Here are two of the biggest reasons why I can say this: 1) Dr. Mayer was the first dental office I ever went to where the doctor cleaned my teeth instead of a dental hygienist. Due to my tiny mouth opening, it requires a great deal of time, patience, and care to clean my teeth. I went in for a routine dental cleaning and left feeling like it was barely done. The hygienist didn't use the ultrasonic scaler (just the hand tools), and it felt rushed. I still had visible tartar on my teeth afterward, which defeats the whole purpose of getting a professional cleaning. I hadn't had a cleaning in awhile and had 3 cavities, which she proved to me by showing me how they "stick" and then she didn't force any procedure on me. She took the time to explain the filling process to me and answered all of my questions politely. I went ahead with the fillings and bought the Individual Dental Plan which included a 20% discount on procedures and 2 cleanings for the year. A good price considering how precious our teeth are, how often we use them, and how long we will need them for. The rooms have a great view overlooking Columbus Circle! Bought a Groupon for a cleaning. Read the fine print which said 1 per person. called over to find out if I had ever been there before as I've used a few Groupon's trying to find a regular dentist. They checked my info and said I was never there before. So I bought the Groupon, made the appointment, took off from work to get a cleaning. Once I was there and waited for a while, Dr Mayer came out and informed me that I had already used a Groupon once before in the past. I told her that I had called and they said I had never been there. She stated that the Groupon is only for one time usage. She said she'd be happy to give me a cleaning for $200. Was kind of aggravated that I went through all this and made sure to call in advance of even buying the Groupon. Since they screwed up, which she admitted, you would think they would've honored the Groupon. apparently they weren't very memorable the first time as I didn't leave a review after the other cleaning. read more

Went in for just a regular cleaning. I don't have cavities so that's all I usually get. While I was there they checked and said I'd need a deep cleaning. I knew this from my previous dentist in another state so I went ahead with the very expensive procedure ($1000). It was half the price at my other dentist so that should have told me something. I'd had minimal gum bleeding so I knew I needed to get it done. It was super painful and my mouth hurt for days. One part of my mouth still hurts really bad. I also have, a few months later, after brushing and flossing regularly, extreme bleeding in my gums that I never had before. Deep cleaning is supposed to eliminate that, that's one reason to get it done. I made an appointment to go back and see what the problem was but cancelled because the experience was so bad and I didn't ever want to feel that kind of pain again. The dentist actually told me that the excessive bleeding was normal. That's crazy. I'll have someone else fix the expensive job they messed up. I would recommend you see another dentist, this has been a nightmare for me and I've never had problems with my teeth ever. Going to the dentist is a very traumatic experience for me and let's face it these days with all the reviews about dentist up selling you on other products you kind of wonder if these dentist really care about their patients first. I was referred by a friend to visit Dr. Mayer. I had two visits at this particular office. First day was for a teeth cleaning and the second to fill a cavity. Lucia, the dental hygenist took her time with the teeth cleaning. I have a small jaw and sensitive teeth. I am so impressed on how gentle she was. Usually, other offices have to use some numbing material to calm me down. Next day, I revisited Dr. Mayer and the last thing I did not want to hear was you need a root canal or other major work. Filling the cavity was a pleasant experience. I dread getting the needle and the sound of that drill. The reality of it all this was a good experience compared to all the other I have had in the past. Let me tell you. Dr. Mayer is a professional dentist who understands your needs and gets to the root of the problem. In fact, I had no health insurance and Dr. Mayer provides dental insurance for those who have lost their job or need insurance for a low price. Look forward to my dental cleaning in six month. The worst experience ever! I came there for teeth cleaning and it was just horrible. The hygienist was touching her iPhone during the process and was listening music in her headphones. She didn't numb my gums and It was extremely painful. She hit me with a cable of the machine she was using. She spilled water on me, all my clothes were wet. After all, she didn't do a good job. She said I need a deep cleaning under my gums and it will be $170 extra. I left the place with my gums bleeding, my mouth was sore for the next two days. Today I went to another dentists office and they did a great job. They said I don't need any deep cleaning. They did an amazing job. I didn't have any pain. It was so professional. I won't be back here. They took me back 5 minutes after my scheduled time then told me the xray machine was booked so I would need to wait for it. Waited 10 minutes for it, then had to wait for the doctor. In the middle of my cleaning the doctor walked out and went to see another patient. I could hear her next door talking to the other patient. Who just walks out in the middle of an appointment to help someone else? In the exam room was all my personal contact information was on a sheet in the middle of the room for every other patient to see on a wall. Complete lack of patient privacy. I've never seen anything like that before. I could see every other patients contact information for everyone who had an appointment that day as well. She never talked to me about flossing or teeth hygiene or anything. She just cleaned my teeth and left. I also walked out without a toothbrush or floss or anything. I seriously hate going to the dentist and prior to visiting Dr. Mayer's office I hadn't been to one in about 5 years. (yeah, yeah I know) I went in with a deal from Lifebooker that included a cleaning and an exam. The dental hygienist (Lucia, I think) was amazing. Probably one of the most pleasant cleanings I have had in my life. Dr. Mayer was really nice. She took the time to actually examine my teeth and gave me honest answers and recommendations without the fear mongering. She did a cosmetic filling to fill a gap between my teeth and she drilled into my pulp and had to get the filling redone and she gave me nerve damage with the novocaine shot. This dentist was able to pull off 2 major injuries at once. However, her worst trait is that she didn't call back when I called in an emergency. I had to call back. And when I did go in, she had absolutely no idea or solutions or hypothesis as to why I couldn't eat on the tooth and why there was a huge hematoma that formed. No problem solving skills at all. A couple things: -The office is old and dirty. I am not from NYC and this may be normal for here but you would think that they would have clean/updated floors in the exam rooms. Definitely made me question whether they even autoclave the tools they use. -Was told I had a cavity when less than a month prior an examination showed no cavities. They know that my insurance will cover everything and I think they were taking advantage of it. -The dental hygienist was very nice but did not inform me when she decided to put numbing cream on my teeth. I love this dental office! I just went there yesterday for a teeth whitening treatment! I got this great deal on Groupon to get the Zoom whitening for $100, which saved me $300 bucks BTW. The most painful teeth cleaning ever!! The hygienist was not there so Dr. Mayer performed the cleaning herself. That was not the greatest experience that i had. What really pushsed me over the edge with her is that I had a problem with a tooth and needed to get it treated at a specialist's office (Endodontist) and needed my x-rays that she took. They wanted to charge me for getting my own x-rays! When i mentioned that all they have to do is send the email, since it is a digital copy she had the audacity to say that she is not making any money on the groupon deal that i came there with for a cleaning and therefore she must charge me for it if i want to have it and said that it was their "office policy". When i pointed out to her that nowwhere it says that charging for your OWN records is their policy and she cannot just make stuff up as she goes along, she agreed to release my x-ray free of charge to whatever doctor i was going to see and they needed to call her to get it. What a nuisance. Truthfully, that is just so retarded. If she was was going to give it to a doctor anyway, what was the problem giving it to me first? She is a great dentist. After a really traumatic root canal that later turned into a traumatic extraction, I can say that I have a bit of dental PTSD. Wendy made me feel like she would NEVER botch up a root canal and force me to get a tooth extracted. I like that in a dentist. Also, her office is clean, peaceful, and easy to get to. Unfortunately, the prices here are SKY HIGH....I mean, really really expensive. A filling here cost almost 3 times as much as it did in my last dentist's office, and maybe two times as much as the dentist before that. I bought a groupon for teeth whitening, I also decided to do a teeth cleaning right before since I was due for one. There was no wait time for the cleaning. I hate the dentist, all the sounds and feels so it's never pleasant for me but she made it as quick and painless as can be and always checked if I was ok. The dentist was running a little behind for the whitening so I had to wait a little. Her assistant did my whitening. I wish she would've explained everything before hand since it was my first time but she did tell me what she was doing as it went along and came to check on me each time. Dr. Mayer is incredible. She's down to earth and truly cares about her patients. The typical fears of going to a dentist and angst are left at the door. Dr. Mayer took the time to address my concerns and put me at ease. She's always been gentle (I've been a patient for several years) but today she displayed pure kindness. I made the mistake of going to another dentist who did a pure crap job on a cavity. I was in pain for over 2 months! I went to Dr. Mayer for a cleaning and a second opinion on the diagnosed "root canal" this morning. It turns out there was a hole in the filling the other dentist did! Dr. Mayer saw how upset I was and took out the old filling and did a new one. After she finished, she told me she wouldn't charge me (turns out my insurance wouldn't cover another filling on the same tooth in a 2 month span and hell if I was going back to the old dentist to fix it). I mean... what else can you ask of a person and a professional who is running a business. I was shocked when she said she wouldn't charge me! That's time and material she spent on me. I wish I could comment on the service of Wendy Mayer, but I cannot, as when I arrived for my appointment, they wouldn't take me, citing a previously undisclosed "no show" policy. They said I was late, which was frustrating, since delayed by the rain on the subway, I had taken a cab to try to get there on time. Despite this, I was only 15 min. late, and stood in the rain trying to convince them to take me in. I understand a policy of not taking a patient who is late, so as to not make the rest of the day run late, and though frustrated, I said I was happy to reschedule. However, they refused, saying that my Groupon was now invalidated and would not be able to be used again. After talking to the receptionist, who hung up on me, I called back and reached the doctor herself, who said the same thing and then proceeded to hang up on me, too. Clearly, at this point, I would NEVER reschedule with Dr. Mayer, as she's quite possibly the rudest doctor I have ever encountered, and I do not want to even see her let alone let her work in my mouth. Dr. Mayer is a patient, friendly and very professional dentist. Her office overlooks Columbus circle and Central Park which makes for a great view while your teeth are being taken care for and there was a film crew filming outside while I was there! The office is clean and I had Dr Mayer and a dental assistant both work on my teeth at the same time. When they were finished they gave me a mirror to check my teeth and I commented on a few spots and then they did more work until it was all finished. I had a lot of work that needed to be done due to coffee stains and Wendy and her assistant did a great job and they refused to take a tip even though I was there for almost an hour. I was nervous about going to a new dentist, mostly because I want to limit the amount of people who have knowledge of what an awful state my teeth are in. Lena, the dental hygienist, put all my fears to rest. The cleaning took about 20 minutes; she was quick and gentle. From experience, these two don't usually go hand in hand, so I appreciated her efficiency. My only suggestion is to raise the volume of the music, as I had nothing but my own thoughts to entertain me, and as it turns out, I'm not that interesting. After the cleaning, she told me that I'd been doing a good job brushing my teeth. Although in my head, I was giving her the "why you always lying" face, (YouTube it) a part of me was also proud and I gave myself an imaginary gold star for impressing a dentist, which has NEVER happened before. I can't say whether or not the cleaning was thorough enough as I am not a dentist and would need a professional's second opinion, but my teeth certainly feel clean. Lena even took some time to demonstrate the proper teeth brushing technique. (45 degree angle!) She was very friendly, knowledgable, and open.
