I was so excited to try Mayfel's after reading the glowing reviews on Yelp. It's a cute little restaurant right in the heart of downtown Asheville. The service was good, and it was nice not to have to wait for a table on a busy Sunday in Asheville, but I have to say the overall experience was just ok. Ok, let's get down to the nitty gritty. I just didn't like their biscuits! Maybe I'm just picky, but I ordered the southern benedict and my boyfriend ordered the fried chicken biscuit. I was expecting an awesome, fluffy biscuit, but their biscuits were super crumbly and dry; they almost reminded me of cornbread. And they were huge! We both agreed there was way too much of biscuit as we tried to pick around it. My poached eggs were overcooked, but the home fries were good as a side. My boyfriend enjoyed the fried chicken, but just wasn't a fan of the biscuit. Overall, the restaurant has a cute atmosphere. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but a bad biscuit is almost a southern sin in my books. I would give it another shot if I was back in the area, but there are so many other good brunch spots around, too! read more

Good service, but didn't love the food. Although the grits were really good, the rest of the food had too many condiments. For example the egg Benedict had (I think) paprika or curry, and although I like both species, I didn't appreciate that they completely changed the flavor of the signature hollandaise sauce that makes Benedict's so good. Same thing with the PO Boy Brisket: too many condiments. We also ordered waffles for the kids but I am almost sure that they were not fresh nor done at the restaurant, but rather they were those pre-maid (maybe frozen) waffles that are sold at supermarkets. Reason I think this is because they had the exact same size, shape and that fake sugary flavor that I've unfortunately tasted before. We had to sit outside because we didn't have a reservations but it was fine because it was surrounded with a plastic covering with sides and there were heaters so it was very comfortable, though the table was tilted at an angle had me worrying that my drink might slide off (it didn't). I had the gumbo and it had a really good flavor and nice big chunks of sausage in it. My friend had the crab cake special and I got a taste, it was wonderful. One of the top 5 crab cakes I've ever tasted. Good boudin is hard to find so when I saw it on the appetizer menu I had to try it. It was really good and they served it with a lot of fun things to pair with it. My main complaint would be the way it was served. It needed to be on a real plate so that things didn't fall off instead of the tiny little board. We kept losing pieces to the tabletop all night and made a big mess. Also, it would have been helpful if it had been sliced up a little so that it was easier to get pieces off since it was supposed to be shareable. Strangely they also brought it out at the same time as our meals making the table very crowded plus the appetizer kind of felt pointless since we had our food by then. read more

Mayfel's is a MUST STOP while you are in Asheville (if you are lucky enough to get a table during their brunch hours LOL!) but I come in here every single time I am in town for business or pleasure BECAUSE I have the cutest friends that work here named Brad and Logan, and if you are lucky enough to see them when you come in, please do say hello from me! :) You can't beat the location, it is right across from Pritchard Park in the center of downtown, where a weekly drum circle happens on Friday nights that is well worth a visit to see and boogie down! Their brunch is AMAZING! Def go with the BYO Bloody Mary bar and if you want to go "all out" get the Mountains to Sea - which is their crab cake eggs Benedict especial - but don't plan for going for a hike or anything after eating as some may suggest in travel blogs and the like - I would do that the day before and pencil off your Saturday or Sunday for trying this dish and then relaxing and lounging ALL day long. Treat yourself here and then spend the entire day enjoying the best that Asheville has to offer for food, drink & leisure. This is a great starting point to do just that. If you are feeling extra energetic, rent a tub at the Hot Springs - which is quite a drive, but a beautiful drive nonetheless - but call a few days ahead to book. Pictured in the Yelp review is an Irish coffee (this one was PERFECT). And Mayfel's Crab Burger featured alongside the Corn Maque Choux - which I highly recommend. Wonderful lunch on the patio with our Aussie, Murphy. Weather was perfect, our meals were outstanding. I had the burger with grilled asparagus and hubby had the muffuletta with fries. Both were perfect, fresh and delicious. Our server, Sierra, took great care of us and Murphy! Cold bowl of water for him and cold beer for us! It's also a great for dog owners in the winter as they're one of the few restaurants in Asheville that accepts dogs AND has an enclosed patio with heat. We were trying to get to a restaurant nearby the but the wait was insane we walked around and found Mayfel's. My wife is from MS and knows good southern and cajun food. I'm so glad we went. We had an extremely hangry kid and nothing was "appealing" to him. We knew fried chicken is always a win for him, no matter how much he says he doesn't want it. We were there for dinner time and fried chicken was a lunch menu option. The kind hostess was able to get the kitchen to make us one and it was great. That was great hospitality. I split fried green tomatoes and a po boy with the wife. It was delicious. The FGT's were crispy and had the proper firmness of a green tomatoe. The remoulade that went with it was delicious. Yum!! We went here over Early Girl Eatery because the wait for 7 was 45 minutes versus an hour & a half. Glad we did though because our waitress Yarah was awesome and the food was delicious! This was our first stop in Asheville. The service and food were amazing. I had a light appetite, so I went with the wings and crab cakes "small plates." My husband had the gumbo (and he was just short of licking the bowl)! Best wings I've had in a long time, by the way...crispy and not drenched in sauce. First time visiting Asheville and heard awesome things about this place so we figured we would try it out. First impression is it is an adorable space!! The staff and food were awesome. My friend ordered the steak and eggs and the steak was cooked perfectly. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and all in all the food for both of us was a solid 10/10. Our server was great as well! Super friendly and efficient even though they seemed a little busy with it being a holiday. One thing that I did notice and mentioned to our server was that on the "suggested tips" portion of the receipt, they do the math based off the PRE tax total. Servers already only make $2.13 an hour which is barely anything to begin with. But now the "suggested tips" for 18, 20, and 22% are now based off of the pre tax total which was in our case, $3 less than the overall total. This means the establishment is essentially shorting the employees money with their "pre tax" totals.... The server deserved an awesome tip (which we gave her) but this is not cool for the establishment to do to their employees. read more

Amazing service, the waiter was very nice and went through the menu with his top picks. We ended up getting the chicken biscuit and the steak Benedict. Terrible service. Maybe the restaurant is usually good but it was awful when my buddy and I went. We were waiting for over 40 minutes for our orders and it turned out that the cooks didn't even get our orders. The waiter didn't write down our orders when he finally asked for our drink and food orders after about 10 minutes. We had to remind him about bringing out our coffees while he was serving others as well. We saw food on the counters waiting to be served for over 10 minutes. We had to leave to catch our flight. Stopped in for breakfast while visiting Asheville. It was a Sunday morning. We were seated right away. We had our dog with us so we sat on the dog friendly patio out front. Our server was kind and helpful. She brought our dog a water bowl and treats. We ordered steak and eggs, medium rare steak with eggs over medium. As our side, we went with home style potatoes. The steak and eggs were delicious! The steak was slightly over cooked but still tasty. The home style fried potatoes were excellent! I added a little hot sauce for a kick! My partner and I shared the meal which was the perfect size for two. The coffee was rich and dark which we loved. And we ordered one beignet before we headed out to explore downtown. Yummy. The portion sizes are large for one person. However, it was just enough to share. Overall, we'd go back. It was simple home cooked food that didn't disappoint. Great place to bring your dogs when the weather is great! The wait staff was thoughtful and brought our Yorkies water and treats. We came in early evening on Saturday during the Columbus Day weekend. We didn't just happen upon this restaurant. We did research for establishments that allowed pets, and this happened to be one of them. It had good reviews and the food looked awesome. The food was delicious, we ordered gator bites for an app and a cup of gumbo. The gator bites were nice and crispy and gumbo was a heaping cup full. My entree (my son also ordered this) was the seafood ettoufee had just the right amount of heat and was so yummy! My husband ordered the salmon special and it was cooked to perfection! Pictured below is the beignets we ordered, I was only able to get a picture of one as my family grabbed and scoured it all before I could get a picture. All the food was just the right portion. Once we checked into the hotel we fired up YELP to find a local restaurant within walking distance. We walked up on a Friday night for dinner and were quickly seated outside on the sidewalk. This gave us awesome people watching opportunities and the ability to enjoy the drum circle in the park across the street. Service was great, the waitress even brought the husband some fried okra since he didn't know what it was. The husband had the Jambalaya for $18, and loved it. I am curious as to how he was able to finish it all as the portion was HUGE. I had the rice and beans for $17- rice with red beans and andoulie sausage. Good but too much for me to finish and some of the sausage was rubbery. Like most of Asheville, the beer selection was varied and local. Our pints weren't filled to the top which is a minor annoyance but a pint missing a good inch of beer is still ridiculous to me (see my pics posted). My husband and I were seated promptly upon arrival on a Friday morning. There was a Bloody Mary bar set up close to the entrance. The decor was so unique and cute! Lots of "Mardi Gras" style beads and an assortment of chandeliers. Awesome brunch spot. I'm sure dinner is wonderful, also. My husband ordered the Fried Chicken Biscuit entrée with a side of grits. Two huge pieces of fried chicken covered in gravy with a biscuit. My husband ate every bite I ordered the Southern Eggs Benedict. All of the traditional components of eggs Benedict except they use and biscuit instead of an English muffin. I ordered a side of fried potatoes. The potatoes were a little under seasoned and underwhelming. The Bennie, however, was delicious! I also ordered a mimosa which was wonderful. Waitstaff was friendly and it was a nice environment. Restrooms were nice and clean, which is always a plus. Their claim to fame is "blue bayou in the blue ridge" which is pretty cool. The portions are huge, so come hungry! I'm gonna keep this one short. The wait for Tupelo Honey was 90 minutes, here was 20, and they're 1-2 doors away from each other. While eating, we were like, okay, this isn't so bad. After we left, we went, we should have waited for Tupelo Honey. The food here just wasn't good. My dad had the best dish, which was the Crab Burger, and it was just okay. Who would have thunk you could get a little taste of NOLA in Asheville... we stumbled upon this spot for brunch before our 3 day hike in Smokey National Park. It's hard to pick your last meal before you wander into the mountains and eat PB&J sandwiches for 3 days straight, but ain't nothing wrong with some good ole creole and a Bloody Mary bar. Oh, a Bloody Mary bar you ask? You get a pint glass full of vodka and are directed to the counter to pour your own tomato juice (spiced or plain) and add your own accoutrements, including olives, and okra. The Bloody Mary Bar will knock you on your ass, so good luck making it up to the mountains and hiking that day, but our team did not digress. As for the food, you know you're not in NOLA, but still delightful to get the taste and get excited for your next college reunion, which will hopefully be a bit further south. read more

A lady in a local bookstore suggested Mayfel's for our family. We were seated quickly for our evening meal and the food arrived hot and in a timely manner. We were all pleased with the service. We had our meal inside where we were surrounded by lots of colorful art and beads draped over chandlers. I had the meatloaf with bbq sauce, Golden Yukon potatoes and okra and cornbread. It was enough for two so my son in law helped finish it off. Grandgirls enjoyed their noodles. Older adult kids had catfish meal and beer. Outside seating was available as well. Excellent food, tasty and well prepared. French fries were served in an unusual shape (pleasantly), so they were definitely not "frozen and out of the box." We ordered Shrimp Po Boys snd a Crab-cake appetizer. All enjoyed by everyone at the table. Service was attentive, checking in, refilling water, etc. but the kitchen was slow. 3.5 stars A flavor of New Orleans with a Mardi Gras theme inside, Mayfels offers a range of southern food. We ordered soft shell crab special, oyster po-boy and the seafood etoufee. The soft shell crab was probably one of the biggest crabs I've seen offered at a restaurant, which is awesome since I'm from md and usually they come out kind of measly. Flavors were so yummy with a nice bed of cheesy grits. The oyster po-boy was really disappointing because I could count the number of oysters in the sandwich on my hand, they were soggy not crispy, they were too chewy (which was strange) and the bread didn't seem very fresh. The etoufee was loaded with alot of crawfish, shrimp and crab and the flavors were there, accentuated even more with a splash of hot sauce. read more

Saturday morning and we were strolling around downtown Asheville looking for breakfast and stumbled upon Mayfel's - I'm all about some Cajun/creole style food and they had some tasty sounding specials listed on the chalkboard outside, so we decided to give it a shot. We were seated inside quickly, not crowded at the time - around 9 am - although by 10, it was starting to pick up big time. The interior is really funky and colorfully decorated, which is totally my thing. Bright art on the walls, Mardi Gras beads hanging from the ceiling, definitely reminded me of New Orleans. Our waitress was pleasant and gave us time to check out the menu, although we both ended up going with the specials - the soft shell crab eggs Benedict for my husband, and the blackened lobster omelette for myself; we both opted for the cheese grits as a side. In general, both my omelette and our grits were pretty under seasoned - I'd give the grits a pass, though, as probably 90% of grits served anywhere are under seasoned, haha. We added salt and some chipotle Tabasco (omg guys, chipotle Tabasco is a gift from God and they had it on every table!! YASSSS) and they were great, after that. I was a bit sad about my omelette, as it had plenty of lobster in it - just needed seasoning. My husband's soft shell crab eggs Benedict, however, was holycrapDELICIOUS. Like...I didn't even think I liked soft shell crab. I always thought I was vehemently opposed to it. But this dish changed my mind. His was really well seasoned, ironically - maybe it was the hollandaise sauce helping everything out (it was a legit hollandaise, for sure). Absolutely loved Mayfel's. We were in town for the night with another couple and researched before we came. Mayfel's was hard to find on the map but we were so glad we did. It was a chilly night in Asheville so when we got there everyone wanted to sit inside. They do have outdoor seating which has heaters and closed in by nice tarps. It was only a 20-30 minute wait so we waited and it was worth the wait. It's a pretty small restaurant so they probably have a longer wait during busy nights. I love the atmosphere, it reminds me of a Louisiana restaurant with all the colors and fun art. If you are looking for an intimate candlelight dinner this might not be the place. But it's definitely a good place for a double date or fun dinner night out. We all got something different dinner. I got the jambalaya which House-roasted Pork Shoulder and Sausage with Rice, Tomatoes and the Trinity. Topped with a Grilled Chicken Breast and served with Cornbread. My boyfriend got the Seafood Étouffée which has Shrimp, Crab and Crawfish in a classic New Orleans sauce, Roux, and the Trinity. Served over Potato Rounds and French bread. We both cleared our plates! If your dish doesn't come with corn bread... ask for some! We will 100% be back when we are in town next. I'm ready for some gumbo! read more
