McEwans is a staple of downtown Memphis. Great food (try the Osso Buco) and ambiance. Would recommend for a night out in downtown!

We enjoyed our meal with friends. The restaurant itself was pleasant and the redfish, tenderloin and ribeye were all good. However the chefs vegan surprise, was surprising as no aspect of it was good. The wait staff were polite and friendly. The valets were completely absent when we arrived, so we got to struggle for a spot. Wine and drink were all just fine. It's a decent place to spend time with friends and family. Had a date night here and was very impressed. It feels and looks like a solid steakhouse should (complete with a cool skylight type area. We had cocktails and wine, along with both steak and mashed potatoes as well as chicken pasta. We also tried a couple of desserts. Everything was delicious and worth every penny. This a cute establishment in the heart of downtown Memphis. I booked this restaurant for a group of friends visiting. The staff was very professional and was able to accommodate our party. I'm so upset I didn't take a picture of the Fried Green Tomatoes. OMG! They were amazing. Literally AMAZING! That was my favorite thing from here. I'm sure you are wondering why did I give them 3 stars. Let's get into it. I ordered the sweet potato crusted catfish. It was a little disappointing. For some reason I was expecting a real crust. It was shredded sweet potatoes stuck to the fish. I'm a crispy fish lover with a good crust. Nothing about this gave me crust. It was under seasoned. My macaroni was very bland and not cheesy at all. The collards were the best thing on the plate. One of my friends is vegan and he wanted the vegetable plate. I'm a big believer in being consistent and that is not the case with the vegetable plate. The waiter said with the vegetable plate you never know what you will get and that all the vegetable plates come out different. A table near us ordered the vegetable plate and it had rice and some other things. When my friend asked for rice on his vegetable plate, the waiter said I can't guarantee you that because the chef chooses what he wants to put on the plate. For this to be an upscale restaurant that is very ghetto. The vegetable plate needs to be consistent. I think that is a lazy excuse and way to treat customers. I don't think I will return here just because everyone's food lacked flavor. I enjoyed my drinks and fellowship none the less. read more

We wanted something other than barbeque for our last lunch in Memphis, so we had two choices: * Have lunch downtown and get to the airport later than we'd like * Go right to the airport and have "lunch" there A quick check of Yelp, and our course was clear: have lunch at McEwen's. It was a great decision. I mentioned that we were in a bit of a hurry when the manager seated us; our server arrived a minute later (almost before we had time to read the menu!). Both of us had the seared yellowtail tuna; my wife had it on the Jungle of Greens salad, and I had it as an entrée with chipotle sweet potatoes and sautéed vegetables. Both meals were excellent; I should have asked for some recipes! Our server was sensitive to our schedule and made sure we didn't have to wait for her when it was time to pay. Oh my! The rib-eye is melt-in-your-mouth tender, cooked to perfection, with the most amazing seasoning! Wine prices reasonable for a restaurant with a good selection as well. My husband had the pork Oso Bucco. It was fall-off the bone moist and savory. Thomas and Mary, our waitstaff , made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. My 16 year old son wanted to take his parents out for dinner, so HE chose this restaurant and made reservations for us. :) I've recognized this name for years, but never got around to visiting this restaurant so I was thankful when I found out that he made reservations at a restaurant that neither of us had been to. We took advantage of the valet parking and were seated immediately upon arrival. The restaurant was split into different sections. We were seated in the area to the right upon entering. I loved the ambience and the lighting was just right. On my way to the restroom, I noticed that there was a nice bar area in the restaurant as well. (Restroom were clean, by the way!) Our server came over right away once we were seated. I tried a pomegranate martini and it was refreshing. I ordered a Caesar Salad and for the entrée decided to go with the Sweet Potato Crusted Catfish. It came with mac and cheese and greens..OMG!! It was absolutely wonderful! I actually took my time with this dish because I wanted it to last beyond the typical 10 minutes. lol My husband and son both ordered the salmon and they loved it. The portion sizes weren't huge, but just the right amount. The flavor was just out of this world. I sampled the salmon and the flavor was simply oustanding. We were all left with happy plates. We arrived and were quickly seated as our reservation had a table waiting on us. The greeter was nice and our waiter was wonderful. The waiter knew the menu top to bottom, made recommendations for food and wine pairings for most of our party, and new the bourbon list. The inside had a cool vibe and was nicely decorated. The chairs were surprisingly comfortable and the noise level was good. My steak was good. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The mushrooms and sauce were really good and paired nicely with the seasoning on the steak. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed their crispness. Granted, we split the checks, but instead of getting clarification on what items go on whose tab, he split it amongst all of us. (Never seen that done before). He also seemed frustrated at times. I wouldn't come back. The food was not made consistent either. We ordered 2 Caesar salads and only one salad had enough dressing, the risotto was bland, and we asked for more biscuits but we were informed they ran out. Beautiful interior, great ambiance (nice and quiet), exceptional service. I wish I could give this locale 5 stars but the food just didn't quite make it to 5. Here's what we had: Steak, halibut, salmon, chicken, Brussel sprouts, baked Brie, biscuits, and dessert. Of all the plates, everyone liked the steak the most but the accompanying potatoes were overly salted. The salmon would have been delicious but the risotto it topped was way too salty (this detail alone killed the whole experience) .. I feel like if anyone at the back of house sampled the risotto before serving they would have caught this detail. The halibut was good. Chicken was basic. Cocktails were perfection and the bread pudding was phenomenal. Brussel sprouts? Too much salt. Maybe if it was 1 plate or a fluke, I could overlook the sodium but for everything a $300 meal needs? Not ruining the palette of your guest is important. It clearly wasn't a one-off ... it was an important detail in the quality of the meal that missed the mark in several plates and overflowed to others. read more

The tortillas weren't toasted or anything. I've had better. The potato salad is amazing. I think they should upgrade their food a little bit. The food was OK for one reason. The streak the I recieved was cooked very well and to the correct temp. The problem was that steak was poorly trimmed a lot of sinew was left that make for an unpleasant experience.
