I had been going to Great Clips for a long time and usually left disappointed with uneven fades and that rushed assembly line feeling mixed with forced small talk. I've been coming to Maxwell's now for several years and I've always appreciated the good haircuts and customer service that I've gotten here. I have received both haircuts and straight shaves and they are indulgently luxurious and enjoyable, especially the hot towel and lather. I usually see Jessee Buck for my haircuts and shaves, but I've also used Pat Sutton a number of times when Jessee is gone or on vacation and he is equally talented and a good guy. Bring cash as the don't take cards, but there is a handy ATM on site for quick cash withdrawals. Their prices have slowly climbed over the years, but I believe this is due to increasing costs for their materials and time and truly, you get what you pay for in life, whether it is a haircut, car detailing or oil change. I came in here after 8 hours on the road, starving, and needing to get a cut and shower for dinner that night. I lucked out and booked the appt like 15 minutes before I got to town, showed up 5 mins early, and my barber Josh called me up right on time. Punctuality was key for me today. The guys in here are a chill bunch. No fake pompery which some people call "customer service" which I actually appreciate. I hate plastering fake smiles on or wasting time being badgered with too much small talk. The cuts I saw leave all looked great. I loved mine when he spun me around. The taper was clean, front looked good. But... After a shower and dry I thought different. I asked for a fade on the sides and the top to be left as long as possible. At home I found that the back of my head was faded quite a bit over the top of my head. I lost quite a bit of long growth and now not only can I not pull it back because it flops forward to a bun and looks ridiculous, I also can't leave it alone because I have this long tuft on the front and nothing on the top back half. I have to wear hair product everywhere now. It looks great combed and he did a good job on the technical aspect of cutting it but somehow there was a big miscommunication there about "kept as long as possible on top" and where "back" stops and "top" starts. I tipped 20 for the barbershop mirror impression but I probably would have just left kind've pissed if I'd known about how much growth I lost in the back. It happened to me a year ago @ Supercuts in Reno. I'm going through a ton of surgeries right now so I don't have a lot to spend but I thought I'd try somewhere that costs more with a bit of history hoping for better results. The fade and line-up were better here but overall I am more disappointed. Still three stars because I think it's a great place with an awesome atmosphere inside. You can look at the walls all day and aren't badgered by chatty old ladies. Happened to stumble upon this humble abode while I was in town during the 4th of July weekend. I was in need of a much-needed haircut, and I wanted to experience getting one outside of California, since the majority of barber shops, including my go-to one - was closed. My family friend who had recently moved to the Damonte Ranch neighborhood from the Bay Area had suggested that I give this place a try - in addition to his side-note, for me to be a 'guinea pig' to try this place out for a haircut, haha. It would be my first time to get a haircut in the Silver State, and I was excited to get one - so I could get freshly faded and tapered once again, despite the quarantine cuts I managed to do. LOL. This barbershop doesn't have its own parking lot, but there's ample street parking along the sides & within the neighborhood - it is right near the Downtown region, and it may seem sketchy and run-down to the newbies in the area, but don't let that deter you from checking this place out & getting freshened up, especially if you're on vacay and/or visiting from the West Coast. The shop is small, yet it is bursting at its seams with a vibrant and vintage atmosphere, filled with arts and knick-knacks - giving that old-school barbershop feel - along with a super chill vibe. It's a great place for fellas to unwind a bit, and talk hardcore about the arts culture, sports & current events. The barber I had when I came for a haircut in early July recently moved to Commonwealth in the Downtown neighborhood, but I had the pleasure of getting a cut from Alex H., who's attention to detail is spot on, in addition to being very professional yet personable, especially to a first-timer like me! And if you've had the same one you know the anxiety with trusting your precious hair to a stranger! I have been exclusively using Maxwells barbershop for year's now. The guys are great and the atmosphere is awesome. Josh takes great care of me everytime! He has never flaked on me, has never left me with a bad cut and takes his craft very seriously. I take my 6 year old son to see him too. Made my appointment with Jeromy to be his second client. Showed up a few minutes early, checked in and waited in the car. Gotta do the COVID thing, ya know. On time and into the chair. Jeromy asked a few questions to get an idea of what cut I wanted. Being an old man with a contemporary haircut, I thought he might have a difficult time with this. On went the protective garment and he was off. Clip clip here......buzzing clippers there. We chatted comfortably the entire time which made me relax. I believe all men get a bit wonky in case the cut comes out wrong. Me....a bit but I figure it will grow out in case he goofs up. Thirty minutes later he spins the chair around. I thought long and hard about making this review and initially I chose not to write it because I hate to be the guy that complains about something, but I feel it's necessary to inform people that there are certainly better options out there. I'll sum it up this way: If you want your haircut to be a science, which the most accuracy and precision you can get out of it is the outcome, then Maxwell's is your place...as long as Pat is cutting your hair. From my experience, Joe and Nick don't care as much about the details as Pat does...he'll spend a good 30-45 minutes on each person's head of hair (but Joe and Nick are nicer). That being said, it becomes arguable that the value of this attention to detail drastically decreases when there are so many other negative qualities associated with receiving a perfect cut. Maxwell's Barbershop is like an abusive relationship that you can't seem to break away from. Even though you know it's wrong, you keep going back for the same punishment because you like one or two of those qualities so much. Yes, if you go to Maxwell's and Pat cuts your hair, he will go over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything is perfect and there's not a single stray hair out of line on your head. But you need to ask yourself: is that really worth a 1.5 or 2 hour wait? The answer is no, it's not, because there are many other places that, even though they don't spend 30-45 minutes on your head, give great, even better cuts than at Maxwell's. And if Maxwell's delivers precise, almost scientific haircuts, then you might ask: How can another barbershop deliver a better cut than Maxwell's? The answer is because even though Pat claims that cutting hair is his art, the simple fact is, there's no art. He will give you no input. He will not make any changes to what you request. He'll sit you down, cut your hair exactly the way you ask for it (which is both great and terrible), go over it with a fine tooth comb, and then send you on your way. That's not art. That's cold science. Well, that might be great...if you know exactly what you want and want to look like the 100 other people that go to him and ask for the same cut. That's where Maxwell's and I disagree. I don't always know exactly what I want. I do sometimes want the opinion of the person that went to school for their trade. I do want the person that's cutting my hair to (if I ask them to) make their own suggestions and have some kind of idea as to how they can improve what I'm asking for. There's nothing wrong with that. But Pat will make you feel like there is. Which is why I'm giving you 1-star, Pat. It's not because I care or my feelings are hurt that you do things the way that you do. I appreciate science. I appreciate precision. But I think your business model will eventually fail you. I'm sure you guys make a lot of money doing what you do. But sooner or later people will get fed up with waiting 1-2 hours for their cut when you guys won't take appointments. I certainly am tired of it. What I'm more tired of is your attitude problem when I sit in the chair. Yes Pat, I'm an idiot when it comes to hair. Yes Pat, it did take you "too many questions to figure out" what I wanted. My bad bro. Guess my money's not worth you having to spend that extra 60 seconds on those questions. For anyone reading this. Break up with Maxwell's. BJ's Pro Shop will treat you much better than Maxwell's. Their cuts are (in my opinion, obviously) superior to Maxwell's, they have free drinks while you wait, have a pool table, and they take appointments. It's $3 more but you'll probably agree that an hour of your time is worth much more than that. read more

Lets see after coming here for about a year i finally got fed up. Sure their haircuts are good, but are they amazing? Are they worth the awkward cringe feeling you get every time you sit inside this barbershop... NO. -They dont say hi. They dont greet you or welcome you. You should pretty much know everything about them and what they do as soon as you walk in there because thats not their job apparently. And im not expecting a "Hello welcome to Maxwells" but at least a nod, at least a "wassup" NOTHING! -They dont say bye. While Ive been getting a haircut or waiting for one, as soon as a client leaves, they start bad mouthing them. Not always, but it does happen. Who knows what theyve said about me as soon as i leave. -They dont talk to you. They rather talk amongst themselves about other clients, about hockey, baseball, or some drama that happened to one of their friends. Inappropriate sometimes. -They dont keep track of whos next, because thats the clients job. The first time i came to this place, two people cut in front of me because i didnt know i had to know my own place in line. Theres no sign-in sheet. Theres no appointment. You pretty much have to ask the other people waiting for a haircut to see who was the last person who walked in. Ohhhh but... -They love to watch their sports on TV. Constantly looking through the TVGuide on the screen to see what sports are on. -They love to stay silent. No music. No conversation with their clients. All three barbers stay quiet when theyre not talking about drama or other clients of course. Theyre introverts. -They love to shit talk. Talking bad about their clients they had a problem with in the past to the other barbers is constant. I heard the barber once say "Oh that dude wanted a Justin Timberlake haircut, The fuck i look like, do i look like the type of guy who knows Justin Timberlakes haircut, fuck that guy, so i gave him my own haircut" And the other barbers just laughed while the clients sitting waiting for the haircut looked at each other like, "damn, they be talking shit behind peoples back?" Another time the main barber was talking about how he doesnt even feel like coming in anymore, because he's tired of some the customers. He said this to the other barbers in front of the customers! ---Bottom line, Just look at the rest of the reviews for this barbershop. You got first timers raving about how awesome it is just like how i was when i first got a haircut at this place. After a while, you see its true colors. And you almost dont even feel welcomed. These guys are awesome! I've been getting my hair cut here for over a year now and they always do a great job. After going to Maxwell's a few times I went to three other barbershops to see if Maxwell's really was the best cut. After the third mediocre cut I stuck with the guy's at Maxwell's . Pat (the owner) and nick give great haircuts, even the newer guy Joe does a great job. He might take a little bit longer cutting your hair but speed will come with time, and the couple times he's cut my hair it's been perfect. So don't worry about which barber you're going to get, they all do a fantastic job. I think the biggest complaint I hear is the wait or that the staff is rude. The wait is completely understandable, theses guys are awesome and people in town know it, so the get a lot of business. They also make sure they take the time to give a good cut instead of turning and burning their customers. As far as them being rude, it's old school barbershop rules...come in, use your eyes and see who's there, then watch for who's coming in. Once you see the last person from when you came in getting a cut, you're next...what a concept. And yes, some of the guys have been a bit short with customers over time but I can see how it would get old/annoying if people kept coming in asking the same dumb questions day in and day out. I didn't get a cut here, and I never will. The customer service is terrible and the barber seemed more interested in whatever was on the TV than greeting customers. After walking in I stood in front of the barber for a good 30 seconds before even being acknowledged. Then I got a dirty look and a "have a seat bro." When I asked for the wait time I was shot another dirty look, a shoulder shrug and an "I don't know...45 minutes?" Asking for an approximate wait time is not unreasonable. The fact that these guys don't care enough about their business to greet a customer should give you pause if you're considering letting them anywhere near your hair. The Story I have been cutting my own hair since I was 15-years-old; and at the ripe ol' age of 27, I decided, I can afford to see a professional. I'm also SUPER picky when it comes to my hair, just ask my wife. But on a recommendation from a friend, I gave these guys a try, and I've since retired my clippers. Who Are These Guys? Professional is the word. These guys operate a two-man show like you've never seen before. Each offer their own style to cutting your hair, quick and precise to calculated and efficient, but each will work meticulously to get your look just the way you want it. I don't know Pat too well, but Nick is my main-guy, especially since he's an L.A. Dodgers fan. Haters gon' hate. Worth The Wait When you get to this place, you're best advised to either arrive first thing, or be willing to wait it out, because words out that these two are some of the best at their craft. As an added bonus: They both finish off your haircut with a oldtime razor edge finish, using this warm moose/foam concoction that feels amazing. Although, they seem a bit intimidating to the uninitiated, they're both really cool guys, and welcome conversation. For example, I've talked about everything from sports and family to tech startups and Reno's future economic development, with the seasoned duo. Bring cash. I want to say they take credit/debit, but for the sake of time, etc. take out a $20, and tip them well. They are charging about $5-$10 less for the quality cut you get. And, if you're really timid and afraid of human interaction -- bring a friend along! It's a great way to pass the time and not feel so inclined to not seem, well, awkward. Rumor Has It ... I went in on a recommendation from a friend(who told me about the long waits but said it was worth it) I was greeted by one of the barbers pointing to the waiting people and(before I said a word) says "this is the line"..."hour and a half wait". I was kind of shocked at that type of greeting but put it aside. I know they open at 10am so I asked if I returned the next day at 9 to wait if that would be a good idea. Another barber just shrugs his shoulders and says "you'll probably have company". Ha! You guys lost a customer. A simple "hi how's it going?" Would have kept me there, I was going to read anyway. I know that customer service is a dying craft in this country but it is embalmed and mummified at Maxwells.
