What a lovely way to spend the lunch hour. This lovely little restaurant is tucked away on Monroe Avenue in Memphis Tennessee. It is neat and clean and the servers were very pleasant and greeted and seated me quickly. When my lunch companion joined me they were quick to provide information regarding the specials of the day and popular items on the menu. They kept my glasses refilled and served lunch promptly and the food was outstanding. I enjoyed the grilled salmon with maple and pecans with a Caesar salad. Boy was that a good Caesar salad! Just the right amount of dressing. The grilled salmon was not overcooked... much to my surprise. It was perfect! It was topped with fresh maple syrup and pecans. I was pleased that the salmon was not soaked in syrup much to my relief. It was a simple meal that was simply delicious. If you are ever in downtown Memphis you should check it out. read more

I went here with a large group of coworkers for dinner last week. My overall sentiment was that the seasoning on the food is way off and with a few tweaks this could be so much better. The cocktails as a whole were outstanding (the blackberry and peach ones at the bottom of the menu were my favorites- just order them slightly less sweet). The espresso martini was not my favorite- the lemon was a weird add and it didn't have any of the creaminess I'm used to in espresso martinis. Regarding food, we tried a whole bunch of stuff. The cheese board was nice. The warm mushroom salad was good and really fresh. The oysters were quite good. The fried green tomatoes looked gorgeous and were cooked perfectly but were completely under-seasoned. The sea bass I had for my entree was well cooked but nowhere near as flavorful as the description described, it was really just salty. The folks near me who tried the catfish were also not very unimpressed. Service was on the whole really good. This restaurant is so close on so many fronts to being truly excellent but didn't quite hit the mark for me this time. read more

I went for dinner on a Tuesday after traveling to Memphis for a conference. It was close to my hotel so it was an easy choice. There was a wait when I got there so I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender was nice. She was pretty busy and it seemed like she had a good crowd of regulars. I started with the Goat cheese salad. It was arugula, and goat cheese topped with crumbled pretzels and bitter vinaigrette. It was pretty good. I think I got the bottom of pretzel crumbles because there was quite a bit of salt but it was still good. I also got the Shrimp and grits. I didn't think they were anything special. The grits we pretty firm and a little on the cold side. The Vegan lentil soup was on special. It was my favorite of the three. It had a good pepper flavor to go along with the veggies. read more

The ambiance was lovely: low noise level and table separate enough to enjoy privacy. The building is interesting with unique features. Service (waitress Carla) impeccable. We started with salads (wedge and house -both excellent!). Our entrees were drastically different. I had the special (mahi mahi with poblano rice and broccolini) - well-presented, delicious and light! My husband had the seafood orecchiette pasta: probably the worst seafood pasta we have had: no seafood in it, just some minced fish (salmon and redfish) in a bland tomato sauce. Graciously, they took it off our bill. The wine list was adequate, not extensive but ok. All in all, worth returning but we will ask more questions about the menu items next time! read more

I stopped into McEwen's as a solo diner in town for business. I sat at the bar and the restaurant was pretty packed so I recommend a reservation. Their menu is minimal but has enough options to choose from. For dinner, I ordered the warm goat cheese salad, the lobster risotto, and then a chocolate chess pie. My dinner was accompanied by wine recommended by the excellent bartender, Bates! As for the food, the salad needed an element of crunch. Theoretically, the goat cheese was encrusted with pecans but still was super soft with the addition of the soft grilled pears. Moving onto the lobster risotto, it was nothing to write home about and was just okay. They have a pastry chef on site so I was really hoping the dessert would blow my socks off. The merengue was crunchy because the sugar was not fully incorporated. It tasted grainy and I ended up taking the majority of it home to throw it out. read more

Nice place in downtown Memphis. The menu looked really intriguing, so I wanted to check them out. I ordered the goat cheese salad and sliders. The portions were quite a bit smaller than expected. The food flavor was great, but a bit overpriced for the portion size. The salad was small with two very small pieces of pear. The sliders were normal size, but tiny portions of meat. Service was pretty good. Parking is on the street, so not convenient. Overall wouldn't recommend, but may be worth a second chance. read more

As someone who travels for business, I tend to sit at the bar to eat and relax. I always seem to meet fellow travelers there. What make this place so cool is old school bartenders. Not a good looking young lady who is a "beertender" and eye candy, but honest to goodness professional bartenders. (Yes, good looking young ladies CAN be real bartenders) The type who has a craft. Who knows their trade. Who can keep conversation up while preparing real cocktails. Who can joke with customers. They know the menu. They know food. It's rare these days and getting more rare it seems. Had a fantastic halibut tonite. McEwans never disappoints. Trust me on this. Its old school, but modern at the same time. I stopped here the other day for lunch when I was on jury duty. Sat at the bar and had the Cobb salad. Service was good, nice atmosphere. The Cobb salad was just ordinary though-the dressing didn't have a ton of flavor and it just seemed to need more "stuff" in it. Seared tuna was cooked perfect, crispy crust with tender and creamy middle. Crab cakes were standard. Entree----- My friend spoke highly of the Chilean sea bass. I also liked my red snapper special. We had a reservation; at first Parks was funny and engaging with me (I am 65) about my choice of beverage and he made an excellent cocktail (that's why we stayed at the bar, big mistake ); then it seemed the conversation turned on me and I wasn't listening to his advice and if I disagreed with him he made me feel very disrespected. He is a good bartender but his banter needs improvement. We spent well over $150, so, I really don't want to feel disrespected or belittled. We questioned the bill.
