Hotel Oregon is possibly one of my favorite of the McMenamins chain. The Hotel Oregon offers various restaurants inside but I would opt for the Rooftop. The Rooftop is what sets this place apart from the others and offers a great view of the mountains and downtown McMinnville. The food itself is on par and what you would expect from McMenamins. Overall a great place to grab a bite to eat while passing through this area of Oregon. read more

A local NW chain (Oregon/Washington) McMenamins is noted for food that ranges from acceptable to outstanding. Menu is someone limited to my way of thinking. The blackend tuna is to die for, both the happy hour version or the main meal. For drinks I must recommend the Carter bar! The bartender, Ari, is a great acquisition for the McMenamins team. A funny, knowledgeable, talented mixologist (the bartender label is woefully inadequate) she can create not only the old standards, but also her own versions of the same that are out of this world. If that isn't enough, if you can think of it, she can make it! Sadly only open later in the week (usually Thursday thru Sunday) and small enough to be personal with only 4 chairs at the bar and two small tables, it compensates for its size in that it allows Ari to work her magic. Tucked away on the street level, If you are visiting or will only be here once, you MUST try the Carter bar or you will have missed a unique opportunity. Thursday or early in the evening is your best chance at excellence. All that having been said. There are several bars worth a try. The main one at street level is a fine example of what McMenamins and for that matter, what McMinnville has to offer. The rooftop bar offers good service and unexcelled views of the city. The cellar bar has the same good food, and well-made, well-served drinks. There is one more I haven't been to, will edit post to include later. The Hotel Oregon had received top ratings since it opened in the late 1800's. The McMenamins group is a worthy inheritor of the establishment. read more

I met up with a 40 year long friend, her son, his wife and daughter. The appetizers were delicious. The Truffle Tots came with dragon breath garlic dip (not their description). It made me very happy! I eat small portions so my dinner lasted 3 meals. It was good but that was ok. The salad was delicious and Iove bleu cheese dressing. If you get a meal with tots there will be a ton of them. My "nephew" sent me to my hotel with him almost all of his tots! We ate inside so I never saw the rooftop dining which was good since I was freezing inside. Go! read more

Love the Clam Chowder. Probably my favorite Chowder outside of Disneyland. Oregon's collective love of Tots was a weird cultural difference to get used to, but the Cajuns tots are amazing. The burgers are huge but otherwise unimpressive. I recommend the pizza. Staff is hit and miss, sometimes they're great, sometimes they're not. If it weren't so expensive, I'd give four stars, you're definitely paying for the aesthetic here. read more

I'm generally a fan of McMenamins, and this location had a great rooftop bar/patio; however , we received horrible service which included at one point the waitress saying to my boyfriend " I can't wait for this day to be over " , as well as the bartender complaining about being there for 8 hours . Awkward. My friend ordered a drink and the bartender said they were all out of the ingredients to make it ...She orders another , they were all out of that , then she orders a third. Finally she gets a drink . *These drinks were all on the menu , perhaps cross them off when you run out ? She then asks for two cherries in her drink , and the waitress (who was at the bar picking up an order ) makes a snarky comment about it ...The whole atmosphere was bizarre , and I probably won't ever go back . read more

This is a great getaway for happy hour. Great selection of beer on tap, good choice of food, and seating is ample. Try the rooftop bar for a great view of city. Or try the quiet unseen basement bar. Great, clean environment to chill out and drink a few and visit. read more

Food was acceptable, but service was subpar. The traditional eggs Benedict were delicious and a little spicy, which I liked. My husband got the farmers choice scramble and says the cheese wasn't melted all the way. The coffee was bitter. There were four of us dining for breakfast. Two meals came out, and the last two meals came out 10 minutes later due to a mistake. The server communicated with us, but wasn't great at getting everything we needed. Came here late after the alien days and it wasn't as busy as years that I remember. Every single time I come here the service is pretty awful, but today my server was Kelly and it was probably the best service I've had somewhere other than my work (Meridian Restaurant & Bar). Gave this place four tries but it's just not great - the food is typical American, nothing to write home about, but the staff is terrible and disappointing. My spouse and I have both worked in the food industry for many years in our 20's (including low and high end private clubs/bars & establishments) and they clearly need better management and staff training. The hotel is cool and has that going for it but the LONG wait for food and disappointing service is just not worth it. I'll spend my money elsewhere. Yikes! We had friends in town and were excited to take them to a McMenamins. We happen to be in the area, so decided to take them to Oregon Hotel for some food. It was not during peak hours and they did not appear to be "busy." Unfortunately, we waited and waited for our our food, which was meh, once it arrived, then waited even longer for a follow up to see if we wanted anything else, more water? Additional beverages? Belatedly, maybe half-way through the meal, upon the roof of this old hotel, I was struck by the gathering gestalt's undeniable gravity. Physically and aesthetically surrendered to its great alchemic mass, and momentarily intoxicated by surreal presence, I literally pushed myself away from the table in an act of reverent submission, witnessing an entire lifetime within the span of seconds. In humbled awe, I watched the tableau subsume all component elements - clouds, roiling and pregnant, heavily irritable with coming storms; the conifer forests' deep lethal greens; deciduous flashes of savage hue; her hair' painted in tones of warm auburn; pupils dilated, profound in their black depth - coalescing into something at once newborn and treacherous. And then it was gone. The transformation imprinted upon my mental landscape both a texture and a gravity that I will never forget, and if I'm not careful, may destroy me. Would that be so bad? My grandmother baked blackberry pies, and as a child I would sit sore upon knobby knees at the base of her oven, watching the crust pop and flake, the sugar melting, becoming something entirely new. What? Candy? I've thought a great deal about it. It can't be as simple as "candy," really, but there's not much to it. Blackberry juices, some sort of oil, probably leached from the crust. Salt, to be sure, but sugar. Ice-thin, but delicious. Perfect. Candy! But absolutely not candy. A bite would span the entire spectrum of possible experiences. Salt and just enough blackberry bitterness activates saliva, sugars flood the sensory experience. The crust in itself a masterpiece in isolation, but inconceivably so. As is always the case, she died too soon (at 69!), too early for us to tease out her many deeply Texan/Scandinavian secrets, passed mother to daughter through generations, almost distilled oral tradition, yet incorporating uniquely native varieties, the creation of grandma's pie nearly an impenetrable mystery, and yet still a distinctly familial muscle memory. Growing up in the wake of an economically devastated coastal-range hamlet not far from McMinnville, we were treated as children to the delights of abandoned Victorian homes in various phases of being reclaimed by the forest's inevitable shadow. Dispatched to collect blackberries, my brothers, cousins, and I would screech in delight, and rushing into the burnt husks of abandoned domiciles, would pick absurdly huge blackberries from thorny vines choking and ripping the stately old homes asunder. Blackberries are fascinating in their deadly and yet insidious biological inevitability. As children we'd climb into arid crawlspaces and while in hiding from enraged adults, would marvel at the near-alien tenacity of a juvenile shoot, nearly white as the organism puts aside all extraneous resources as it reaches towards the light. Of course, once adequate light is accessible, and we're not talking about a lot of light here, the vines grow at alarming velocity, soon reaching nearly an inch in thickness, the thorns capable of cutting flesh and tearing to shreds protective clothing. As the vines age, they become brown, seemingly dead, but only fire will remove their grasp upon the land. The soil beneath leeched of nearly all nutrients, which is probably why the berries are so fucking good: an explosion of richly sweet and sour juices in each bite. If ever there were an ideal fruit for nature's scorched earth policy, it's the blackberry. Again, I don't know Grandma Ruth's recipe. I have racked my brain trying to remember the ingredients and their portions, and there's always something missing, but the result was always incredible, considering the source. I've very nearly reverted to fetishism in pursuit of ideally-perfect ingredients, and for what? A recreation of that which departed from this world with the death of my grandmother? Why do we do that? She's gone. I sat as an adult on my knees, at the side of her death bed, and cried. And I'm not a crier. But I complained that I'm not ready. I hadn't yet gleaned from her all of her great secrets. She pet my head, and laughed. She said "no, you're ready." In any case, she was right. I was ready. It wasn't easy, but she was right, which leads me to ask why do we screw with it in the first place? Why not just embrace the alchemy, in all its attendant simplicity? Why not just pause and appreciate that the gestalt will only occur once? Why kill ourselves aspiring to recreate that which will never again exist? Why avoid that which is deadly, when we know that's how the story ends? Don't be a pussy. Go to this place. Sit on the roof in the rain, and allow yourself to be surprised by each chilled drop as it strikes your lips and nose. Lean forward, and get closer to the person who trembles in flushed anxiety. Say the words. Look about you. Live it now. Don't be a pussy. It's fucking magic. read more

Very disappointing and flat out rude service multiple times we have been there. It seems like we are an inconvenience to the restaurant. We actually had one of the upstairs bar managers get mad at us when we moved tables and let the server know so it wouldn't cause a problem. Guess the guests ARE a problem. We have had good service at the Cellar bar down stairs and enjoy the live music and most likely will limit our visits to that location. Not a good example of our nice little town. I love McMenamins. Love the concept love the beers and love the atmosphere. Stayed over the weekend with a group of friends at the hotel and naturally went to the bars and restaurant. What I don't love is their service. If you go to a McMenamins you know not to expect the best service... You live with it. But in this case it was beyond comprehension. Went to breakfast with our group. I showed up a little late and was going to also order. It looked like there were two or three waitresses and I was patient. I looked at the menu and knew what I wanted but after 15 minutes of being ignored I still was in a nice mood to go up to the bar to just make sure the waitress saw me. After I said excuse me, I was rudely greeted with "I saw you come in, I have a six top and we're really busy. Go sit down and I will take your order when I get there." Wow! Really? After another 15 minutes the very rude waitress asked what I wanted. I told her I didn't want anything. She asked if I changed my mind. I said yes, I'm not ordering since you're obviously too busy to handle it. She attempted to tell me she could rush the order. Uh no thanks. You're not getting my business. There are a lot of nice cafes around that serve better food and certainly have better customer service. I won't stop going to a McMenamins but I will avoid this one for sure. McMenamins management you need to listen to your customers about the service. I had 4 Cosmic Tripsters with me and they were pretty upset. I attempted to eat lunch here on a couple of occasions. First time I was disappointed by the quality of the food and especially the service, so I thought on the second occasion, they were having a bad day. Let's try them again. Second time, more of the same as the first time. I regretfully advise to stay clear of this place if coming for the food. Though I do hear they have a lovely view from the roof, I can't say it's worth putting up with the inattentive staff and lousy food to see it. When I think of McMenamins, I think of cajun tots, good beer, and laughs with friends. Wow, this was an awful experience. The waiter we had was simply awful. I believe his name was Jesse...something with a "J" anyway. He looked like he fell out of the "too cool and bored with all this to give any kind of facial expression" tree and hit every branch. Long sideburns...talks too softly for you to hear him over the music... you'll know him if you get him. It took 15 minutes to get a beer. After ordering the beer, I watched him putter around doing nothing for a long time. Eventually I had to get out of my seat to talk to him. I asked if the beers were coming. He said yes, then went back to wasting time. Eventually he poured the beers and brought them over. Someone in our party asked for another glass of water and it never came. My sandwich did not come as I ordered it, all of the meat was piled in the center so that 3 bites contained all the ingredients and my plate ended up full of bread. This was a joke. I really like the chain, but this location was awful - almost entirely because of our horrible service. Please fire this guy. read more

Okay, so let me start by saying that this place only received the 2nd star based on the first experience we had here. If you want a drink, this place is great, if you want food or anything else, run away as fast as you can. Last year, my girlfriend and I stopped by this place for a drink. The incredibly knowledgeable bar tender sat and chatted with us about scotch before recommending an amazing new scotch that we had never tried before. Could not have been friendlier or more willing to just chat while still taking care of the other patrons. We then went down to the cellar as it was too cold for the roof top and had another drink. Cool spot for a drink. Fast forward to today. We returned based on our previous experience and thought we try this spot for lunch. You can seat yourself which we tried to do, however, out of the 8 available tables, not a single one had been bused and they were all dirty. We were told to sit anywhere which we did only to wait another 10 minutes before I was forced to go to the bar and speak with one of the four people working and ask them to clear the table. We then placed our drink orders which came promptly. My girlfriend ordered a hot totti called a Bourbon Furnace that had sugar in the bottom that needed to be stirred in. I asked our waiter for silverware which had not been brought when they bused the table to which he replied, "Your silverware will come with your meal" and walked away. We then ordered food which took nearly 30 minutes and I received the wrong order. When I asked for another drink the waiter said one minute and walked away never to return. If the place was packed I would understand, however we were one of three tables with four waiters working. Did not make sense. When the bill came they had billed me for both the sandwiches they brought, not just the one I ordered. Nothing was offered for the mistake, wait or lack of service. I will never return to this spot for food guaranteed. read more

Went there today for lunch, a bit after noon. The pub was about 40%, really not that busy. We seated ourselves & waited a few minutes for a waitress. She was friendly & while handing us menus, stated there would be an hour wait once food was ordered. Normally, we are told the wait for food is 35 to 45 minutes. I have seen ads in the local paper looking for help in all areas of this McMenamins Pub. Possibly, shorthanded at this time. Hope it improves, this is a neat place to visit. read more

All can be done at McMennamins Rooftop Bar - minus the prying eyes and ears of your parents =) (Unless your parents are there, too?!) Thursdays, due to the thirstiness it associates with, are the night to come out and play with the Linfield students. The great art decorating the walls, the architecture of the old building, the lighting, the mood ... But damn! The view from the bar upstairs is incredible! It's a nice place, but still very casual =) Good drinks, great beer, all reasonably priced. A great restaurant downstairs boasts a tasty menu full of burgers, pasta, appetizers and other delectable entrees. And if you're feeling lucky? Rent a room. (Ooh, you dirty, dirty boy.) I grew up going to this pub with my Dad, and the food has always been decent and the service horrible. it's just how it is. Like with most McMenamin's, you learn to accept it and don't let it ruin your beer and tots experience. They do have a breakfast happy hour which I thought was cute. It was actually a meal at a discounted price vs. the evening happy hour which is really just a smaller portion set to match the lower price. So thats a plus. While I waited for my meal I enjoyed overhearing a conversation between a catering employee and my waiter regarding a certain smokable herb. At any other establishment I might be bothered by this but here my expectations are low, so didn't let it get to me. read more

I have been going to McMenamins for over 10 years and back in the day......the food was great. Dinner last night was a complete disaster. The customer service was terrible, and we waited 30 minutes to get our drinks, and over an hour and a half for our food! Our drink order consisted of two waters and a rum and coke! Why would that ever take 30 minutes? We waited for over an hour to get our meals, when we asked the waiter about it he was very rude and said it was just a crazy night and he couldn't do anything about it. (We were at the rooftop, and there was one other table that had guests that we could see!) A few minutes later he came out to let us know the "kitchen" didn't see our order so our food hadn't even been started yet! The table sitting next to us was also getting irritated about their long wait, having to ask for menus three times, and not getting their drinks for more than 30 minutes. They confronted the waiter and were kicked out. Apparently they had ordered similar dinners than us, because after they left our waiter came to our table (this was about 70 minutes in) and said they threw out part of our dinner because they thought our food was the tables that had just left! And while they were telling us this, another server came over laughing and asking if we were the table that got our food thrown away! We spoke to a manager who was extremely rude, all he kept saying was how busy they were! But we have been to the rooftop plenty of times when it was very busy, and we have never had this bad of an experience. In the end, after waiting the hour and a half for our food, we got one meal taken off our bill! read more

FYI -Review written Dec 28 2011. First time at a McMenamins. From friends and others it sounded like a great place to stay. We got a 'package' deal thought was a good value including Evergreen Air Museum ( which is a 5*****) , 50$ dinner credit and 20$ breakfast. Good news. (when you make reservation make it sound like dinner & breakfast are included, no big deal, but stating the food credit would have been more up front.) I really liked the place, but something is seriously wrong with management or lack of. Food was Ok for dinner, pub food, thought they had a dinner menu, not. Had dinner area, it was closed or no one was seated there. I liked the concept of eating and staying in the same place with the credits, the breakfast was the deal breaker. Three tables full in the whole place and 45 minutes later pancakes and French toast show up. On my second expresso 20 minutes in I asked nicely how much longer for food. Told should be right up that took another ten minutes... Not recommended. There is a B&B type place across the street that looked great and had a packed dinner crowd. read more

These pubs are in a stunning, historical old building which is a definite place to stop and check out if you're driving through McMinville. I'd even go so far as to say it's a destination location. The hotel itself is gorgeous, and there are three - count 'em - three bars that are part of the old hotel, and each is unique and fun. You'll probably end up doing what we did - visiting all three! Which will be great because then you can enjoy viewing the hotel in its entirely. The beer is McMenamins, which is solid, decent beer. You can drink it either in a very fun Cellar Bar, which feels like you're in a stone pub in Ireland, or you can go to the very lovely and spacious bar on the main floor, or visit the piece de resistance, The Rooftop Bar. The views are just spectacular, and they tell me that on a clear day, you can see forever - well, at least you can see as far as Mt Hood & Mt Rainer! We spent quite a leisurely afternoon here, longer than we were expecting, and enjoyed every minute of it. The service was spectacular, the beer good, the views peaceful & pleasant, and it was fun to admire all the amazing, unique art and decor of this lovely old place. So much fun! I've always loved this food, but have agreed with the talk that the service has been below adequate. But all that seems to have changed. I went to the pub and had one of the greatest experiences I've had in downtown McMinnville. We were lucky to go to the pub on a Saturday night when there was live music on the main floor. The musicians were awesome. Our server was sweet and very efficient throughout our meal. The food was delicious and the brews were perfect as usual. Now I will definitely recommend this place to anyone who comes into town. read more
