I have mixed feelings about this location. On one hand it's never that busy when I go in and the staff are always decent. The food is usually cooked well. I had to come here to try the banana pie they serve here yet don't in California. I was disappointed that it was the banana pie at first as I was hoping for taro or the coconut one. The outside is super crispy, they still fry their pies here which makes the difference and serves to upset me that we no longer do it in California. Crispy outside, the inside was a moist banana with cinnamon. It was REALLY good. I mean wow. Again, I am not big into bananas but this remanded me of a yummy bread pudding or some other type of decadent dessert that you would plunk out far more than $1 for. Yes I got breakfast. First off, the service here was REALLY slow. No matter if it was later at night or early morning, it's like everybody was still asleep lol. The restaurant itself was pretty filthy and had a strong B.O. smell to it as well. While looking to grab a quick breakfast (which was definitely not quick whatsoever), I ordered the Portuguese Sausage with Eggs and Rice (5.29). The sausage reminded me of a mix of ham and packaged breakfast sausage. There was a huge amount of rice to this...yet I found the whole bottom of the container to be swimming in grease for some reason. I also decided to try the Hupia Pie (1.25) thanks to some convincing advertising lol. It's crispy on the outside while the inside has a semi-sweet coconut filling. Once again per race traditions, I ate here the night before running the Honolulu Marathon. On this occasion for the very first time, I ordered and paid for my meal via the McDonald's app on my smartphone. They would started putting together my order once I arrive at the McDonald's. I had to check-in on my app and show them my order confirmation on my app. It would seem that I might have been their first customer that has used this feature. The cashier had to get her manager to help out. Eventually they figured it out. While waiting for my food, I noticed that they had installed a couple of those ordering kiosks. Unfortunately one of them was out of commission and had the blue screen. Overall it was really nice to have your order already taken of before you even get there. Depending on the time of day you come here, it might be a normal Hawaiian themed McDonald's, or it might be a disaster area of drunk people enjoying food after a long night out. In the evening hours, there is always private security and police so that no one gets murdered...again. Otherwise, this is a fairly normal McDonald's! The staff here is friendly and works quickly and efficiently. The dining room was fairly recently remodeled and features nice scenes of old Waikiki. The building itself has a nice high ceiling with great natural light. Prices are cheap for Waikiki, but a little higher than other McDonald's in the area. This is not one that's easy to drive to; it's meant for foot traffic and is conveniently located along Kuhio in central Waikiki. As is typical, you can get your food to go. The lines here often get along and disorganized, be sure to pay attention; line up on the left, get your food by number on the right. All in all, this is a typical McDonald's that caters mostly to tourists and the late night crowd. You know the food quality, you know what you're eating. I surprisingly had a good experience at this McDonald's. We just briefly walked by after supper at Duke's and wasn't sure if we should buy something for a toddler who didn't eat much of his meal. And to my surprise they had TARO PIE! I've never seen taro pie in Canada and I was kinda excited. So I purchase one for each of my family members. And OH MY GOSH.. this is the best pie I've ever had in my WHOLE LIFE! And I don't like pie at all... like borderline hatred for pies. But this is the best pie I've ever had! This McDonald's looks nice but don't let it fool you. 1st off there are a lot of homeless people who hang around outside. I know the can't control that but it's something to note. Second we tried to order sweet tea and they didn't have any. I also asked for grape jelly and they also did not have any. After we finished eating we asked where the restroom was and they don't have one. It's kind of frustrating when you have to go look for a restroom outside of a restaurant. I asked three employees where the bathroom was and all three said they have no bathroom. When I asked the employees where they go to the bathroom they said, "Oh, we have a bathroom for us". A restaurant without a bathroom for their patrons??? Isn't this against the law? (Apparently, not--read on.) I thought that if a restaurant had 20 seats or more, then they had to provide a restroom for their customers too? (I was wrong.) I've never seen a McDonald's without a restroom. As a matter of fact, most Travel Books list McDonalds as a place to go to if you need to use a restroom--especially in Europe, for example. Yes, on Oahu, they still serve their apple pies F-R-I-E-D! $1.00 for two? By all means... At the time, they were almost promoting a special banana cream pie. One of the really cute things about Hawaii is that even their Mickey Ds are different. This one is shaped like a cute Polynesian hut. Parking here probably sucks, but chances are you'll be here on foot if you're a tourist. Having free Wi-Fi here is AWESOME for us foreigners. This is probably one of the best things the head office has done in years. Some of the food items here are uniquely Hawaiian as well. If you're from out of state, you HAVE to try the Spam + eggs breakfast. It was awe-inspiring. Just like a Big Breakfast back home, but with 2 scoops of rice instead of hash browns, and well, the 2 slices of Spam goodness. While vacationing in Hawaii, you would think McDonald's would be one of the LAST places you would eat, especially with Hawaii's ample supply of local food, but for people in the know, we come here to try the special regional MickeyD's menu. Here's what I tried during my stay: SAIMIN: I wasn't expecting noodles to be any good from a McDonald's so my expectations weren't dashed. It was basically a very bland cup noodle, but with what seemed like soba noodles, a bit of egg, kamaboko, and seaweed. I needed to add the little packet of soy sauce because the broth was so bland. I won't be ordering this again, but at least I can say I tried it. TARO PIE: It seems that the special pies rotate on the island. I was hoping to try the Haupia Pie, but they didn't have it this time. :( The taro pie was rather disappointing. I love taro, but this pie was strangely pink (when usually taro-flavored items are purple-ish) and didn't taste very taro-y. I could sort of taste the taro if I took a big bite of it, but it wasn't enough to get me to finish the thing. I only managed to eat about 1/3 of it before giving up. It was also fried (and I prefer my pies in the baked form). LOCAL DELUXE BREAKFAST PLATTER: This breakfast platter came with Spam AND Portuguese Sausage. I thought rice from a McDonald's would be terrible, but to my surprise, it was actually okay. Interestingly, they also give you a small packet of soy sauce, but we thought the Spam was plenty salty for us and adding soy sauce to the rice or eggs would be overkill. The sausage was actually pretty tough. It kind of reminded me of those Chinese reddish sausages you eat with rice, but flattened and not as sweet. I split the order with my friend because we didn't want the sodium causing us to swell up when we went to the beach. Haha! Another special thing with Hawaiian McDonald's is that they serve FRESH PINEAPPLE with their Extra Value Meals. I thought this was cool, but didn't order off the value menu so I didn't get a chance to try it. The prices on the island McDonald's are higher than the prices found on the mainland and I assume the pineapple is probably to blame. My husband grew up in Hawaii and he always talked about the Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice at McDonalds so of course we went. It was pretty good! They give you three pieces of sausage, eggs and rice with soy sauce. The service was pretty good. My eggs were a little runny and since I'm pregnant I asked for it to be recooked. I could validate that because when I got my food, it was piping hot and it tasted fresh. So, YES, SERVICE IS SLOW but the food was made to order. Depending on what you want, it depends. Yes, I agree that the layout of the McD's could have been better. All this for $5.49. Now why can't the McDonald's in the mainland offer this type of dish for breakfast? If you don't like spam, you can opt for the Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice platter for $4.49, or, if you like spam and not the Portuguese sausage, you can opt for the spam, eggs and rice platter for $4.49. Or...if you want the usual, they offer the regular menu items. As others have mentioned, the McDonald's offers FRIED apple and cherry pies for $1 each...yay!
