a guest to my friend's daughter's birthday dinner and had the fish and chips. It was great so I thought let's try them again! I'm from NYC and I was craving seafood but my fav Jax in Glendale closed apparently and I didn't want to go to Cherry Creek and pay half my paycheck. Well.. this place has either gone downhill or I should just stick to fish and chips. I ordered the $27 Cioppino and my husband ordered the special $23 Shrimp Scampi. Both flavorless and the seafood was overcooked. Was most definitely NOT flown in fresh like some other places (Rioja, Stoic and Genuine e.g.). The Maryland style crab cakes were not lump and just looked pathetic. Even the special holiday cocktail was pretty bad, too much cranberry juice. Our waitress was lovely and I love the rustic ambiance but it's not enough to justify the prices and the $26 I spent to get a Lyft here from our 9&Co apartment. read more

We have been here many times previously. We had cocktails and oysters. We each had cioppino. When we've had it before it was in a nice big bowl, nice and filling and very tasty. They offered gluten free bread, but that's not usually very delicious. Was I supposed to fill up on bread? That would be a poor excuse. On the plus side, it really was delicious. This place has never disappointed me in any way. Its casual atmosphere is inviting for any size party with your family or friends or even your date. Seafood that tastes good at affordable prices is what people can go for here. I appreciate the generous Happy Hour menu. Everyday from 3pm to 6pm. With $2 off ALL appetizers, you can share some plates with others as most of them are a good portion. House wines are $5 during HH; if you like white wines go for the refreshing Sauvignon Blanc that is of great quality. Our waiter, Laurent F was so easygoing with us. Attentive, prompt are words I use to describe him as an efficient waiter with very little effort. It was a quick early dinner for us at 4:30pm and we lacked nothing during the time we were there. Shrimp Ceviche was good. I don't necessarily say that it was the best kind I've ever had and yet it surely didn't disappoint us. Max Mussels are a must order item from the menu as it's a good portion. Ordered take out for from max gill and grill. I have mixed reviews on our order. We ordered two of the fish and chips and an order of the calamari. The calamari was good in flavor although some pieces were really rubbery which was disappointing because of the inconsistency and we were a bit disappointed that more than half of the order were mostly fried peppers and not actual calamari. The fish and chips were our biggest disappointment. Usually when you Think of fish and chips, you imagine your fillets of fish and fries. We, however, got more so like fish sticks size pieces. My husbands order had three pieces and mine had only two. I do have to say the flavor was bomb (soooo good abs well seasoned), perfectly cooked, however the size of two fish sticks and getting filled up with fries was a let down. I went with a friend for happy hour and was delighted by the experience! The atmosphere is warm and beachy, creating a great vibe for a relaxed outing. Our server, Savannah, was fantastic--she made excellent recommendations and was on top of everything! Their happy hour menu is solid, offering a wide range of food and drinks at reasonable prices, with $2 off all apps, specialty cocktails, and $2 oysters. I ordered a Painkiller, which was perfectly balanced--refreshing with just the right mix of juices and rum. My friend and I shared the French Dip sandwich, Lobster Flatbread, and a few happy hour oysters. The oysters were a bit small but very fresh. The sandwich and flatbread were both delicious, and the kitchen even split the sandwich for us without needing to ask, which we appreciated. Service was fantastic and the restaurant is adorable. We visited on Thursday when they had an all day happy hour so well drinks were only $5 - great deal! We started with the baked Asiago crab dip and man, was it filling! We barely had room for actual dinner. Fun appetizer but not the best I've ever had. The hot lobster roll was alright, bread was light and pillowy and lobster was just fine. However, the french fries were perfectly crunchy. The fish tacos had a nice (possibly tempera) breading and were tasty. The asparagus side was pretty pathetic. Side of mac & cheese was large for the price and quite good! This place has been on our "to go" list for a long time, however it wasn't actually until getting a discount through Offline we decided to go. Ambience is great, really a fun quirky place inside! Service was also good and very fast, however, our entrees came out WAY too fast as we were only partly through our appetizer. I got the key lime martini which was really tasty and my fiancé got a traditional margarita which was very strong! We then shared the mussels as our appetizer, and it's a really good amount! They were good, a few overly fishy ones but that was definitely the minority. We then got the shrimp po boy which was massive with old bay fries, and the green chile lobster Mac and cheese, which was all really yummy! I would return again and am definitely interested in sitting in another room because they all look so fun and unique! read more

Do you remember the tv series Cheers with Ted Danson? Well, this is that place with all the friendliness and cheer! A neighborhood bar and restaurant that welcomes everyone who walks in. The service from bartenders (kudos Matt!) to wait staff is spot on and accommodating. Food is fantastic. If you are not a salad person then try the Max Salad and you will be! It is excellent. Avocado toast is THE best around. Fish n' Chips and the Lobster Roll are to die for. If you are lucky enough to see the Shrimp Tacos offered as a special, do yourself a favor and order that. I guarantee it will be like angels dancing on the tip of your tongue. Max needs to be on your go to list if it isn't already! read more

This will likely be my last review for 2024, and I couldn't be happier it was here! We have been coming here for over 10 years for mostly special occasions, but also for just great food and cozy atmosphere. I find it unique because there is an island/dockside feel to the place, but a cozy warm place in the winter. No matter what the season, they do a wonderful job taking care of us and serving up awesome food! Noise level for a Monday at 5pm was very tolerable, even as the place started getting busier. Easy to hear each other and chat. My all time favorite here is the lobster Mac & Cheese with hatch green chili. It is the best I have had anywhere (including Maine.) Usually there is enough to take home, but since it has been awhile, I took no hostages. Parking can be a challenge and I would recommend leaving yourself plenty of time to drive around to find a spot. There were plenty of lucky folks that got good places, but it was when I was driving the other way. This is one of those places you can wear comfortable clothes, shorts, tees or your suit and anything in between. I have never felt out of place because of what I had on. Max's continues to be one of my favorite HH places. They have a great menu of HH bites along with their regular menu. This time we tried the lobster flatbread.... wow! Delish! I always have to have a few half price oysters (my dinner companion was squeamish....lol) and a painkiller cocktail. This time my dinner companion wanted a sandwich so we had a french dip.... the kitchen kindly split it for us (always nice). 10 Stars!!! My wife and I, along with her sister and her sister's husband, enjoyed one of the most fantastic dining experiences of our lives. That is amazing enough, but to consider we were in the bar area makes it even more remarkable. The bartenders were also the waiter/waitress, and they did everything in high gear. Julie was a bundle of high-energy joy, and Chris was extremely pleasant and accommodating. It was a full evening of happiness, enhanced by the experience of the people and the food. The appetizers were worthy of being a full meal, and the main courses were generous and perfectly prepared. I can only wish this place were in Las Vegas, where I live. I would not just frequent it, I would haunt it. I can only hope that everyone who goes there enjoys the same experience. Judging by the crowd, they must. Now, if your preference is sleek chrome and glass for the 18-25 crowd, it may not suit you as well as it did for the four of us. But on the hit or miss scale for me, it was a knockout. read more

I've eaten at Max's twice now and both times have been amazing. 1st was a group/work dinner and the 2nd was Christmas Eve with my family. It's a laid back, new England fisherman's warf bar/grill atmosphere. Enjoyable with friends for drinks and also with the family & kids. Their crab dip appetizer is the sooooo good. Served warm, full of crab and their freshly grilled garlic bread (ask for extra). Both times, I got their classic lobster roll. It's packed with lobster, like that's all it is. On a warm, grilled buttery roll. Their staff is so friendly, attentative and welcoming. This has definitely become one of my favorite places to eat so delicious seafood. A huge plus, it doesn't break the bank for a great seafood meal. I can't wait to visit when the weather warms up to sit in their tiki bar patio in back. After a nice long day getting my steps in at Wash Park, I decided to treat myself to a lovely meal. A person had suggested that I'd try this place out since it was near by. I decided to take the suggestion and also it's been one of the places I've been wanting to try too along this strip. I rolled in about 2 pm on a Saturday and was quickly greeted as I walked in. I grabbed a seat at the bar. Place at this hour was not busy which was nice and peaceful. Jeremy the bar tender assisted me during my time here and was excellent with suggestions and input. Ambiance is casual. There's a bar in the back too. The music was definitely vibing. They were playing an interesting reggae mix of songs which I really dig. Wanted to make me dance with a cold cocktail in my hand. Lol I had Jeremy's cocktail suggestion, the Catalina wine mixer. It hit the spot and was so so refreshing. Just what I needed to cool off with. I did order two black berry lemon drop and that was super delicious aside from what I started with. I started off with the Maryland crab cakes. So tasty. It was decent size for two. The sauce for the crab cakes was not overwhelming and suited the crab cakes perfectly. The crab cakes were not dry, wet, fishy, or overcooked. I very much enjoyed them. I then ordered the classic lobster roll Connecticut style with a side of broccolini. The lobster roll was delicious with the extra side of butter. The lobster was cooked well, good flavor, and the bun was delicious and soft. The broccolini was cooked to perfection and still had a slight crisp to it. Yes, I finished the roll like I did the crab cakes. Lol Though dessert is not on their menu, Jeremy did verbalize that they do serve dessert. I figured since it was a leisurely day for me, I'll slowly take my time and eat as much as I could so it'll be worth a review. Lol So, I did get a key lime pie. It was smooth, light, the lime flavor was perfect, and of course i devoured that too. All I gotta say, is that, it helps to not have eaten anything and come hungry. I was able to fit all the food snuggly into my tummy. The food was delicious and did not disappoint. The service was excellent and Jeremy was very friendly.
