MUST READ/ THESE GUYS ARE CROOKS: Last week I spoke to Charlie and told him I needed an appointment to have my Chevy truck checked bumper to bumper since I would be driving it from San Antonio, TX to California. When I arrived a few days ago on the morning of the agreed date, I was told it could take possibly until the next day to finish the check and that's without any needed repairs. It was obvious that the person checking my truck would be multi tasking and working on other vehicles resulting in a very long unneeded wait time. They did offer me a lowner car since they did not finish that day but the lowner car had a very strong smell of piss. The next morning I received the email with full details of their findings. I spoke with Charlie about the AC that needed to have cold air coming into the truck for our long hot trip. Charlie said that the only way is to replace the entire AC system and quoted me $3,400. Within 30 minutes I went to the shop, returned the lowner and paid the requested $132 for the check. I drove straight to J & C Auto in Helotes and within one hour I had ice cold air after adding Freon and costing me only $200. I spoke to the owner/Chris at MD Auto about this obvious desire to screw me with a quote of a large extra charge and then getting the AC fixed at J &C for $200. I asked for a full refund but Chris only gave me a credit of $67. Chris also added comments on the repair I got from J & C and most likely wouldn't stay fixed for very long.. We got home yesterday to California (3 days) and yes the AC was and still is ice cold. DO NOT USE THESE CROOKS!! read more

I would probably agree with other comments, they are friendly. I took my truck in to check brakes. They wanted to buff them instead of replace them which would have been my choice because they were going out. Why try to fix them if they are not working anymore. Just replace with brand new ones. Anyway I signed the paperwork when I dropped off my truck which I didn't like, after they called me with the enormous cost, I said no thanks. When I said it was a little out of my price range, the front desk guy replied, "we are very thorough". They fixed a bad radiator flush that happened from the gents at Thousand Oaks Automotive on north side, who left bubbles in my radiator system after a screwed flush. My truck was steaming so I took it to md which they fixed but probably not going to use them again because they wanted to try and buffer brakes for a large amount instead of installing new brakes which probably would have still been an arm and a leg. First I will start off by saying it was potentially a good experience with how thorought the diagnostic seemed. We had an AC issue as well as a stutter problem with out vehicle. Original diagnostic ran somewhere in the range of $49. Vehicle was fixed within a 48 hour span. We thought the issue was over however two weeks later we are having the same issue. We contact the location to let them know the issue was not fixed only to be quoted now a $130 diagnotic fee. I get having to assess the problem but charging us more on potentially the same issue that was not fixed doesn't seem right. Then not wanting to work on the matter had me score them low. Too costly and lack of follow through on previous maintenance isses. read more

Took my truck for engine light diagnostic and was originally quoted $130 to determine problem. but when called to check they said it would be an additional $1100 to help with diagnostic and not to help fix the truck. So I didn't proceed. I picked up the truck and was the employee judged color of my skin and assumed my name was Juan. After persistently calling me by that name I told him it was not that and other employees just kept laughing at the situation. Nice enough people but a few things 1, they just don't pay attention to details at the front desk. I gave my time restraints and they were ignored. 2, They were my second opinion and came in so over priced even double on two issues. 3 maybe not fair of me to mention because I can't prove it happened at their location because my car went to two locations for an hour or two before I noticed not 1 but 2 major marks on my car in 2 very different locations on the car. First off, I'll give them props for diagnosing my car's issue. That's something I could not have done without tools to read the codes. (Turned out that my car's inability to accelerate randomly was due to a short in one of the tail lights, which sent voltage feedback to the computer, making it think I was braking, thus shutting down the throttle. Weird.) The diagnosis was worth the $117. However, I was then quoted a price of $509 total to replace the tail light assembly. Not sure what they charge for labor, but I bought the part online myself for $75 and replaced it in about 5 minutes, saving over $300. Seems a bit off. read more

Chris was very friendly and knowledgeable about my vehicle. Overall I found MD Automotive to be very highly priced - $79 for an oil change and the only oil option for my vehicle was Mobile One which is very expensive - they did not stock any other brand for my car. They also stated my spark plugs needed replacement at 30k miles even though they are 100k spark plugs and wanted $278 to replace 4 plugs (said the plugs were $45 apiece - at AutoZone they ran between $8-18). Overall they were even more expensive than a Honda Dealership!! read more

While this seems like a good quality family run repair shop, and all of the employees that I interacted with were extremely kind and knowledgeable their prices (higher than the dealership) and scheduling (they were kind enough to squeeze me in but typically you have to book about a week-ish in advance to be seen in a reasonable time) prohibit me from giving them higher than two stars. I am a pretty firm believer in supporting local family run businesses and I am willing to spend the extra dollar to do so, but their prices were so high I had to go elsewhere. read more

The guys at the shop were really friendly, maybe a bit too friendly. They made me feel like I was a life long customer on my first time in. They called me buddy and all that. Prices are a bit high for parts , but labor cost is right on with other places. They told me my car was not running right after they fixed it, and tried to get another grand out of me. I can make an appointment for an oil change that ends up be cheaper than going to one of the "oil change" places in town. My review is based on my one experience from today: Getting my dad's truck inspected. I got there at 11:15 and was out by 11:50. The three gentlemen I interacted with while there very very friendly. Their waiting area is clean and comfortable. Instead of gross and uncomfortable chairs they had comfortable couches. A big tv was playing an older movie, there was a huge fish tank, and there were magazines to look through. It even smelled good in there, lol. I was offered a drink while I waited. Not a bad way to spend time waiting for car work. $14.50 total for the inspection. read more

I love this place. Every time I leave here (happy), I say I'm going to write a review and I never do. Today is the day. The courtesy and chipper personality these people have is always unbelievable. Especially for a car shop. They are always happy to see you, polite, smiling and energetic. I've seen them offer the computer chair they were sitting in to an older gentleman waiting in line, offer people rides to their destinations if they drop their car off, let my rambunctious son play with a little model car they have in the office and they once told me "ma'am, we wouldn't do anything to your car that we wouldn't do to our mother's." That's what I like to hear! They've always got water and fresh coffee available, not to mention the awesome fish tank that entertains the young ones (thank goodness). They are sometimes a tad pricey, but to be honest, wouldn't you rather pay a higher price for someone you trust? I would. Anyways, I don't have enough positive things to say about these guys. I certainly hope that what I'm experiencing is true and sincere because if so, they've got a customer for life (and all the people I've referred)! BRAVO! read more

This is an ongoing review; we are not done with them yet. We took our truck in for a front end alignment and had them check out the steering. The didn't do the alignment since there were so many issues with it, one of which is a missing steering damper. They didn't charge us a dime. They are going to provide a list of issues, so grudgingly we provided an email address based on the promise that they would use it just for the quote. Within a few hours we got an email asking for us to rate our experience; I suspect this won't be the last of the spam. I will keep you posted on the quote.... read more

Be careful there. My car had one of the lights on the dashboard on. I had been told I need repairs that cost almost 400$. After I did a second opinion at the dealership paying for the diagnostics, I had been told by the dealer that all I need is to top off a fluid. The problem was solved for free, except for the diagnostic charge. The MD does good job if something is broken, but you better to make sure you really need the job done. read more

I moved into the area about 3 yrs ago, and began going to MD Automotive when I purchased a $50 coupon book from walking solicitors in my neighborhood. Initially, the shop seemed very friendly and honored all the coupons in my coupon book. Joe, the front desk attendant was always friendly and answered all my questions as well as he could. I have since brought two of my vehicles here on numerous occasions for little repairs and scheduled maintenance tasks. Since then, within the last year, I've noticed that Joe has left the shop and my experiences with MD Automotive have gone downhill. I brought my vehicle in for routine maintenance one time and while it was in, they recommended changing the serpentine belt. I told them to go ahead, and when my vehicle was returned to me I noticed squeaking from the new belt (which it hadn't before). I took the vehicle back and they told me the wheel bearing was going bad on the alternator and that I would have to buy a new one for over $300. Weird, there wasn't any squeaking before hand but after they put the new belt on, my alternator all of a sudden needs replaced. This bugs me because I know alternators can be rebuilt for cheaper and a bearing can be replaced as well. They also quoted me over $1000 dollars in repairs needed in addition to the alternator. I told them to forget about it. Later, when I took the vehicle back in for an oil change and a wheel rotation, they quoted me over $1300 dollars in repairs that were "needed" with no indication of level of necessity. Amongst these repairs were different ones from the original list of repairs detailed to me during the last visit. Again, I left with a bitter taste in my mouth and declined any further repairs. A couple weeks after leaving, I called MD Automotive to get the list of repairs so that i could get a second opinion. They asked if they could call me back to which I said sure. They never called back, so I again called them to which they said they couldn't find anything and that the needed repairs must have never been documented. My neighbor had also visited MD Automotive when his brakes went out. He was quoted nearly $1100 in repairs and declined service. He went to another guy who got his car back on the road again for less than $300. Recently, I've noticed some new members of the team, and a lot of renovations to the shop (inside and out). Although, I understand the need to "professionalize" your business, I feel that they are trying to pull in all kinds of revenue at the customer's expense to update the look of the shop. And just like a previous reviewer wrote, the staff is very friendly, but to a point where it's toooo friendly. They act like you're a long-time friend, in a way that is too obvious and almost uncomfortable. I'd rather go to a hole in the wall joint who fixed the things I needed to get fixed and did not find a laundry list of other repairs on a vehicle with 77,000 miles on it. I'm obviously not a certified mechanic so I'm always real skeptical when I take my car to the shop. I don't want to get "hosed". I will most likely not go back to MD Automotive. read more

Your review: I found MD automotive after trying several other mechanics and am never leaving. I have a beat-up 04 civic that I'm trying to make last as long as possible. They'll charge you a little bit more than most guys (they even have a little plaque on their front counter that implies as much), but their stuff comes wth a warranty - though I've never had to use it! You can go somewhere else and get it done cheaper, and it MIGHT get done correctly the first time, but I don't mind paying a little extra to KNOW it was done right the first time. read more

Third clue was: Recommendation for a $900 spark plug and coil replacement on a car that I drove in for routine maintenance and that was running fine. I have taken 2 of my cars there for service. Its always pleasant if I wait they offer me awater and the remote. Every person who works there from the owner to the janitor are courteous. Everywhere was clean even the restroom really strange for a automotive shop. I have never had to take either of my vehicles back for the same reason I like that a lot. Very much a rip off. Came in telling them exactly what issues I needed to have repaired and they charged me $400.00 to keep my car 4 days and tell me the exact things I already said. Don't recommend ever using them. They said car would be ready at 7am in the morning showed up at 7:30 and still had to wait over an hour for vehicle. This company wants to scam you for diagnostic fees and not actually do any work! Typical mechanic shop! Overpriced! Talks out both sides of the mouth! Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy! I would not recommend this place to anyone! I took my car in to have an oil change, new brake pads, and a flat tire fixed. When I received a phone call from them about going forward with the work I asked, they said they found that my power steering fluid was leaking, and that this would cause me to fail inspection. To fix the leak, they would have to replace the entire steering column, which would be over $1000. THEY, however, caused the leak by poking a hole in part of the column to "test to see if there was a leak." Now the refuse to fix the leak THEY CAUSED unless I pay for the entire column to be replaced. On top of that, they botched the flat tire repair. Stay away from these guys! read more

I went there the other day and they tried to charge me $5000 for a repair and the same day I called a friend that worked at a ford dealership and showed him the inspection result MD gave me and he told me the repairs should only cost $1000 ! He then made a call to a different repair shop and they were able to fix my car for $900. It's now working perfectly and everything. MD does have a really good environment but they'll try there best to squeeze as much money out of you as they can. They also tried to charge me for 2 inspection fees. read more
