Worst service I've ever experienced! I brought my 1965 VW bug here recommended by a friend. I was looking for a go to shop to get things fixed. Wasn't asking for a deal just a good shop with great mechanics and service I could trust. Brought my Vw in to get the carburetors rebuilt, I was told it would take about 3-5 days. I asked to let me know what the cost would be before the process was started and Dave agreed. My car was there from October 5th till February 5th. He replaced things that were brand new, lost parts for my carburetors, left my car in the rain with the windows down then tried to charge me his mistakes and storage. Once I got my car back it ran like junk. I found a shop right next door that specializes in Vw's. I wouldn't recommend this shop to my worst enemy. When I pulled the money out of my pocket he snatched it out of my hands. I acted like an adult and just parted ways. Bring your VW to Max performance and save your time and money. read more

Last year I took my two cars to him after going to a regular mechanic shop in Costa Mesa and a BMW shop as well, on both places I felt i was being take advantage of because I'm a woman and it felt terrible, scary not having someone you can trust. Recently I was in a car accident and my car was taken to FixAuto in Costa Mesa, they did a good job on the body but the mechanic part was horrible!! Purchased a car from Dave at his auto shop for my daughter. I am a single Dad with 4 kids, so 6K was a lot for me. The test drive was fine. The next day, I took the car to work, and it began tapping, and the check engine light came on. Dave committed to fixing the car at his expense. Dave recently committed to replacing the car with either a PT cruiser or returning my 6K. Many commitments were made to take care of us, and I believed Dave and took his word for it. Turns out Dave is a liar and a cheat. He waited till I had surgery and was on my back recovering to drop the car off at my apartment complex. Dave never said he was selling his business either. He did all this so he could skip out on his commitments. We will be taking Dave to court. 6k for a car with a used engine, not new and advertised, as it runs perfectly but doesn't run right at all, is false advertising and stealing. Wish I would have seen the other review talking about getting ripped off. I forgot to mention he sold it to me calling himself Mike. I should have realized he's a fraudulent person. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would! My catalytic converter was stolen sept '22 and Toyota did little to help me navigate the situation. For 8 MONTHS Dave not only held my car at his shop but was very responsive to the back and forth updates I had about parts and I truly feel without his help and involvement with Toyota I would still be without a car. Before they explained the situation and damages to my suspension and advised me to replace This time they decided to charge me double to replace the same suspension, saying it was had another leaked yet it was brand new. I had my radiator replaced here a few days ago. But, when I got home, following was found: 2 bolts of radiator sub-frame were missing - not reinstalled. 1 rib of right cooler fan cover was broken. Several clips/fasteners holding the top radiator cover were broken. Apparently, whoever reinstalled it did not put back the original (brand new) clips in place. I am sorry but for above reasons I probably will not use this establishment again in the future. read more

I am happy to be the first to write a review but a little surprised that other McLean Automotive customers have not raved about this shop and it's owner Dave McLean before me. I met Dave when he was working at the HB Jeep Dealership in 1994 and bought in my Cherokee. He did great work on that SUV and when it was time to buy a new car I bought a second Jeep just to keep him as my mechanic. As I came to learn, Dave can fix almost any car or truck, not to mention airplane or golfcart. He's incredibly talented and most likely the nicest person you could ever meet. I always joke that my relationship with Dave is the longest I've ever had with any man. That's how long I've been having him work on my cars. He has rescued me from so many car emergencies, like when I was on my way to a job interview and my car broke down in the middle of the street and he came to where I was and gave me his truck to get to the interview. He stayed with my broken car until the tow truck arrived, took it to his shop and repaired it by the time I returned from my interview. And that is only ONE of the over-the-top customer service he has provided me with over the years! His integrity is beyond reproach, he's honest, always looking out for your best interests and will always keep you from making unnecessary car repairs and saving a little money. Okay so I have a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. I took it to Toyota to have a maintenance a couple months ago. The mechanic at Toyota told me that my rotors were shot and I'd need to get new ones and that it would run be about $600-$650. And also that I had about only 2,000 miles left until I had to do that. Anyways, I thought I would get it checked out so I called McLain auto yesterday and talked to a really nice guy he told me I could bring my truck in and that he would take a look at it. They called me back an hour later saying they test drove it and put it up in the air to look at it and THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. They said my brakes were at a 30% and I still had about 3-4 more oil changes until I had to do the rotors/break job. I loved how honest the guy was. He could have easily told me that "yep the guy at Toyota was right" and charged me for a brake job when I don't even need one for a long time. Anyways...these guys are legit and the real deal. They have also put new brakes on my 64 Chevy and did a great job. Always gets me right in and does a fast efficient job. Very reasonable priced too. I'll never take my cars anywhere else!!! read more
