On June 30, a McClay technician quoted me $1,200 for a clean out. I asked what it would cost to do the clean out plus install a water softening system (if I purchased one from Home Depot), and he quoted $2,400 for both. After scoping my line, he said the clean out wasn't necessary and could install the water system for $1,200-$1,400. That honesty made me want to work with McClay, so I purchased the system and sent the details to both the technician and his supervisor. When the technician returned to plan the job, he spent about an hour walking me through the tie-in points and confirmed the original price range. He said he would write up the quote. That's when things changed. After calling his supervisor, the same job was now quoted at $4,500. I contacted the office three times before the supervisor, Chad, called back about a week and a half later. He explained that it was a two-man job at $175/hour and that materials plus markup were around $1,000. My own research shows the main materials cost closer to $230. He also compared it to a $5,000 job they did for another customer that required breaking concrete, digging trenches, and other extensive work -- none of which applies to my home. My house has a crawl space, the underside is spacious, and I was hiring my own electrician for the electrical portion. After two more weeks of trying, I reached the owner, Archie. He stood by his team's pricing. While I respect a company's right to set its rates, the difference between the initial and final quotes in my case was significant, and it came only after we had agreed to proceed. While McClay may deliver quality work, my advice is to get multiple quotes and confirm the final price before committing. read more

I paid close to $200.00 for a plumber to come out as it looked as if my new washer was leaking. I had moisture on the floor in front of of my dryer. 1st visit, from plummer, couldn't find anything wrong. Turned on my washer and then dryer after he left and again moisture. Called for him to return. He then discovered the dryer vent was off. He taped the vent together and apparently to the wall. About a week later I washed again and had the same problem. My son came over and found that the moisture and the dryer heat had released the silver tape and the plastic hose was again laying on the floor. Poor job from this Plummer. My son is not a Plummer, but he has done a wonderful job of fixing this for me and it didn't cost a thing. read more

Be aware they charge $175 just to come to your home to diagnose your problem, when other companies charge $65-$85, but if they feel like it McLay will waive or apply that to the cost of their overpriced service. I had a loud furnace that stopped working just as we were getting into the cold season. Our draft inducer was making a loud noise so I called McLay and they came and told me I need a new draft inducer and charged me $175, their service fee which no one from McLay inform me about. The service guy didn't know how much a new one would cost or how much it would cost to install a new one. That just did not sit right with me. After a few weeks of back and forth calls, McLay got back to me with a quote of $850+ but after a few calls they agreed to waive the $175, bringing down the total to approx $675. I asked for a breakdown for the cost of the part and labor but that caused more back and forth. McLay gave me a handful of excuses why they don't provide invoices or breakdowns of what they charge and why they charge more... Fed up with McLay's nonsense and bc I didn't want my two toddlers to suffer the cold any longer especially during the holidays, I ordered the part myself for $200 with free shipping (McLay told me their guy had to go pick up the part. One of their reasons to inflate their costs). I then YouTubed how to do it myself. I unscrewed a few screws and hooked it together myself bc it required very little skill since the replacement part was basically plug and play, which took maybe 10 minutes. My furnace works wonderfully again for $200. Two stars because McLay gave me back $100 that I asked for. I should have asked for the full $175 but I'm not a crook. So basically I paid $75 for their service guy to come to my house to tell me what I already knew. If I didn't feel like I was getting sandbagged by McLay, I probably would have paid $675. Our family has been using McLay Services for almost ten years and they have always been wonderful! The McLay Services family invests in staff who genuinely care about their craft. When our water heater had issues back in winter 2014 we tried a few different companies. Some of them tried to scare us into buying a new unit. When we called McLay, the receptionist Nellie was very accommodating and managed to squeeze us in the next day. Chad the senior technician was affable and professional. He quickly identified the problem just needed thorough draining and cleaning. He also gave us instructions on how to maintain our heater optimally. All we paid was labor instead of thousands for a replacement to a perfectly good unit. That same heater is still working to this day. Since then Chad has fixed faulty valves in our drainage pipes, leaks from our laundry room, replaced our sink and faucet pipes, and many issues throughout the years. Every time he arrives punctually, always maintaining his affable and professional nature, explains what each work involves with transparency and clarity, and shared helpful advice on maintaining optimal conditions before leaving. Yesterday we just had our HVAC unit fixed through McLay as well. Their HVAC technician Josh is a very knowledgeable young gentleman. He quickly narrowed down the problem down to wiring issues in the thermostat, which resulted in a blown fuse in our HVAC circuit board. A new thermostat and a replacement fuse later, our AC was humming that sweet cool air again. Throughout the fix Josh has been very patient and diligent, explaining what each component does with clarity and giving tips on proper maintenance. My wife and I are State Farm Agents in Baldwin Park, CA. Our office AC went out so we called a customer that had retired from AC Service. He recommended McClay for our AC problem. The service person for the initial appointment was not able to solve our problem so he called the owner Archie. Archie came out within a couple of hours and went to work diagnosing our problem. After doing a lot of work Archie determined that the problem was not the AC Unit but a fuse may have been failing in our main electrical panel. Archie called an electrician, they both returned the next morning and got our AC up and running. I am grateful for Archie. Caesar came out and snaked our laundry drain. He didn't get it with the first tool so went back and got a different one. After about 10 minutes he was able to clear the blockage and our drains are draining. Caesar even cleaned up after himself before he left and made sure there was no black sewage residue. We had McLay Services come to look at and work on a project that seemed to leave anybody that looked at it speechless. We had a root crushing the sewer line from the house to the city line. It wasn't a regular root intrusion issue, but the root was running alongside the sewer line. It was raining cats and dogs the day that I called, but they still came out to look at the situation that was in our backyard. Chad gave me a quote that was significantly less than the plumbing contractor that came days before. They were also upfront about their schedule and that it would be about a week before they could put me on the schedule. After the initial visit, i was able to schedule everything and complete the appropriate paperwork with their front office. On repair day, their techs came on time, were very professional, and began their work. Chad originally thought it might be a two day job, but they were able to complete the job in one day. They had to clear some misc lines to get to the problem, but they replaced what they cleared. I didn't originally call McLay. The issue sprung up and I tried to contact a few plumbers via Yelp. A well-reviewed plumbing company responded to my initial asks for quotes from yelp and came out. As this first company began to assess the issue, they quoted me an amount that just seemed an exorbitant amount. At that point is when I decided to get a 2nd opinion and that's where McLay came in. I'm very disappointed in the lack of service. They did work for me last year and the exact problem is back. I called them and they told me that someone would come the next day. No one showed up. I never got a call or anything. I called back and Nellie was very rude and dismissive and told me Chad would call me. It's been over a week and I haven't received a call. The saddest part of this ordeal is that we have over a 30 year history. They repiped my home and installed new vents. And now, not even the courtesy of a return phone call. Very bad service!! I scheduled a McLay Services technician visit for my very expensive Carrier Infinity system. My unit was throwing error codes, one of which was "Clean or replace your air filter" which I had done a few months earlier and the code would not clear. So, naturally I reached out to Carrier and they referred me to a few local Authorized Carrier experts. McLay was on the list. After spending time checking my system and my thermostat, the technician told me, "the next time you replace your filter replace it with a less efficient filter and replace it more frequently". He also recommended I replace my thermostat. Today McLay replaced my stat and everything seems to be running much better The tech was helpful and polite and walked me through the setup of my new, smart thermostat. A little backstory - a week ago, another HVAC company had come out as the AC would not turn on, and after many long hours, the tech got it working. However, after he left the airflow was minimal and the thermostat wouldn't go below 77. Josh from McLay came out today and was amazing.
