Thoroughly enjoyed my brunch here. Loved the covered and heated outdoor patio so we could bring our pup. Service was very good. Didn't see the inside. Had the breakfast sandwich with veggie sausage and for the side, I had the gumbo. The gumbo was very good. Certainly not the best I've had but I enjoyed it. Hearty and had a kick. The sandwich was also very good. The gluten free bun was decent and the veggie patties were basically like your store bought veggie sausages (think Morningstar). My biggest issue was I ordered over easy and the eggs were basically fried. My wife got a Benedict and the poached eggs were also very over cooked. If all you serve is breakfast and lunch, you need to know how to cook eggs. The beignets we ordered were very good. Not cafe du monde (NOLA) or Huey's (Savannah) good, but a solid attempt. My other complaint is they were out of plant based milk. The server said they usually stock almond milk but ran out. First, if it's so popular that you run out, order more. Second, if you ran out unexpectedly because you always have enough, then go out and buy more since it's obviously popular. It was 10:30 on Sunday. You literally just opened which means you ran out last night. Go to the supermarket on your way in (or ask a server to stop on their way in) and buy more. It's not like it's the middle of the shift and you ran out. Sorry, but a pet peeve of mine is when a restaurant runs out of something that is easily purchased a block away at a supermarket or convenience store. Anyway, I would come back. The service was really good. Knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. We had our dog and sat in an enclosed, heated, outdoor patio. The club sandwich is about as good as any we have ever tried. The bacon is cooked perfectly, the turkey is high quality, the bread is fresh. I would say something was a bit overly sweet which may have been the bacon but I wasn't sure. Also, the bread was good but maybe a bit too dry for my tastes. All in though, a remarkable sandwich. Well done, Mayfel's! The gumbo was full of meats and tasty. I would suggest order, $3 upcharge, but well worth it. We got crab cakes on the salad which were also terrific. Limited to no filler, no breading, and cooked to perfection. Mayfel is a very popular restaurant! It was slammed the entire time we were there. It had its pluses and minuses. Nothing was offensive, but nothing was great either. Pros: - even though they were slammed, we were sat not too long after being put on a list - mimosas were strong - my shrimp po boy was good but I wish there was more breading on the shrimp. - I had a bite of the fried chicken sandwich. We had a party of 7 at 10:30 am on Monday, July 5, 2021. There was a 45 minute wait, but it ended up being only 40 minutes. It's very vegetarian-friendly! Yarah was our waitress and she was great! Even though she had so many tables (both inside and outside), she got everything out to us in a timely manner. Here's what we got: - French Market Beignets ($1 each): Wowow. Nothing rivals Café du Monde, but these are really good. - Fried Chicken Biscuit ($15): We got it with the milk gravy. I really liked that they had that as an option. The biscuit and chicken were delicious. - Asheville Scramble ($14): Good portion. Could've used some sauce or something. It was pretty dry. But it's cool because you can get it with eggs or tofu. - Smoked Salmon Benedict ($15): The salmon was good, but the English muffin was very thin and hard. - Veggie Omelet ($13): Didn't seem as big of a portion, but maybe that's because my mom ordered just egg whites. I saw this restaurant on TikTok and was so excited to try but ultimately was very disappointed. When I think of LA food I think of the big punches of flavor, and spices and the food was everything but that. There are not a lot of vegetarian options so please be aware that you are going to pay $5 for a tiny side of grits and red beans and rice. My drink was made incorrectly and even when sent back it was still made unlike the menu described. The smothered biscuit gravy was very thick and tasty like colored flour and for $13 it need to have the flavor as described in the menu. I was pretty disappointed with Mayfel's tbh. The food tasted okay, but the portion sizes were really small. We did carry out because the outdoor patio was completely closed off, which kinda defeats the point of having outdoor seating during a pandemic. So maybe portion sizes were smaller because we did carry out? Either way, it definitely felt like I got 10$ worth of food because my boyfriend and I were starving after our shrimp & grits and seafood etouffee. We got second dinner elsewhere after haha. The shrimp and grits was a slightly larger portion, and I enjoyed the blue cheese flavor. Still didn't feel worth the money though. And the etouffee was just tragic. This is a must try! I went on a Saturday with my family (5 total) and we all had high praises. We tried the (in order of best dishes): Fried Green Tomatoes: dare I say the best I've had? Fried Chicken and Biscuits with peppered gravy, side of mac and cheese, and two poached eggs Biscuits and gravy with a side of mac and cheese: the mac and cheese side is a MUST N.C. Crab Cakes Scallops and grits: they were delicious but a little too salty for our taste Steak and eggs: do not recommend. The steak was very tough. I knocked off a star from an otherwise 5-star place because the service was rather slow. The restaurant was busy (1.5hr wait) but with limited seating due to COVID, we weren't expecting service to be so slow. Water was requested multiple times & we tried to get the wait staff's attention for a steak knife. The butter knife my dad was given could NOT cut through the tough steak. We were almost halfway done with our entrees before the hostess brought us a steak knife for my dad's steak and eggs. His food was pretty cold before he got to eat his first bite of steak. One of my favorite places we ate on our trip. The brunch was delicious with lots of options and unique touches to the dishes! We ordered the fried green tomatoes and the beignet to start. The tomatoes were amazing with crumbled goat cheese and a tasty red pepper sauce. The beignet was fluffy and so sweet! I ordered the breakfast sandwich with home fries. They brought out fries on accident, but quickly fixed the mistake and brought what I ordered. The sandwich was huge and loaded with arugula and cheeses. My husband I and I have been going to this amazing place to eat for the last two years. We were discussing this Sunday how we are never disappointed by the food. I rarely order anything new from a menu when I find what I like. I explore something new each time, and without fail it's amazing. We were able to walk in with no reservations even on a busy Sunday afternoon, I had the crab cake fritters to start which were pretty good full of crab meat and a wonderful sauce to top it. I walked into this establishment based upon the recommendation of a coworker and the delectable offerings and reviews I saw online. However, my greeting upon walking in the door was, "Are you ok?" I didn't quite know how to receive the question, so I asked, "What do you mean if I'm ok?" I continued, I'm doing fine, and asked again, "Why did you ask if I was doing ok?" The young woman stated there's nothing wrong with asking if I was ok. I tried to explain that it wasn't an endearing, "are you ok? But that I took it as an insult based upon the way she asked and her look while asking, as if I wasn't welcomed there. I am a Black man. Dressed as anyone else walking down the street. I asked for her manager, who introduced himself as the GM. I expressed my disappointment in the way I felt I had been treated. I was only trying to order something to go, and was treated as if I wasn't welcomed there. My concerns were dismissed, and I l left. Albeit, after saying F y'all. Not loud or boisterous , but still disrespectful nonetheless. I returned shortly thereafter because I was not able to get their names. They refused to give them to me. This is a New Orlean Cuisine. The ceilings hang with beads. We started with seafood gumbo. It does have New Orlean Cajun cuisine taste. It is tasty. Overall: Very good! I went twice in one day. Food: I ordered the seafood gumbo and beignets. The gumbo was exceptional. The flavor was authentic Louisiana Cajun with just enough spice. They did not skimp on the amount of seafood either- my bowl had an abundance of perfectly cooked shrimp, crawfish, and fresh fish. The beignets (unfortunately could not wait to get a picture) didn't quite match up to Cafe Beignet on Decatur Street in New Orleans, but they were close. Prices are reasonable, a good variety of meats and seafood, but sadly no vegetable or fresh side options to offset all the greasy offerings. Seafood gumbo was great, the cup was a good size and also came with a piece of fantastic soft bread. Fried oysters were crisp on the outside and plump on the inside and no grit. Fried okra was also a hit. The Mac and cheese was disappointing because it was lukewarm and lacked flavor, though it was pretty creamy. Was looking forward the beignets and although they were very fresh only one of them had that nice beignet fluff. The shrimp and grits were very tasty and the bleu cheese was a great addition. With excellent service and mouth-watering food, it is sure to be the highlight of your trip here. Under the breakfast menu I ordered the biscuits and gravy. For only $10 it comes with their big buttermilk biscuit, baptized in a mushroom based gravy (vegetarians rejoice), and crumbled up sausage or veggie sausage in which I had the veggie sausage. It includes a side for I chose the home fries. I have never gravitated twds biscuits and gravity but my trip here to Asheville has opened up my horizons. I realized that I had to wait if I wanted to eat well in Asheville, the wait actually turned to be short. The seafood gumbo appetizer just blew me away. It was absolutely amazing! Flavorful, with a nice kick! Not overpowering at all! The fried okra was great, I really am a fan of their Cajun seasoning and breading. The Cajun chicken pasta was great, but not very Cajun. If that makes sense? The shrimp Po'boy was great too, the bread is the star of that. I did eat it after the pasta, so for me it was not crunchy/crispy. This seemed to be the sweet spot for arriving because shortly after arriving, the wait time lengthened to about 2 hours so my advice would be to arrive early; they don't have text notifications for reservations so you have to stay close by to wait for your name to be called. To start, we ordered 2 Beignets and Fried Green Tomatoes. This was my first time having Beignets and they were large and fluffy and only $1. They were good, but the star of this review is the Fried Green Tomatoes. I can't recall a time I'd ever felt so satisfied by a single bite. It was perfectly crisp. And it boasted a complex flavor profile with tangy goat cheese, sweet onion relish, roasted red pepper aioli, and scallions. I asked for a side of this aioli -- twice! On a recommendation, I ordered the Fried Chicken Biscuit with Peppered Milk Gravy and a side of collard greens and my partner ordered a daily special Crawfish Omelet with sweet potato waffle fries. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The gravy was bland and the biscuit was just alright. I found myself taking bites of his omelet. However, when I slathered both the biscuit and omelet with the roasted red pepper aioli, both tasted way, way better.
