Came in for lunch... lured in by the advertised lunch special: Cajun shrimp po' boy, seafood gumbo and fries for $17.50. How can you pass that up? At my visit they seemed horribly understaffed and so service suffered. Severely. It didn't look THAT busy to me, but according to the continuous and rather loud complaints from the wait staff one would think that they were ambushed. So that took away from the experience. If I want to listen to people complain I can get that for free at home or the office. Regardless I chose a Champagne Sangria to go with my meal and it was a good choice. Light refreshing sparkling and with fruit. What more could you ask for? The po boy was delicious and overflowing with fried shrimp. The gumbo was not the best I ever had, but not bad by any means. I am used to bit more umpf in my gumbo. Fries were good, nice and crisp on the outside with a tender middle. Just how I like them. Alltogether not a bad deal. We wandered into this bar as we were out walking around downtown Indianapolis. The place was surprising busy, it was Thanksgiving, but luckily did not have to wait long to be seated. They had a special holiday menu being served and the waitress kindly let us order from both menus. On the holiday menu they had a butternut squash soup and it was surprisingly delicious! I was nervous to try it and the waitress, Leona, told me not to worry she would bring me a sample! I appreciated the offer and took her up on it. The soup was thick and flavorful. From the color I could tell they must've added a lot of broth or was heavy handed with the cream. Either way it worked and I happily ordered a bowl. We also had an order of fries. I can be picky about fries and these were on point. They were thin and crispy with a hint of truffle and Parmesan. We split a creme brûlée which was delicious. The vanilla was perfectly balanced and the top nice and crisp. There was lots of fruit on top which was different but I liked it. For drinks I had a spicy margarita which was made perfectly. There was another drink I wanted but was told they were out of the ingredients. Because it was along the lines of a spicy margarita, the waitress said she would have the bartender make me something similar. Mi Amor ordered what we could only to think could be their signature drink and it was good! It's definitely more of a stiffer drink so beware but it comes branded with M&S. I hadn't been to this location in a few years and there has been some changes inside. The vibe is calmer and the lights are kept dim. It's a nice affect inside if you are out and about on a date and want to feel cozy. The seating is more table style than cozy but they do offer a few booths. If you're not aware, McCormick & Schmidt is a well-known upscale steak and shrimp chain located in the Hilton Hotel on Illinois and Market St. Parking can be found at metered street parking, parking garages, or valet parking for $14. The valet will offer you a coupon for a free appetizer (up to $13), but it can not be used during happy hour. Bummer! Four of us met today to take advantage of Happy Hour offered Monday through Friday from 3:30 - 6:30 in the bar area only. The attached menu photo reflects an excellent variety of appetizers ranging from $6, $8, $10, and $12 with at least 3 items under each price category. On a couple of specific days, a special item is offered at happy hour prices. For example, on Wednesday, there is a flavorful, well seasoned shrimp boil for $15. Beer, cocktails, and wines are also on the happy hour menu. A one drink minimum of $3.40 per person is required to order off the happy hour menu (non-alcoholic or alcoholic). Sigi ordered the Gold Margarita ($9) and said it was excellent with a small kick. Kerry ordered a bottled beer, and I started off with a Millionaire Coffee , under desserts, with three types of coffee liquer topped off with a large dollop of whipped cream. It was delicious and exactly what I wanted. The second drink was the M & S Ice Tea (a long island), and it was well made as well. The bar area is casual with an attractive decor but isn't extremely large and doesn't accommodate groups well. They have a large bar top but not conducive for the conversation of a group. There are only 3 regular height tables, with the remaining tables all being high tops. 1 6-top is available, and the remaining tables are 2 tops. Each of us ordered a Shrimp Boil ($15), which is the Wednesday, Happy Hour special. My bowl had 7 unpeeled shrimp, 1 medium boiled potato, 3 thick pieces of sausage, and 2 very small chunks of corn on the cob. Afterward, I felt some type of bread would have been nice. Everything was well-seasoned, not overcooked, and by itself is enough for a smaller appetite. Next time, I'll most likely split either the Tomato Bruschetta, Asian Calamari, or the Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps with another person at our table. I have to say peeling the shrimp was a messy ordeal, and we could have used extra napkins (our fault for not ordering), but we especially needed wet wipes. Our server, Dee, was friendly, attentive, but not intrusive, kept beverages refilled (ice tea, sodas, and waters), and promptly removed unclean dishware. She, of course, would have to disappear for a quick trip to the kitchen to grab customer orders, plus she was the only server in the bar area with the exception of the bartender. We sat next to the large windows overlooking the valet driveway on Illinois Street. This is a great spot to people watch. I'm sure I'll visit again during happy hour in the near future. First time dining at McCormick & Schmick's. I got a small salad with candied walnuts on it and my husband got the salmon. For an appetizer we got the shrimp kisses. My husband said his salmon was very good and my salad was decent. Not anything too overwhelming or that I would return specially to eat anything. The shrimp kisses were very good! Even though I don't like shrimp, I did try these and thought I would probably order them again. The server was fantastic. Very attentive and got everything right the first time. We had a gift card to go here, and I don't think I would return on our own dime, but it was a solid dining experience overall, just not blown away by anything. read more

We went to McCormick & Schmick's in downtown Indy for their Devour Indy menu. For $45, I got the clam chowder, crab and shrimp stuffed salmon and the upside down apple pie. The presentation of the salmon was great. I dived right in before I remembered to take a pic. It was literally the best salmon I have ever eaten. Once I started, I couldn't stop eating long enough to take that picture. I mentioned how much I loved the salmon so many times that my wife asked if I didn't like the salmon she made at home. I recovered quickly and said hers was the best too ... the best not stuffed with crab and shrimp. I thought by reading the menu the dish may be a bit rich. It was not. My wife and I were going to split meals. (She ordered the 13oz Ribeye for a $10 up charge over the $45 fixed price). Have I mentioned how great my salmon was?? It was so great that I only gave her a bite rather than half the meal. She wasn't upset though. Her ribeye was fabulous as well. It was cooked perfectly and had a great taste. Had 7:15 reservations on Friday night. We were seated noticed only 2 other tables with customers. No one came to the table to greet us even to offer water. We waited over 15 minutes & decided to leave. It was like a funeral home very quiet and awkward. The girl who sat us said have a good night when we left oblivious we were there for only 20 minutes. Have to give the manager credit she called me later asking if anyone greeted us at the table. I told her no we waited & waited then decided to leave. She was very apologetic. We had 415 pm reservations as we needed to be off to the Bill Burr show leaving at 6 pm. The Hilton gave us a free appetizer which was a nice start to our stay. This place gets 4 stars for location, decent food and one amazing server! Judy, our server, is the real mvp. I honestly don't even want to talk about the food because there was nothing that really stood out. The dessert was really good and everything had flavor but Judy was everything. I wish there could be a Judy in every restaurant I frequent. She was nice, attentive, observant, mindful and discerned what I didn't like on my plate and took that as an opportunity to make it right. Here's what made me a fan of Judy: 1) First thing that impressed me with her was that SHE wasn't happy with our bread and she came out to tell us that it was a little over cooked and she didn't want to serve it to us. So she asked us if that was ok and it would be a few minutes before another one would come out. #mindful 2) I ordered a glass of Malbec to go with my steak. She came back just to make sure she got it right. I think she forgot but she didn't want to bring out my mom's drink until she had both of our choices correct. #selfcorrection 3) Although she had other tables she checked on us periodically to make sure we were good. #professional 4) When she brought my dinner she discerned my face and already said what I was thinking about the plate size and she took to heart my comment on the portion size. Little did I know she took a mental note of that and held onto it. #attentive 5) When we asked for our bill she brought out a small complimentary dessert for my mom and I to share saying that she wanted us to leave with a great experience! #thoughtful We weren't complaining nor were we looking for freebies. Honestly a little disappointed by our food. I had really high hopes for this restaurant because its a nicer one. We had reservations and were sat right away in a booth, but it was very drafty from the door opening and closing. Our server was pretty good. He seemed more like a sales person, he kept trying to upgrade everything as if he would receive commission. He was also very jittery & shaky. We received our food as ordered. BOTH our meals were soooooo under seasoned. disappointed in this. our fish tasted like there was no seasoning at all on it. thankfully there was sauce on it. my mashed potatoes and veggies were also under seasoned. the plus to our night was the dessert. Seared scallops, potatoes and crabmeat hash, sauteed spinach. Sounded good, tomato pesto. ( tomato paste) Not so much The scallops were overdone and sandy, the hash wasn't seasoned. I understand that crab is delicate and can be overpowered easily but there wasn't even a hint of S &P. The spinach was cooked in nothing and out on the plate. The dish looked great. Tasted like nothing. Two if us got that. Ugh 13 oz. black Angus dry rub. Cooked well. Was pretty thin, seasoned well. Mashed potatoes which needed seasoning. It is not often that you get to try a "high" end restaurant chain in 2 different states in a week's frame, but I did! This was my second time experiencing this particular chain. I'd just like to point out that the experience I had at this M&S and the one in Baltimore, was night and day! I guess I should consider the fact that the one in MD is closer to the sea so it does have an advantage over anything else that is more inland. There were about 5 of us. One of the individuals in our table asked if the bartender could make an Aperol spritz, after asking for a "refresher of the drink," our server left to speak to the bartender. The server stated that the drink could be done. I had not tasted an Aperol spritz prior to that day, and if I had had my way I never would have again. It was too bitter and tasted one dimensional. Later that week I'd end up having it again and discovered that the M&S version just wasn't the best. I did enjoy the ginger apple drink I had. It was a mixture of zesty, sweet, and refreshing. I'd like to talk about our server. She was a lovely lady but she was doing one thing at a time and it prolonger our meal process. The server ordered our waters. Then, she ordered our drinks. Then, she brought our waters, then the drinks. After it was ordering the appetizer, then later the main--- oh you get the idea. It was a one at a time situation that had all of us starving and just wanting our meals. On to the oysters. We ordered some. Let me tell you, that taste will never leave my mouth. To say that the oysters were fishy is an understatement. The freshness, or lack thereof, was the complete opposite of the M&S I had in Baltimore. I know, it is not fair to compare considering that B'more has the coast advantage state-side. Still, if the attempt to make seafood is not going to be fresh or decent, then it would be best to just not do it as it tarnishes the reputation that the chain is supposed to have. The menu here was very small in comparison to the one in Baltimore; but it probably makes sense as they are further from sea and might be limitedin options. I ordered the Hawaiian Bigeye Ahi Tuna (like I did in B'more) and was very disappointed. It did not taste to the same quality as the other ahi tuna. It probably had to do with the fact that by the time my meal arrived I was past the point of hunger. I was just not impressed with the experience and have tried to block it out of my mind to no avail. I realized I needed to write down my thoughts of it so I can now move on. If you're in IN, I'd suggest you skip this location and just wait until you're in MD or closer to the sea. read more

Ok... I came here because I was staying nearby. M&S is a chain, but usually a pretty solid place, so I gave it a go. I learned one lesson in Indianapolis... don't order salmon unless you're in the NW. Or at least at a better restaurant, where they can source it from the NW or Alaska. I ordered the crab and shrimp stuffed salmon... there was neither crab nor shrimp to be found. The salmon itself was lackluster, and had a nice grey streak on it. It also had red peppers, not a listed ingredient. And whatever else was in the "stuffing" (unidentified items), part of it was cold. Overall, it was edible, just not very good, and I didn't get sick or anything. Didn't take my chances on dessert and got out of there. read more

Went for a birthday celebration! Calamari and crab cakes were great as appetizer and got a Berry Berry Mojito which was the bomb! Wait time for main entree was over an hour which was surprising. Ordered Blackened Mahi Mahi with sides of sautéed spinach with mashed potatoes and crabmeat sautée. Very disappointed with the Mahi Mahi however the sides were ok. The crabmeat sautee was very flavorful! For the cost of the main entree would have expected much better. Definitely had better for less at other Indy seafood establishments. From the time that I walked in, I knew that I would have the most pleasant experience. I was greeted and seated within 3 minutes. The waiter was very attentive and everything was fresh. They took my drink order immediately. After the drinks arrived, the waiter offered a suggestion and took the appetizer order (Shrimp Cocktail) within minutes. It was delicious. The entrees consisted of a Wedge Salad (which was fresh and flavorful) & the 20 oz Ribeye Steak (which was tender & delicious). I then ordered the Pineapple Brown Butter Cake. Scrumptious!!! Came here for dinner with some customers. Food was good, but fish dishes were tiny! The ones who ordered steak did better by far than the ones who ordered fish! And this is a seafood restaurant!!! I had Mahi Mahi on a bed of risotto. If you see on the picture for $35 this amounted to roughly 3oz of fish and 4oz of risotto. And risotto was just terrible! If I could give zero stars, I would. It was so bad it was shocking. What is even more shocking are that on Open Table, where I booked it, there are other recent diners who rave about it being great. There is no way their experience could be that much better than ours. We went there to celebrate my son's birthday and we were so excited. I have been to McCormick & Schmick's in Chicago and it was great so I thought the brand would hold up. The wait staff is very inattentive, the atmosphere is blah. We ordered a dozen oysters to start and they were the size of dimes. I am from the northeast and I've never seen anything like it. I guess that should have been our red flag. I ordered the twin lobster tails with lobster mashed potatoes. The lobsters were over cooked and terrible. The lobster mashed was flat with some kind of orange sauce poured over it. Real lobster mashed are fluffy with actual lobster pieces mixed in. My son ordered filet mignon with truffle fries. The steak was flavorless and there were only about 5 fries on his plate. The grand finale was that they finally delivered the birthday dessert and it was chocolate molten cake that had been microwaved and it was inedible. We were so incredibly disappointed. Crab cake starter was among the best I've ever had. Very good briny east coast oysters were also very good. Although this iteration of Landry's is a seafood focused eatery, the steaks are also excellent. Tami enjoyed a succulent perfectly prepared medium rare 6oz Filet. The server, Michael, asked her to cut into it to check 'doneness' before leaving our table side. I ordered the swordfish which reinforced my previous experience with this fish no matter where I had it - it's dense, fairly dry and lacking flavor. Not this restaurant's problem and I really wanted to like it. I just don't care for it so won't be ordering again. Sides were exceptional (fingerlings, Brussels sprouts and spinach). My husband and I dined at M & S's on Sunday, October 6th to celebrate our three month wedding anniversary. The service we had was impeccable, and each course provided a different seafood flare. As an appetizer, we shared a plate of the shrimp kisses (recommended by server) and they were delicious! Our main entree's were sea bass and rib-eye - both were good, but nothing life changing. My favorite course was dessert! We had an Upside Down Walnut-Crusted Apple Pie with Cinnamon Ice Cream that was absolutely divine!!! The pie was nice and warm, which made the ice cream melty and delicious. We finished the whole thing even though it was a good-sized piece. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience. A few things to note, I would not recommend this restaurant for people who do not enjoy seafood. The menu provided a few other options, but you could tell that seafood was their specialty. Also, the lighting in the restaurant was so dim that at times it was very difficult to read our menu. In fact, we ended up using the flashlight on our phones! I understand the ambiance they're trying to create, but when it affects eyesight I think we have a problem. The location of the restaurant was excellent - right on Illinois Street in the Hilton Hotel. We valet parked (which was super efficient) and received a free appetizer that we promptly used! I thought that was such a nice touch since we would've ordered an appetizer anyway. The last thing I would recommend is making a reservation or arriving closer to when they open at 4pm. We made a reservation for 4pm to avoid the dinner rush and that was the BEST decision! We almost had the restaurant to ourselves which allowed our waiter to spend more time with us. M&S is a mainstay in Downtown Indy for good reason - the food and the service. I know that I can always visit, and have a good meal, quality drinks, and be treated well. Though the service during my last visit left room for improvement, that experience is certainly outside of the norm. One little secret, that a lot are not aware of, is their happy hour menu. You can receive a variety of items from pub-style burgers to calamari, salads, fries, and everything in-between for under $10. Pro tip: visit with friends and share a variety of menu items. The dinner menu is what you'd expect from a fine dining restaurant attached to a nice hotel - surf, turf, and bird are the order for the day. The wine menu is fairly extensive, allowing for some nice pairings. The space itself is filled with dark woods, leather, and plush upholstery, all of which give a feel of substance and "weightiness" to the bar and main dining areas. If you're a fan of classic comforts, and in the area looking for a traditional meal, McCormick & Schmick may be worth a visit. read more
