Absolutely loved everything about this restaurant. There were so many vegetarian options and the lady there was incredibly nice. When I first walked in and saw the fountain I instantly thought the place would be too rich for my blood, but everything was so very affordable and My goodness the food there hit the spot in such a grand way. From the Grape leaves to the Vegetarian platter to the special Falafel patter (My favorite) were superb. Writing with a heavy heart as it used to be my favorite place but since the Afghani brothers sold it its not the same anymore we came for dining and sat outside. This was in covid time and server wasn't wearing a mask and getting really close to us, making me question what happens inside the restaurant. We went on a Monday night. The place was empty, not a bad thing for me because I don't like crowds. The owners are actually afghan- not Persian, so I was a tad disappointed because my sister and I were really craving Persian food, we usually go to Alborz all the way in Vienna, but that's too far so we looked up places on Yelp and this popped up with great reviews and stars, so we went. The food I felt was more Afghan style, than Persian. Appetizers & teas- Baba ghnoush - it was okay it grows on you after a couple bites- if you like tasting the roasted eggplant I may suggest trying a different appetizer. Mantu- delicious Bread - they said they made it but I'm skeptical about that. "Persian Tea"- exquisite Entrees- I was torn between the chicken kabob and lamb kabob, so I ordered chicken, but got lamb instead not a big deal because I like both. (I do remember specifically specifying I wanted chicken though :( ) but Lamb Kabob was good. My sister ordered the rib-eye kabob and ordered it medium rare- but definitely needed a little bit more time because it looked raw-there were some pieces that were cooked and it was good, so again no big deal. I went here with my in laws for my father in laws birthday. Everyone couldn't stop raving about how "delicious" the food was. It was very "Mazadar"! They live up to their name. My nephew asked his mom to learn how to cook the food like that lol He's a very picky eater btw. I got the eggplant stew, lentil soup and chicken Karahi. All very yummy. I think we found our new favorite place to go with the fam. The owner is also very accommodating and generous! I asked if they served cake so we could sing happy birthday after dinner. He let me know they have baklava and other sweets but no cake. At the end of dinner he let me know he went out and got cake for us to have. It was an amazing chocolate. We were very surprised by such great service. I highly recommend this afghan restaurant to anyone looking for some good food and great service. Also, a nice date night spot. Went here tonight with my family for an Eid day celebration dinner. The decor is gorgeous and the fountain in the middle is soothing to listen to. While the place was very busy, the service was still very friendly though there was a bit of a wait to get our menus. Given the friendly service we didn't mind at all. Our waitress was very accommodating and answered all of our questions. The food was good and we all finished everything we ordered. The kabobs were all flavorful - we tried the ground beef and chicken kabobs. The only thing I took one star off for which was a major turn off for me and my family was that the person answering their phone blatantly lied to me when I asked if the restaurant served alcohol. The receptionist at the restaurant told me no when clearly during dinner we saw wine and beer being served at other tables. I don't mind that they serve alcohol as long as the food/meats are zabiha halal, but the blatant lying took away my trust and my family and I will not be returning because of it. You can tell that the owner put a lot of love, effort, and money into this place because it definitely shows in the food and the ambiance. The decor is ridiculously beautiful. There's a fountain in the middle of the restaurant with tables alongside it. It's open and airy with with light blues, silvers, golds, and black as its colors. We ordered appetizers, main course, and dessert which we rarely do but at the suggestion of the owner, we decided to treat ourselves. For appetizers, we started off with the Bolanee Kachaloo, a crepe like bread stuffed with potatoes, spring onions, and light spices (taking this directly from the menu because I could not remember what was in it). They also serve complimentary bread that comes with 2 types of chutney. Ryan S. got the chicken kabob while I ordered the eggplant stew. I've been looking for a good, solid eggplant stew ever since my Persian friend's dad made me eggplant stew a few years back. The eggplant stew was delish but had an layer of oil at the bottom. It didn't deter me from eating all of it, just be aware if you do order it. The desserts are not to be missed. We got the Persian ice cream and Carrot Alwah - sauteed carrots with butter and milk and accompanied with pistachios and almonds. The Persian ice cream was light tasting and accompanied with the Carrot Alwah, it was a nice combination. This place was not crowded at all on a Friday night. YAAAAAAAAAS. This restaurant is bae. I love the ambiance of this restaurant. The interior design is just pretty different from what you would expect elsewhere in general. And how can you say no to seats with pillows and cushions?! Come on! I was just getting takeout, but talk about a cool spot to take a date. Curvy couches, a meditation pool, and interesting colors would make this a great special occasion spot if I lived nearby. I decided I wanted something simple, so I ignored all the suggestion to get the lamb shank and I ordered a kabob with chicken and lamb. This was served with Basmati rice and a grilled half tomato. Something so plain has never been soooo delicious. The meat was grilled perfectly with complex flavors that were brushed on. The rice was moist and flavorful. The nan that accompanied the entree was also warm and yummy. However, in the going the extra mile department, I love this story. I got there late and I was the only person in the restaurant. The owner observed that I had a MLB baseball jersey and, without asking, changed the TV channel to the baseball game. I know that is not a big thing, but that kind of effort to connect with your customers is rare today and should be noted. Get here often if you live nearby. read more

The servers appear to be the managers of the restaurant. They were attentive, refilled drinks without being asked, and were kind. I wish I had liked the food. :o/ -Food: The food was such a disappointment!!! UGH. I'm wondering if I just had a bad experience. How is it that everyone loves this place, and I was left so unimpressed?! Mazadar's 2 start rating is 100% due to the cuisine. We ordered: -MK Maust (Maust is a homemade yogurt w/diced cucumber, dill and garlic.) The Maust was fresh and came with an ample supply of fresh bread for dipping. If you are a dill and garlic (just a hint) aficionado this is a great dip for you. -Chicken Kabob with rice... such a disappointment!!! The chicken was a little dry, and lacking in flavor. Visiting our friends up north led us here. I admit this kind of cuisine did not really pique my interest until I saw how good the reviews were online. It has been a while since I have been blown away by the decor, but as soon as you walk in you can't help but notice the fountain in the middle of the whole place. Regardless of the fountain, the place is decorated nicely keeping with the Middle Eastern theme, but not going overboard. Boyfriend and I ordered the mango lassi which was so refreshing. It's a shame there are no refills because I would have probably downed a whole pitcher if that were the case. We also got the Mantu appetizer which was quite tasty and light. I think I would have ordered this as an entree had I not wanted to try something different. Instead, I ordered the lamb on bone entree. I don't think I have had lamb cooked so good. Everything was fall off the bone and no knife needed. It came with awesome rice to soak of the sauce with. Needless to say, the whole meal was finished by me. The only thing lacking was the quickness in service. The owner (?) or older gentleman was very nice and helpful. What a great find for a local Afghan restaurant! Come inside and be prepared to be greeted by the surprising decor. Indoor fountain right in the center of the restaurant, along with cozy seating along the side of the restaurant. It's both modern and comfortable! Perfect for a date night or just a nice dinner with friends and loved ones. The service was prompt and they were really helpful in getting us to decide on our picks. We decided to go with what I've been craving for, the beef kubideh, and the samosas along with the mango drink. All are perfection. Simply perfection. The rice, the meats, the samosa, perfect! Deliciously seasoned, perfectly portioned, and priced just right. A couple of staff stopped by to ask us how everything is going, and trust us, we're doing just fine all night! This is an interesting little restaurant. From the outside, you'd imagine something completely different than the cool decor on the inside. This place could be great for social events, but is not so suited for intimate dining. With such an open floor plan, Mazadar could cater to large parties easily, but when you are trying to have a private conversation, it is impossible to not feel like every other table in the restaurant is eavesdropping. The service is very attentive, but not bothersome. This seems to be something that restaurants in the DC area lack. You normally feel either ignored, or like you want put a sign up on your table informing your nosy server specifically when you do or don't want them to fuss over you. Lest I digress... I did wait at the door for a few minutes (this just gave me some time to snap a few photos!), from then on I was 100% pleased with the service offered at Mazadar. The kind waiter Carter even ran our forgotten leftovers out to my friend and I in the parking lot. Good thing too because I did enjoy them for lunch the next day! The food is very tasty to say the least. My friend and I started with the Baba Ganoush. I give it 5 stars all day. Love the ginormous flat bread that it comes with. You can never have enough carbs, right? The lamb dish we ordered was tender, flavorful, and paired very well with the saffron rice. It was a dish that dreams are made of. The falafel is the best I've ever had. Not to chunky, not to smooth, not to spicy. Yumm-os. If I have to knock one thing, it is Mazadar's wine list. It is just not good, and the waiter, although he was great, wasn't very well prepared to help me select a red for me and a white my friend. My red was like fermented grapes in rubbing alcohol and my friend's white was so mango infused I would only ever call it a desert wine; never to be served before the end of the savory courses. Overall, Mazadar is a great place to enjoy Middle Eastern food. It is not too good for date night, but it would be perfect for large groups. Excellent kebab! I really enjoyed the kebab sandwich - really nice marinated and tender chicken, with a great sauce and vegetables. Reminded me of a gyro, which I love. Portions were decent sized and the price was right. Bread was very aromatic, could smell the yeast. One minor complaint - the kebab platters don't come with salad, just rice and bread. You need to pay extra for the salad. I personally would like a salad rather than two different carbs. Note: 18% tip is included. Other than that, you just get a little chunk of tomato and no vegetable, so I ordered a spinach side, which was good but really could have been cooked spinach from anywhere. I had hoped the spinach would be more similar to a murg saagwala or something ethnic. Overall, Mazadar is a 3/5 for me, and I think the people who have given it higher reviews here may not have tried all the other kabob places in the area yet. If you're willing to drive up the road a bit to Tysons Corner, I recommend you head up to Shamshiry instead. Tigris in Oakton is also pretty good, depending on what day you're in there -- but you definitely get more for your buck at all those other places, and the meat is cooked a little better in terms of chargrilled tenderness. read more
