My wife and I went to MDRD for dinner for the first time, and it was easily one of the best restaurant and dining experiences I've ever had. For starters, the atmosphere is second to none. We dined in the evening so the views of the city from the 27th floor of the Amway were just phenomenal. You can tell it's fine dining but it's also got a cool, relaxed vibe to it at the same time. Our server, Sherly, was absolutely fantastic. You can tell that she not only cared about giving a good experience, but she also cared about the restaurant and the food and took pride in that. She was attentive and friendly, but she also went the extra mile to offer suggestions and walk us through the menu and even explain the components of each dish when they were served to us. She went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience, which we did. I ordered the gin and tonic from their cocktail menu, my wife ordered a mocktail, and both were delicious and started things off on a high note. The food menu is concise yet diverse, which we appreciated. We ordered the Ensalada de Pepino for an appetizer to share, and the presentation of the dish was stunning (this was a common theme throughout all the dishes). It was a cucumber salad over a salsa verde, and the freshness of the cucumber paired well with the sweetness of the peppers and saltiness of the cheese. I would definitely recommend this as a starter. They have a decent selection of tapas and we got a couple of those to share as well. My wife is a picky eater and doesn't like anything too exotic (which the menu does have a lot of), but luckily we were able to find a couple tapas that she would like. We ordered Patatas Bravas and Croquetas de Jamon. The Patatas Bravas were phenomenal; it was essentially a pyramid of fried potatoes over a bed of salsa which acted as a fry sauce. Every single potato was crispy, super impressive that they achieved that. The Croquetas were fried perfectly golden brown and the crispiness matched well with the ooey gooey cheese and ham filling. For the main courses, my wife ordered the Pollo Asado and I ordered the Vieiras (scallops). The Pollo Asado was a perfectly seasoned chicken breast over a bed of rice. The chicken was juicy and the carrots it came with brought some nice color to the dish. The Vieiras were phenomenal. Easily the best scallops I've ever had. They were pan seared and cooked perfectly, not overly seasoned, and they just melted in your mouth. They were served over a bed of salsa verde rice and came with sherry glazed mushrooms that brought some earthy notes to this dish. Definitely one of the best dishes I've ever tasted. For dessert, we ordered the Arbol de Caramelo, which includes a dark chocolate souffle, strawberry gelato and cotton candy. The presentation of this dish was stunning, and they even included a happy birthday message for my wife. The dessert tasted as good as it looked; the souffle was rich and decadent and the gelato was bright and fruity. It'll be hard not to order this dessert every time we go back. All in all, MDRD is one of the best restaurants I've been to. It is pricy as you'd probably imagine, but it's honestly not that expensive when you think about the quality of the food you're getting and the impeccable ambience and service they provide. DON'T GO TO MDRD unless you are a name. They treat ordinary people like shit. Would give zero stars if I could. We had out of town guest and wanted to share with them what we thought was the best GR had to offer. Sadly mistaken. Mgmt was rude and condescending. After informing us that our table wasn't ready when we arrived we came back 10 mins later to be seated at a lounge table that had been empty at the time we arrived. Obviously the table we had "reserved" went to someone the mgr liked better. Or worse wanted to suck up to. We asked for better table and were told that we be moved in a couple of minutes. 45 minutes later nothing happened Never ever going there or to any restaurant or service related to the Amway Grand. Well, get ready to wait 6 weeks for a reservation.... I've been twice now, and I used Open Table to make a reservation. I would use them because they partner with MDRD. This place is pricey, but the food and the view are AMAZING! Their drinks are fantastic too. We started with the 'Pimientos' appetizer and I opted for a glass of white wine this time. Ordered the Cochinillo Asado, (Pork Belly), while my friends had Paella. My only criticism is that the Paella rice had the flavor of the nonstick pan it was cooked in. I have sensed that with my own cooking using Teflon non-stick pans. This was a disappointment. A good chef would pick up on this.... While it was not clear to us that the window view reservation was non-refundable, the general manager helped us and we appreciated the follow up. We had 4 of us so it was an extra $100 we had to spend for the table and while the food was good, it was not worth an additional $100 on top of already expensive prices. I wrote that lone sentence and posted pictures after my initial dining experience at the beginning of 2021...Yes, this review was a long time coming. We dined for the first time back on Valentine's Day Eve. We were blown away by the service, ambience, and amazing food/drinks. Of course, I had to share the experience with my sisters so we went on March 26 during our traveling dinner (We went to MDRD, Tupelo Honey, Margaux and Roam). Then, we took friends from Houston for drinks and dessert on July 13. When we travel with them, they take us to places like The Little Goat in Chicago and Nobu in Vegas, so we had to take them to the best restaurant in town! Then, we celebrated my cousin's engagement with dinner after wedding dress shopping on October 29. Wonderful place for special occasions! I can't rave enough about how beautiful absolutely everything is here, so I'll let the pictures do it for me. It really deserves to be ranked #1 in USA Today's best new restaurant! (I voted multiple times!). I will say that my absolute favorite dessert is the lemon one. Also, my favorite small bite is the salmon plate. We have never gotten a bad seat here. We've never experienced anything but the utmost friendliest service. And you can never order wrong - I literally can do eeny meeny miney moe on the menu and love whatever my finger lands on! What an amazing dining experience! The location on the 27th floor of the Amway Grand Tower provided great views of the river and city. The modern decor was unexpected and very well done. The service was impeccable- thank you Mitchell and crew! I enjoyed the delicious Te de Sol cocktail and my husband enjoyed the Spanish wine as suggested. We began with marinated olives as the amuse bouche from the chef and then enjoyed fat, tender, grilled Michigan asparagus. It was amazingly tender for being so large in diameter. My scallop entrée was one of the top five meals I'be had in the US. It was served on a bead of pea-infused rice. Everything was delicately and thoughtfully seasoned. Wow! Spectacular view of the river from the 27th floor. Most of the bar patrons got a drink that is their version of an espresso martini. I opted for 1942 and an old fashioned. My partner got a glass of rosé and a dirty martini. The bartender helped us with a few vegan options. The paella is to die for! Whatever the do to the mushrooms to get their flavor is fantastic! My boyfriend and I came to MDRD after many friends raved about the food and ambiance! It is a super sleek spot downtown on the 27th floor of the Amway Grand and I'd say definitely consider this place for a special occasion. We weren't celebrating anything in particular except wanting to go out for a fun night. I made reservations through OpenTable well in advanced just to get a weekend 7pm reservation (keeping in mind the view and timing of sunset) and it worked out super well. We parked in the ramp across the street and took the skywalk over, but not quite knowing where the elevators to the restaurant was located. It's right next to Wolfgang's and once you go beyond the main lobby, you'll see a host stand and sign to check in. The check in process was pretty seamless and they validated parking, which was very nice! After going up the elevators, we were greeted by a handful of staff at the host stand ready to take us to our table. A little disappointed that I made reservations so far in advance and we had a table right near the bathroom. It kept our dinner super quiet and the view was pretty, but we found that we missed some of the other ambiance of the bar, other tables and the majority of the restaurant due to our spot. We ended up ordering 3 tapas and 2 main plates and it was plenty of food! The server recommended the dishes we got and said we wouldn't be disappointed and he was correct! Everything we had was really good but it is pricey. If you're used to smaller tapas, know that these all completely range in size. The octopus could have easily been a light meal for one. It was grilled and well seasoned but unfortunately a little bit too chewy for me. The salmon tapa was by far my favorite! It was on a puff pastry and warm so we got a little too excited and didn't realize the heat that may still come from it. Though totally worth a quick mouth burn. The ahi tuna was probably my least favorite because it was in a cone. That didn't disperse the flavors that well, keeping the tuna all on top and the avocado in the cone. I would have appreciated it being more even throughout instead of the presentation. All in all, I'd say all 3 were good but not phenomenal where I keep thinking about it. As for the main plates, we also asked the server his recommendation and he said 10 times out of 10, he'd get the pork belly and his other top choices would be the scallops and the cod. We went with the pork belly and scallops. The plates photograph beautifully and are well plated. I did enjoy both but the pork belly was a bit dry for my liking and a bit too salty, while the scallops were perfect (and huge)!! Very good food and great location (views of Grand Rapids). We didn't like the aggressiveness of the waiter. We ordered a bottle of wine and then he brought another more expensive bottle along with the bottle we ordered and said to taste the difference so he could upsell. He did this several times making suggestions that seemed like he was trying to be helpful but clearly was his way of building a higher priced bill. This behavior was cheesy at best and should be kept on used car lots. Hence, 3 stars and only a 15% tip for having to thwart his pushiness. It took some time to come up with the five stars I'm giving. I recently visited Basque country so my tastebuds were completely distorted upon visiting MDRD. No matter, this is a cool place. The set up is awesome. It probably looks better on a sunny day, but looking over the city at night is always fun. All of the staff is also great. Inviting and knowledgeable. Outside of the menu, I'm not sure what else is Spanish. After a google search, it seems like the chef has a heavy background in Spanish cooking or at least he spent a year traveling in Spain to put the MDRD menu together. If you know Spanish food, the menu is enticing and even if you don't, it's a good exploration into it. As for the food, our waitress suggested Salmon con Trufa to start, and that may have been the best thing. The bacalao (salt cod) was pretty good, probably enjoyed it more than the scallops, though it's not on the menu as of writing this review. Overall, this seems to be like a mix of Spanish gastronomy with some Americanized things. I could definitely see the Arbol de Caramelo at a high-end Spanish place. I think one thing that would make this a truly Spanish experience would be adding a tasting menu. A lot of this food goes above and beyond and that would add a nice chef's touch because it's not something a lot of places over here do. But hey, I love all the ideas of this place and while the food doesn't taste exactly like Spain, everything at least brought us back to the fun we had over there. read more

We waited a month to get a weekend reservation at MDRD. The first reservation we had, we missed because of sickness so our visit was much anticipated. Upon arrival to the Amway, we went to the elevators where the MDRD stand was (just before you get to the Wolfgang Puck restaurant). There's a hostess that asks for your name and tells you that you're able to go up the elevator to your table. It feels very posh. They're very good amount limiting the number of people, so it felt nice knowing we would get superb service. Our server was good about running through the menu with us on what was popular in each section. We were given complimentary olives that were really tasty - there were slivers of orange and lemon peel, rosemary sprigs and plenty of olive oil. I liked the little picks that made them easy to eat and there were no pits. The atmosphere and details down to the flatware and dishes were very well thought out. We started with tapas of shrimp and octopus. We'd seen photos of this octopus dish all over social media - being fans of the octopus at San chez, we had to get it. We were a bit underwhelmed as the texture wasn't quite as tender as it should have been. We've had octopus many times and if it's not cooked long enough, it can be a bit tough. It probably needed to be cooked a bit longer. The flavor was nice and didn't really need a sauce. The potatoes that came with it were perfect. The chorizo oil was delicious and mild enough. Our shrimp appetizer was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was a very nice size. The only thing I'd do differently for those is add a little kick. The chili wasn't hot at all. For our main course we got the paella for two - it was so good! I think it was our favorite part of the meal. The shrimp, again, were a good portion and size. The flavor of saffron came through and it was just perfectly crisp on the edges of the pan. I'd get this again for sure. My mezcal margarita was awesome. The mezcal had a light bite to it - it was infused with guajillo peppers and had that great Smokey flavor from the mezcal. I will get this again if we have the pleasure of coming back. Although the dessert menu looked enticing, I think seeing all of the pictures of them was enough for me. We prefer a more "basic" dessert so we headed downstairs for cookies and homemade ice cream. They do look really cool though! I was hoping to give 5 stars here, but I just couldn't get past the octopus not being done perfectly. Everything else was so amazing and that just missed the mark for me. Maybe they had rushed it with how many we had seen coming out? We went back in November of 2022 to see if the initial kinks had been sorted out. We didn't try the same things we had the first time around because they were sort of disappointing (as compared to the real thing in Spain). The new stuff we tried was really good. This included the roasted bone marrow, which was fantastic and Skate wing among other things. The food was really good. They still refuse to offer you any bread (except with the Pan con Tomate which has to have it) to mop up the delicious sauces although we were again able to talk our server into sneaking us out a couple of slices. Our server explained that the Chef refuses to offer bread. Something about people not stuffing themselves on it or something like that. Anyway, I think next time we go we're going to smuggle our own bread in here. I would still recommend this restaurant. read more

We went here for my birthday on a Friday. We were quickly seated at our reservation time to our table on the tiers/stairs. That was really cool. Our waitress VERY thoroughly explained the cocktails and neither of us liked them. They tasted very weak and too sugary. I sent mine back and got an old staple (aviation- look it up!) I would not recommend to order off the cocktail list but they do nice classic cocktails (old fashioned, etc). The complimentary olives were really good! We ordered two starters. The octopus started out good- the meat more towards the tips of the tentacles was good but as you traveled up the tentacle, the meat was slimy and very soft which made us think it wasn't cooked properly. It turned my stomach. The beef tartar was ok, but what ruined it for me were the obviously purchased (not house made) root chips. They were crumbly and too small to use as a dipper! Crostinis would be much better. My main dish was the scallops. They were cooked well but there was a dollop of aioli (tasted like helmens mayo) on each scallop. The aioli completely overpowered the scallop so I scraped it off. Also there was ham sticking out of the scallops that I assume was intended to be eaten. It was incredibly salty and chewy- almost impossible to eat. This dish was $50! :( My husband really liked the filet. It was cooked perfectly. The arbol dessert was really great and my favorite part of the meal. Our bill was $231 before tip. It was too expensive for a sub par meal. The crazy awesome cocktails, and of course the artistic presentation of the food. Start with the aged mAnhattan. If you go soon, it will be extra aged because it has been aging the entire shut down! Wine wise they have some tasty tempranillos and yummy Spanish wines. Food wise the tapas were fun and the entrees packed some serious flavor. The scallops were not only gorgeous but texturally fun and absolutely delicious. The desserts..... order them all! They were full flavored and fully designed. When we asked for the utensils to eat the seafood, we were told that they had a very limited supply of them. My dessert was a work of art ( The Lemon), my husbands the work of an amateur. He had the doughnut filled with flan. The doughnut was close to stale. We dinned at MDRD on the evening of the 3rd of Feb. it was our first time being there since this level had been renovated from Signus. We had a wonderful experience here, from first contact at the downstairs hostess station to leaving being merrily waved out of the restaurant by handful of staff asking us to come again. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, modern, clean, and staff are all friendly and respectful. We started with drinks. I had the Bramble, which I asked if the bar could modify the whiskey-to-gin ratio as I'm not a huge whiskey fan. They did a wonderful job and it was lip-smacking good with the rich raspberry flavor and smoked rosemary. My husband, who is a huge whiskey and craft cocktail snob, had the Solera and he loved it. He compared favorably it to a Vieux Carré. We ordered the Croquetas tapas to start, which was just melt-in-your-mouth amazing. We then asked our server if she thought that we could order the Jamon y Quesos plate and a single serving of the Paella and have room for dessert. She said that was a great idea. The Quesos plate came with three cheese, and six different cured meats, including a delicious pate, as well as olives and a jammy quince spread. Oh. and tastily seasoned crisps. The paella was also delicious, with jumbo shrimp, chicken, beautifully seasoned rice, and these wonderfully crispy slices of chorizo. Between the two of us, we ate about 7/8s of the single serving skillet. By this time I had also enjoyed the Sherry Cobbler and the house Gin & Tonic. Both are wonderful though be aware that the Gin& Tonic comes in a a fishbowl sized-goblet! My husband had The Expat, and a standard Old Fashioned. He loved all of his drinks, which I cannot stress enough of how rare it is. He's known among family and friends as as a whiskey cocktail perfectionist and often makes his own bitters and syrups for our home bar. Inevitably, there's always something less than ideal when we are out for drinks (his most frequent complaint is when bartenders add water to his Old Fashioneds), but on this evening there were only noises of delight. After hearing the dessert options from our server, which are all intentionally conceptual and aesthetic, we decided on the Arbol de Carmello, which is impressive in both presentation and flavor. The chocolate soufflé with the dried strawberry crumbles is festivity of texture and flavor. Add in the strawberry gelato and it's practically symphonic. The spun sugar and dark chocolate tree is stunning as well as delicious. I cannot forget our fantastic server, Tina, who talked us through the menu, made recommendations based on her favorites, was wonderfully prompt with refills and service, and was professional, pleasant, and gracious. This place has such a fun vibe. I love the decor and the cool tiered seating. We came here for dinner and knew we had to try the octopus. We had amazing octopus in Mykonos a few years back and there aren't many places that serve it in town. It was good, but not Mykonos level good. We also had the cheese board which was fantastic! I eat a lot of cheese boards and this one was so tasty. HUGE, really awesome meats and cheese, the blue was my favorite. I had the scallops and my husband had the pork belly. Both very good. The pork belly was probably the best cooked we've had. Dessert was gorgeous but just fine. Didn't blow me away. I would come back for that cheeseboard and the margarita every day. My date and I enjoyed a special evening at MDRD. It was a unique and glamorous experience in a dramatic space. The staff was very accommodating and professional. The waiter walked us through the menu, providing suggestions and educating us about the many delicious options. The food was very delicious, we had grilled asparagus and a potato casserole for an appetizer. My better half had the Iberico pork loin, and I had the ribeye. Both entrees were tender and flavorful and plated beautifully. Our drinks were the hot toddy, and the mezcal cocktails were unique. The desert was a lemon meringue shaped like a lemon, which was spectacular -- light and flavorful after a rich meal. Located on the 27th floor of the amway grand, the new design of the restaurant makes every seat feel like the best seat in the house hosting a view of the city and a unique alcove seating that feels intimate and private. The decor is rich and modern while still feeling comfortable and welcoming. I could go on for days about the food, but I should let the pictures speak for themselves. Seeing pictures of this place before it opened I thought there is no way it could be this beautiful and had amazing unique dishes. Thankfully I was proven wrong with every bite at MDRD. I can't wait to go back and try the octopus, which they were sold out of by the time of our reservation, but no dish disappointed. Everything was stellar. The desserts were such show stoppers. They were aesthetically the most beautiful dishes i had ever seen. Whimsical and elegant, they made so excited that they were finally coming to my table! First time here. Stunning view of the city. If anything, go for the view. Food was "ok". If you are starving, I recommend not going here because the main courses are very very small. I was here with a large group and most of the group got steak and the waitresses were adamant that there would be no adjustments to the medium rare. When paying over $100 for a meal I expect some accommodations to be made. That was disappointing. The atmosphere is unmatched in part because of it's design, but more so because where else in the city can you dine/drink with a 27th floor view of the city? Velvet, brass and Spanish flare are everywhere and it's gorgeous. The menu is tapas based with some entrees. We wanted to try a bit of everything so we ordered off the tapas menu and we were not disappointed. My favorite was by far the salmon atop the pastries filled with a creme sauce - they were warm which was a delightful surprise! We also LOVED the octopus which was charred and super tasty. The cocktails were also fantastic - the gin and tonic is a crowd pleaser and is giant! And we appreciated the wine selection as well - lots of Spanish options of course. Celebrated my birthday and enjoyed some of my favorites and a few new menu items. The pepino salad, patatas and chicken are always my favorite. We tried the salmon puffs and it was delicious with beautiful presentation. We also tried the omelette but didn't care for it too much. The presentation left a lot to be desired. Hands down the best food and drinks in downtown GR. The atmosphere is elegant and the waiters are extremely knowledgeable. Tip, try to get a reservation during sunset, it's worth it. But on the pricey side, with entrees between 40-80$, or more. read more
