For what McAlister's Deli is, a fast casual restaurant offering mostly salads, sandwiches, and soup with some more substantial items thrown in here and there, it is 5 stars! I was looking for someplace not far from GMU when I had a 2 hour break between classes to grab dinner and my Yelp search results guided me here. I arrived just before 6pm on a Thursday, and it was not crowded at all. Within 10 minutes of me ordering and sitting down, however, it was another story. I noticed tables ordering after me waited for drinks or didn't receive them altogether and/or had items missing from their orders. They do a large carry out business plus a large order-online-and-pick up business so keep that in mind when planning your visiting times. I was really surprised that a choose 2 (a la Panera ) could include so many options (including nachos or a loaded baked potato) and nearly all of the half salads had chicken at no extra charge! I almost fainted when my choose two was priced at $8.26! I chose to do a half salad/half sandwich combination. It was really hard, honestly, to choose between all the delicious sounding meals. Another point I appreciate, calorie counts listed! Anyways, I went with the 1/2 horseradish roast beef and cheddar (black angus roast beef, sharp cheddar, caramelized onions, and horseradish sauce on grilled ciabatta) and 1/2 Savannah chicken salad (grilled chicken, dried cranberries, Gorgonzola, honey roasted almonds, tomatoes, and cucumbers). The sandwich was far bigger than a 1/2 Panera sandwich and so much tastier too! The roast beef was perfectly rare, the cheddar well-melted, lots of caramelized onions adding a sweet touch, and just enough horseradish sauce to give it a nice kick. I loved the ciabatta bread too-perfectly soft and comforting! The Savannah chicken salad was just as delicious! I had it without the nuts, but I lost no flavor at all! The shallot vinaigrette on the side was a nice take on a traditional vinaigrette with a bit of sweetness. The amount of chicken was surprising in a good way as was the amount of gorgonzola cheese. Everything came together tastefully and it was a great complement to the sandwich. I also appreciated the pickle on the side-delicious ending to a wonderful (and inexpensive) meal that far surpassed anything I had access to during undergrad at Pitt (although Pittsburgh has come leaps and bounds since then-without totally giving away my age!) I have 4 more night classes on Thursdays this semester and I will most likely end up here again (although I did love Natalie's Baguettes too and it is closer to my off-campus GMU program until we move onto main campus in the spring)at least once if not all because there are so many combinations I can choose and basically have a new meal each visit! I like how my food is brought to me when ready. My suggestions would be to not have the drink fountain behind the register though. While I brought my own water, I noted that anyone wanting refills had to go up-front to get them which is not really conducive since there was a huge line most of my visit. I really wanted to like this place but i just can't. The food was fine but i have ordered twice here and both times, i was missing an item. The first time was a cookie. The second time as a full soup and ice tea. I called both times and spoke to a young lady and she said my credit card would be refunded (order was under my husband's name) and both times, i haven't seen any refund. Sometimes it's nice to just grab something there since we live near by but i feel like i am just losing money since i am always missing something. I really liked the Reuben sandwich and the jalapeno one was ok but my hubby wasn't a huge fan. I also got a spud the 2nd time and it was just very basic. Anyways, we prob won't be going back. The experience I just had @ the Fairfax location was disgusting. This was not the first problem at this restaurant but it will be my last. The first problem was that I ordered a sandwich for my husband while I was at lunch with my friend. I brought it home but my husband had forgotten I was bringing it and had dinner ready when I got home ( it was a marathon catching up with my best friend so wee were there for a long time after lunch. The next day husband bit into the sandwich for his lunch. Instead of the American cheeses that came with the sandwich they had ignored my request for cheddar and instead filled the club with pepper jack. My husband hurled and couldn't eat it. I can't tolerate pepper jack either. So I called the restaurant and the OWNER SAID "since it was the next day there was nothing she could do to fix it. If I'd called before midnight (they close @ 5 or 6 PM) I could have gotten a refund. But they offered nothing. I filed a complaint with my former credit card Capital One and they refused to do anything either so I cancelled my card and decided to move our monthly lunches to Panera. But today I got a text announcing Buy 1 get 1 free, National Sandwich day, sandwiches. I clicked the link to read about the promo and saw NO RESTRICTIONS so my husband & I went to Lunch there. Unfortunately what happened was beyond despicable. I normally order salad so I was a sandwich virgin. I ordered the 12" French Dip & he ordered the King Club. After placing the order I got the total which DID NOT reflect the cheaper sandwich being taken off. I mentioned the text and the link so the girl said that the exceptions were the 2 sandwiches we ordered. So I said well then cancel the order and we'll comply with the exceptions that WERE NOT mentioned on the text nor the promo. The manager came over and tried to make us feel bad by telling us that she'd have to throw out the already prepared food if we didn't stick to our original order. To which I replied that no the best option was for them to honor the promo. Which they refused. Then we reordered but I chose a sandwich that came with a FREE SIDE. Since I was a sandwich virgin I didn't know what those choices were. The manager walked away without saying anything and the clerk came back and described the difference between the side salad & the Tomato & Cucumber salad. She did NOT mention that one was FREE & one had an up-charge so I unknowingly ordered the one with the upcharge as the Tomato & Cucumbers were NOT IN FACT A SALAD at all just sliced Tomatoes & cucumbers. We got our food and husband took the receipt. As we were picking up to leave I picked up the receipt and saw that I was charged for my FREE salad. I went to get it corrected. there were 2 clercks doing NOTHING so I asked one then the other to get the manager. They both continued to do NOTHING. So I stepped to the other side of the counter and saw the manager helping to get a pick up order ready. I waited til she was finished and showed her that I was charged for my FREE SIDE SALAD. She left without saying anything. Another woman showed up and announced she was the owner si I repeated myself. She LOUDLY told me the sign "CLEARLY" said there was an upcharge. I told her to point to it. She took off her reading glasses and pointed to fine print I couldn't read with or without my reading glasses. She yelled as she started to laugh that if I gave her back the salad she'd refund my money. I was incensed that she obviously couldn't read the sign any better than I could and she had the audacity to request that I puke up the salad. So I decided to humor her and brought my index finger up to my mouth. She jumped back aghast and yelled even louder for me to leave the restaurant. I looked at her and said it was YOUR idea that I give back the salad would you rather I wait until my body poops it out. But then I decided I wouldn't put up with any more Abuse from them. I know that the world doesn't make it easy for people that need reading glasses menus on walls are the worst. Even with squinting the fine print is impossible to read but usually it's cal court or other non essential info. But in this case it is a DELIBERATE SET UP TO STEAL MONEY AND ABUSE ELDERS WHO CANT READ THAT FINE PRINT. THE DISRESPECT FROM THE WORKERS WHO IGNORED ME OR WALKED OFF WITHOUT SPEAKING AND THE OWNER ASKING FOR ME TO RETURN MY SALAD AND GETTING UPSET WHEN I MOTIONED TO DO JUST THAT ARE FURTHER EVIDENCE OF CUSTOMER ABUSE. I am 65 years old so not ancient but in no way does anyone deserve what got dishes out today. Just consider yourself warned. They don't actually try to help customers navigate their menu, they advertise a promo and then add exception on the fly, and expect customers to take the abuse / disrespect they including the owner dish out. There are many other places to eat so please if you read this go to a different restaurant or a different location!! read more

The bacon was undercooked, the tomatoes were falling apart from being so soft because they were overripe and the pickle was visibly old, discolored and limp. It was very disappointing. read more

I love this place. First, everything tastes great. Second, LOTS of options. Large sandwiches, huge salads, and soups. Have you tried the baked potatoes? Finally, a much better value than Panera. The sandwiches actually have meat on them, and you get points. Staff: Can't forget them. They take care of you. And because of this I eat here at least 4 times a week. Save me a spot inside. Walked in to a foul smell... Stood at the counter for at least five minutes while the cashier continued to sweep the floor. It was as though we were invisible. Absolutely no desire to take our order. I only swung by because my Chase card was offering cash back for this chain. You walk in and it's super confusing because most of the tables are covered in stacked takeout boxes, It's unclear if the dining room is open and there are 8x10 signs on the doors in 12 pt font detailing something about the dining room being closed but the sign is posted on the other side so im squinting and trying to read it backwards and there's another sign about umbrellas and storms which I don't bother to read because it's not pertinent at the time. I order and my family of 4 decide that dining al fresco is much preferred to eating amongst the boxes. They are running low on lemonade and the manager filling our order calls out in stern reprimand to his two coworkers "you can't let it get this low!" Tensions were high! Outside the sun is high and bright (about 11:30) We gather around a table and I begin to crank up the umbrella, simultaneously making a mental note to remember to put it back down after our meal...i'd decided that umbrella and storm probably meant that storms might carry the umbrellas away, im conscientious like that. So i'm like 3 cranks away from completion when this BAT OUT OF HELL comes screeching out of the restaurant straight at me! "STOP IT STOP IT YOU CANT USE THE UMBRELLA! THERES A SIGN ITS BROKEN!!!" I mean call me crazy, but like when something is broken anywhere else in life (toilets, vending machines, carnival rides) idk it's customary to post the sign like ON THE BROKEN THING! the crazy continues "IVE ALREADY HAD TO REPEAT MYSELF LIKE 4 TIMES TODAY ALREADY!!!!"...once again im thinking 4 times and it's only 11:30 AM??? clearly this 12pt font letter 20 feet away is not doing the job ... This lady is like screaming high pitched arms flailing ..people are staring...So i try to diffuse the situation reminding her that her energy level is much too high for an umbrella, communicating that i did not read the sign...and suggesting that she either remove the faulty umbrella or post a nearer, clearer sign...she offers up a "OH SO ITS MY FAULT, OH, SORRY, SORRY" in the most insincere apology uttered that day...she finally leaves, lunch is bleh soured by the intensity of the encounter, and my only solace was getting to narc on her bad behavior to the manager i ordered with earlier. I was introduced to McAlister's when I visited my sister in Georgia, and have enjoyed their sandwiches and giant spuds ever since. So I was very excited to see that one was open closeby in the University Mall shopping center! The location is big, tables were clean, and staff was very friendly. M y sandwich tasted good (I got a pick 2 with a half-spud and half-Horseradish roast beef sandwich), but unfortunately for a fast casual sandwich shop our food took foreverrrrrrr. My husband was also pretty unimpressed with the mac 'n' cheese (said it seemed like tv dinner mac 'n' cheese) and his own sandwich (the New Yorker.) I'm sure I'll be back because the location is so convenient and I do like the sandwiches, but hopefully management will take the repeated reviews mentioning long wait times and slow service to heart? read more

The 2 BLT + Avocado i received were certainly NOT worth the $26.00 that i paid. Plus tax, delivery fees it ended up being $36.00 with the tip for the driver. Which was the only part of this order that was worth it. The sandwich was skimpy, lettuce was not fresh, tomato was crushed, bacon soggy and all pushed to the front of the sandwich to make it look full, from the front only. The Mayo was hardly there. The worst part; NO AVOCADO. Doordash only refunded $7.50. They won't do any more. Doesn't quite add up to what I paid, did it. Anything to get out of accountability for providing a substandard product. I paid $12.95 for a sandwich that must have cost $2.50 to make, by the look of it. Soggy bread, not even toasted. Just a pathetic excuse for a sandwich. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I could go on, but don't want to make this a novel. There was even more, including gastric distress. Nothing like other franchise locations. The tea was not made with real sugar and had a strong chemical after taste. My cup of baked potato soup was half full and looked 100% like vomit. No toppings, red/brown color, and it tasted like someone had put half tortilla soup, half potato soup in there. Not a great experience. I should have realized that since 1 of the 2 drinks I ordered was missing it would have been prudent to check my order, but with the takeout order table literally as you walk in I didn't want to spend a lot of time there while people were trying to enter. Also as a realist I thought how many mistakes can they make on one order. So of course I get home and find that both sandwiches present had no bags of chips that we ordered and the one pickle we asked for was missing. This is why it's never a good idea to tip before you get your order. Lesson learned! read more

I ordinarily go to a different McAlister's location that I absolutely love... I love the food so much, I wanted to cater an office event with McAlister's but my regular McAlister's is not near my office so I tried this location in Fairfax I had never been to which is much closer to my office. McAlister's is a franchise, so each location is independently owned, and what difference between the two locations. I went to this/Fairfax location for lunch and to speak with someone about doing our catered event. This location was clearly not as organized or clean as the McAlister's I usually go to, but lunch was good so I gave them a pass on that. I spoke with the Manager about doing our event. She was very friendly and said they were wide open on the date I was doing my event and that they could deliver (I was speaking with her on a Monday for a delivery on Wednesday). I told her I'd call her back to finalize the order. She said that I should ask for her and that she's always there. I called back first thing the next morning (Tuesday) to finalize and pay for the order. I asked for the Manager I had spoken with... She wasn't in. I was told she had the day off but that the owner was in so I spoke with her. I told her I was finalizing a catering order for delivery that I had already spoken to the other Manager about. She asked what day it was for... I told her it was for delivery Wednesday morning. In a rude manner, the Owner said they can't deliver Wednesday morning. I told her that yesterday afternoon the Manager had told me Wednesday morning was perfect because they were wide open with no other catering deliveries that morning. The Owner said (with a flippant attitude), "Well she [the Manager] doesn't know my schedule and I'm not doing any deliveries on Wednesday morning". I thanked her and hung up... Now I'm in pinch to switch my catering order to another restaurant for an event happening tomorrow. The Owner was very dismissive and clearly couldn't have cared less about loosing the order or that she was putting me in a difficult spot for my meeting. Really liked this place, but not without flaws. The sandwiches are decently priced and flavorful. My ten year old loved his sandwich. My wife's Ruben was tasty and large enough, but only barely. My French Dip was adequate, but nothing to write home about. It was relatively quick and well priced, so we plan to go back. Might become a go-to staple. read more

I have been wanting to try out McAlister's for some time now and I had an opportunity the other day. The service was average and the food was okay. Horseradish Roast Beef & Cheddar Sandwich came on Ciabatta with caramelized onions, horseradish dijon, and sharp cheddar. I would not say the sandwich was very good, it was okay but I would not order it again. The roast beef lacked flavor or at least seemed that way as it was truly overpowered by the sweetness and flavor of the onions. You could not discern the variance of flavors in the sandwich well, it was just mediocre. The New Yorker came on rye bread with corned beef, pastrami, spicy brown mustard, and swiss cheese. This sandwich was far superior to the roast beef sandwich above but still was just okay. It could use a little more swiss or a swiss with a sharper flavor to balance the saltiness of the meat. The spicy brown mustard accents the sandwich well and of course it is brought together well by the marble rye. The mac and cheese was awful! It lacked flavor and it was cold. The coleslaw was lack luster and had little to no flavor. I am not sure whether the experience was good enough to give them another chance, but I am sure I will give them a second chance. read more

You simply place your order through the McAlister's website, they then outsource the delivery to a third party and provide you with no tracking information. Then after after your food hasn't arrived in an hour, you simply call McAlister's and they'll tell you to come pick the food up yourself because they aren't responsible for the third party they contracted to deliver your food. You get cold food and the convenience of picking it up yourself for only an additional $7 delivery fee. read more

heard great things about this place and it fell very short of what i expected. i ordered the big nasty, my boss had the Reuben , and my co worker only had the soup. the price of it was decent, i did expect to get a little bit more for 10 dollars. i could have bought roast beef and sandwiches at giant for cheaper. the big nasty was very disappointing. it was bland and the gravy was too salty. even when i ate them together it did not balance the flavor. also it was very hard to eat. it did live up to its name the big nasty, because i did slightly make a mess when i tried to eat it. the people who worked there were super friendly, but i did not really interact with them that much since i was simply picking up the order then left. i probably wouldn't come here again even if my boss was paying since i think i much rather get halal guys right next to the dunkin donuts. read more

First visited a McAlister's Deli when we visited in Texas. Great to find one near George Mason University! This restaurant does excellent catering--lunch or dinner, or office meetings. I heard others raving about how tasty their food/catering is. We were with a group, each of us ordered something different--and all six of us were so impressed! I have visited there numerous times since it is no too far from where I live and they have many options to choose from certain categories of salads, sandwiches, caterings, beverages, etc. The seating is outstanding and the atmosphere is very peaceful; soft music, appropriate room temperature, and excellent customer service. Whether you order for Dine-In or Take-Outs, they provide your items very quickly depending on how busy it is and also provide samples of their drinks and desserts which I like. I was definitely excited when I saw that they were building a McAlister's Deli across the street from campus. So today I decided to give it a try, when I first entered the building I was told that they were closed and when I asked "what time will you be open?", considering it was 9:30 and the door said they open at 9. I was told they weren't sure and then after asking the manager they were in fact open. I won't hold this against them, because there is always a learning curve and confusion when a business is just opening. Now for what really matters service and food. The service was friendly and the food was delicious. I had the BLT+A which was loaded with flavor and my broccoli cheddar soup was delicious. The tea was up to my standards from being spoiled with Texas locations. Overall it was a great experience. But that's almost ten bucks and worth about two thirds the price. Website has many problems. You are kicked out for inactivity for as little as 10 seconds without clicking, your whole order canceled and you have to start over. None of this is the fault of the branch. But this is. Opening day coupon was what made me try it. Guess what, to use you have to order in person. You can't online. So I was forced to stand in line, inside, with plenty of maskless people there eating. I wasn't about to take the crazy chances they were, so I ordered and waited outside for 10 minutes. Won't be going back.
