Then, I got the buffalo quesadillas- it's just sauce poured inside & the cheese was like out of a bag from stop & shop- not melted AT ALL. My daughter was forced to get a big burger due to no kids menu, it was charred. She spit the first bite out and didn't touch it after that. She now said "I don't like burgers anymore" of course ! Took the family this evening to Maxs with great expectations after getting the family together. They had a few good beers on tap so I was cautiously optimistic that the dining experience would be great. Unfortunately, 40 minutes later the burgers came out like hockey pucks and the wait staff was completely unapologetic and rude. The food was absolutely terrible. To top it off they had no reservations in charging full freight for this awful food. No matter what meat temp you ask for, they were all cooked the same way: well done and burned. We'll be getting burgers elsewhere for a while and hopefully they'll get this straightened out. A great restaurant to bring the whole family when you're looking for some quick comfort food or something to eat while you're watching the football game on tv. Hot dogs, terrific hamburgers (grilled to perfection), chicken baskets, chicken wings and even quesadillas. My personal favorite is their hamburgers with BBQ sauce and onion rings inside. Fairly decent prices, but you're paying for the good fast-food quality, between $4-8 usually. They even serve deep fried twinkies and oreos for dessert. I have yet to try these but it's on my list of things to try next. I was also impressed but the cleanliness of this restaurant. Here is an example of how ONE employee can ruin an experience at a restaurant. On Saturday, August 11, at 2:30pm, we arrived for lunch. We chose to sit at the bar. That was the problem. The bartender gave menus to everyone but us. I had to get up to get some. We got no Please, Thank You, Your Welcome...etc. yet everyone else was treated friendly by this guy. They were drinking. We were having Diet Coke. When he delivered the food, he had a look of disgust on his face. But when we left, leaving a $4 tip on a $15.78 bill (6 tenders, 2 sodas) he was the most vocal. "Thank You!" Their prices for chicken tenders are on the high side, especially if you want fries, (3 tenders and fries, $8.95, $5.95 without) but the tenders are very tasty. Frankly, Chicken Tenders alone, 5 stars. Add in Mr. Grumpy's attitude, No stars. But they are tasty. The rest of the staff? VERY friendly! Oh well. Max's expanded to include the laundromat that was next to it. It's in the same plaza as Gumbo. We left at 3pm, as did Mr. Grumpy. I don't give out many 5 star reviews but I think that Max's in Dartmouth MA is something that is special and deserves it. First of all let me say that I have been to Max's four times now and each time have walked away thinking "Wow, I'm going to bring one of my friends here tomorrow" but let me not get too ahead of myself and start from the beginning. Max's is a quaint little burger shack located on State St in Dartmouth (Right next to the famed "Gumbo's Chinese Restaurant". Max's is small inside but it has some nice window stools and a friendly atmosphere. Where Max's shines is their food seconded only by their hospitality. Now, if you have read any of my reviews in the past you will see that passion goes a long way with me. It is always about the little things, the details. Things that other places overlook, and Max's has passion in spades. Their burgers are flame broiled to perfection, while staying juicy and flavorful along the way. The size of their burgers is very impressive, especially for the price that they are charging for these things. There is no doubt about it, for about a buck more than you would pay at one of those "fast food" places you can have a burger that is personally made for you and is as fresh as you would hope for every time you visit. The owners of the business take great pride in their food, and they should. Burgers are masterfully crafted with different flavor combinations and served up to perfection. My favorite so far is definitely the Hawaiian burger which consists of a grilled piece of pineapple, bacon and bbq sauce. My second try of this burger I added jalepenos just to put some kick in there but, the saltiness of the grilled pineapple accompanies the burger and the bacon to add this amazing balance of flavors. The Sloppy Burger is a sight to behold... but NOTHING you could ever dream of picking up and eating. Imagine the best Chili Cheese dog you've ever had... now remove the hoddog and put a delicious all beef patty that has been grilled to perfection on a fresh hot sesame seed bun... Their potato skins are a completely different level of amazing. Filled with cream cheese, bacon and cheese and fried to a sinful golden deliciousness. Honestly, for the money I cannot think of a better meal you can find in this area. My wife and I got two enormous burgers and an order of those amazing potato skins and it came in well under $20... To say that this place is a MUST VISIT is an understatement and I hope everybody comes out to this wonderful local treasure and gives them a try. Juicy and tasty ( I think I detected a little A1 flavoring perhaps). Husband had a Portuguese burger which combines ground beef and ground linguica into a patty. He said it was great. The girls got steamed hot dogs, which one girl didn't eat and the other girl choked on. Unless you're getting coney or chili toppings, I'd probably try the grilled. I'm having a tough time here cause we (not realizing) arrived 15 mins prior to close at 8. Tom got a double burger which he enjoyed, Ben got 3 pc tenders with fries which he did'nt...the chicken being marinated and tasting odd to an 11 year old, And I got a "sloppy" burger with a side of onion rings. The burger was way overcooked, I tasted the char an hour later, and there was way too much chili sauce and chhese "sauce" as in nacho cheese sauce. My husband and I decided to give this place a try after I saw it on phantom gourmet yesterday. The food looked great on tv, big surprise! They are home of the BAB (big ass burger food challenge). My husband and I got a burger he got the sloppy burger and I got the buffalo burger and we split the potato skins. After biting in to my burger I got a mouth full of charred burger, as if they haven't scraped the grill clean in a decade. I can't get the taste out of my mouth, I didn't finish it needless to say and as I type this I'm actually getting sick thinking about it. The potato skins weren't anything spectacular either, they're "stuffed" with sour cream cheese and bacon, way too much sour cream even for me and I love condiments. My husbands burger was just ok from what he said, he has no desire to return either. The chili and cheese they topped his burger with is the stuff you get out of a bag and it was just gross looking. Wasn't impressed. I could grill a burger better and I get paid a lot less for it. The girl who was taking our order was very nice and she brought our food out to us and made sure to ask how everything was and if we needed anything, upon walking in it was as if the men working the grill hadn't seen a person in a year, they just sat and stared like they were in awe lol. Max's is a small take out with 4-5 tables and a counter with stools facing the window. It was clean and the staff was very friendly. The menu consists of Burgers, Dogs, and Wings. The Holy Trinity of take out. This was my first trip so I ordered the Coney dog steamed with onions and mustard. The onions were diced small the way they should be. The Coney sauce was good and the dog and bun were perfectly steamed. They also have an all beef grilled. What's better than choices? I also had a side of fresh hand cut onion rings. Lightly breaded and seasoned and cut very thin. They had a good onion taste and were not dried out or overcooked, and well salted which is important. I have had food from this establishment 3 times now, and have waited to see if I got the same quality every time. I can tell you that indeed I did!!!!! Sunday my husband stopped in to get a couple of burgers (for friends) and a seafood plate for myself. He RAVED about the burger he had the Hawaiian and loved it! I am not a fan of coleslaw (unless it's KFC), so I did not care for that either. The potato skins were also good, full of butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon! they were so yummy and really hot even after taking them home to NB... Yesterday, we stopped in again since my husband was in love with his burger and I tried the Hawaiian and it was AMAZING!!!!!!! The combination of the pineapple, BBQ sauce and flame broiled burger was sooo good! There is bacon involved, but in all honestly everything drowns it out (so it may not be needed) I LOVE THIS BURGER! I first got them and they were extremely burned and dry on the inside so i then sent them back and had them replaced. This time they were undercooked, batter kept falling off and overly spicy for some reason. My grandmother had ordered a ceaser salad and got asked if she wanted ceased dressing for that...like obviously, that's what makes it a ceaser salad.
