We came here since it is a popular brunch place in vancouver and it was so packed when we arrived. Luckily, we got seated right away near the window with a nice view outside. I got the salmon benedict and it was actually pretty flavorful. It came with a nice salad and hash browns on the side. However, one thing that bugged me was that the server asked me if i wanted avocado and caviar with my benedict, which I assumed was optional, but did not tell me whether they were extra charge or not. I ended up getting charge for those two and my total came out to be more than $30, which I was not super happy about. But the meal was delicious, but Im not sure whether i will return. read more

Came here on a Saturday morning since they only do reservations until 9:45am. I noticed around 10am they started filling up and people were lining up outside the restaurant. They have an inside, an enclosed heated patio and then the front patio which is not enclosed. The food was quite good. I found the salmon eggs Benny a bit on the saltier side but it might have just been the hash browns. The salmon rosti had nice flavours and textures but I wish they offered some salad to accompany the dish. read more

I actually really liked this place with one exception, which I will mention to end with. Walking distance to us....Awesome. Environment Unique to Vancouver....Awesome. Food Great.....Awesome. Service Warm & Friendly....Awesome. Enough of Awesome....here are some details: I loved the space and the environment. Why? The floor plan was great...you never felt like you were crowded and the amount of windows created a bright atmosphere even on a grey rainy day. The walls, painting, tables and chairs alongside the background music throughout blanketed this great little eatery as a classy, chic and cozy place to just chill, have drink and catch up with whoever you haven't called in a while, or that someone you just can't get enough of. The French Toast: Everything a French Toast should be, but sadly isn't in a lot of other places. Maxine's should give lessons. Just try it. Trust me. Salmon Benny: The Salmon was fresh, the english muffin beautifully toasted with a brush-butter finish and golden orange yolk perfectly poached medium as I like it. The potato rosti was seasoned and cooked with butter and finished crisp, as you bite through the crisp and into the flakey buttery grated potato melts on your tongue. The one and only reason it didn't receive a full 5 is because of the greens that accompanied my Salmon Benny. The greens were rotten (see pic.) I'm usually hard on both kitchen and service staff, and this is because I consider service to be an art form. Preparation of food, interacting with customers, presentation and delivery of the Chef's creation is an art that requires skill. In this case, due to the high skills demonstrated through the rest of our experience, I consider the rotten greens issue an honest oversight and most likely an isolated case. So yeah, I think I'd like to be back here and try their dinner service. read more

Rich but balanced. You can't stop eating. Equally good, the savory Dutch Baby. Airy with just the right amount of residual moisture within and light crispness from the pan. It is baked with shaved ham them topped with a fried egg. Pour on the monray sauce ( a basic béchamel with loads of cheese and white wine) and again, another hit. What to drink? Well if you are visiting the country or province, a good selection of well priced wines from BC including a light rose that paired well with the food. Not wanting to experiment? A well chosen selection of well priced old world wines are also on offer. Service is incredibly warm and friendly. Today we have brunch in Maxines Cafe. We want to order everything on the menu but at the end we ordered all the items on the festival brunch and dutch baby on the regular menu. We ordered foie gras scramble eggs on toast, black truffle scramble eggs on toast, spot prawn egg benny. I believed the only one we can find in Toronto is the black truffle scramble egg. /5 for Happy Hour - came on a Friday night for happy hour - we ordered the espresso martini, his dudeness, steak tartare, tuna crudo, fried chicken and chicken liver parfait. Both the drinks were both a major disappointment. The espresso martini was better than the dudeness. It has a lot of coffee flavour in it but lacked smoothness. The dudeness tasted like watered down Kahlua. The steak tartare had way to much parmesan cheese on it. It makes the flavour of the beef completely. The fried chicken was the highlight of the meal. It was super crispy and the honey butter flavour was a nice touch. The house pickles also went really well with everything. The tuna crudo - couldn't taste any smokiness, there was a lot of melon. Would not order this again. Chicken liver parfait - tasted over-whipped almost like the consistency of whipping cream but with the flavour of chicken liver. Very light. It went well with the sourdough. I would rank this higher than the tuna crudo and the steak tartare but not as good as the fried chicken. Overall: happy hour was pretty disappointment. Most of the flavours didn't hit the mark. I would stick to their brunch. Also if you don't like restaurants with machines that prompt you with a 18% tip as their first option, you should probably avoid this place. read more

I would consider Maxine one of the best French restaurant in Vancouver. The best thing about Maxine is that it's not trying to be pretentious. Just delicious food and good cocktails. Getting a table was easy as they have online reservations available. We started our meal with cocktails. I ordered the His Dudeness, a much refined version of a Brown Cow with whipped Korean coffee cream (dalgona), Absolut, Kahlua, oat milk and coffee. It was almost like a creamy dessert. As for appetizers, we shared the Tuna Crudo with grapefruit chili emulsion, jalapeno and olives; and then the Crispy Chicken that comes with tabasco honey butter and pickles. The tuna was so light and citrusy, while the chicken was crispy and sweet. For entree we shared the Moules Frites with soffritto, fennel and cider sauce. We sat inside in the back area, it was giving me Disneyland vibes. I got the lavender fizz lemonade which was very refreshing. It was so hard to decide what dish i wanted, but i went for the dutch baby (the sweet option). It w a s so delicious!! Came with pears, syrup and some whipped chanttily. (i butchered that). My friend got the smoked salmon rosti and he let me have a bite, i knew i'd have to get it next time. I came back this weekend during the May long weekend. My friend and i decided to come early to avoid any lines as it's usually very busy (we shot for opening 9am, but got there around 9:30). I'm always a fan of sitting on the patio, so they let us sit in the front patio. Beautiful white marble tables and Parisian cafe inspired chairs. This time, i just got the dish. Ordered the Smoked Salmon Rosti and man was it delish! I couldn't even finish it, it was so filling. Ingredients included poached egg, hollandaise, capers, light greenery, smoked salmon and the best part -the whipped dill cream. SO good. My friend ordered the bacon benny and also loved it. I love their hash brown patties. Service was wonderful, they came by several times, asking how we were doing, filling up our waters and asking how the food tasted. That's what i'm talking about! We also noticed the manager/GM was chatting with people on the patio. We flagged him down just to chat him up and give compliments to both the chef and the restaurant as a whole. Time your visit accordingly or you'll be waiting awhile to get in. Parking around here is very limited so perhaps über or cab your way over here. My Harwood Coffee was smooth with a punch = brandy. I really wasn't sure what to try ... the French toast & Dutch Baby are raved about but I played it safe & went with the Smoked Salmon Rosti. What a presentation ... magnificent! Very scrumptious & I really enjoyed it. I'm curious about the other menu items including their dinner service so yes I will go back. Excellent experience. I came here on a solo birthday trip to Vancouver and this was highly recommended by a friend. I checked out their website before going and knew I was going to order the smoked salmon rosti. It didn't disappoint! The fresh citrusy notes of the dill meshed perfectly with a rich gooey poached egg and the hollandaise sauce wasn't overpoweringly rich. The rosti it was all served on was crisp even to the last bite. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming; they were going for a European corner bistro vibe and it shows. The staff is EXCELLENT. They knew it was my birthday and multiple members of the wait staff wished me a happy birthday. I didn't feel like the rosti was going to be enough so they made a recommendation for some farm sausage that was a perfect pairing. To finish, they surprised me with a complimentary eclair that I was a little hesitant to eat for a brunch/breakfast closer. It was great. Not too sweet, just chocolately enough, and didn't make me feel like I was bursting at the seems when I walked out. I was super excited to try this place for brunch after seeing all the pictures and reviews, but I was a bit disappointed. Then I tried some of their dinner menu (takeout) and was disappointed again. For brunch, we got a seat at their heated patio which was warm enough for a cold rainy day, but I think the ambiance inside is better. They often have lineups to eat-in, so I'd recommend going early. I had the dutch baby and my friend had the falafel bowl. The dutch baby looked stunning, and the portion was generous, but taste-wise, lacking. It essentially tasted like a thicker/chewier crepe, plus a cheese sauce and some ham. After a few bites, it felt dry even with all the cheese sauce and I didn't feel like having more. My friend did not finish his falafel bowl, which was a small portion on salad, so take that as you will. Service was average, as good as you can expect for a busy restaurant. I ordered some of their dinner for takeout, which may have contributed to the quality of the food. Nonetheless, I felt like their food was just okay. The best dish we got was the steak tartare, which was great even for takeout. The tartare was tasty and rich, and the toasted sourdough it was on top of was still crunchy. The sablefish was both good and bad, mostly because the sauce was tasty but extremely salty at the same time. The linguine and meatballs was a pretty good deal - big portion of pasta with three large meatballs - but nothing special, and the red sauce was dry. Free 2 hour parking is available in the area (Hornby St, Beach Ave etc.). I've always had good experiences at their other restaurants (Tableau Bar Bistro and Homer St Cafe) so I expected more from Maxine's, especially for the price. After one meal here, I can already safely say Maxine's is my favorite brunch spot in town. They don't take reservations, so you have to give your name and phone number to the restaurant, and you'll get a text when your table is ready. My party of 3 checked in on a rainy Sunday at 11:10 am and got a text 30 minutes later, so be prepared to wait, especially on the weekend. The restaurant is bigger than it looks like on the outside, both for indoor and outdoor dining. We were brought to a cute table in their outdoor patio that wasn't visible from the front. We each ordered a different dish and had a bite of everyone else's dish, and everything was fantastic. I went with the omelette ($17), which comes with roasted mushrooms and leeks. WOW this was the best omelette I've had in ages... it was cooked SO softly but was still firm enough that it didn't fall apart when I cut into it. The mushrooms were fantastic as well. I was so impressed by this dish. My friends tried the eggs cocotte ($20) and the brioche french toast ($18). We weren't sure what the former was from the description, but it ended up being similar to a thick tomato soup served in a cast iron skilled with soft baked eggs, grilled bread, salad on top. It's a very different type of brunch dish, for sure, but the tomato soup had good flavor. Service was fantastic here as well. Our server checked in on us periodically and made sure we always had enough water. I can't gush enough about my brunch here. Will definitely brave downtown traffic and parking to come here again! She also makes a great flat white. Although the line may seem daunting at times, I've found tables for 2-3 people a relatively short wait. I was in town and heard stellar reviews about this place so I wanted to check it out. First off, ambiance is very cute - there are multiple sections in the restaurant that had different vibes. It overall gave airy (because of the "patio" seating) French cafe. Now onto the food. We ordered the brisket croque madame, smoked salmon rosti, and dutch baby, with my personal taste preference tanked in that order. Brisket croque madame was really decadent, and the smokiness of the brisket paired with the cheese sauce was a good combo. Side salad was tangy and cut the heaviness of the croque madame, so I thought it was a good pairing! Smoked salmon rosti was good - airy and fresh with the crème fraiche, herbs, and green sauce. My one qualm was the hash brown-like entity it was on was not the best pairing in my opinion, especially since it went soft and was no longer crispy. Dutch baby was pretty disappointing honestly - texture was not as good as other ones I've had and the flavor was quite plain. Given that it was most reviewed on Yelp, it disappointed me, but perhaps my expectations were set too high. Went to Maxine's for a Sunday brunch and had a great time! There's lots of holiday decorations right now so the whole place felt very festive. There was a line outside around 11AM when we arrived and you have to stay in line. Also the entire party needs to arrive before being seated. Luckily, the line moves very fast and we didn't have to wait long at all. There are a lot of drink options and some really cute holiday drinks. I got the maximosa which I really enjoyed. My only complaint is that it was quite small for its price. For brunch, I ordered the Dutch baby and it tasted super delicious. The portion was very large though and because of how rich it is, I had a hard time finishing it all. The items everyone else at our table ordered looked really great as well. I have celiac disease (gluten free, yo) and Maxine's accommodated almost anything on their menu for me and explained their precautions. We arrived right when this restaurant opened at 9am on a Wednesday. We sat outside, and the weather was perfect. I got the West End breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon, crispy potatoes, sourdough toast, and a small salad. It was so so so so tasty. The blueberry jam with the sourdough toast was pure perfection. My fiancé wanted to order the burger, but they were out of it...kind of weird. The waitress recommended the chicken sandwich, so he went with that. He HATED it. He ate the fries that came with it but barely touched the sandwich. He said there was a weird spice in the breading of the chicken, and he also didn't like that the chicken was dark meat. Went to try out Maxine's Cafe Bar back in February. I kept hearing so many great things about their brunch and dinner menu so I finally bit the bullet and went there for dinner. First of all, I love the location, space, ambience and interior of this restaurant. Especially during the evening you get this nice and romantic atmosphere. The interior is stunning and I can imagine what it looks like during the day when the sun is out (they have lots of large windows). Moving on to the service, I wasn't too sure how I felt. I couldn't really tell if our server was trying or not. She was a bit clumsy and spilled water over our table and my lap a few times, dropped our utensils and as she served our food, I could see her thumb touching the contents of our food and that was such a huge turn off for me. She was nice and attempted to make conversation but the attention to detail was seriously lacking. We ordered a some drinks and the fried chicken to share. The drinks were great and I REALLY loved the crispy chicken - it was perfectly crunchy while being juicy and tender inside. It was a 10/10 for me! I got the steak frites for the main while my friend ordered the gnocchi for herself. The main dishes were kinda disappointing. The steak was extremely salty and chewy. For the price you pay ($30), you would expect it to be a good cut but it felt like a cheap one. Fries were meh - salty and soggy. As for the gnocchi, we felt like it didn't have that pillowy and soft texture that is known to gnocchi. It was too mushy for our liking and extremely salty. Overall I wasn't exactly thrilled about our mains but the chicken and drinks ended up being a hit! I was hoping for a better experince. My first time stopping by, been walking by this place for what feels like forever. I like the idea of it being a coffee bar, but also a bar. They have a cute patio with some decent people watching. This place is simply too expensive for what u get. During happy hour, 3-5pm or 530pm a margaritas is still $12. That's not really a happy price. It's not a very large marg either. I wouldn't come here for happy hour again. Their happy prices are really jusr regular prices. I ordered their buger and that wasn't cheap. The burger was a step up from Burger King, nothing special. Not a very large patty. The sauce was just ketchup and mustard. Just some shredded lettuce and processed cheese. The fries were just meh as well. My friend ordered the meatballs and had to send them back. They were quite dry and such a small amount for $16. This nice place for brunch is located at Maxine st. Went there for brunch and liked it there. Benedict with salmon tastes amazing, definitely worth recommending. omelette was also good, I liked the mushrooms in it! But it was too big that I can't have it all eaten up haha! Service there was also very warm and kind. The waitress lady ask several times if everything was good and if we needed more coffee, and offered boxes for us to take food we haven't finished. Prices are reasonable, I would go for brunch again. read more
