This review is for the hotel. They have one room that they allow dogs in and that's the one we chose since we had our dog with us. It's on the most south side of the building located away from everything else. Overall it's okay nothing amazing or special and not bad or anything. It's isolated so it's quiet. Haven't tried the other rooms since we always have our dog with us. read more

Kind of cool story in the midst of a somewhat revitalized OLD company town but the prices are a bit too steep and perhaps take advantage of people like me that drove 5+ hours to get there. I didn't stay at the hotel but went through the store, bought nothing, and the restaurant was closed and the "ice cream shop" had like no food so I only purchased a water. read more

Just stayed at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel for the first time and LOVED IT! I was there for a special event held in their upstairs venue reserved for 90 people and the venue space was roomy, well-appointed, and cozy at the same time. Very nice! Many attending the event stayed in the attached boutique hotel rooms at the opposite end of the upper floor. Very convenient and our room and at least one other I saw was fantastic! This place makes you feel like you're living a piece of history. A cozy common-area space just before reaching the rooms was heated with a wood-burning stove and appointed with comfortable sitting chairs -- a great space! Our room had beautiful wooden high ceilings, plenty of electrical outlets, excellent temperature control, strong water pressure, a deep tub, fast hot water, comfortable beds with layers of comfortable blankets (it was snowing outside), cozy chaise lounge and a bench at the base of one of our beds, and it was beautifully appointed with decorative taste. High-speed wi-fi was a plus! We had breakfast and lunch at Shirley's Cafe on the bottom floor (north end of the Mercantile) and it was delicious! The whole experience was a great way to spend the weekend and the event venue/hotel rooms/restaurant combination makes a perfect setting for corporate retreats! We didn't go prepared for a ski day, but the the turn off for the Mt. Shasta Ski resort was only 9 miles up the road. I travel a LOT and have experienced many forms of lodging. This one ranks high and I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience in this quaint little town of McCloud! read more

Stayed in this boutique hotel at the beginning of the month and it was wonderful, you check in at the gift store on the first floor and access your rooms via outside door. Good covid 19 precautions with rules posted in the communal dining hall, hand sanitizer available . Even though we knew most of the rooms were occupied it was quiet and peaceful and we didn't run into anyone. We stayed in the room 208 which had a huge bathroom with high ceilings. Great toiletries included, classic bath tub, and plenty of towels. Bed was comfy! Due to the pandemic we didn't use the pillows and opted for our own but they looked nice and soft! Spent 5 hours on the road and $700 to be poisoned by the kerosine heater in room 211. Unfortunately, I have a terrible illness and have a lot of limitations so room 211 was chosen with strategy. Also, people on break kept coming onto the balcony smoking their cigarettes which both toxins waffled into the room whenever the door was open. This is a dog friendly room, which means opening and closing the door every time the dog out to go potty And dealing with the ridiculous off gas of kerosene. It was quite the effort to get away, but much needed if you know anything about the life of a sick person. It was suggested that I didn't use the heater if it was so bothersome. However, the draft under the door kept kicking the heater on and it was snowing outside. I thought the request was a little insensitive seeing as I am a bag of bones with no climate coping skills due to the illness. That draft / gap under the door also allowed the kerosene off gas in the room and can be smelled while in bed. It wasn't enough to trigger the carbon monoxide sensor, but the old factories had no problem, picking up parts per million. How is this even legal? I have stayed in the hotel other times, and had a great time, no complaints. Never stayed in 211 until now. This was a horrific, worrisome experience instead of a peaceful getaway . read more

Charming spot! Nicely appointed rooms with vintage feel. We stayed in the Charles Miller room and loved it. The view is the best as you can see Mt Shasta clearly from the bed and (if you turn the two big chairs around). The king size bed is super comfy, the sheets were so soft. There is an extra bed in the annex to the room for those with a child. The bathroom is large and has a separate toilet and shower room. The shower head was messed up and I ended up holding it in my hand to aim correctly. They could use a hook or two to put towel/clothes. Also, no hair dryer to be found. I did like the shampoo and conditioner, high quality! Others have told you about the cute common kitchen. That is a plus! I'd come back! read more

I can't say enough about our stay at the McCloud Merc Hotel. We just stayed there this weekend and what a great experience. It was a weekend getaway for our anniversary and we were not disappointed in the least. Extremely clean and well maintained room and hotel. Upon finding out that it was our anniversary the hotelier offered to make us reservations at a near by restaurant, ( Harvest will get an excellent review as well) and there were flowers in our room when we arrived She was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and spacious with a fantastic rustic feel. Regrettably I didn't get pics of the room but I can tell you they wouldn't do it justice. The location is great as it was central to everything we wanted to do. We will definitely make this an annual getaway. read more

They've spent a lot of time and love on researching the history of the building and when you walk in it feels like you're walking back in time. If you're ever in Mccloud this is a must . My boyfriend and I were supposed to camp in McCloud... However, there was a serious lightning storm followed by heavy rain! I love lightning, but it was striking pretty close to camp so we opted to go next door and see if rooms were available at the Country Dance Hotel (I think that's what it was called, next to the RV park). Just our luck!! Darlene overheard that we needed a place to stay for the night because of the weather and she offered us her last room. Such a sweet woman. She gave us a discount for the night at $129. This place was amazing. We had the attic room (sorry, forgot exact name), which was really vintage and beautiful. The rooms are right above the shops on the first floor and I didn't hear a thing! The common area is really cute and nicely decorated. Anyway, our room was extremely neat and organized and clean! Lots of room, great decor, free wi-fi, and tv. Breakfast is included at the cafe on the corner too :P If you're a couple looking to stop by McCloud or on a date night, stay here. Staff is wonderful, lovely shops, great community, beautiful scenery, and a unique place to stay. (no pets so our dogs stayed in the car. lots of room to park as well) read more

Wow. The Mercantile Hotel far exceeded my expectations and got a fist bump from my hubby and son for finding this fine establishment to stay in. The check in is contactless, adhering to COVID guidelines. When you first walk in, there's a carpeted stairway leading up to the rooms. Each room is themed and so warm and cozy. The common area gives you the feel of home. The fireplace is lit each night and makes for beautiful ambience. It felt like home and we didn't want to leave! I LOVED THE MERC! I wish I could leave more stars for this place. My boyfriend and I came up for a few days to hike and check out the sights. This hotel exceed our expectations. The owners are immensely friendly and made our stay exceedingly pleasant.. they have great places to eat in this quiet small town the best in mount Shasta to be honest.. the photos don't do this hotel justice! The Shasta room is so comfortable they have a great tub perfect for after hiking and a very comfortable bed for a great nights sleep. We will definitely be coming back here regularly. I stayed in the Railroad Room two nights in June 2012 with two teens, 15 and 13. It was a huge room overlooking the main entrance with a queen bed and two twins. The room was immaculate, sparsely appointed with furniture: two nightstands, a small table and a console for a small flatscreen television. The mattresses were firm and comfortable. The bathroom had a soaking tub and separate shower with two sinks and a water closet. It was stylish and classic looking with white octagon floor tile. It was well appointed with upscale shampoo and conditioner. The only negative was the water pressure was low (it was slow to fill the tub), but adequate for showering. Dining was available downstairs at the White Mountain Cafe. We ate there two mornings, only for breakfast. The food was hearty, traditional, with HUGE portions: large flapjacks (about 8" in diameter!), biscuits and gravy (two large split biscuits smothered in a cup of gravy), humungous omelets (they must use 3 or 4 eggs), and reasonably priced. I only wish they were open past 9pm for dinner (we never made it back to the hotel before then). Our rate included a $20 credit for breakfast each morning. The hosts were service oriented by recommending a room that met our needs (3 beds). They managed to keep us in the same room two consecutive nights (originally the room we booked the first night wasn't available the second). They also left a useful map with information on accessing the McCloud River Falls, 5 miles east on Hwy 89. My only criticism: keep the wifi is working. There are three wifi hotspots, but they were not working the first night and most of the second night. I was trying to use my laptop over wifi but I had to do it on my iPad over the cellular network instead. Fortunately none of my work depended on the apps or files on my laptop. All in all we had a terrific time at the McCloud River Mercantile Inn and it will be our first choice for any return visit! read more

Wow...I really can't describe how wonderful this place is. Our stay here was not planned. We were driving down from Portland with no reservation, planning on staying in Sacramento, but because of a late start we decided to find a place sooner. I called and the owner answered who was so nice and helpful. He gave us an excellent rate on The Founder's Room. We had no idea what to expect. We opened the door and were AMAZED. The room was gorgeous, down to every detail. It had a fireplace and ball and claw footed tub with a separate two-headed shower. In the morning, there was hoout cocoa, tea and coffee out with every imaginable accoutrement (marshmallows, candies, sprinkles and candy canes). Breakfast at the local restaurant around the corner was included in the room. I only wish we had known of this place sooner and had more time to spend. If it was closer to home, I would come back often. Even with the distance, I plan on returning as often as possible. Seriously...this place is magical! read more

Since I have never been up to Mt. Shasta or McCloud, we decided to spend a long weekend here for our anniversary. I wanted to stay in a bit modern and less dated B&B and this is just your place. If you go to their website and read about the innkeepers bio, you will also find their story to be awe inspiring and you wonder if you can do something like that one day. There are four B&B's on Main street. The McCloud River Mercantile Hotel use to be Lumbar company store built in the 1890s. The InnKeepers gutted out the interior and did major renovations on it for past 7 years. It was around $130/night which is super reasonable compared to other B&B's that we have visited. The bed was comfortable, a bit squeaky though. Everything was clean and tastefully remodeled and designed with a touch of old town beauty. You have to check-in through the general store (clothing store where they sell soap, dishes, clothes, wine, stationary) and you get a $20/credit at the White Mountain Cafe next door for breakfast. Everyone we encountered were friendly and hospitable. It was probably a bit too quiet of a town for me but I think I might just revisit one day if I feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of SF. Four Fantastic nights at Mccloud's Mercantile Hotel. Kevin and Darlene have done an unbelievable job at restoring this historical building with such a rich past. The whole town is so quaint with such welcoming people. The location between Shasta and the different local Falls is ideal, waking up every morning with Mt Shasta outside the hotel is a site to be seen. Again Kevin and Darlene are marvelous hosts with a world of knowledge about the area. Don't think twice about staying at the Mercantile Hotel in McCloud. BTW last night we had a wonderful meal the "Harvest" restaurant on the McCloud Golf Course one mile away from the hotel. Other restaurants in town are great also. read more

A lovely stay in the Minnesota room. East-facing, second-floor (stairs only), with a view of cute Main St in McCloud. This pretty room is even nicer in person than in the photos - high ceilings, period details, bright & airy, very comfortable bed, great air conditioning (this area gets hot in summer), fast wifi, quiet & relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a TV with cable, but no fridge or coffee-making stuff in-room. Gorgeous large bathroom, double sink, claw foot tub with shower head. Really nice toiletries - Essential Elements rosemary shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and liquid and bar soap. The tub/shower was slightly difficult to step into for me since I'm short. Had to hop up to get into the bed, too! McCloud is such a quiet, sleepy little town. I loved the sense of peacefulness, the cute homes and businesses, and the gorgeous view of Mount Shasta. A five mile drive east on 89 will take you to wooded walking trails to several waterfalls. Not many places to eat dinner unless you want to drive to Mount Shasta City or Dunsmuir. I recommend making a reservation for dinner in the McCloud Hotel restaurant a few blocks down the street. I will definitely be back! read more

My husband and I decided to check out Mt Shasta for a get away weekend. This place is so peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. We enjoyed Middle falls and site seeing around the area. We stayed in the Shasta Winter Suite. The suite was so cozy and inviting. I personally love historic places and history. This place was a beautiful step back in time. Darlene, lady of the Mercantile is so gracious, accommodating and warm. She even set up a personal couple's massage to enjoy in our room when we arrived on Friday night. When the internet went down, she personally brought us a hot spot to enjoy Saturday evening after hours. The Meat Market Bar and Grill offered a delicious Ribeye and decadent Creme Brûlée Cheesecake for our Dinner our Friday night. Hilary, was such an attentive and gracious hostess. The little shops offer sweets, trinkets and other little treasures. My husband loved the fudge. The Bourbon Vanilla, Mistral Soaps smell absolutely amazing. We stumbled upon McCloud and this hotel for a place to stay on Christmas Eve close to Shasta Ski Park. Nothing in the town is new, and that is what gives it part of it's charm. The hotel had incredible service, a homey family feel, and is everything you might expect out of well loved and cared for 100 year old Victorian. We will definitely be coming back, regardless of the season. We stayed here last week while on our anniversary and were very impressed by the hotel. There was a quilting retreat going on so the rest of the rooms were booked by the quilting group, all of whom were very nice. The hotel has successfully kept the historic integrity of the building intact while adding some more modern features (slate in our bathroom, for example). It was done tastefully - no doilies or jacquard fabric anywhere! We had the Friday George room. It was small, but cozy and perfect for two people. The view of Mount Shasta from our room was breathtaking. The bed and sheets were so comfortable -- I wanted to sleep all day! Not only was Kevin, one of the owners, super friendly and helpful, the locals we spoke with were more than willing to recommend hikes and other activities in the McCloud area. They give you a credit for the cafe downstairs ($10 per person). Breakfast at the cafe was good -- I preferred the hashbrowns over the home fries as the home fries were basically boiled red potatoes. While the menu was limited it would be easy for anyone to find something to order. All in all, a great stay with friendly people, quiet and private rooms, and a very beautiful hotel. This has to be one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at! I stayed here for a wedding I was photographing and the entire hotel (its only 11 rooms so hotel is probably to "grand" of a word) was occupied by wedding guests. Each room is different and has a theme. Luckily since we knew everyone there, we got to see each room. My wife and I stayed in the 1940's room. Super quaint with a HUGE bathroom! The whirlpool tub was amazing! The beds were good. There are 2 double beds so my wife and I had out own bed! (hence the 1940's theme! LOL). Her bed was kind of squeaky but not bad at all. Almost the entire Inn has original hardwood floors so sound does carry. But if you arent with a bunch of party going wedding guests its not much to worry about. The best part is the breakfast credit you get at the cafe downstairs! For 2 days our total bill for breakfast was about $15! And the food was VERY GOOD! The cafe is a little small so if there are a lot of guests or a lot of locals there you will have to wait. If you are going up to McCloud this place is totally worth staying at! So much character and it is more an experience than just a hotel. read more

We stayed here last week with 2 couples and we had a wonderful time. The rooms were amazing, and exactly as shown on the website. Every room has a different theme from the past. We really felt like we were 100 years back in time, but with all the luxuries we could ask for. Our room had a bathtub-on-clawed-legs in the room, which reminded me of those old western movies. The bathtub really worked, and it was nicely set up with towels and soap. We also had a separate bathroom with double showers. Everything was spacious and clean. The bed was a bit too soft for me, but that is just my super-personal opinion. Because of our late check-in, we arrived to find the hotel keys taped to the door with our names on it. I guess McCloud is a very honest town! We could just go to our rooms without seeing any staff members, and we paid the next day in the store downstairs. Breakfast downstairs was great as well, and it was a nice surprise that we had a 20 dollar credit per room. Everybody was super-friendly, and we wish we could have stayed one more night. My wife and I had the pleasure of spending our 2nd wedding anniversary at the Mercantile Hotel. It was one of the nicest experiences we've had in a long time. The innkeepers were friendly, warm, and an absolutely wonderful family to chat with. Both mornings started off with great full breakfasts in the adjoining restaurant served by very friendly staff. Our room (The Founders Suite) was beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean, and refreshingly quiet. The fresh flowers, wonderful claw foot tub, and kind personal touches from the innkeepers made for a very welcomed stay. Visiting from the fast-paced Silicon Valley, it was truly a revitalizing experience to unwind by the window overlooking the railroad tracks at dusk while listening to nothing but the whisper of the wind and ponder life. We can't comment positively enough on how great of a time we had at this wonderful establishment. We really appreciated how everyone went out of their way to ensure that we had an enjoyable and comfortable stay. This is undoubtedly the place that we'll be coming back to the next time we visit the McCloud/Shasta area. read more

Interesting, laid-back hotel with unique rooms. It is not a traditional B & B. Each room is given a $20.00 breakfast credit for the cafe next door. We (two of us) ran $8.00 over; not including tip. The problem with this system is if four+ people are staying, $20.00 does not cover the meal. I like the sitting area with the wood stove. A microwave and glassware is available. I wouldn't book a room adjacent to this area. We have stayed here twice and like the owner. He's a nice guy and very approachable. First we stayed in the Hot and Tot room and this time the Founder's Suite. We both loved the Founder's Suite; it is so unique. If you want unique gifts and are heading north, look about this small town. It's surprising but there are unusually nice items from clothing to candy and MUCH less expensive than places in Oregon such as Ashland and Jacksonville. Buy your gifts and souvenirs here. read more

I stayed here for an evening when we decided to go up north on a last minute trip to see Mt Shasta. We were given the tour of the hotel and as soon as we saw the space, I knew we had to stay here! The staff was unbelievably accommodating, the bed was like a cloud and the amenities were awesome from free WiFi, to a complementary yummy breakfast in the wildflower bakery downstairs (you really don't want to miss this new restaurant) to the snacks and coffee/tea/hot chocolate always available. This is such a wonderful hotel, run by good people and priced surprisingly well. After my father (a 20+ year resident of McCloud) passed away recently, my family has made three back-to-back trips to McCloud to settle his affairs. On all three trips we've stayed in different rooms of the Mercantile Hotel, in groups ranging from two people (in the "Grandma's Attic" room) up to 5 (in the "Railroad Room"). The building is a wonderful mix of historic and modern, with a toasty wood stove outside our door and relatively speedy free Wifi internet access. Also, some of the rooms include a massive "soaking tub," which was an enormous hit with my family. The owners / managers of the hotel are wonderful people, and went out of their way to accommodate our unusual requests and circumstances as we dealt with the loss in our family, and we'll always be grateful to them for this kindness. The fact that their hotel is wonderfully restored and appointed, and the fantastic White Mountain Cafe is right downstairs, is even more reason to keep doing business with the Mercantile Hotel. Seriously, it doesn't get much better than this, regardless of what size town you're in. read more

My wife and I came here as a stop on our honeymoon. What a great place. The innkeepers, Kevin and Darlene are delightful hosts that made us feel welcomed and like members of the family. They provided us with maps of the area and suggestions on "must see" places. The store is stocked with wines and sodas as well as various trinkets and clothing items. We stayed in the Charles Miller room and had a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta from our bed. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. The whirlpool tub in the room was very relaxing and the bathroom with the walk in shower was huge. This place was amazing! We pulled up late (after hours) with no reservation because we were meant to camp but it was snowy and freezing. They opened up a shop for us and checked us in. This hotel is extremely cute, historical and shabby chic! So happy to stumble upon it. Everyone we encountered was absolutely delightful.
