This is a very fancy and swanky McD's that has been certainly upgraded from what it was before - relatively high-tech and spacious with plenty of tables to sit at and kiosks to order from. Food is also great, service of course prompt, and they were also including Sonic 3 toys with their Happy Meals. Also for reviews on some of the other McDs nearby in SD, the Del Mar Highlands one gets customers take care of via the drive-thru 4-5x faster compared to other locations! That alone could be worth the visit or wait (or lack thereof)! read more

Having eaten snacks at the movies I needed a bite to eat for dinner. yay! this Mc Donald's in Del Mar had Mc Rib, my holiday go to meal. Placed carefully in its boxed container it was in good condition once we arrived "home." Tangy sauce with some slivers of onion and a ridged patty in an elongated bun, chomp just right for me. Upon entering there was a family in front of me...who seemed to be having issues with a promo....that took almost 10 minutes to figure out. As soon as I got to the register, the guy leaves and no one comes back to the register for almost 15 minutes....i really was about to leave, but didn't have time to try to find another McDonald's. I don't know if it was because of the place reopening, but they were unable use my drive thru code at the drive thru to redeem a free sandwich. It was a frustrating situation for me and the person taking my order, but they did stay patient and ask me to repeat it multiple times just to verify. Just when I thought they were going to rob me of my free mcChicken sandwich (my points were expiring soon), the manager who was at the next window confirmed that the system was being finicky and gave me a mcChicken sandwich free of charge after I showed her my points screen. I cannot properly explain how upsetting my experience at this McDonald's was. At 3 pm on a Tuesday afternoon I came to grab a quick bite during my short lunch break and the employees here genuinely spoiled my appetite with the service they provided. They had me waiting at the drive-thru for 7 minutes after receiving part of my order while FOUR cars drove past me. I was waiting for a DRINK ??? Don't go here. Not the worst spot, but not the best anymore. I ordered two spicy MCchickens and some fries. And asked specifically for a few packets of their sweet n sour sauce and paid extra. They didn't give me any...Huge disappointment there. They need to communicate better to the customers. Did they run out? Say so next time before a customer pays extra for them. The employees here are now totally incompetent and cannot handle anything. Tried to order breakfast this morning at the drive-thru but there were three cars in the left order lane and one car in the right lane. So, I went to the right lane thinking it would be faster. Took forever for them to take the order of the one car in front of me. I moved up and it again took forever with nothing going on and I finally said that I am ready to order. The lady then said to me, if you are ready then drive up to the window. I attempt to drive up to the first window and, of course, there are three cars in front of me all not moving. I then hear the same order lady take the order of the car that was waiting back at the menu kiosks in the other lane. I guess me saying that I am ready, means they just skip me? Fifteen years ago, I would have given this McDonald's 4-stars. It was a McCafé then, an experimental concept with a clubby dining room, gelato (which was pretty good), panini, and pasta dishes ... in addition to a regular McDonald's menu. It was the first place to serve the coffee drinks one sees in McDonald's today. Sadly, all that has been gone for a long time now, and this is just another tired McDonald's. This used to be a McCafé concept store that has been here for many many years. Recently, they literally razed the entire building to the ground and built a new one. That probably wasn't totally necessary as the last building was pretty nice, but I digress! The new McDonald's isn't anything particularly special, although it is new, bright, and airy inside. I encountered very friendly employees (4 star service) and the food is McDonald's! The nicest looking McDonald's I remember been in very very long time. It is really pretty design (the paintings, the chairs, the yellow and charcoal color palette...). It is extremely clean and service was courteous. It looks pretty new to me and if it is not, is definitively well preserved. Young crowd mixed with business people, interesting blend. Order came fast and hot but for some reason the flavor and built of my Big Mac sandwich was not as great as I remember from other locations, so that was kind of strange, but overall a great restaurant that does look a bit different and more upscale. read more

This McDonald's is located on the northern end of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center just off of Del Mar Heights Rd. I've been wanting to check this place out for quite some time. The interior was indeed fancier than your usual McDonald's. However, I came here early evening on a Friday. The place was packed with what appeared to be either grade school or high school kids. I guess it's a good place to hangout after school. The Ritz Carlton on McDonalds locations! This place is fancy. The furniture and decor are not what you'd expect at a McDonalds. The food is the same. Service is excellent and parking is easy - sorry no valet available. lol There are art pieces on display and fancy drapes on the windows. I've never seen pillars inside a McDonalds! Drive thru is usually efficient but has long lines during peak hours. There's also a children's play center outside. They did aways with the $1.69 Fish o Filet Fridays. BUT, you can now order a discounted FoF with the 2 for $5 here ! I think there are four items you can choose from. I stopped by for a quick lunch and ordered fish filet and 10 piece nuggets. The cashier was friendly and super quick. My food came out promptly and she even added two iced waters on the tray for me when I quicked requested it last min. I've had the FoF from this location and it's been decent or it's sucked. This time it was alright (esp with extra tartar sauce - don't judge). The chicken nuggets tasted freshly fried which makes a world of difference. It was a 'hit the spot' meal for me. And for only $5 bucks. Well, $5.39 after tax. This location is nice and clean. Staff is friendly but the downside is they push customer's to use the kiosk. It's difficult for the elderly and other customer's to navigate, they suppose to open one registers for cash payment. Not all people used cards to pay. I understand some places now are cutting the costs. However, the kiosk is inconvenient for some costumers. read more

Wish I could give it one star. I don't say that much but the service here sucked. It was fine when I ordered my food and got it but what happened after turned around the whole experience for me. Their ketchup dispenser exploded all over my hand and got on my dress. When I told the employee at the register he just stared at me like I wasn't making any sense. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt but I showed him my ketchup covered hand and he still didn't say anything- didn't apologize or offer something for my inconvenience. The decor is quite nice and relaxing and they actually give you a number so they bring your food to you. The employees at this location were also a bit more pleasant than some that I go to. Why people feel the need to compare McDonald's do anything is beyond me. It's McDonald's! But if you want to compare this McDonald's to other McDonald's, without a doubt this particular store ranks up in the top! I've lived in this area for quite sometime and have been coming here since I moved here. They are consistently pretty busy, but despite the mad rushes in the morning, afternoon and evening, they manage to handle the crowds and get your order quick, fresh and correct. I actually frequent this McDonald's on just about a daily basis and anyone who knows me, knows I'm not exaggerating when I say that. And before you judge, 98% of the time, I am here to order an iced tea. Before you laugh, I live off iced tea (unsweetened) and McDonald's brews theirs fresh with a particular brand (Farmer Brothers) which I find very good. Furthermore, you can't beat the price and convenience! I can drive thru, pick up a couple large for less than what I would spend at Starbucks for one and the Starbucks doesn't have a drive thru. And it's fresh every time I go. As for the rest of the menu, well, if you haven't tried their french fries or a burger I would guess that you come from another planet. While I don't subscribe to a daily diet of McDonald's, they do serve quite a bit that much to some people's surprise, is actually quite fine for the diet. I'm a breakfast person and the Egg White Delight (260 calories) is delicious and quite filling. Again, I don't someone should eat here every day, but for the price, you can't deny the great taste from their burgers and nobody makes fries better than McDonald's. And throughout the years, the Filet-O-Fish sandwich has never changed and continues to be a great sandwich. Love them or not, the food at McDonald's has maintained their consistency for the 45+ plus years I've been going and from any location throughout the U.S. and around the world. But compared to other McDonald's, this is one of the best from their cleanliness to the courteous people who work behind the counter. They always have a friendly greeting and do everything to make your experience pleasant, even in the drive thru. They work incredibly hard here to handle the rush crowds. Sometimes cars are lined up 10 or more cars but be assured, it will move quickly. If you are ever in the area and craving McDonald's (we all have that craving once in awhile) give this store a try and you'll enjoy the service as much as you enjoy the food. read more
