Got to visit this little bar recently few weeks ago with my boyfriend before he went on a trip. He recommended this place so I was pretty excited since I've never been!They specialize in quality tequila and mezcal! The entrance is somewhat hidden and I almost walked past it. From the entrance there is a tiny patio and down the stairs little cute bar area. Down stairs is the bathroom and up stairs is larger seating! We got the Pine and Passion and Spicy Rabbit!, along with beef quesadilla and some guacamole. The drink menu eat the time was limited but I believe they will have their entire menu again soon with 40+ drinks! The Spicy Rabbit was delicious and packed full of flavor. On the sweeter side but very unique cause it's made out of carrot liquor! Pine and passion super refreshing and another great choice if you don't want spicy. The guacamole and beef quesadilla were delicious as well. Earlier that day I had invited a few friends to join us who both said no, but then suddenly turned up. The maya mezcal wasn't too busy and was super nice to re seat us upstairs since we ended up with 7 people total. My friends ordered the grilled avocado, chicken and more guacamole. All dishes were delicious. Grilled avocado was definitely a first and very interesting, but chicken was definitely better lol. I had such a great time I brought my brother for quick drink who was visiting New York later that week. He loved the spicy rabbit as well and had a great time chatting with bartender. Overall a solid bar and cute date spot. Will def be back to try their other drinks and food! Definitely recommend this place for anything from quick drinks, dinner, date to girls night! read more

I miss what this place used to be! Formerly Mayahuel, Mayamezcal is a small, dark and intimate cocktail bar and restaurant on east 6th. We popped in early Saturday evening and was maybe one of two tables (it was early on a Saturday and it's also dark inside on one of the first really beautiful, warm Spring days in NYC). The decor has changed over the years (less character, especially upstairs in the dining area), and service was overall okay. We got a few drinks, an order of chips and salsa aka Salsa Fresca, and a few food items off the menu to try. Food: Salsa Fresca (Chips and Salsa): was extremely overpriced at $10 for a small handful of half-stale chips and what felt like a tablespoon of flavorless salsa. Camarones El Diablo (Shrimp in a spicy Diablo sauce): 5 medium size shrimp for $16 in a tasty, spicy sauce, with some warmed up store-bought flour tortilla. Steak Quesadilla: the best meal one of us got - steak was a flavorful ribeye and the quesadilla overall had plenty of protein, too. It had a good balance of cheese, steak, tortilla, and pickled onions. Trio of Tacos: nothing special, and again at $20 ? Overpriced. Cocktails: One of us ordered the Mezcal Sour, and I got the Spicy Rabbit - both were not very boozy and definitely not worth $18 each. This was a bit of a disappointment, honestly. And considering what Mayahuel used to be, I hope they can make a comeback. But, based on this visit, we won't be back. read more

It was a cold night and we were warmly welcomed by Alina to settle into the upstairs nook. I went with one of the weirdest cocktail that stood out - Spicy Rabbit. It tasted like Mezcal V8, which I totally enjoyed but my friends found it a bit too healthy. My partner's Mexican Porn Star was a popular hit! First, let me say the service was great. My server was as helpful as he possibly could be, and didn't neglect me in any way. But the food and drink are where things fell off. Maybe my expectations were off for this spot. It sells itself as "the hottest Mexican cocktail bar in the city." I wasn't even expecting all that. I just thought I would have some great tequila or mezcal drinks and maybe some great latin food. But I was super underwhelmed. I had the carne asada to the tune of 45 dollars. Sold as grilled gras fed Angus NY strip, it was under seasoned and fatty with no char. Pretty chewy. The frites were underwhelming as well. They were super standard and possibly frozen. They were hot and crispy, but they were not 45 dollar frites. Please note that the in-house menu prices are different than the online prices (I get it, inflation/capitalism). The online price for the carne asada was 35. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the roasted avocado cilantro pesto (shiitake mushrooms, baby veggies and chipotle aioli) better. Or the organic black beans and veggies. Or maybe small plates are the way to go, with basics such as chicken or steak quesadillas. The cocktails were ok. I had Tommy's margarita, made only with tequila, agave, and lime juice. I asked my server which would be best, Tommy's or the el Classico. He said the el Classico was sweeter, so be aware. I think I had another cocktail as well, but it wasn't memorable. From the photos, it appears to be something garnished with mint, though I can't find anything on the menu served with mint. There are some basil drinks, so maybe they subbed. I remember discussing the lalaldies (blanco tequila, apple liquor, fresh basil, lemon) with my server. The other recommendation I considered from my server was pine and passion, made with mezcal, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and passion fruit. So maybe it was one of those. I wavered between three and four stars because for one, service was great. Two, it wasn't crowded and it was easy to get in. But ultimately, there are so many better Mexican/Latin places in the city, with a better cocktail program to boot. Ultimately I went with three stars when I realized I wouldn't return. read more

I wanted to boycott this place because after Ravi de Rossi closed down Mayahuel, the new owners then reopened the bar, first under the same name and tried to pass as the same bar. Ridiculous! Coincidentally, a friend wanted to check out this bar because of the "great reviews". I told her the back story and we came for one drink. Such a letdown!! The quality of the drinks do not even compare at all! I rarely give 1 star reviews. If they didn't try to pull such a shitty thing as use the same name as Mayahuel I may have simply given them 2 stars. Had been wanting to check this place out and it did not disappoint. Went on a whim around 9:30 or so on a Saturday night. It was crowded but we were still able to walk in and grab two seats at the bar. As many others have said, the bar feels like a hole in the wall kind of place, which I think adds to the experience of sipping mezcal cocktails. We had the "Dia de Paga" and the "Silver Fox", both were very good (Dia de Paga was my favorite, the earthiness of the mezcal really works great with the jalapeño that's in the drink). The bartender also gladly made me a mezcal old fashioned ("Oaxacan old fashioned" if you're at a certain other cocktail bar about a block east on 6th), which was a great one to end the night on. They have a large selection of mezcal in lots of different agave varietals, so I'm excited to go back and try some mezcal flights in the future. Will definitely be back! read more

This place might be hard to locate at nighttime d/t the lack of any sort of signage, unless I'm blind. I'm not super familiar with basically any other neighborhood than my own current (midtown, BiTcHeZzZzZ) and past (UES) locales so maybe this is the norm for the E Village but this place was like....kinda.....dodgy/sketchy in appearance. Not in a genuinely dangerous way, more like a COOL way, like I was actually super intrigued by it. I felt compelled to inquire about the probability of having the same number of organs when I leave as when I enter to which the bouncer replied, "depends on how much you drink". I'm always down for a little suspense. We were immediately shuffled through a reddish hue, dimly lit ground floor of the restaurant and up the stairs. Right on cue after I was telling my companion how I recently ate shit while running, I tripped on the top stair. Haven't even started drinking yet. Classic. We were squeezed into this tight table situation, where you can barely squeeze to the booth side without your ass joining the next table's conversation. Menus greeted us on the table. It's one of those situations where indecisive people are like FML because their menus are about as long as my reviews. Pages and pages of drinks. Like I want to make an informed decision but there's no way I'm reading all of those words. I settled on something with islands, like "it's my island" or "i'm taking this island" or "I'm actually never going to this fucking island ever" no jk it's not the last one. It had tequila something pomegranate I think and everything else escapes me, sorry I know that's not helpful. It was actually really good. Tangy. My only problem was due to the sheer volume of the glass that consisted of ice, there were like legitimately about two drops of drink in my glass. The drinks are $15 which IMO is pretty steep to begin with. If i'm paying what I could literally get an entree for elsewhere, I expect more than two drops and a glass of ice. We also ordered the "tortilla plate" or whatever. Basically chips and guac and 2 salsas. Salsas were really tasty, the red one was very almost overwhelmingly smokey and the green one was decently spicy. Guac was like...tasteless and boring. How do you fuck up guac? For god's sake throw some salt or lime juice or pepper or something in there. Chips were good I guess. I actually don't mind a few plain chips every now and then. Service was good, friendly, and speedy. Place was packed. I don't particularly think it's worth coming back to but it is a unique and cool place to visit once. read more

I was genuinely impressed by this place. Not only was it a pretty random Yelp find, but it was one of those "you probably wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it because the sign is microscopic/nonexistent" kinda places. I made a 6pm reservation - and i'm glad I did. It's a small place that books up fairly quickly, so unless you want to eat at the bar, plan ahead. Speaking of the bar, do yourself a favor and get there early and grab a drink. The food and drinks are all in one menu; one page is food and the rest is cocktails and mezcal. That's not the say the food is bad (it was excellent), but Mayahuel focuses on creating unique drinks - your classic margarita isn't even on the menu (though you can still get one). Every cocktail is $15, so spend your time looking at the ingredients rather than the price, it's not going to get any cheaper. I got the Randy Cocktail and absolutely loved it. A close second was the I Love Lamp, and we also got another one...apple something (the name escapes me), which was also quite good. Even though I said it's not on the menu, you can still get a traditional margarita, which I definitely did. $10 margaritas make an appearance on Mondays, an even better reason to go out after the first day of the workweek. Back to the drinks (yes, I know we never left) - there are countless bottles, a variety of drink tools, and "beverage masters" that really know how to pour (and shake the hell out of) a really good drink. It's almost as fun watching them make it as it is drinking it. Don't forget to eat - there are some tables downstairs and a small upstairs that has an open floor area that looks down to the bar. There really aren't any windows (save for the limited indoor porch seating) so no matter what's going on outside, you will feel like you are in a different world. Supremely cool. Consume tacos; we tried chicken and pork, and while both were good, i'd lean towards the pork. The guac and salsa is a must (green salsa is the best), and the Chilaquiles were gigantic, we took most of that one home and it warmed up nicely the following evening. I think it's safe to say anything you get will be delicious. I really wish we had more room for dessert, because those churros looked so good.. Not only is Monday $10 not-on-the-menu margarita night, but it's also half price tacos. Even though drinks weren't cheap, the food is really reasonably priced; from what I remember nothing was over $16. Come for the drinks & atmosphere, hang around for dinner, walk out happy. Surprisingly there wasn't much of a crowd around 7pm, but imagine it gets more packed later in the evening. They specialize in mezcal, but they have a full bar and can make you anything. My friend was in the mood for a hot drink, so the bartender decided to invent a cocktail for her. In a matter of minutes he whipped up a hot ginger cocktail with freshly pressed strawberry juice and spices that smelled almost as good as it tasted. I went with a classic margarita which I enjoyed, though it was a little awkward to drink since it was crammed with large cubes of ice. A friend who's really into the NY speakeasy scene took me here a few days ago and I loved it!! I wouldn't have figured it out on my own that there's such a cute bar behind the facade that appears like a dark wooden shack. I wasn't sure how accessible this place is especially on Saturday night, but we got in within 10 minutes. The bouncer was courteous and very nice, unlike some of other speakeasies. I really dig the atmosphere, love the fact that upstairs and downstairs have different flairs. Upstairs is very boudoir, while downstairs is dark, intimate, and a bit "dia de los muertos". Mayahuel scored high in terms of the decor! Me encanta!!!! This bar apparently specializes in Mexican drinks, heavily focused on tequila and mezcal based drinks. I had a blackberry cobbler which had a very interesting smoky flavor of Mezcal mixed with the fruity taste of blackberry. They also serve food, which is like a tapas-size plate serving small bites. Definitely get tortilla chips, they are served with 3 different delicous dips: guacamole, salsa verde, and smoked tomato salsa. Camaron Y Vieras Con Chorizo was "A-OK " for me, it was too overcooked and dry. This is one of a kind bar it's worth checking out! Solid drinks here, if you get the Día de Paga, which is a mezcal, ginger, grapefruit drink. Otherwise, I'm not quite sure I would come here again because the experiences my friends had weren't that great. One of my friends had asked for his mezcal sazerac to be made a specific way - up, but when he got the drink, it was served on the rocks. For $16, I would hope the wait staff and bartender know these terminologies and serve paying customers what they need. Hard truth but just unfortunate for my friend who had to pay the full price. The drinks are pretty cute though and the classic margaritas are great! The food smelled great, but the options were pretty limited, and pricey. The ambiance and atmosphere is pretty close - with multiple booths and mafia-style decorations though. The new manager also came and introduced himself with free shots on the house so that was so nice of him. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the same great experience that everyone else on Yelp seems to have had. My friend and I arrived a bit before 6 and finally located the inconspicuous front door. We realized they wouldn't upon until 6, so we walked around a bit. At 5 after 6, we came back. Door still wasn't open. We awkwardly knocked and waited until someone finally opened the door. We were the first ones there. We sat at the bar. The bartender handed us our drink menus and answered any questions we had. Some of the drinks were too obscure for me. I am definitely adventurous but I wasn't feeling most of the drinks. I decided to "play it safe" so I ordered the "Watermelon Sugar". Sounds safe, right? Wrong. It tasted like poison. I found myself taking huge gulps so I could finish the drink faster. I also tried my friend's drink-smoke and oil. That's exactly what it tasted like-burning oil. Disgusting.
