After staying the night in Cloudcroft, we drove to Mayhill to eat breakfast this morning at the Mayhill Cafe. My wife had a veggie omelet with hash browns and toast and I had the Country fried steak with hash browns and scrambled eggs and sourdough toast. Everything was delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the cafe and the amount of business that it had. By the amount of business in the small village cafe proves that good food and service can be successful almost anywhere. They also had a case full of apple, peach and cherry pastries, apple fritters, donuts and cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls were huge and tasty (we took one to go). While traveling from Alamogordo to Carlsbad we were unfamiliar with this stretch of the Mountains so we tried having breakfast in nearby Cloudcroft but nothing appeared open so we ended up at the Mayhill Cafe. What a find this place was. First of all it's a very quaint little town surrounded by a beautiful stretch of mountains with a beautiful little park across the street. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros & the Breakfast burrito. Both were terrific with nice sized portions. Our server was very perky and did an outstanding job of taking care of us ( I wish I remembered her name because she really was terrific ) If we would have known of this place we would have also stayed in the hotel which is attached to the restaurant. The hubby and I decided to grab a quick breakfast before hitching our trailer and heading home. Mayhill Cafe definitely has the small town feel to it. We visited on an early Sunday morning and the restaurant was already filled with what appeared to be older regular local patrons. It took nearly 15 minutes to be seated but we were patient as we had noticed that only one waitress was working the entire restaurant. After finally being seated, it took nearly another 15 minutes to have our order taken. A very nice gentleman named Josh came and took our order. He was also bringing out plates to the other tables. Now the food... Although it took a good while to be seated and have our order taken, they were cranking out the plates. It didn't take long for our food to arrive. Hubby had the meat skillet with a side of sourdough bread and coffee. It was a huge mix of three eggs, bacon and potatoes topped with shredded cheese. Hubby reports that eggs were fluffy, bacon was salty and crispy and potatoes were nicely browned. He also raved about the coffee. I had the Cafe special which included 2 eggs, choice of meat and potatoes- I chose bacon and home fries. It also came with a side of either pancakes or French toast, I took the latter. Food was excellent just as the hubby had reported. Eggs were fluffy, bacon was crisp and potatoes were fried lightly brown. I expected only 2 toast halves, like most breakfast restaurants. But instead I received 4 large thick slices of French toast, lightly toasted and dusted with powdered sugar. As we were waiting to pay at the register, they brought out freshly baked cinnamon rolls to place in their small bakery case. After looking at the size of the rolls, we purchased two for the road. The rolls were large and soft topped with a cream cheese frosting with a subtle hint of sweetness. We will definitely be returning to this tiny gem. I only subtracted a star because of the wait. I feel it would be a good practice to occasionally acknowledge the waiting customers and briefly explain that it may be a long wait. At one point, we thought the waitress had forgotten about us and we nearly walked out but a nice older lady seated us and took our drink order just in time. To their credit, the staff are very polite and really stepped up to help each other. It's a great small crew. Definitely give it a try! read more

We have been wanting to visit Mayhill Cafe for awhile and I'm glad to have that out of the way. The food was very bland. Spanish rice tasted like cold oatmeal. Beans straight out of the can. Chicken in the tacos was tough and tasteless. Hubby had the very mediocre chilli stew. On the positive, Waitress was friendly and efficient. The salsa was good. The flies were unbearable. The food is decent, but that's not the issue. The servers there act like they are doing you a great favor by allowing you into their restaurant. We were YELLED AT, belittled, and overall just treated like gum on the bottom of their shoe. There is no exaggeration here - there is a staff shortage in the food industry, and I understand that, but they cross the line and can't even find it in themselves to be decent humans. *There is a cashier there with short hair who treats people with respect and kindness. If you have to eat here, get takeout and eat at the lovely park across the street. read more

We decided to make the drive from the Tularosa Basin today to try this cafe as a friend said the food was pretty good. The waitress was amazingly kind and courteous. We ordered fried okra and it was delicious. I ordered the Mexican Steak and regretted not going a different route. The steak was very bland, the Spanish rice was not edible. The beans had a strange smoked gone too far taste and the enchiladas were rubbery. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and it was good, the salad was fresh but the sweet potato fries were soggy. All that being said, the service was great, the establishment was very clean. We want to take the kids for breakfast as the reviews on Yelp highly recommend the breakfast and the service was great. read more

We spent one night at the hotel and had breakfast at the cafe the next morning. We are kicking ourselves for being too late for dinner the night we arrived! We did have some baked goods. The cinnamon roll and banana nut bread were very good. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and convenient. We would gladly stay here again. Breakfast the next morning was delightful! Service was fast and friendly. We loved the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The smothered breakfast burrito was heavenly! My husband really enjoyed his skillet, too. I was tempted to head back up for lunch when we got done at nearby Runyan Ranch but our toddler was tired so we reluctantly headed back to Roswell. This is a nice rustic restaurant in the middle of Sacramento mountains. Offering breakfast and lunch, food is decent but nothing special. Omelets, pancakes, breakfast burritos. Lunch ok too -- I had a chicken salad, whereas my friend had a burger with fries. Tried the cherry pie too - a little too sweet for my taste... Stayed here at the hotel for 4 days. The hotel is clean, quaint, and reasonably priced. The restaurant puts out good food in ample quantities with frequent specials. Eat here Cloudcroft! Best all around food and service. First, it's 4th of July holiday week so very busy. We were greeted and seated right away by a friendly waitress. My wife ordered enchilada plate while I got the chicken fried steak. The cafe's packed. In 15 minutes our food was in front of us. Hot. Delicious. Clean. (After the hair we found at a Cloudcroft cafe that also took forever to bring out our food - see my other review- we inspected our food here and were relieved it was clean.) Whoever's running this cafe is a restaurant pro. They have excellent cooks! My wife said their enchiladas are the best she's eaten. My chicken fried steak batter was clearly home made and delicious. The green beans were fresh, not canned, with bacon in them. The service never slacked, in spite of them being packed. Three waitresses on duty. Hats off to whoever owns this cafe. Instead of making long winded excuses for bad service and unclean food - like that other cafe owner does, lying that all cafes up here have long waits and no help - this Mayhill Cafe owner obviously hired great cooks and waitresses. I ordered the chicken fried steak. When it was served, I could tell by looking at it that it was overcooked (likely hours earlier) and dry as can be. It looked actually charred. Came here to visit a friend and stayed here with a few friends. Stayed in the "apt" 2 bedrooms with 2 single beds in the living area. Nice balcony with a view of the mountains and "downtown" Mayhill. Went for breakfast and got the pancakes that were the size of hubcaps. Very good food. I would suggest the chicken fries steak, it's very good. The servers reminded me of the cool ladies in the waffle house, polite and funny. Would come back again. read more

Dropped by here on our way home from the White Sands dunes and I am so glad that we stopped here. This is a little treasure in the middle of nowhere and the service is just excellent. The staff is very friendly and recommended really great food. The dining area and bathroom were very clean. We just had some coffee and some chips and we ordered the coconut meringue pie and I am so glad we did. Their salsa was really good, freshly made and not out of the jar. The pie was really scrumptious and I'm just happy we ordered it. It's a big slice so you can share it with your partner and not feel guilty about having dessert. The price was just right. All in all a really wonderful, rustic, and awesome experience dining at this place. We will surely visit again if we are ever in the area. read more

Good food, charming cafe, lousy service. My wife and I showed up for lunch today and was rudely treated by the waitress. Must have been a bad day. Nobody was in the cafe for lunch. We requested a larger 4 person table instead of the one for two next to a food rack and kitchen door. She seemed put out and did not want to waste a 4 person table on two when the lumch crowd arrives. We left upset as our mood for a nice lumch had changed. We are sort of locals from the neighboring community of Cloudcroft. Try to get here a couple times a year, but no more. Mayhill Cafe has excellent food which is served in large amounts. We ate breakfast and lunches enjoying both. They have some delicious pastries at the counter. Now for the downside. The service was slow and somtimes not highly friendly. It took a few minutes to pay out due to staff shortage. We sometimes passed it up as was pressed for time. My wife and I were travelling through Alamogordo and CloudCroft had fantastic lunches at the Mayhill Café. The place has a warm and cozy mountain-cabin atmosphere, with very friendly and attentive staff. The portions and prices are very good. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich, which was perfectly balanced with mouth-watering meat, cheese, sauerkraut, and Texas toast - it definitely exceeded my New York-born expectations! My wife ordered the Green Chili Stew, which she loved because the chili was blended in just right and not overly spicy. We will certainly come back here again, because we want to try other items like their green chili hamburgers, beef and cheese burrito, chicken fried steak, Philly steak sandwich - and lots of gorgeous desserts. We visited the Mayhill Cafe during Memorial Weekend. We heard they were having a special on their hamburgers. The cafe is not fancy, but it is not supposed to be. Our server was very friendly and attentive. She seemed genuinely happy to see us and made us feel at ease. My wife ordered a hamburger and a side of fried okra. I ordered the green chili cheeseburger with fries. Our burgers were very large with with fresh vegetables and a patty that was obviously hand formed. Both our burgers were great! Not a complaint, but I would have liked more green chilies on the burger. My wife liked her fried okra and my French fries were very good. The burgers were on the menu for $11.00 and $12.00, but we were charged the special price of $6.00 and $6.50. What a bargain! We have eaten breakfast there, and it is very good. The cafe is known for it's chicken fried steak. Very good. The Mayhill Cafe is worth the drive. There is a small park across the street if you want takeout and eat outside. read more

I went to the Cafe this weekend. It was great! Friendly, Fast, and Accurate service! Very clean restaurant with a rustic decor. The food tasted great! I had a cheese burger and it was a good size for the price. They have a variety of foods. Also, they sell freshly baked pastries, pies, and bread. Was disappointed that chicken breast just had can of green chile dumped on it along with some cheese, green beans were canned and roll was store bought as well.
