My experience in two characters ":(". I didn't get my signature sauce. I didn't even get my chicken tenders, which was going to be the main course of my meal. The lady on the other side of the speaker was slow and never correctly understood what I was saying. Another day, we decided to give this McDonalds another try for breakfast. Unfortunately, it was another negative experience. We ordered a local platter and at the window, they handed it to us sideways and it completely opened up and spilled. There was nothing we could really do at this point, and the worker seemed extremely unhelpful so we ended up eating the rice, eggs, and spam out of the paper bag. Visiting from California and as always, my boyfriend has to eat mcdonalds every time we travel. I ordered the Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice. It was $5.99 which was decent. The food is quite salty here. Rice was both undercooked and over cooked. Some parts were hard while others were too soft. The eggs tasted like pure butter & the sausages were saltier than spam. Burgers, fries, shakes, and soda pop are what sells nowadays in this 21st century life and we just go along with it. You got to admit though, it's a winning formula. McDonald's has been on the scene for 50 years and it's good what it does. Fast food nation doesn't go away, but it adapts to whatever the people want, but still keeps the flavors of beef and potatoes, and sugar all in one confined space for everyone to enjoy. McDonald's is pretty much everywhere nowadays, especially here on Maui. For most, McDonald's is pretty much the low cost option for those who want to live large while on a budget. For some, it's fast and convenient. For me, it's a mix and match of both options. I found this McDonald's location at the Kahana Gateway shopping plaza and decided on having lunch there on a brisk Saturday afternoon. The scene is pretty much straight forward and the food itself is what you know and love already. Like many McDonald's anywhere around the country, you know how it is already. This location is pretty good and the location was pretty much on the way to Kapalua, so it was nice to spot this place. The overall experience here at the McDonald's located at the Kahana Gateway shopping plaza @ 4403 Honoapilani Highway was very average and the service was pretty good. It's situated north of the Kaanapali Beach hotels complex, but not quite to Kapalua. It was interesting to see a tourist family argue about what to buy ahead of me, and they ultimately got $25 worth of stuff before I got a chance to order. My favorite item at any McDonald's is the chicken mcnuggets for lunch or dinner. I know now they have the "All Day breakfast", but I usually have my favorite breakfast burrito in the morning while on the go. On this trip to this Maui McDonald's, I ended up getting the 10 piece chicken mcnugget meal (large) along with a mcdouble burger. That's a lot of calories, I suppose, but I know that I need those calories for the 13.1 mile footrace that I about to do the next morning. I do like the fact that McDonald's prides itself on being a family friendly restaurant. They have free wifi, so that's always awesome. The restaurant itself is relatively clean and their staff is always doing something behind the counter. You always can get your food order within 5-7 minutes, depending on how busy it is. McDonald's accepts major credit cards, which is always a good thing. Unless their credit card machine goes down, you should be good to go. There is plenty of parking here at the Kahana Gateway shopping center, so that's always a good thing. I'm not sure if the Maui Bus comes up here, but best bet is to rent a car for sheer convenience. For what it's worth though, while it's not the healthiest option to have on a daily basis, McDonald's does fulfill that void of meals options while on the go. My experience here at this particular McDonald's was pretty much touch and go, where you order and eat - if you are dining in, and leave when you're done. The staff here at McDonald's was friendly and they seem to be enthusiastic when they want to be, especially on a random Saturday afternoon. There's no shortage of options here in west Maui, but if you crave a certain cuisine and need your McDonald's fix, feel free to come here if you are on your way to or from Kapalua. 3.5 stars overall. 3.0 stars for the food. 4.0 stars for the service. Bad: Yes McDonald's is stereotyped as bad..but let me say that you are correct. Extra tip: Avoid this at all costs especially if you are in a hurry. Everyone knows about McDonald's but idrc because clearly they didn't. MENU: Pretty wide variety even though unhealthy (even though we already knew that) PRICES: Incredibly high even for Hawaiian standards Service: Do I even have to say it. Took about 8 minutes to take our order but that was the best part. The car in front of us didn't even have that long of an order but they took their sweet time moving slowly. We waisted literally a good 20+ minutes in the line. When we finally got our turn it took about another 18+ minutes to get our food. Keep in mind we only got a large coke and a medium fry which they have ready btw. Next the man tried to pawn a small coke off as a large. Warning, No refills. Screwed up order. Completely disregarded lettuce only on receipt and gave us burger with everything on it. No apologies, just annoyed with us. OMG...these people are pretty much inept. I visited this McDonald's 4 times on my visit to Maui. each time I had an issue. most issues were taken care of but wow...i saw numerous people come in from the drive through with issues, many customers walking back in after leaving with wrong orders...EVERY TIME I WAS THERE! My hotel is basically across the road so I walk over in the morning to get my coffee and a sandwich. first experience, I ordered a large coffee and a sausage mcgriddle. I was there and understood what he was asking. The other customer had been waiting 10 minutes for his order.. not sure if he got that resolved. I left. 2nd experience...I walked in for dinner... had buy one get one free quarter pounder coupon. ordered and got a soft drink. Woman behind the counter grabbed a medium cup, two came out..one dropped on the floor...she picked it off the floor and put it back in the cup holder..my jaw dropped as well as a few other customers in line...I'm sure the people behind me ordered a small or large drink. wow..just wow..older person did this..not a teenager...The most upsetting thing was the manager never came over to help or even ask what was going on..just his by the drive thru..she saw there was issues but never engaged...wow! 3rd experience.. my dad came with me and we ordered 2 meal specials which consisted of 2 quarter pounders, 2 small fries, 2 pies and 2 drinks (any size) we asked for 2 taro pies (local only pies) the meals are 6.50 each plus tax. Again during our ordering process, a young man came up and tried to explain what was wrong with his order. the woman had a deer in the headlights stare. he showed her his receipt and told her what was wrong. she apparently didnt understand because he had come up 2 or 3 more times after getting another wrong order..ANYWAY... we get our order...one apple pie and one taro pie. we looked at the receipt and found that she never rang us up for the second meal deal...just the quarter pounder.. which was almost as much as the meal deal...but then I questioned...how come she put 2 meal deals on the tray? I would normally bring this to the Manager but at this point, I felt this crew is totally inept...truly. not friendly... other things...the drive thru has 2 lanes...1 of those lanes is never open..ever... we went through the drive thru to get a few slushie drinks. I stopped by here to grab a McRib and Filet-O-Fish during my stay on Maui. The area is nice and safe. This area doesn't have a lot of restaurants since it is way out. This is the local McDonald's near our timeshare property......about 10 mintues up the road in Lahaina....stays open late....great customer service....very fast and efficient service...and the Banana Pies which are served for only a limited time each year here....are in a word.....DELICIOUS. Yeah ladies and gentlemen I am talking about a McDonald's......that's right McDonald's.....this is a great place to come late especially if your craving a good meal at a decent price. I can't finish this review without saying that the apple pies and banana pies are deep fried and flaky....unlike on the mainland where they are baked....and trust me there is a difference. I don't read reviews for places like McDonald's, but after reading them after my experience, most are an average of what I experienced. I got a large fry and apple pie: both were consistent with the quality that other McDonald's offer elsewhere: I went through the drive-through and there were 4 cars in front of me. I thought this would be a quick outing since where I was staying was less than a mile away, but it ended up taking over 30 minutes to get my food. From experience at fast food drive-throughs, usually it takes 10-15 minutes for about 4 cars plus myself, so it was about double the normal time. As you can see from other reviews, this place has slow and unorganized service, but the food is consistent with other McDonald's. So if you go, just be prepared to wait longer than normal. read more

For starters, its my own fault for going to McDonalds when there is so much great food in Maui, but regardless..... We asked the dude who was taking our order twice if there was a "super size" or size above the large order for French fries, and he just looked at us like we were crazy and never answered. I ordered nuggets, and they gave us a side of BBQ sauce so I went back and asked for sweet and sour sauce and he made me exchange the BBQ. My friend ordered a filet of fish sandwich and asked for extra tarter sauce - they charged her $1 for a small side of tarter and the pitiful little squirt of tarter sauce they considered "extra" that came on the sandwich. This review is for breakfast. This particular location does indeed have the spam plate, and was prepared quickly and tasted correct. It comes with rice and macaroni. There's also a Portuguese sausage option, which I didn't try. Other than that, it's a decent McDonalds. The Egg McMuffin tasted the same as at other McDonalds, the Sausage Egg McMuffin tasted the same as at other McDonalds. Pros: -They're open early (some of the local cafes don't open until 10am) -Good amount of indoor seating -Food was as consistent as all the other McDonalds I went too -clean -friendly staff Other: -It's a relatively cheap breakfast (for example, when compared to the $17 breakfast dish I ordered at Longhi's), but on the expensive side compared to other McDonalds (about a dollar more, example 5.40 - 6.50 for breakfast combos, instead of 4.40 - 5.50 at other locations). I usually love to stop at a McDonald's for a quick meal any time of day, but I will never be interested in traveling to this specific location again. My family and I were on vacation in Hawaii and we figured it might be fun to stop at a McDonald's there to see what was different about it compared to our local restaurants. When we walked in, there were about 20-30 people scattered throughout the restaurant. Many seemed to be waiting in line, and the others were waiting for their food to come after having ordered. There was no one with food. I repeat, not one person had received their food yet. Although we were now suspicious that the service at this location was not going to be the best, we got in line to order anyway. After having ordered, we sat down and waited. The rest of my family got their drinks rather quickly, but my drink took 20 MINUTES to arrive. I ordered a simple Iced Caramel Macchiato. Then, finally, after 30 total minutes, our food arrived. Not only is this a terrible amount of time to wait, especially from a restaurant that advertises itself as fast food, but they also gave my brother the wrong order. He ordered a quarter pounder with cheese, and he received some sort of bacon cheeseburger (he didn't like bacon very much.) When my mother went to pick up the food, the woman at the counter just looked over and grabbed a random sandwich off the counter instead of looking for my brother's quarter pounder with cheese. Aside from a simple and meaningless "sorry," there was absolutely no acknowledgement to the fact that this restaurant was so poorly organized.
