While traveling from Alamogordo to Carlsbad we were unfamiliar with this stretch of the Mountains so we tried having breakfast in nearby Cloudcroft but nothing appeared open so we ended up at the Mayhill Cafe. What a find this place was. First of all it's a very quaint little town surrounded by a beautiful stretch of mountains with a beautiful little park across the street. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros & the Breakfast burrito. Both were terrific with nice sized portions. Our server was very perky and did an outstanding job of taking care of us ( I wish I remembered her name because she really was terrific ) If we would have known of this place we would have also stayed in the hotel which is attached to the restaurant. The Mayhill Cafe is 5 stars from start to finish. We absolutely loved this place!

Sweet salsa??? Noo! Cold beans no!! Terrible rice? Go to Nina's or La Fonda in Artesia to learn how to make the rice. Good enchiladas tho

If you are visiting White Sands National Park and looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay in Alamogordo, this is an excellent choice. The motel is a family-owned property, and the hospitality from the owners was exceptional. From the moment we arrived, they were warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. You can immediately tell they take great pride in their motel and care about the experience their guests have. The room and entire property were immaculately clean--honestly cleaner than many larger chain hotels we've stayed in. Everything looked freshly painted, well-maintained, and thoughtfully cared for. The landscaping and exterior were also beautifully kept, which made the whole place feel inviting and safe. What makes the White Sands Motel special is the personal touch you only get from a locally owned, family-run motel. Instead of the impersonal feel of big hotels, you feel like a valued guest here. If you're planning a trip to White Sands National Park, Alamogordo, or southern New Mexico, I highly recommend staying here. It's a fantastic family-owned motel in Alamogordo that offers spotless rooms, great hospitality, and a truly pleasant experience. We will absolutely stay here again on our next trip to White Sands National Park

However, it was a goal to check out the lodge so that I could attest to others on its history. Emily at the front desk was so nice as well as the manager. I asked could I see one of the rooms since online the pictures were great and they have kept the original look and feel. the manager said he had step better than a standard room. He handed me a key to look at the Governors suite (see video). I returned the next day after hiking to have lunch and peruse the gift shop. Prices are a little higher, however the food is pretty amazing. I split a burger and chips. Food is great in the bar area. Dinning opens in evening but requires reservations. Majestic views and well kept greens. don't be surprised but if you find yourself golfing around the deer, elk or wild horses. If you're lucky, you may see snow which makes all that much more beautiful. There is rich history of the lodge hanging in the walls and in areas to read upon. This used to be timber country and the original lodge burned down years and years and years ago. While at the Lodge check out Cloudcroft museum to take in all the history that included the Lodge, baby sanatorium and 1st Calvary visits, where it all started this beautifully small town.
