There are two things that set McGurk's apart from the other Irish Pubs in town. 1. The beautiful outdoor patio area. 2. The live music which usually features musicians from Ireland. As one of the most popular bars in the Soulard area, this place can get packed at peak times. I try to avoid the busy weekend crowds, but enjoy the more laid back weeknights. McGurks also offers a full menu, and most of the food I've tried has been good. I recommend finishing with an Irish coffee at the front bar while enjoying the live music! read more

RUDE SERVER !! Never have I been treated so poorly as I was by the server McGurks yesterday. We got there late afternoon and it had been raining. The patio was pretty dead. We asked the bartender if we could sit at this table by the koi pond. And if we should order from the bar or if we would have a server. The bartender went and checked with the hostess and came back and told us we were fine to sit there and order from the bar. Over an HOUR later a blonde waitress came up to our table and told us that we had to move because we weren't ordering food or drinks from her and she had a table that was going to sit there. She had never once came up to us before then to offer any service. I told her that we would order from her we just didn't know we had a server. Underrated pub with great service, beer, and BREAD PUDDING! We ordered the Whiskey Bread Pudding with ice cream per the bartender's suggestion. He gave us a heads up it'd take at least 20 minutes to make but we were in the hurry. Irish musicians entertained us while we drank and waited. They were a duo playing beautiful Irish jigs on flute and guitar. My husband dropped them a tip and requested an Irish tune called Swallowtail. They did a fantastic job and successfully lifted our spirits. Our bread pudding arrived and we were NOT disappointed. In fact, it was the best bread pudding we've ever had. The warm, slightly crusty dessert alongside the cold ice cream plus the tartness from the raspberry sauce was a match made in Heaven. I ate it too quick to get a picture. I called this morning to make reservations for 13 for this evening. The person who answered indicated they could not make same day reservations and she had to get me to the manager. I left a vm and then called back in 2 hours and spoke with the manager. She was able to make the reservation for me and I didn't have to specify if I wanted indoor or outdoor. We ordered the stuffed chicken, spinach artichoke dip, spinach artichoke dip ravioli, and the beef medallions. Our food was so good and the patio is amazing. First visit.. Was looking for some good fish and chips. Appetizer was pretzel with cheese, not great. It resembles nuggets of fried dough with a sprinkle of coarse salt, I wasn't sure it was a pretzel. It came with small plastic cup of cheese sauce that was okay. Bdubs has nice pretzel nuggets with beer cheese sauce, I would've rather skipped what we we brought. The fish resembled three small pieces that reminded me of stuffed spring rolls fried. I'm used to large filet fried in killer batter, but the batter was almost tasteless. It was okay, but not something I would return for. The homemade chips were very good, and the Reuben sandwich was excellent. The service was okay, the server was dedicated to a party table, so I don't feel we got a good experience with that. We don't snub her on the tip because she did do the minimal. I would definitely recommend a good sandwich and the crazy good chips, just not the fish and definitely not the pretzel bites. I wasn't going to return the fish because I was trying it. Should've returned the pretzel bites. Good atmosphere, great Reuben sandwich. Stopped in for a business lunch on a Friday and was first customer through the door at 11:30am. I had a pint of Guinness in my hands three minutes later. And then a tantalizing tasty appetizer of bacon wrapped shrimp that was delicious. After I finished my pint and shrimp I polished off a black and tan and called it lunch. Fantastic food. Although we were on a bus trip and probably about 45 people, it took over 1-1/2 hours to bring lunch which was a pre-set menu of 4 different sandwiches! McGurks is always a good gathering spot esp the outside patio. This most recent visit though we were in a side room for a small birthday party. Our waitress was excellent. I have never been to Ireland, but when I entered McGurk's it was exactly what I would imagine a true Irish pub would look like. The pub is dark with great artwork that went along beautifully with the interior. My wife and I was really curious about the space and went exploring. The place is ENORMOUS. We counted 3 bars indoors, but wait.... we also counted 3 bars outdoors. (Later my friend corrected me and told me there were 4 bars indoors, I haven't confirmed yet though) Since it was cold and rainy, my wife and I sat inside, but that didn't stop us from exploring the patio area. The patio area was HUGE, I think it might be bigger than the inside. I think it's the biggest and most impressive pub patio I have ever seen. I had the Reuben for dinner, but I feel like the appetizers were what I enjoyed most about the meal. One of the ISC attendees was kind enough to buy the table appetizers to share. Here is what we had: Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip - I felt like the dip itself was pretty good, but I thought the fried pita bread was the star of this dish. The pita bread was so good, I actually ended up eating it without the dip. Spinach and Artichoke Ravioli - Pretty good t-ravs. I really don't remember too much about this dish. I think the next appetizer I'm going to mention is what really caught my eye... or taste buds. House Made Pretzels - I thought I was going to like the toasted raviolis best out of the three, but this was the dish that really shined. The pretzels were nice and soft, and that cheese dipping sauce... WOW. Put that on anything, and I'll eat it, even broccoli. What a great place for drinks/lunch/anything ! Its a lot bigger than I thought , plenty booths , tables, 2-3 bars, beautiful outdoor seating with fountain & fish pond. Such a cool place. I started with the spinach dip with pita( ooh my yum) The Cajun chicken sandwich so cheesy and good. Just a tad too spicy for me tho. The chicken strips were huge and fresh! I don't think there has been a place that I have been for lunch recently where I said "wow, I really want to go back there." John D McGurk's Irish Pub fell into that category. Four of us for lunch and the place was packed but it is also huge so we had no problem getting a seat. I noticed that they also have outdoor seating but the winter is here. Our waitress took our drink orders and we perused the menu. Two of us decided on the Grilled Three Cheese sandwich, B chose the hamburger and M got the Irish Stew. We chose crisps (potato chips) for our sides. The three cheeses on the grilled cheese were Monterey Jack, goat cheese and cheddar. It also had tomatoes and onions on it. I chose not to get the onions on it and I think that was a mistake. The cheese and tomato by itself was very bland. B said his hamburger was good and cooked the way he ordered. M said the Irish Stew was good, but nothing to write home about. Only one drawback and that was waiting for refills for our drinks. They do have a more extensive menu for dinner. They also have their own parking lot around the corner. Would I come back here? I could but it probably wouldn't be my first choice. read more

Always love sitting on the patio or outside bar, such a little oasis. This visit was at the outside bar for lunch for three of us. Beautiful day out and everyone seemed happy to be out to enjoy a Friday afternoon. Our bartender was awesome as was lunch. Drove in from KC to see a favorite band Jig Jam who was in house at McGurks. Never had been there but was in town for a fun girls weekend, and the staff, drinks, food and entertainment did not disappoint. My daughter lived in Ireland and the highly energetic crowd took her right back to her favorite pub! We were seated right next to the stage warm and cozy! The drinks were cold and the music was hot! It was also World Cup, and by all signs of the commitment to soccer I'm sure will be seeing more of McGurks during the upcoming KC/STL matches. Stopped by here after a loooong day touring houses in Lafayette Square. I was afraid the restaurants in the square area would be just too busy, so asked a friend who lives in Soulard where we should go and she took us here. Absolutely wonderful outside areas! The service was friendly and top notch. I had a bowl of Mrs. McAteer's Potato Soup (NOT just potatoes in this one!!!) and Galway Bay Crab Cakes (crazy different toppings on these!). Both were absolutely delicious. Had to make myself stop eating, so's I could take some home to hubby. I really appreciated that they offered a cider, as not EVERYONE is a beer drinker (that'd be ME!). My friends all raved about their orders too (Turkey Club, Tilapia Sandwich, and Southwestern Salad). What can be said about McGurk's that hasn't been said before?!?! I mean I like this place. This was actually the first Irish Bar I visited when I moved to STL last year! I remember enjoying the people the atmosphere and most importantly, I remember enjoying the beer! I recently went to grab a bite to eat and grab a few beers with my friend! We had great service and of course the food was delicious! I always go and think I want to order the wings, but then I never do! They smell so good, but I always end up ordering something safe....maybe next time. I enjoy the live music and I love the bartenders! Thank you for making ME feel special when I am at the bar! I would hate to call this place bad as I absolutely love it. A simple Irish menu with very tasty food. The prices are a bit expensive but that's no fault of theirs. The only problem I had was we came in on a Wednesday night with a party of 10... and the server was pretty terrible. We were drinking waters and Pepsi's only and yet only were refilled once. To make things fair, we were offered a second refill after we had finished our food. Now, this wouldn't have been an issue if we hadn't been sitting next to the bar station outside where we could visibly see her pulling out her phone to text people while disregarding providing decent service. As someone who's a server, I understand things get busy but laziness in service seems to be a common trend lately. It's a shame because the food was AMAZING. On top of this, we figured out that the reason she couldn't care less about providing decent service is because an 18% gratuity was added. Again, I completely understand being in the city and needing to protect your servers' profits. However, she dropped the check off after horrible service and says "there is an 18% gratuity charge added already to the bill but most people tip more than that". After the terrible service where she knew the 18% tip was secure, she has the guts to ask for even more? As a server, this is the most disrespectful thing I can do to my tables. It was my sister's birthday, so obviously that added to our frustration, looking for a wonderful night out. This is purely a mark on the service staff. The food came warm, delicious, and fairly priced with how most restaurants charge now. That's why I can't provide a 1 star review because the food and atmosphere was genuinely good. read more

Great ambiance and excellent music that would appeal to many different age groups. They have a lovely, large patio area and multiple areas inside too. Very pleasant place to spend an evening. I think it would make a great date place too. The booths seem kind of private and the seating isn't so close as to be cramped so it lends itself easily to conversation. Beer and appetizer selections are good. The appetizers were good, but nothing outstanding. We didn't eat dinner, just appetizers and drinks. I've been here twice and certainly look forward to visiting next time I am in town and would highly recommend it. read more

I am very disappointed in this establishment. I am a frequent customer of McGurk's (or should I say FORMER customer). The service is usually halfway decent and the food is the same. However, I was meeting some friends at 7:45 for dinner here as I have many times before, and I was met with SEVERAL unacceptable obstacles (they arrived a few minutes before me and were able to get in with no issues). First of all, there was a line down the block (at 7:45 on a Wednesday??). After waiting in this line for over 15 minutes in the freezing cold and rain, I finally made it to the front. Only then did I see a sign announcing a $20 cover CASH ONLY! I am capable of paying this, although I really disagree with charging $20 cash only at 7:45 PM on a Wednesday evening. However, my willingness to pay meant nothing, because there was no ATM available... who carry's around cash in St. Louis?? After trying to explain the situation to the bouncer, I was rudely interrupted and told I was not getting in. To top it all off and put a cherry on top, the bouncer sprinkled in a SLUR! Unacceptable under any circumstances in my opinion, and I do not appreciate being called a f****t. Thankfully Tucker's Place is right around the corner, the staff members don't have a stick where the sun doesn't shine, the prices are lower AND there's better food! When I walked through the old wooden and glass door, memories so sweet drifted from my soul and caused my heart to skitter about; I smile. McGurk's will always have a little hold on me. I've been coming here for a very long time; but it's been awhile. I was grateful to see that nothing much had changed. The old brick walls and wooden tables so worn and bare in places were familiar, comforting like your favorite faded sweatshirt. The lovely Irish music surrounded me and carried me in, my step a bit lighter. This Pub is one of my happy places and it felt good to be back. A must from the menu; their famous potato soup. It is filled with big chunks of potatoes and carrots that make this soup, thick, luscious and authentic. If the time is right, I think a Guinness would be called for! The food is always good, the service wonderful, but it's the atmosphere that I adore. Suddenly, you are in Ireland sitting in a little Irish Pub...sounds good to me! Thank you John D.
